The two situations are not equivalent, of course. Still, they both tear at the heart of America’s scruples. More than 1,100 Trump supporters got convicted of participating in the siege that sent a joint session of Congress into hiding, injured scores of police officers and left the Capitol in a shambles. Several defendants received probation for misdemeanor charges of entering the Capitol with the mob. But more than 600 were imprisoned from one month to up to 22 years on felony charges of destroying property, assault and battery or encouraging the attack. Trump described them as “political prisoners” and “patriots,” promising to pardon them if elected president again. He said recently he will decide their pardons on a case-by-case basis. A song titled “Justice for All” described their fate. Created and posted often on social media by a group of Jan. 6 defendants (“J6 Choir”) locked in a Washington, D.C. jail block, the song’s popularity drew sympathizers across the country. It briefly made music’s top hits list. Democrats and legal experts denounce Trump’s plan to pardon Jan. 6 defendants as victims of misguided justice. The objection is somewhat hypocritical in the aftermath of Biden pardoning son Hunter. He was convicted of lying on a gun license application and income tax evasion. What devastates the rule of law is Biden’s broken pledge to let his son face the consequences of his felony crimes, including possible prison time. His stunning turnaround occurred, he said, because his son was a victim of a Justice Department political prosecution. That’s the exact reason Trump advances for his intent to pardon some, if not all, the Jan. 6 defendants. He also claims that’s why he was prosecuted and convicted of 34 felonies in his hush money trial as well as charges pending in his other legal cases. Oddly, it seems Biden and Trump agree the Justice Department has been weaponized for political means. Trump says when he returns to office he will rid the department, including its FBI office, of what he calls partisan hacks bent on destroying the country. They will, of course, be replaced by diehard loyalists committed to his America First agenda. Democrats can hardly object. Their president of the last four years has damned the Justice Department and demoralized its employees for his own sake. And just two months before departing the White House. Listen to his attempt to rationalize the decision to pardon his son when he said repeatedly he would not. “For my entire career I have followed a simple principle: just tell the American people the truth. They will be fair-minded,” Biden said in a statement. “Here’s the truth: I believe in the justice system, but as I have wrestled with this, I also believe raw politics has infected the process and it led to a miscarriage of justice (of his son).” Biden asked Americans to understand “why a father and a president would come to this decision.” Many will not. Sure, other presidents, including Trump in his first term, granted pardons to family and friends for alleged criminal behavior. In most of these cases, the persons pardoned felt the outcome of their sentences, including prison time. Biden’s rollback of his no pardon pledge — just two weeks before his son’s sentencing — disregarded the legal standard that no person is above the law; that everyone is treated equally no matter their station in life. Sadly, Biden’s decision of defiance comes at a time when the justice system’s moral fiber is fraying.

Marshon Lattimore 's injury Since being traded to the Washington Commanders , Lattimore has not played a single down for the NFC East foe. Washington has continued to see some success, but their defense would undoubtedly improve with him on the field. The Commanders just ruled out Lattimore for Week 12 as well. Dan Quinn says Marshon Lattimore won't play Sunday. Quinn says he's optimistic Lattimore could play against the #Titans in a week. He says the bye in 2 weeks won't determine when Lattimore plays. It caused him to miss time in New Orleans, and now, it is affecting his availability for Dan Quinn's defense. The Saints got some backlash at the deadline for not garnering a second round pick for the top-flight CB. In reality, garnering a third round pick and day three draft stock was a win for the Saints in the long run. Lattimore had a great career in New Orleans, but injuries have mounted for him in recent seasons, including 2024. Without him, their secondary has still played fairly well since he was dealt away. Lattimore played in just seventeen games combined between the 2022-2023 and 2023-2024 season. Before 2022, the CB was had played in at least thirteen games in every season of his NFL career. For the Saints, we will see how they choose to address the CB position during this offseason. They have a lot of faith in young CB Alontae Taylor, but his time playing outside has not been consistent. He was playing in the slot until Lattimore was traded away. Rookie Kool-Aid McKinstry also has plenty of fans in the organization. Drafting a cornerback early in the 2025 NFL Draft could make sense, too, though. Regardless, the value that the Saints got in return for Lattimore looks pretty impressive, considering his lack of availability that continues to grow in Washington. There’s no scenario where Scottie Barnes doesn’t start and Jakob Poeltl is probably a lock too if he isn’t