BLUE BELL — Montgomery County Community College recently celebrated its milestone 60th anniversary year with two special events at the Blue Bell Campus on Dec. 5, just days before the anniversary of its founding date of Dec. 8, 1964. Kicking off the day’s festivities was a ribbon-cutting ceremony for MCCC’s new 20,180-square-foot Hospitality Institute. “This new facility is much more than an attractive space; it is a catalyst for learning, connection and opportunity,” said Dr. Victoria L. Bastecki-Perez, MCCC president. “Together, we are continuing Montco’s strong legacy of shaping lives and communities for generations to come.” Dr. Bastecki-Perez was joined by Montgomery County Commissioners Thomas DiBello and Neil Makhija who spoke and presented a special citation. Members of the campus community, including MCCC trustees, employees and students, came together to celebrate the official opening of the building, which had previously served as the campus bookstore before renovations began in 2022. MCCC’s hospitality offerings include associate degree and certificate programs in culinary arts, baking and pastry arts and tourism and hospitality management, with plans to add new programs in the future. For the 60th-anniversary celebration, guests reminisced as they viewed the retrospective exhibit filled with 60 years of MCCC history, including Brian Brendlinger, son of LeRoy Brendlinger, MCCC’s first president. The program, led by Karima Roepel, director of the Hospitality Institute, and AmeriCorps VISTA Fellow Jennifer Fanega, repurposed 7,500 pounds of excess food from culinary classes into more than 3,200 meals for the college’s food pantry, addressing food insecurity while reducing landfill waste. The program received the 2023-2024 Innovation of the Year Award from The League for Innovation in the Community College. Additionally, the Hospitality Institute includes an educational restaurant and a pastry shop, which provide hands-on learning opportunities for students to master both the front- and back-of-the-house operations. The restaurant has both indoor and outdoor dining spaces. “The Hospitality Institute will be a game-changer, not only for our students but also for Montgomery County’s workforce and economy,” said Dr. Raj Guttha, MCCC trustee, noting that the hospitality industry is one of the most vibrant and essential industries in the region. MCCC Vice President of Academic Affairs and Provost Dr. Chae Sweet said the Hospitality Institute already has become a gathering space for students and employees during the soft opening this fall. “The Hospitality Institute will be a beacon for the broader community, too, offering culinary classes for cooking enthusiasts, youth camps, team-building events and dining experiences,” Dr. Sweet said. After the ribbon cutting, MCCC continued its celebration later in the evening when invited students, current and former employees, alumni, and community members gathered for a special 60th-anniversary event beginning in Parkhouse Hall. Named after A. Russell Parkhouse, a Montgomery County commissioner who was a key advocate for the college’s founding, the building served as the perfect venue for the event. Bastecki-Perez welcomed guests and spoke about how MCCC continues to fulfill the founders’ vision to create opportunities for all learners. “Montgomery County Community College is committed to breaking down barriers and opening doors, ensuring that everyone has a pathway to opportunity,” she said. “Our Mustangs, through their many successes, leave indelible hoofprints, elevating families and their communities for generations and creating lasting success. United in purpose, we will continue to transform lives, destinies and future generations.” Following the formal remarks, attendees were invited to explore the campus. Select buildings featured anniversary-themed exhibits, including a retrospective exhibit filled with 60 years of MCCC history in College Hall and a special 60th-anniversary student video project played inside the Montco Cultural Center theater. The two events concluded a year-long series of activities commemorating the college’s 60th anniversary. Highlights included the Acts of Service Challenge, where students and employees were encouraged to perform 60 minutes of service a month in their communities, special 60th- anniversary episodes of the “Montco on the Move” podcast, and a ‘Human 60’ formation to kick off the fall semester. (Source: Nasdaq) The S&P 500 and the Nasdaq were slightly lower on Monday after notching record closing highs in the previous session, as losses in chip stocks including Nvidia weighed, while investors awaited a key inflation report this week. The consumer prices index (CPI) data due on Wednesday is among the last major datasets ahead of the Federal Reserve’s Dec. 17-18 meeting and could influence the central bank’s monetary policy path. “The thing to watch will be any hint or evidence that core CPI might moderate into 2025 because the Fed will have a hard time continuing to cut at the pace they’re on now,” said Ross Mayfield, investment strategist at Baird. Bets of a 25-basis-point rate cut at the upcoming meeting shot up to more than 89% after data on Friday showed a rise in the unemployment rate to 4.2% in November, pointing to an easing labor market. A