Once again Munster came up short against modest French opposition in the Champions Cup with a distracted, disconnected, ill-disciplined and error-prone performance. Although Castres maintained their unbeaten home record, this was a missed opportunity for Munster. A scrappy contest was dominated by the whistle of pernickety English referee Christophe Ridley, who penalised each side a whopping 17 times, but Munster could not avail of the three yellow cards for a Castres side that played on the edge and were more physical and direct. With that in mind, the Munster think tank must privately question their decision to rest Gavin Coombes for the first time since the season before last season, and one lost count of the handling errors in Munster’s stilted running game. Right from the off it was hard to keep up with the elementary errors which Munster were making in addition to some over-elaborate and laboured handling. A lack of intent in the collisions and at the breakdown was evident. Jack Crowley missed a penalty to touch and Munster conceded soft penalties, leading to a narrow escape when hooker Gaetan Barlot just failed to complete the grounding to his own chip with an advantage play The former Connacht number eight Abraham Papalii was then prevented from grounding over the line by his opposite number and Champions Cup debutant Brian Gleeson. [ Castres 16 Munster 14 as it happened Opens in new window ] But the warnings were not heeded. When Munster attempted to reach the edge well inside their own 10-metre line Tom Farrell’s intended pass to Thaakir Abrahams was forward and a second high tackle by Stephen Archer led to Castres going to the corner again. Jeremy Davidson and co had done their homework, the heavily involved Tyler Ardron popping the ball down at the front of the lineout for Papali’I to target the blindside defence of Craig Casey and Abrahams to crash over. Calvin Nash’s aerial abilities earned some momentum but a 42-metre penalty by Jack Crowley, who didn’t seem to be striking the ball well, fell short. Short-term signing Dian Bleuler then copped Jack Goodhue’s knee on the head due to his own no-arms tackle, which meant Dave Kilcoyne coming on barely 20 minutes in for his first game in almost exactly a year. And he had a tough night. Crowley kicked out on the full, Peter O’Mahony was pinged for side entry and Papali’i tapped and charged before Quentin Walcker crashed through Kilcoyne’s tackle to score. The only plus for Munster at this stage was that Jeremy Fernandez again missed the kickable conversion, albeit Casey had to be carried off with what looked a problematic knee injury. There were also injuries for David Kilcoyne, Peter O’Mahony and Craig Casey. So, when Walcker was binned for a high shot on Gleeson and Crowley kicked toward the corner, Niall Scannell’s throw hit Tadgh Beirne and John Hodnett peeled infield and ploughed through three tackles with a combination of footwork and strength for a fine try. What’s more, Crowley landed a good conversion, although even then Mike Haley kicked out on the full to invite some additional and unnecessary pressure before trotting off grateful to be 10-7 down. Munster looked well-placed when Geoffrey Palis was rightly binned on the resumption for a cynical deliberate knock-on to prevent Crowley’s pass reaching Farrell. But Munster made an absolute mess of the lineout – again being over-elaborate. Instead, a couple of scrum penalties led to Fernandez making it 13-7 before Palis returned without Munster troubling the scoreboard. They also had a fortunate reprieve after Tadhg Beirne had conceded a daft penalty when flying off his feet when Julien Dumora somehow missed a penalty from almost straight in front of the posts. Munster responded by going to their catch-and-drive, which earned a couple more close-range penalties and a yellow card for the Castres replacement prop Nicolas Corato for blatantly pulling down the maul. Even then, the next lineout malfunctioned, but was retried by Beirne, and Munster went through the phases. Diarmuid Barron, Jack O’Donoghue and Beirne again made inroads before Hodnett burrowed over his second try, which was awarded on review despite Santiago Arata seeming to force a knock-on from Paddy Patterson. Crowley converted for the lead, but Munster’s weakened scrum was again pinged for Louis le Brun to kick Castres 16-14 ahead. Despite Archer returning for Kilcoyne, with Oli Jager moving to loosehead, the scrum coughed up another penalty. They had one final shot from just inside halfway, and understandably opted to go up the line, but much like the