Donald Trump’s election interference and classified documents cases dismissed
The decision by special counsel Jack Smith, who had fiercely sought to hold Mr Trump criminally accountable for his efforts to subvert the 2020 election, represented the end of the federal effort against the former president following his election victory this month despite the election-related cases and multiple other unrelated criminal charges against him. The Justice Department believes Trump can no longer be tried in accordance with longstanding policy that says sitting presidents cannot be prosecuted. Mr Trump has cast both cases as politically motivated and has vowed to fire Mr Smith as soon as he takes office in January. The 2020 election case brought last year was once seen as one of the most serious legal threats facing the Republican as he vied to reclaim the White House. However, it quickly stalled amid legal fighting over Mr Trump’s sweeping claims of immunity from prosecution for acts he took while in the White House. The US Supreme Court in July ruled for the first time that former presidents have broad immunity from prosecution, and sent the case back to US District Judge Tanya Chutkan to determine which allegations in the indictment, if any, could proceed to trial. The official stressed no decision has been made. The person spoke on condition of anonymity as they were not authorized to speak publicly. When Trump imposed higher tariffs during his first term in office, other countries responded with retaliatory tariffs of their own. Canada, for instance, announced billions of new duties in 2018 against the U.S. in a tit-for-tat response to new taxes on Canadian steel and aluminum. Many of the U.S. products were chosen for their political rather than economic impact. For example, Canada imports $3 million worth of yogurt from the U.S. annually and most comes from one plant in Wisconsin, home state of then-House Speaker Paul Ryan. That product was hit with a 10% duty. Another product on the list was whiskey, which comes from Tennessee and Kentucky, the latter of which is the home state of then-Republican Senate leader Mitch McConnell. Trump made the threat Monday while railing against an influx of illegal migrants, even though the numbers at Canadian border pale in comparison to the southern border. The U.S. Border Patrol made 56,530 arrests at the Mexican border in October alone — and 23,721 arrests at the Canadian one between October 2023 and September 2024. Canadian officials say lumping Canada in with Mexico is unfair but say they are happy to work with the Trump administration to lower the numbers from Canada. The Canadians are also worried about a influx north of migrants if Trump follows through with his plan for mass deportations. Trump also railed about fentanyl from Mexico and Canada, even though seizures from the Canadian border pale in comparison to the Mexican border. The original Gladiator , which won five Oscars following its release in 2000, saw the sacked Roman general Maximus ( Russell Crowe ) seeking vengeance on the new emperor Commodus ( Joaquin Phoenix ) for murdering his wife and son. Now, over two decades later (in the film and real life), the story picks back up with Maximus' son Lucius Verus ( Paul Mescal ) following a similar journey. At the end of Gladiator , Lucius is sent away from Rome by his mother Lucilla ( Connie Nielsen ), fearing that he will be murdered by power-hungry politicians. Requels, however, work best when either a) the original wasn't that great to begin with ( Top Gun: Maverick , Mad Max: Fury Road ), or b) the new film makes some big changes ( Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle , Creed ). It's much more difficult to create a new classic when you're working from a beloved piece of IP—the Terminator , Jurassic Park and Indiana Jones reboots all being obvious examples. The path set before Gladiator II , therefore, was fraught from the start. The original Gladiator is an astonishing feat of not only directing and acting but also craftsmanship. Not only does it hold up marvelously, but it was filmed in that glorious window in the late '90s where action scenes were still almost completely created using practical effects and CGI was just brought in to touch things up. Outdoing the original would be a Herculean task. That's probably why the project has been in development since 2001, with director Ridley Scott relaying updates every few years. At one point Crowe was set to return and battle his way back from purgatory; at another Chris Hemsworth was set to lead. The final form of the sequel, however, is mostly the original with Crowe's role split between Mescal and Pascal and Phoenix's given to Quinn and Hechinger. Gladiator II is basically the Shein dupe of Gladiator , where everything is just a little shittier than the original. From the opening naval battle, shoddy Marvel-esque CGI drags down the artistic quality of the film, while none of the leads are quite as starkly drawn (via the script or acting) as their original counterparts. The only moments that veer off from the original are the outlandish action sequences, like the aforementioned shark battle, a Coliseum face-off with a rhinoceros, and a scuffle with the most wackadoo set of CGI monkey/humanoid creatures I've ever seen. While I'm not going to be a stickler for historical accuracy (several historians quit working on the original Gladiator , and I can't imagine they returned for this one), I wish the movie had either stuck with the (sort of) serious tone of the original or gone full camp. Gladiator II instead seems conflicted as to whether it's aiming to be The Fast and the Furious or Saving Private Ryan . Macrinus is the bisexual menace that Carrie Bradshaw warned us about, strutting around Rome flaunting cleavage, munching on grapes and swindling senators out of their estates. Washington, channeling Lady Gaga in House of Gucci , seems to be the only cast member informed by Scott of the movie's tone. A scene involving Washington and a severed head is easily the film's best, and he seems poised for another Oscar run. On the Saving Private Ryan side of things, Scott is returning to this "Rome as a metaphor for the American dream" idea that creeps up briefly in the original. However, due to Gladiator II 's end game, this idea that Rome was a beautiful democracy that has been tarnished by greed appears in a more earnest way. Historically this grafting seems dubious, but based on the fact we just saw a man name a monkey as Roman consul, the abrupt turn into modern