host of Fed officials including Chair Jerome Powell last week said that the central bank could afford to be more cautious with its monetary policy easing path, given the resilience of the economy. At 9:39 a.m. ET, the Dow Jones Industrial Average (.DJI), rose 58.66 points, or 0.13%, to 44,701.18, the S&P 500 (.SPX), lost 6.85 points, or 0.11%, to 6,083.42 and the Nasdaq Composite (.IXIC), lost 32.29 points, or 0.16%, to 19,827.48. Nvidia (NVDA.O), opens new tab was last down 2.4% after China’s market regulator said it had opened an investigation into the company over suspected violation of the country’s antimonopoly law, knocking a gauge of semiconductor stocks (.SOX), opens new tab down 0.3%. Another big decliner amongst chips was Advanced Micro Devices (AMD.O), which fell 3.3% as BofA Global Research downgraded its rating on the stock to “neutral” from “buy”. Seven of the 11 major S&P sectors were trading lower, with utilities (.SPLRCU), at the helm of losses with a 0.6% fall. Wall Street’s main indexes kicked off December on a broadly positive note, with the benchmark S&P 500 (.SPX), and the tech-heavy Nasdaq (.IXIC), logging gains in their first week, while the blue-chip Dow (.DJI), ended the week marginally lower. U.S. equities surged in November as Donald Trump’s victory in the presidential election and his party sweeping both houses of Congress raised expectations of a friendlier policy stance towards companies. Among notable movers on Monday, Workday (WDAY.O), opens new tab and Apollo Global Management (APO.N), added 8.1% and 3.5%, respectively, on their planned inclusion into the S&P 500 index. Interpublic Group (IPG.N), opens new tab advanced 9.5% after a report said marketing conglomerate Omnicom (OMC.N), was in advanced talks to acquire the advertising company. Omnicom shares were down 6%. U.S.-listed shares of Chinese companies gained after the Chinese Politburo hinted at a shift to looser monetary policy next year and more proactive fiscal policy to spur economic growth. Alibaba was up 8%, PDD Holdings (PDD.O), climbed 11.3% and Baidu added 7.1%. Advancing issues outnumbered decliners by a 2.16-to-1 ratio on the NYSE and by a 1.9-to-1 ratio on the Nasdaq. The S&P 500 posted 14 new 52-week highs and one new low, while the Nasdaq Composite recorded 64 new highs and 15 new lows. My husband and I have no children. Our niece’s families are dear to us. Our 11-year-old great-nephew has been gaming now for about a year. When he comes to visit, instead of reading or playing cards or board games with us, he wants to disappear with his video games. We feel vacated. How do we navigate this with his parents who think his being on a video gaming team at school is awesome and I think it is a bad omen? What is a fair place of compromise and balance? — Game Off Dear Game Off: Let his parents parent their child. The other night I re-watched the movie “Network” from 1977. In it, a character in his 60s dismisses a character played by Faye Dunaway by saying, “She’s the television generation. She learned life from Bugs Bunny. The only reality she knows is what comes to her over her TV set.” Every generation has anxieties about the ways that technology is changing social interactions or altering the minds of the generations below. While some of those concerns are valid, those of Faye Dunaway’s generation (now in their 70s and 80s) would argue that they’ve managed to stay quite well-rounded, despite TV. In moderation, video games have been shown to improve a child’s cognitive function and working memory. While your great-nephew’s gaming might not be your choice, it’s important that you not seek to undermine the research and thinking that his parents have done about it. What you’re really yearning for is a sense of togetherness as a family, so try talking to your niece and her spouse about group activities you can plan to meet your great-nephew where he is. Dear Eric: I eat at a local restaurant a couple times a week and tend to get one of three meals. This one waitress asks me what I want to eat, but then interrupts me to make guesses or tell me my choice. I just put my head down and nod yes or no to the guesses. It’s frustrating, but not life-threatening. She enjoys it. I hate it. However, if I were to say something, it would force her to make the choice of being herself, doing something she likes doing, or appeasing me so I can order the way I want to order. I don’t know if this is a big enough problem to have a “high road.” The answer will not change my life. She can easily change, and I can easily suffer. The question is who gets to be themselves? — Speaking Up Dear Speaking Up: I worked in the service industry for more than a decade. I loved it. I loved seeing regulars, meeting new people and carrying a lot of beverages in my hands at one time. The whole bit. I also loved knowing what people wanted, but I would always ask and confirm. That’s part of the job. She may think you’re a regular who likes to be known in this way. So, informing her that that’s not the case won’t be keeping her from being herself. It will be helping her to do her job better. You may not have the kind of temperament that easily or comfortably course-corrects in social situations. That’s just fine. But know you won’t be causing her suffering by saying something