Rutaremara, 80, has a political career spanning over five decades and has held numerous roles, including serving as Ombudsman and chaired the commission that drafted the 2003 constitution. He also served as a senator and member of parliament. He is flanked by over a dozen other seasoned individuals who boast experience not only in leadership but also in aspects like family and parenting, business, research, and beyond. We do all types of research, analysing writings, holding discussions, and studying public opinions, Rutaremara told The New Times. Though it is composed of older people, the forum does research on contemporary topics like the Fourth Industrial Revolution, which, according to Rutaremara, they have carried out a research on Rwanda’s readiness to embrace it. The Fourth Industrial Revolution, often called 4IR or Industry 4.0, is a term used to describe the current era of technological advancement where digital, physical, and biological systems are merging. A “purely advisory” mandate Rutaremara clarified that REAF's role is purely advisory, and so, to discharge its responsibilities, the forum conducts research, reading, interviews and public consultations and comes up with a position paper which is then presented to relevant organs. REAF's mandate covers a broad range of issues, including national policy direction, governance challenges, justice, the economy, and social welfare. The forum may present its advice either upon the president's request or independently. Members of the council are appointed by the president, who also oversees the forum through his office. The council is typically composed of seven members, although the number can be adjusted as the country’s needs evolve. At least 30 per cent of the members must be female. Making decisions The forum has two main organisational bodies: The Council of Elders, which is REAF’s highest decision-making body, and the Bureau of REAF. The bureau consists of the Chairperson and Vice Chairperson, who are responsible for leading the council's activities, preparing meetings, implementing resolutions, and coordinating with other government bodies to ensure smooth collaboration. The Council of Elders’ decisions are reached through consensus; however, if consensus is not possible, an absolute majority vote among the members present will determine the outcome. has been sued by investors who claim that the media conglomerate lied about potential fallout from its loss of rights. A proposed class action, filed in New York federal court on Monday, accuses WBD of mischaracterizing the impact that losing rights to regular and postseason games for its TNT network would have on its business. In August, a month after the NBA officially rejected WBD’s offer to match the rights package that it cut with Amazon, the company $9.1 billion goodwill impairment charge related to the depreciation of its TV networks, which accounts for its failure to renew its deal with the league. The company’s stock fell by nearly nine percent in after-hours trading the day the announcement was made. TNT has been a broadcast partner with the NBA since 1988, paying an annual average fee of $1.2 billion under its existing agreement with the league. Earlier this year, the NBA entered into discussions with various partners for a new round of deals after WBD failed to reach a new contract within its exclusive negotiating window. In July, the NBA announced a trio of blockbuster TV and streaming rights packages with Disney, NBCUniversal and Amazon. The lawsuit takes issue with WBD’s failure to disclose that the loss of NBA rights were likely to cause the company to significantly reevaluate its business, reflected in the massive impairment charge. It points to optimistic statements about WBD’s prospects this year from chief executive David Zaslav, who said in a February earnings calls that the company is “now on solid footing with a clear pathway to growth” and is “confident in its ability to drive sustained operating momentum and enhanced shareholder value.” In regard to the state of negotiations with the NBA at the time, he said discussions were “constructive and productive.” When an analyst noted the positive news, WBD chief financial officer Gunnar Wiedenfels responded, “It’s very easy to lose control over sports rights investments,” the lawsuit says. He added, “That’s not what we do. We’re going — we know exactly what value we assign and we stay disciplined during our discussions.” Investors take aim at “boilerplate” representations regarding WBD’s investments in securing licenses for sports programming in its impairment analysts last year. The company stated that its ability to obtain the licenses “will not have a material adverse effect on our business, financial condition or results of operations” while downplaying the risk of impairment charges, according to the complaint. “Plainly, the foregoing risk warning was a generic, catch-all provision that was not tailored to WBD’s actual known risks regarding its sports rights negotiations with the NBA,” states the lawsuit. In May, after WBD’s exclusive sports rights negotiating window with the NBA expired without a deal, Zaslav in an earnings call touted the company’s decades-long partnership with the league and its rights to match any competing offers. The lawsuit targets WBD neglecting to disclose in financial filings the increased risk of recording billions of dollars in