traded since even the best centre prospect isn’t ready to step right into the NBA next season. Immanuel Quickley has the second-biggest contract in Raptors history and is a talented player and I still think he starts even if Toronto lands one of the top guard prospects. That leaves RJ Barrett and Dick. Barrett’s been solid as a Raptor, especially at home, where he’s played at an all-star level, and Dick has taken major steps forward as sophomore, but the draft is loaded with high-upside wings. If a great shooter is picked maybe it will make sense for Dick to come off the bench. But if it’s Cooper Flagg, who excels right now in other areas, maybe they’ll need Dick’s shooting and Barrett would become one of the NBA’s best sixth men? Again, it’s early. Players are getting better under the watch of Rajakovic and his staff, which was the main reason why he was hired in the first place. I think he’s had some struggles late in games with lineups, timeouts and things like that and the defence has been way too porous and foul-prone (but still better than last year), but overall has done a good job. He certainly knows the game, has great rapport with his players and works hard. Plus, I assume you’re referring to Davion Mitchell and maybe Ochai Agbaji here and NBA.com’s stats show Mitchell has done a superb job on many stars. He held De’Aaron Fox to 3-for-9 shooting when they were matched up, Anthony Edwards to 3-for-7, Jaylen Brown to 1-for-5, LaMelo Ball to 1-for-7, for example. He forced Cade Cunningham and DeMar DeRozan to each have three turnovers in eight, and three minutes matched against Mitchell, for example. He’s a really good defender. It’s the other end that’s holding him back. Agbaji didn’t do a good enough job forcing Jaden Ivey into a tougher shot on Monday at the buzzer and has tailed off a bit for sure. But, he’s often had the toughest matchup and done OK against ultra elite player like LeBron James, Jayson Tatum and Giannis Antetokounmpo. Team defence is just that – team. One or two guys can’t do it on their own. But Battle is one heck of a shooter. I’d imagine he knocks down a ton in practice and he hit 9-of-15 three-pointers in Summer League, 8-of-14 in the pre-season and 43% in his final season in the NCAA (he also shot 88-for-95, 92.6% from the line that year). Right now he’s one of the best options. Dick and Quickley would probably be my picks over Battle, but he’s a good choice too. But you’re right. There can’t be many examples of undrafted rookies getting the job before. Fred VanVleet would be a good guess as the last Raptor in that situation to do it. Or a top player suffers a bad injury that will impact them long-term. Best case to me is things continue like this (OK, with a few more wins so they get off this 13 win or so pace to more like 25 victories or so) tough losses but they keep playing hard and improving as players. Get an asset or two for Bruce Brown/Chris Boucher and hope for lottery luck. Others might see best case as similar to the year they traded Rudy Gay and inexplicably won 48 games and the division out of nowhere. And why would you want to even bring it back up again?” said former Enron employee Diana Peters, who represented workers in the company’s bankruptcy proceedings. Here’s what to know about the history of Enron and the purported effort to bring it back. What happened at Enron? Once the nation’s seventh-largest company, Enron filed for bankruptcy protection on Dec. 2, 2001, after years of accounting tricks could no longer hide billions of dollars in debt or make failing ventures appear profitable. The energy company’s collapse put more than 5,000 people out of work, wiped out more than $2 billion in employee pensions and rendered $60 billion in Enron stock worthless. Its aftershocks were felt throughout the energy sector. Twenty-four Enron executives , including former CEO Jeffrey Skilling , were eventually convicted for their roles in the fraud. In an email, company spokesperson Will Chabot said the new Enron was not doing any interviews yet, but that “We’ll have more to share soon.” Signs point to the comeback being a joke. In the “terms of use and conditions of sale” on the company’s website, it says “the information on the website about Enron is First Amendment protected parody, represents performance art, and is for entertainment purposes only.” Documents filed with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office show that College Company, an Arkansas-based LLC, owns the Enron trademark. The co-founder of College Company is Connor Gaydos, who helped create a joke conspiracy theory that claims all birds are actually surveillance drones for the government. What do former Enron employees think of the company’s return? Peters said that since learning about the “relaunch” of Enron, she has spoken with several other former employees and they are also upset by it. She said the apparent stunt was “in poor taste.” “If it’s a joke, it’s rude, extremely rude. And I hope that they realize it and apologize to all of the Enron employees,” Peters said. Peters, who is 74 years old, said she is still working in information technology because “I lost everything in Enron, and so my Social Security doesn’t always take care of things I need done.” “Enron’s downfall taught us critical lessons about corporate ethics, accountability, and the consequences of unchecked ambition.