American politics just seems a little silly. And also given how often straight men think about the Roman Empire , I doubt we need them believing that's the historical golden era we should be aiming to emulate. Overall, Gladiator II is a fun ride and worth watching. Sure the action sequences jump the shark, but perhaps the film should have done even more shark-jumping. I just wouldn't recommend rewatching Gladiator in the leadup. It's sort of like how you shouldn't do a taste test between gluten free cookies and the real deal. Texans trying to get 'locked in' with Jags up nextThe NWT Recreation and Parks Association (NWTRPA) has launched a new podcast that covers a rarely discussed element of life in residential and day schools in the North: recreation. The podcast is called ‘How I Survived,’ and was produced in partnership with the University of Alberta. The first season will feature seven episodes. The first three have already been released on Spotify and Apple Podcasts. “I would really encourage people to listen to the whole season if they’re able to because it’s quite easy to listen to one episode and make assumptions,” said Crystal Gail Fraser, who serves as co-lead on the project with her longtime friend and collaborator Jess Dunkin. “The season as a whole really complements every interview, and I say that because there is not just one experience of residential school. You will get to hear about the diversity. You’ll get to hear about the ups and downs of how Indigenous folks experienced these years of their childhood.” Fraser, a Gwichya Gwich’in historian whose PhD research focused on student experiences at residential schools in the Inuvik region between 1959 and 1996, has known her fellow historian Dunkin since they were masters students. Their new podcast started as a research project with the same name. The purpose of the project was to share recreation-related stories of residential and day school survivors, and the podcast is carrying on that tradition in audio form. “We had actually brainstormed a little museum about the history of sports and recreation at residential schools,” said Fraser, who also hosts several episodes of the first season. “That didn’t really pan out like we had maybe hoped.” The hope was that the podcast would allow “the stories of survivors to be shared as they told them,” she added. “Sometimes when the content is in other formats, you are just taking quotes from the interviews. We thought [the podcast] would be a great way to keep the integrity of the interviews, and reach a lot of people and educate Canadians and help them learn more about residential schooling in the North because that is still a very understudied area.” In the interviews Fraser and Dunkin have conducted so far, survivors have discussed many kinds of recreation, including music, sewing, painting and sports such as volleyball, hockey and skiing. The typically European-Canadian activities they engaged in were intended to assimilate, but it sometimes had the opposite effect, according to Dunkin, who doubles as a producer for the show. “In some cases, children understood these activities differently than staff, [for example] skiing was a way to connect to the land,” she said. “Also, during recess or free time, children engaged in activities that were familiar from home, like sledding or moose-skin ball.” With just three of seven episodes available so far, the new podcast is still in its “early days,” according to Dunkin. However, she is pleased with the traction it’s been getting so far. “I’ve been surprised how many downloads we’ve had so far,” she said. “The Northwest Territories is a small place, but we just surpassed the 200 download mark overnight [on Nov. 14],” she said. “That tells me there is at least a topical resonance, that people are interested in the podcast and are listening to it. We’re also seeing those numbers climb kind of progressively when we add another episode. That means people are listening to subsequent episodes. It’s not like they just did the intro one then they’re done.” Dunkin said she’s received positive feedback about the podcast, both in-person and online. “I have conversations, bumping into people on the street [in Yellowknife] and they’re like, ‘Wow, I’ve listened to it and it’s really powerful.’” she said. “They have talked about how it’s vital, how it’s critical. “The other thing I’ve heard from people — mostly through social media — is just how nice it is to hear from people that they know, but that they didn’t necessarily know their story. Again, that’s being from a small place — we’re kind of connected. Listeners are meeting people they already know, but in a different way. “So far, it’s been positive what we’ve heard from listeners.” The first season of How I Survived is still far from over, so it’s difficult for Fraser or Dunkin to say for sure if there will be a second season. However, it sounds like it’s possible. “We have already had a couple of people reach out to talk about interviews for a possible season two,” said Fraser. “It has been good. The NWTRPA has been extremely supportive, and the University of Alberta has as well.”

A French influencer fresh off a smash hit film documenting his ascent to Everest’s peak is turning his sights to a new challenge: manga. Ines Benazzouz, known everywhere as Inoxtag, published his first graphic novel “Instinct” on Thursday, a story about a young man with the power to perceive the aura and intentions of those around him. The 22-year-old content creator started posting video game footage in his mid-teens, and his livewire energy has catapulted him to superstardom among young French people, with some 20 million subscribers. But it was the release in mid-September of the film capturing his preparations to climb Mount Everest - despite no prior experience - that brought his fame to new heights, with the documentary garnering more than 38 million views on YouTube. Now, in collaboration with “Kaizen” director Basile Monnot and cartoonist Charles Compain, Benazzouz said he “dreams” of one day seeing his manga adapted into an animated series. ‘Influence’ Benazzouz, a longtime manga fan, decided to take the plunge in February 2023 when he met Compain, a business engineer who dreamed of becoming a manga comic artist. “A lot of people ask me to work with them,” said Inoxtag. “But when I met Charles, something just clicked.” The YouTuber hopes to follow in the footsteps of “Radiant,” a French manga that has sold over a million copies and is the only one to be adapted into an animated series in Japan.