like, “I’ve already decided on my meal. Let’s skip the guessing today and I’ll just tell you.” This also clears the path for the two of you to talk about something else, if you want. Send questions to R. The Jaguars (2-10) claimed Reynolds off waivers from the Broncos on Wednesday, adding the journeyman to help offset season-ending injuries to Christian Kirk and Gabe Davis. The 29-year-old Reynolds missed the last eight games, with the bulk of those coming after the shooting. “Yeah, man, one of them things I had rather put behind me,” Reynolds said following practice Friday, his first public comments since the incident. “But I mean anybody going through that, man, it is a crazy ordeal. But, hey, I’m here now. I’m in sunny Florida. I’m just blessed to be here.” Reynolds and another man were shot as they drove from a strip club in the early morning hours of Oct. 18, about the time the Broncos were returning from a 33-10 win at New Orleans. Denver police arrested two men in connection with the shooting, which involved at least 30 rounds getting fired into the vehicle carrying Reynolds and his companions. The men have been charged with six counts of attempted murder, assault and other felonies. Reynolds was shot once in his left arm and once in the back of his head. “Was tough for a few weeks, but I had a good support system behind me,” Reynolds said. “A lot of the organization over there was helping me out a lot, so they made it easier for me to kind of transition through that whole process.” His mom was there, too, taking off work to be with him on weekends. “She’s always been a big part of my life,” Reynolds said. “Always been in my corner whenever she can. It’s been awesome to have her traveling and just seeing her at my games, man. It’s awesome.” Reynolds has 12 receptions for 183 yards and a touchdown this season. He has 232 catches for 3,116 yards and 20 scores in eight NFL seasons with the Los Angeles Rams, Detroit, Tennessee and Denver. He signed a two-year, $9 million contract with the Broncos in 2024. “You put on the tape, he’s obviously been in a couple of spots, and he’s been a guy that’s a bigger, taller, athletic receiver,” Jaguars coach Doug Pederson said. “Again, gives us depth where we’re obviously missing Christian and Gabe. Definitely gives us something that we can continue to develop that room, I think. “It helps us in the way that we’re trying to win these games. We’re trying to go out and play well, and he gives us an opportunity to do that. So, we’re excited to get him going a little bit and see how he can help.” The Jaguars play Sunday at Tennessee (3-9).

New York takes on St. Louis after Panarin's 2-goal showingCNN anchor Kaitlan Collins called President Joe Biden’s pardon of his son Hunter Biden a “political timebomb” that left Dems in “the blast radius” — and pointed out his hypocrisy after years of claiming he would respect the Justice Department’s rulings. The Democratic president late Sunday pardoned Hunter, who was convicted of federal gun and tax evasion charges earlier this year, after repeatedly denying he would use his pardoning powers for his 54-year-old son. “With 50 days left in his presidency, Joe Biden just set off a political timebomb before leaving for Africa today, and leaving his party behind to deal with the blast radius,” Collins said Monday night during “The Source with Kaitlan Collins.” Collins pointed out how Biden went back on his word, since he repeatedly said he would not pardon Hunter to prove that no one is above the law – an attempt to contrast himself with Trump. In a statement released Sunday , Biden said his son’s prosecution was unfair and politically motivated. “The charges in his cases came about only after several of my political opponents in Congress instigated them to attack me and oppose my election,” Biden said in the statement. “Raw politics has infected this process and it led to a miscarriage of justice.” The statement “at times sounded like something Trump himself could have posted on Truth Social,” Collins said In a clip played during Collins’ show, Biden said he was committed to reinstating the Justice Department’s reputation and integrity after it had been “corrupted” under Trump. “I did not, have not and will not pick up the phone and call the attorney general and tell him what he should or should not do in terms of who he should prosecute,” Biden said in 2021 during a town hall. His promise was met with resounding applause. In another clip, this time from a June interview with ABC’s David Muir, Biden vowed to abide by the jury’s decision and said he had ruled out a pardon. Most recently, a few days after Trump’s victory over Vice President Kamala Harris in November, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre responded to reporters’ questions about a possible pardon: “We’ve been asked that question multiple times. Our answer stands, which is no.” In June, Hunter was convicted in Delaware federal court of three felonies for purchasing a gun in 2018 after prosecutors say he lied on a federal form by claiming he was not using or addicted to drugs. Hunter had been set to take the stand in a California trial in September over claims he failed to pay at least $1.4 million in taxes, but he pleaded guilty to misdemeanor and felony charges in a surprise last-minute move as jury selection was set to begin. “Rarely, if ever, have we heard from both Biden and Trump on the same page about anything,” Collins said. “But now, it’s in print – their mutual anger at the Justice Department,” Collins said.