impairment charges if it were to lose NBA rights. When WBD reported its second quarter earnings in August, Wiedenfels pointed to “sports right discussion like the one with the NBA” as a “triggering event” for the reevaluation of the company’s business. He explained, “That’s what then leads to evaluation, which in the second quarter happened to be $9.1 billion below what was on the books for the network segment.” To pursue the lawsuit, investors must prove that the defendants, who include Zaslav and Wiedenfels, knew that their statements were misleading or were acting in reckless disregard of the information known to them at the time. Posting anonymously in the Facebook group ‘MDW in Singapore’ on Friday (Nov 22), she opened up about feeling overwhelmed and stressed at work. She wrote that “she’s been doing her best at her job,” but the stress of dealing with her employer’s mood swings and the tough work environment has taken a serious toll on her. “I feel really stressed and [find it] difficult to cope with my working environment,” she lamented. “I cannot take the feeling of my stress anymore and can’t eat and sleep well because of this.” When she tried to discuss her decision to terminate her contract, her employer dismissed her concerns and insisted that she stay and continue working. “Is the mental health of the helper not a valid reason to terminate the contract? Cause my employer, I don’t know if she understands or just doesn’t want to understand,” she wrote, asking for advice. “Employers have no right to hold a helper when there is no more peace.” In the comments section, many netizens agreed that her employer cannot ‘force’ her to keep working and that mental health is a valid reason to resign. They encouraged her to talk to her employer about the decision again, clarifying that her well-being was at stake and that she could not continue under such stressful conditions. One netizen said, “Apologies to say, but employers have no right to hold a helper when there is no more peace. If the helper is stressed and depressed because of the workload, and there is no more understanding between them and no more consideration about what’s happening, why should the helper still be there? Employers cannot refuse to cancel a work pass (such as an EP, S Pass, or Work Permit), and they cannot use this as a means to pressure or punish employees during disputes. Fort Worth took center stage in the State Board of Education’s debate over a now-approved curriculum that incorporates Bible stories in reading lessons . The board voted 8-7 to approve Bluebonnet Learning , an optional curriculum that uses reading lessons to supplement concepts in other subjects, such as social studies. State lawmakers called for the new curriculum as a solution to boost lagging reading proficiency rates across Texas. However, critics argue the material overwhelmingly features Christian values and history. A decisive vote from the District 13 member, who represents eastern portions of Fort Worth and Tarrant County, likely paved the way for the instructional materials’ adoption. The seat had been vacant since its previous holder, Dallas Democrat Aicha Davis, resigned for her now-successful campaign for a Texas House seat. Gov. Greg Abbott appointed Pantego Republican Leslie Recine on Nov. 1 to hold the seat “until her successor is duly elected and qualified.” DeSoto Democrat Tiffany Clark , who was elected Nov. 5 to the District 13 seat on the State Board of Education, was caught off guard by the appointment of Recine, who will serve until Clark takes her seat in January, she told the Fort Worth Report. Recine, a Pantego resident who works in government relations, voted to approve the curriculum in the narrow vote. Clark was upset not to be part of the voting process; she would have voted against the curriculum’s approval because of its focus on Christianity, she said. Hardy found the curriculum was not age appropriate after reviewing the materials and consulting with educators and parents in her district, she said. She supports the inclusion of biblical principles in school. Another point of contention for Hardy? Bluebonnet’s lack of elementary lessons about the founding of the U.S., which she believes would help students be good, patriotic citizens, the former history teacher said. “Teaching children to be good citizens aligns with the Golden Rule and the Good Samaritan,” Hardy said. “Based on my many years’ of experience as an educator, I believe that the Texas Bluebonnet Learning OER (Open Educational Resources) fails to provide the high-quality instruction that will improve our students’ academic outcomes.” Hardy’s successor, Parker County Republican Brandon Hall , has thrown his support behind the new curriculum. Hall defeated Hardy during the Republican primary in March. “It’s official! Clark, in her review of the material, didn’t see the problems Hardy outlined in her reasoning for opposing the curriculum. Clark saw some positives in the curriculum’s focus on phonics and its approaches to teaching literacy, she said, but felt that they were outweighed by the cons. “I think you can teach literacy and phonics without biblical context,” Clark, who is Christian, said. “When you start talking about phonics, you don’t need a Bible verse to teach those skills.” Many educators and parents in her district, she said, want to embed their own religious values in their children.
