Volume was thin Thursday with several international markets closed and many participants extending their holiday fun. Stocks opened the day lower but found their way into positive territory by lunchtime. The enthusiasm faded into the close, however, putting this year's Santa Claus rally at risk. The Santa Claus rally is "officially defined as the last five trading days of the year plus the first two trading days of the new year," says Adam Turnquist , chief technical strategist for LPL Financial. "Since 1950, the S&P 500 has generated average and median returns of 1.3% during this period, widely outpacing the market's average seven-day return of 0.3%." Turnquist adds that when stocks deliver a positive Santa Claus rally return, "the S&P 500 has generated an average January and forward annual return of 1.4% and 10.4%, respectively." After closing higher in Tuesday's abbreviated session, the Dow Jones Industrial Average finished today up 0.07% at 43,325, while the S&P 500 was 0.04% lower at 6,037, and the Nasdaq Composite had shed 0.05% to 20,020. Investors shouldn't worry about short-term volatility "The recent volatility appears to be a combination of a Fed more cautious about cutting than hoped for, and the difficult-to-forecast bold changes proposed by the Trump administration which while bullish in theory might be costly in the short term," says Louis Navellier, chairman and founder of Navellier & Associates . Despite any short-term struggles, Navellier reminds us that "we've had two very strong years in the stock market" and that looking ahead, artificial intelligence (AI) promises to bring big gains in productivity and interest rates are likely to continue falling. "Even without a Santa Claus Rally, there's a lot to celebrate and look forward to," he says. Continuing claims hit a three-year high Initial jobless claims headlined a relatively light economic calendar . Data from the Labor Department showed first-time filings fell by 1,000 in the week ending December 21, to 219,000. More notable was that continuing claims rose to 1.91 million from 1.86 million the week prior – the highest level since November 2021. "For now, the consumer has a healthy appetite for travel and other discretionary items but elevated continuing claims suggest a slowdown in the job market," says Jeffrey Roach , chief economist for LPL Financial. Analysts think Palantir can fall by 45% In single-stock news, Palantir Technologies ( PLTR ) fell 0.3% even after Wedbush analyst Daniel Ives said the data analytics firm is one of the best software companies to benefit from AI in 2025. "We believe Palantir has a credible path to morph into the next Oracle ( ORCL ) over the coming decade with (Artificial Intelligence Platform) leading the way as many on the Street continue to be huge skeptics of the Messi of AI," the analyst says. Ives is arguably one of the biggest bulls in Palantir's corner with an Outperform (Buy) rating and a $75 price target – though this still sits 8% below the share price. The consensus recommendation of the 21 analysts following the newest Nasdaq-100 stock surveyed by S&P Global Market Intelligence is Hold and the average price target is $43.90 – a more than 45% discount to current levels. UBS Global Research analyst Karl Keirstead recently initiated coverage on Palantir with a Neutral (Hold) rating. He had a "very positive" review of PLTR's fundamentals, with customers and other checks "almost all bullish" on the value they are getting. "The main thing keeping us on the sidelines is valuation," Keirstead says after the stock has surged nearly fivefold this year, adding that this is "simply tough to get over." BROOKLYN, N.Y. — As Jamahl Mosley has continued to adjust Orlando ‘s lineups in the absence of Paolo Banchero , the Magic coach has seemingly found one that thrives on both ends of the court. It’s who the Magic have started the last two games, including Friday night against the Nets at Barclays Center: Jalen Suggs, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Franz Wagner, Wendell Carter Jr. and Goga Bitadze. It’s also a group that wasn’t possible to put on the floor when Carter missed 12 games in a row due to left foot plantar fasciitis. But until Banchero (torn right abdominal muscle) returns to the court, it’s a lineup that allows the Magic to spread the floor on offense, attack the paint and impose their will on defense. “It’s kind of hard to score on that,” said Caldwell-Pope said of Orlando’s newest starting lineup after the Magic’s fifth win in a row and their 11th in the past 12 games Friday. At 6-foot-5, he and Suggs are technically the shortest players amongst the lengthy group that includes the 6-10 Wagner, 6-10 Carter and 6-11 Bitadze. “When you’ve got me, Suggs, [and] Franz guarding the wings, and then if you get past us, you’ve got two big guys down there,” Caldwell-Pope said. He described Carter and Bitadze as shot-blockers who can also change a lot of shots and clean up the glass for Orlando (14-7). “They’re getting rebounds for us and that’s when we get out and push in transition; what we’re starting to get better at,” the veteran guard said of Orlando’s two big men. And Caldwell-Pope is right. The lineup of Suggs, Caldwell-Pope, Wagner, Carter and Bitadze has allowed zero offensive boards to opponents in the two games they’ve played together, according to NBA.com . As an entire team, the Magic outrebounded the Nets 40-35, which included an 11-5 advantage on offensive boards. They added 13 blocks (5 of which came from Bitadze) and 13 steals. By the end of the night, Orlando had scored 34 points of 20 Brooklyn turnovers. Beede’s Breakdown: How Magic’s 3s powered NBA Cup win at Nets “It’s working,” Bitadze told reporters in the locker room about playing alongside Carter. “We’re locking it up. Teams are really struggling to score against us, so I guess we are playing good