TORONTO — In pregame introductions, OG Anunoby was greeted with a polite round of applause as he returned to Toronto. And when RJ Barrett was introduced with all of the pomp and circumstance of a home team intro, he jumped and danced along the sideline. That mood carried over for much of the game as Barrett seemed intent on making a statement against the team that traded him away. But in the end, it was the Knicks who were jumping and celebrating after pulling out a 113-108 win at Scotiabank Arena. Barrett did his part, finishing with 30 points, eight rebounds and four assists, but the Knicks got a balanced attack topped by Karl-Anthony Towns (24 points, 15 rebounds, six assists) to survive. Jalen Brunson's four-point play with 3:03 left began a game-ending 12-4 run that gave the Knicks (15-9) the win. Mikal Bridges had 23 points and Brunson added 20 points and 11 assists. When the Knicks, clinging to a two-point lead, missed a layup, Barrett muscled the ball away from Towns, raced up the floor and hit a lefthanded layup between two defenders, tying the score at 108 with 42.1 seconds to play. But out of a timeout, Brunson was double-teamed and found Towns under the basket for a go-ahead layup with 36 seconds remaining. When Barrett got past Anunoby and challenged Towns for a layup, Anunoby blocked the shot from behind. Towns delivered a three-point field goal on a feed from Anunoby with 6.3 seconds to play, and this time the Knicks celebrated as wildly as Barrett did at the start of the game. With just over a minute left in the third quarter, Brunson backed up toward the sideline after draining a three-point field goal and appeared to step on a fan’s foot. He left the game when the Knicks called time and headed to the locker room. He returned to the bench early in the fourth quarter and re-entered the game with 6:35 left and the Knicks trailing 97-95. Josh Hart gave the Knicks the lead with a corner three-pointer after a steal. The Raptors briefly took the lead back before Towns drained a three on a feed from Brunson for a 101-99 advantage. With the score tied at 101 after Barrett's drive, Barrett drove and found Davion Mitchell in the corner for a three-pointer with 3:30 remaining. Brunson answered with a three of his own, drawing a foul on Mitchell on the play and converting the four-point play to give the Knicks a 105-104 lead with 3:03 left. Mitchell gave Toronto the lead, but Towns found Bridges in the corner for a go-ahead three-pointer. This meant something for Barrett. As he prepared to take the court for the Raptors against his former team on Monday night, he sat at his locker and paused for a moment as he considered a question. He thought back through his years in New York and realized that not a single player on the Knicks had been with the team when he arrived in the 2019 NBA Draft. Back then, he was supposed to be the next big thing in New York, the No. 3 overall pick and a turning point for a franchise that had been floundering for years. The Knicks built around him, and then nearly a year ago — Dec. 30, 2023 — he got the call that he was gone. And despite the history there, the key role he’d played, he wasn’t surprised at all. “Lots of stuff,” Barrett said, shaking his head. “Lots of stuff. I think I just got a vibe, kind of figured. I wasn’t really too surprised when it happened.” He was the first of the group that had carried the team to respectability to go, dealt along with Immanuel Quickley to his hometown team in exchange for OG Anunoby, Precious Achiuwa and Malachi Flynn. Julius Randle and Donte DiVincenzo eventually followed him out the door in a preseason deal for Towns — and that didn’t surprise him either. “Nah, I think there’s certain things that you see that are out of the usual,” Barrett said. “But I think whenever you get traded, it is a surprise. I didn’t know when it would happen, that fast, that early, but it happened. I’m here and I’m thankful to be here.'' Notes & quotes: With 6:47 to play in the third quarter, Towns and Scottie Barnes collided on a foul by Barnes. Towns was slow to get up, flexing his right knee. Barnes had to be helped off by teammates, limping to the locker room on one leg. He did not return, diagnosed with a sprained right ankle. Steve Popper covers the Knicks for Newsday. Jim Montgomery was hired as coach of the NHL's St. Louis Blues on Sunday, five days after being fired as coach of the Boston Bruins. The 55-year-old Canadian, who guided Boston to an NHL record for wins and points in a season but never got past the second round of the playoffs, replaced Drew Bannister, who was fired after a 9-12-1 start by the Blues this season. An 8-9-3 start this season by the Bruins led to Montgomery's firing, but he signed a five-year contract with the Blues. "This was more an opportunity to get someone of Jim's caliber more than anything else," Blues president of hockey operations Doug Armstrong said. "We've had to deal with our situations off the ice with injuries and everyone deals with that, but this decision was based 100% on having someone of Jim's caliber becoming available when I didn't know that was going to happen." Montgomery is 180-84-33 as an NHL coach, having guided Dallas for two seasons and Boston for just over two campaigns, going 120-41-23 with the Bruins. In the 2022-23 season, the Bruins won an NHL record 65 games and compiled a record 135 points under Montgomery, who was named the NHL's Coach of the Year, but were upset by Florida in the first round of the playoffs. More from this section Boston also lost to the eventual 2024 Stanley Cup champions in last year's playoffs. Montgomery was dropped by the Bruins last Tuesday and replaced by Joe Sacco. "He certainly has a very positive demeanour, works well with the top players in the organizations that he's been with," Armstrong said. "He has a wealth of experience and he's at the prime of his coaching career." The Blues, who won the 2019 Stanley Cup, have missed the playoffs the past two seasons. Bannister went 39-31-6 as the Blues coach after replacing Craig Berube last December. Montgomery gets his first test with the Blues on Monday when they visit the New York Rangers. js/sevTORONTO, Dec. 09, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Onex Corporation (the “ Company ”) (TSX: ONEX) announced today that, in connection with the Company’s ongoing substantial issuer bid (the “ Offer ”), the Company has obtained an order from the Ontario Securities Commission granting exemptive relief from certain extension, proportionate take-up and related disclosure requirements in connection with the Offer, the details of which can be found in the offer to purchase and issuer bid circular filed by the Company in connection with the Offer (the “ Circular ”), which is available on SEDAR+ at www.sedarplus.ca . There are 47 total bowl games in the 2024-25 season, including four college football playoff first round games, four quarterfinal games, two semifinals, and the national championship on Monday, January 20. Generally, teams must win six or more regular season games to be bowl eligible, although there are exceptions if more teams are needed to fill out the slate of games. The most common exception is five win teams who are ranked in order of their Academic Progress Rates (APRs). APR tracks student-athletes' chances of graduation. The closing of polls started a countdown to the announcement of official results as independent polling firms were preparing to release so-called quick counts. Depending on how tight the vote turns out to be, electoral officials may not call the race for days — as happened in the contentious 2019 runoff that brought center-right President Luis Lacalle Pou to office and ended 15 years of rule by Uruguay’s left-leaning Broad Front. Uruguay's staid election has turned into a hard-fought race between Álvaro Delgado, the incumbent party’s candidate who won 27% in the first round of voting on Oct. 27, and Yamandú Orsi from the Broad Front, who took 44% of the vote in the first round. But other conservative parties that make up the government coalition — in particular, the Colorado Party — notched 20% of the vote collectively, enough to give Delgado an edge over his challenger. Congress ended up evenly split in the October vote. Most polls have shown a virtual tie between Delgado and Orsi, with nearly 10% of Uruguayan voters undecided even at this late stage. Many said they believed turnout would be low if voting weren't compulsory in the country. “Neither candidate convinced me and I feel that there are many in my same situation," said Vanesa Gelezoglo, 31, in the capital, Montevideo, adding she would make up her mind at “the last minute.” Analysts say the candidates' lackluster campaigns and broad consensus on key issues have generated extraordinary indecision and apathy in an election dominated by discussions about social spending and concerns over income inequality but largely free of the anti-establishment rage that has vaulted populist outsiders to power elsewhere . “The question of whether Frente Amplio (the Broad Front) raises taxes is not an existential question, unlike what we saw in the U.S. with Trump and Kamala framing each other as threats to democracy," said Nicolás Saldías, a Latin America and Caribbean senior analyst for the London-based Economist Intelligence Unit. “That doesn't exist in Uruguay.” Both candidates are also appealing to voter angst over a surge in violent crime that has shaken a nation long regarded as one of the region’s safest, with Delgado promising tough-on-crime policies and Orsi advocating a more community-oriented approach. Delgado, 55, a rural veterinarian with a long career in the National Party, campaigned on a vow to continue the legacy of current President Lacalle Pou — in some ways making the election into a referendum on his leadership. He campaigned under the slogan “re-elect a good government." While a string of corruption scandals rattled Lacalle Pou's government last year, the president — who constitutionally cannot run for a second consecutive term — now enjoys high approval ratings and a strong economy expected to grow 3.2% this year, according to the International Monetary Fund. Inflation has also eased in recent months, boosting his coalition. Delgado served most recently as Secretary of the Presidency for Lacalle Pou and promises to pursue his