defense.” The advanced numbers back up his claim. Among the six Magic lineups that have played at least 29 minutes together, the quintet of Suggs, Caldwell-Pope, Wagner, Carter and Bitadze has a team-best net-rating at plus-48.3, according to NBA.com. That’s thanks to not only a solid 98.3 defensive rating but also an impressive 146.6 offensive rating. While still a small sample size, it’s noteworthy for a new starting lineup from the Magic. “I’m sure it’s an adjustment for them two as well, but I feel like they’re doing a great job,” Wagner said of the Carter-Bitadze duo. “Obviously, it requires a little bit of communication [with] guys playing out of their position, especially Wendell. “But I feel like Wendell’s doing a great job of finding his way back into things,” he added. As Bitadze has found success in the paint on offense, it’s been Carter who helps out on the perimeter on offense. They’re also both capable passers, with Carter dishing out 4 assists vs. Brooklyn and Bitadze 3. Although he only made his lone 3-point attempt vs. Brooklyn, Carter’s presence alone impacts Caldwell-Pope, Suggs and Wagner, a trio that shot 9 of 17 (53%) from distance on Friday. “I haven’t been shooting it well, so he can spread the floor and we crash the glass and dominate the glass inside with me and him, too,” Bitadze said about playing alongside Carter. “Defensively as well, we’re a force, so it’s easy.” Added Carter about the duo after practice Saturday: “It’s not really an adjustment. We’re both defensive-minded players and we take a lot of pride on the defensive end. Playing with Goga, if anything it makes a lot easier on that end.” But the Magic aren’t satisfied. They know the work continues through the long haul after just a quarter of the way through the season and entering a Sunday afternoon re-match against the Nets (9-11). Gary Harris (left hamstring strain) will miss his third consecutive contest against Brooklyn. “We can do even better than this,” Bitadze said. “We always expect the best and not let other teams score at all. We would love that — not to let them score. But it’s been working well.” The Magic also understand and appreciate the job done by Mosley since Banchero went down Oct. 30 at Chicago. Orlando has gone 11-5 in the time Banchero has missed. “Shoutout to Mosley for keeping us together,” Bitadze said of his coach. “To really focus on defense is hard in this league, and that’s what we’ve done. We’re winning games; we’re trusting our defense. So it’s working well. “We’ve got to keep trusting.” Jason Beede can be reached at jbeede@orlandosentinel.com Up next ... A British woman has become the fifth foreigner to die after a suspected methanol poisoning in Laos, as Australian Holly Bowles fights for life in a Bangkok hospital. or signup to continue reading Simone White, 28, a lawyer from southeast London, has been identified by British media as among the tourists who died after consuming drinks suspected to have been laced with methanol. "We are supporting the family of a British woman who has died in Laos, and we are in contact with the local authorities," Britain's foreign ministry said in a statement. An Australian, two Danes and an American have also died in the apparent mass poisoning in Vang Vieng, a popular tourist town in the landlocked Southeast Asian nation. Melbourne teenager Bianca Jones, 19, was confirmed to have died by her family on Thursday, sparking a wave of emotional tributes from loved ones and political leaders. Her friend Holly Bowles, also 19, continues to fight for her life in a different Bangkok hospital. The pair, from Beaumaris in Melbourne's southeast, had been holidaying in Laos when they became ill along with a dozen other tourists in Vang Vieng last week. They had planned to stay at the Nana Backpacker Hostel in Vang Vieng and drank at the venue before reportedly going to Jaidee Bar on November 11. Ms Jones and Ms Bowles did not leave their dorm room for 24 hours and reported feeling unwell on November 13, before being taken to separate hospitals in Bangkok. Shaun Bowles told reporters outside Bangkok Hospital on Wednesday that his daughter remained in critical condition and on life support. "We just like to thank everyone from back home for all of the support and love that we're receiving," he said. "But we'd also like the people to appreciate right now, we just need privacy so we can spend as much time as we can with Holly." Consular assistance is being provided to the families of the two Australians girls. Hostel manager Duong Duc Toan said the Australian women had joined more than 100 other guests for free shots of Lao vodka offered by the hostel as a gesture of hospitality. Thai authorities confirmed Ms Jones had died by "brain swelling due to high levels of methanol found in her system". The Australian government has updated its travel advice for Laos, telling residents to be alert to the potential risk of spirit-based drinks including cocktails. Foreign Minister Penny Wong said drink-spiking and methanol poisoning were "far too common in many parts of the world". "At this time I would say to parents, to young people, please have a conversation about risks, please inform yourselves, please let's work together to ensure this tragedy does not happen again," she said. Ms White's friend Bethany Clarke also urged tourists in the region to avoid local spirits. "Just avoid them as so not worth it," she wrote in a Laos backpacking Facebook group. "Six of us who drank from the same place are in hospital currently with methanol poisoning." One New Zealand citizen has also fallen ill in Laos and could be a victim of methanol poisoning, New Zealand's Foreign Ministry said. "Travellers are advised to be cautious about consuming alcoholic beverages, particularly cocktails and drinks made with spirits that may have been adulterated with harmful substances," it said.