predecessor's pro-business policies. He would continue pushing for a trade deal with China that has raised hackles in Mercosur, an alliance of South American countries promoting regional commerce. "We have to give the government coalition a chance to consolidate its proposals,” said Ramiro Pérez, a street vendor voting for Delgado on Sunday. Orsi, 57, a former history teacher and two-time mayor from a working-class background, is widely seen as the political heir to iconic former President José “Pepe” Mujica , an ex-Marxist guerilla who raised Uruguay's international profile as one of the region's most socially liberal and environmentally sustainable nations during his 2010-2015 term. His Broad Front coalition oversaw the legalization of abortion, same-sex marriage and the sale of marijuana in the small South American nation of 3.4 million people. “He's my candidate, not only for my sake but also for my children's,” Yeny Varone, a nurse, said of Orsi. “In the future they'll have better working conditions, health and salaries.” Mujica, now 89 and recovering from esophageal cancer , was among the first to cast his ballot after polls opened. “Uruguay is a small country, but it has earned recognition for being stable, for having a citizenry that respects institutional formalities,” he told reporters from his local polling station. “This is no small feat.” While promising to forge a “new left” in Uruguay, Orsi plans no dramatic changes. He proposes tax incentives to lure investment and social security reforms that would lower the retirement age but fall short of a radical overhaul sought by Uruguay's unions. The contentious plebiscite on whether to boost pension payouts failed to pass in October, with Uruguayans rejecting generous pensions in favor of fiscal constraint. Both candidates pledged full cooperation with each other if elected. “I want (Orsi) to know that my idea is to form a government of national unity,” Delgado told reporters after casting his vote in the capital's upscale Pocitos neighborhood. He said that if he won, he and Orsi would chat on Monday over some yerba mate, the traditional herbal drink beloved by Uruguayans. Orsi similarly pledged a smooth and respectful transition of power, describing Sunday's democratic exercise as “an incredible experience" as he voted in Canelones, the sprawling town of beaches and cattle ranches just north of Montevideo where he served as mayor for a decade. “The essence of politics is agreements,” he said. “You never end up completely satisfied.” Associated Press writer Isabel DeBre in Villa Tunari, Bolivia, contributed to this report.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Taylor Swift once raved about the sweet potato casserole served at a New York City restaurant and now that recipe pops up every now and again at Thanksgiving. The holidays encourage many of us to try new recipes. Social media right now is flooded with recipes for appetizers, side dishes and desserts. Anyone making that cornbread casserole from TikTok? While we might not get to share a Thanksgiving feast with Swift — is your name Blake Lively? — or other celebrities beloved by Kansas City, we can eat like them. So here’s the recipe for that casserole Swift loved so much, and favorite family side dish recipes from Donna Kelce and Eric Stonestreet. Enjoy. Travis Kelce's mother, Donna Kelce, seen here last year at her son's music festival, dined on a cheesesteak made by actor Bradley Cooper at QVC festivities in Las Vegas this week. (Emily Curiel/Kansas City Star/TNS) If we tried to guess how many holiday dinner rolls Travis Kelce and his brother, Jason Kelce, have scarfed over the years, would it be in the hundreds? Thousands? Their mom has spoken often about the batches of holiday crescent rolls she has baked over the years. Based on the recipe that won the 1969 Pillsbury Bake-Off, Pillsbury’s Magic Marshmallow Crescent Puffs , they’re now known as Mama Kelce’s Dinner Rolls. They blend the crescent roll pastry with marshmallows, cinnamon and sugar. Dinner roll or dessert? We bet they didn’t last long enough in front of Travis and Jason for that debate. Ingredients Rolls •1/4 cup granulated sugar •2 tablespoons Pillsbury Best all-purpose flour •1 teaspoon ground cinnamon •2 (8-ounce) cans refrigerated Pillsbury Original Crescent Rolls (8 Count) •16 large marshmallows •1/4 cup butter or margarine, melted Glaze •1/2 cup powdered sugar •1/2 teaspoon vanilla •2-3 teaspoons milk •1/4 cup chopped nuts Directions Make the rolls 1. Preheat oven to 375°F. Spray 16 medium muffin cups with nonstick baking spray. 2. In a small bowl, mix the granulated sugar, flour and cinnamon. 3. Separate the dough into 16 triangles. For each roll, dip 1 marshmallow into melted butter; roll in the sugar mixture. Place marshmallow on the shortest side of a triangle. Roll up, starting at shortest side and rolling to opposite point. Completely cover the marshmallow with the dough; firmly pinch edges to seal. Dip 1 end in remaining butter; place butter side down in muffin cup. 4. Bake for 12 to 15 minutes or until golden brown. 5. When done, remove from the oven and let the puffs cool in the pan for 1 minute. Remove rolls from muffin cups; place on cooling racks set over waxed paper. Make the glaze and assemble In a small bowl, mix the powdered sugar, vanilla and enough milk for desired drizzling consistency. Drizzle glaze over warm rolls. Sprinkle with nuts. Serve warm. (Emma McIntyre/Getty Images for SiriusXM/TNS) Thanksgiving is one of the “Modern Family” star’s favorite holidays. Three years ago, as part of a campaign honoring hometown heroes , he shared one of his favorite recipe with McCormick Spices: Roasted Brussels Sprouts with Bacon and Butternut Squash . This recipe serves eight. Ingredients •1 pound Brussels sprouts, trimmed and halved •1 pound butternut squash, peeled and cut into bite-size cubes •1 tablespoon olive oil •1/2 teaspoon garlic powder •1/2 teaspoon thyme leaves •1/2 teaspoon salt •1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper •5 slices bacon, chopped •1 shallot, finely chopped •1/2 cup dried cranberries •1/4 cup balsamic vinegar •1 teaspoon whole grain mustard •1/2 cup chopped pecans, toasted (optional) •1/3 cup crumbled blue cheese, (optional) Directions 1. Preheat oven to 475°F. Spray large shallow baking pan with no stick cooking spray; set aside. Place Brussels sprouts and squash in large bowl. Drizzle with olive oil and sprinkle with garlic powder, thyme, salt and pepper; toss to coat evenly. Spread in single layer on prepared pan. 2. Roast 16 to 18 minutes or until tender and lightly browned, stirring halfway through cooking. 3. Meanwhile, cook bacon in medium skillet on medium heat about 6 minutes or until crispy. Remove using slotted spoon and place on paper towels to drain. Add shallot to same skillet; cook and stir 2 minutes until softened and lightly browned. Stir in cranberries, vinegar and mustard until well blended. Transfer mixture to small bowl; set aside. 4. Arrange roasted Brussels sprouts and squash on serving platter. Drizzle with cranberry balsamic glaze and toss gently to coat. Sprinkle with cooked bacon, toasted pecans, and crumbled blue cheese, if desired. Serve immediately. Donna Kelce, left, mother of Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce watched the game with pop superstar Taylor Swift, center, during the first-half on Sunday, Sept. 24, 2023, at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City. (Tammy Ljungblad/Kansas City Star/TNS) Swift gushed about the sweet potato casserole served at Del Frisco’s Grille in New York City, a dish crowned with a crunchy candied pecan and oatmeal crumble. “I’ve never enjoyed anything with the word casserole in it ever before, but it’s basically sweet potatoes with this brown sugary crust,” she told InStyle. ”Oh my God, it’s amazing.” The media rushed to find the recipe, which Parade has published this Thanksgiving season . “Similar to T. Swift herself, we think this recipe is a mastermind, especially if you’ve been asked to bring the sweet potato side dish to this year’s Thanksgiving feast. It seriously begs the question: who needs pumpkin pie?” the magazine writes. Ingredients •4 lbs sweet potatoes •1⁄3 cup oats •12 oz unsalted butter, divided •1⁄2 cup packed brown sugar •1⁄2 cup toasted pecans •1⁄2 cup granulated sugar •1 tsp kosher salt •2 tsp vanilla extract •4 large eggs, beaten Directions Preheat oven to 375°F. 1. Scrub sweet potatoes. Pierce each several times with a fork and wrap tightly in foil. Place on a sheet pan. Bake 90 minutes or until tender. Set aside until cool enough to handle. 2. Meanwhile, place oats in a food processor; process 1 minute. Add 4 oz butter, brown sugar and pecans; pulse five times to combine. Spread mixture on a baking sheet; bake 10 minutes. Remove from oven, crumble. Bake 5 minutes or until golden brown. 3. Melt remaining 8 oz butter. Remove skin from cooled sweet potatoes. In a large bowl, whisk sweet potatoes, melted butter, granulated sugar and remaining ingredients until slightly lumpy. Transfer to a greased baking dish, smoothing surface evenly. Top with oat mixture. Bake 12 minutes or until heated through. Make-ahead tips •Sweet potato filling can be made up to 2 days in advance. Gabriel had worn No. 8 at Oklahoma before transferring for his sixth season of eligibility. But in Eugene, that number had special significance because it had been worn by Heisman Trophy winner Marcus Mariota. There were many similarities between the two: They were both dual-threat quarterbacks who had piled up accolades along with yards and touchdowns. Both hailed from Hawaii and were shaped by the island spirit. Mariota chose the No. 8 initially because of the number of Hawaiian islands. His helmet's facemask was formed in an 808, Hawaii's area code. So Gabriel took a leap of faith and texted Mariota to ask his permission. Mariota, now with the NFL's Washington Commanders, said yes. "You know, when you’re growing up and you have that kind of direct example, a guy from Hawaii, playing at a high level, at the DI level, and then you see him go to the NFL, it’s like you can see it, you can believe it,” Gabriel said. Gabriel has led the top-ranked Ducks (12-0, 9-0 Big Ten) through an undefeated season and on to the Big Ten title game on Saturday against No. 4 Penn State (11-1, 8-1) in Indianapolis. Gabriel — who played his first three years at Central Florida before joining the Sooners — became the all-time NCAA leader for total career touchdowns along the way and now has 183, including 149 via pass, 33 via rush and one reception. He's tied with former Oregon quarterback Bo Nix — now with the Denver Broncos — with an FBS-record 61 career starts. Ever humble, Gabriel is thoughtful about the arc of his career. "I think we’re in an interesting time that’s all about results. And so many people talk about the process but aren’t patient enough. I think if you look at my body of work, I’m a guy who’s eager and wants to get better but has had that time to develop and work in that way. I think you see it over time," Gabriel said. As a Duck, Gabriel has thrown for 3,277 yards and 24 TDs in 12 games. He's rushed for seven more scores. Mariota spent his three-year college career at Oregon, throwing for 104 touchdowns and running for 29 more. He was the Ducks' quarterback in the 2014 season, the last time Oregon advanced to the national championship game. "I mean, everybody would love to run out there with the experience that we have at quarterback right now,” Oregon coach Dan Lanning said. “And I think that experience shows up consistently every Saturday for us. More than anything, just the ability for Dillon to be calm within the chaos that exists in a football game, and being a great decision-maker and understanding the scheme.” The only other time Oregon finished the regular season 12-0 was in 2010, when the Ducks played for the BCS national championship. Among the team's victories this season was a 32-31 win at home over Ohio State and a 38-17 victory over Michigan at the Big House. The Ducks capped the season with a 49-21 victory over rival Washington , finishing 9-0 in their first Big Ten year. Gabriel threw for a pair of touchdowns and ran for another in that game. The Nittany Lions advanced to the conference title game with a 44-7 victory over Maryland on Saturday. They were helped by Ohio State’s 13-10 loss to Michigan in Columbus. Oregon has played the Nittany Lions just one other time, in the 1995 Rose Bowl. Penn State, led by Joe Paterno, won that one, 38-20. The winner in Indianapolis this weekend can secure a first-round bye in the expanded 12-team playoffs. Both teams are assured of a playoff berth even with a loss. On Tuesday, Gabriel added another honor when he was named Big Ten offensive player of the year. "He’s earned the trust and the admiration of all his teammates and the coaches around him," Lanning said. "This guy prepares extremely hard. He is the calmest dude you’ve ever been around on the field, which is impressive, but I’m really proud of him and what he’s been able to do for this team.” Get poll alerts and updates on the AP Top 25 all the season. Article content Yesterday’s surprise resignation of Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares evidently hasn’t slowed the company’s electric-vehicle aspirations, as word comes today that the U.S. Energy Department has committed over US$7 billion to a joint venture between the company and Samsung SDI. The $7.54-billion loan is earmarked to build two electric vehicle battery plants in Komoko, Indiana under the StarPlus Energy LLC banner, with at least 2,800 jobs at the factories themselves, and hundreds of spin-off jobs. Conditions of the loan include StarPlus presenting a plan to work with community and labour leaders to create good-paying jobs, in addition to meeting technical, legal, environmental, and financial conditions. If finalized, Stellantis would get $6.85 billion in principal, plus $688 million in interest for the project. If approved, the two plants will produce battery cells and modules for electric vehicles to be sold in North America, and at full capacity will manufacture batteries to supply more than 650,000 electric vehicles per year. Plugged In Podcast: How long will an EV battery last? “This will greatly expand EV battery manufacturing capacity in North America and reduce America’s reliance on adversarial foreign nations like China,” the U.S. Energy Department said in a statement. What is unclear is whether the loan agreement can be signed before President-elect Donald Trump takes office on January 20. On the campaign trail, Trump vowed to stop such loans for the electric-vehicle industry. This news also comes on the heels of Rivian Automotive receiving a $6.6-billion loan last month to build a factory in Georgia. In other battery factory news south of the border, General Motors announced it is selling its stake in a battery factory in Lansing, Michigan to LG Energy Solutions. According to media reports, GM has spent nearly $1 billion on the joint venture with its South Korean partner LG, but is cutting ties with the nearly completed facility. In a statement, GM said it will source its EV batteries from joint venture factories in Warren, Ohio; and Spring Hill, Tennessee. The company also said it has reached an agreement with LG to jointly develop prismatic battery cells, an emerging technology that features rectangular cells that can store more energy, thus reducing the size and weight of a battery pack and cutting costs when compared to the pouch cells GM currently uses. Through September of this year, new EV sales in the United States were up 7.2%, or 936,000 vehicles, compared to that period last year, which saw a whopping 47% growth rate. Despite that slowing sales curve, EV sales in the States are expected to beat last year’s record of 1.19 million vehicles.