performance, Crowley’s kick fell short of that target too. Scoring sequence: 13 mins Papali’I try 5-0; 30 mins Walcker try 10-0; 37 mins Hodnett try, Crowley con 10-7; (half-time 10-7); 49 Fernandez pen 13-7; 69 mins Hodnett try, Crowley con 13-14; 73 mins le Brun pen 16-14. Castres Olympique: Julien Dumora; Geoffrey Palis, Jack Goodhue, Andrea Cocagi, Rémy Baget; Louis le Brun, Jeremy Fernandez; Quentin Walcker, Gaetan Barlot, Will Collier, Gauthier Maravat, Leone Nakarawa, Mathieu Babillot (capt), Tyler Ardron, Abraham Papalii. Middle East latest: Israeli strikes in Gaza kill more than 50 people, including kidsStock market today: Nvidia drags Wall Street from its records as oil and gold risePHILADELPHIA — Eagles fans serenaded Saquon Barkley with chants of “MVP!” after a 9-yard run gave him the team’s season rushing record. Barkley set the record in style — passing Eagles Hall of Famers Wilbert Montgomery and record holder LeSean McCoy in a single game — as he rushed for 124 yards to push his season total to 1,623 in a 22-16 victory over Carolina. The total was enough for Barkley to top McCoy’s 1,607 yards in 2013. Barkley also maintained his pace to break Eric Dickerson’s NFL single-season rushing record of 2,105 yards, set in 1984 with the Los Angeles Rams. At his pace, Barkley should that reach milestone, even possibly ahead of the 17th game of the season that Dickerson and the NFL did not have in 1984. Barkley captioned an Instagram post “Thankful” with a checked box next to “franchise single-season rushing yards record.” People are also reading... Here’s a look at what’s ahead for Barkley and his chances of catching Dickerson: Where does Barkley stand? Barkley leads the NFL in rushing with 1,623 yards, a hefty 216 yards ahead of Baltimore's Derrick Henry at 1,407 (though the Ravens had a bye Sunday). He is averaging 124.8 yards per game. At that pace, and with one more game to play than Dickerson had, he would become the top single-season rusher in NFL history. He needs 483 yards over the final four games to top Dickerson’s 40-year-old record. Barkley is on pace for 2,122 yards, which would put him just 17 yards beyond Dickerson's 2,105 total. What's the schedule like? Just on the quality of defenses alone, Barkley faces little pushback down the stretch. He feasted against a Panthers defense that was one of the worst against the run in the NFL. Barkley averaged 6.2 yards on 20 carries against Carolina and could easily expect to match that pace over at least three of the next four games. The Steelers come to Philadelphia on Sunday and should provide the stiffest test to Barkley in his record pursuit. Pittsburgh is fourth in the NFL in run defense. After the Steelers, Barkley could run wild. The Eagles' final three opponents — Washington, Dallas and the Giants — all rank near the bottom of the league against the run. Can Barkley stay healthy? Barkley has been a workhorse this season and worked a heavy load in New York — when he was healthy. Barkley only twice played in 16 games with the Giants. He played in 14 games last season, missing three because of a high ankle sprain. He ran for 962 yards and six touchdowns. He was limited to two games in 2020 after he suffered a torn ACL. Barkley has played through minor injuries this season and proved his durability by leading the NFL with 266 carries. But injuries might not be his only potential problem. The Eagles' nine-game winning streak has them sitting as the No. 2 seed in the NFC. Should they clinch that spot early, the final game against New York could be meaningless and coach Nick Sirianni could have to decide if Barkley goes for the mark or sits out ahead of the playoffs. A bid by The Onion satirical news outlet to buy Alex Jones' conspiracy theory platform Infowars returned Monday to a Texas courtroom, where a judge heard arguments on whether a bankruptcy auction was properly run as Jones alleges collusion and fraud. U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Christopher Lopez in Houston is looking into the November auction and how a trustee chose The Onion over the only other bidder — a company affiliated with Jones that offered twice as much money as The Onion. The judge said the hearing would last into Monday evening and pick up again on Tuesday afternoon. The sale of Infowars is part of Jones' personal bankruptcy case , which he filed in late 2022 after he was ordered to pay nearly $1.5 billion in defamation lawsuits in Connecticut and Texas filed by relatives of victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Connecticut. Jones repeatedly called the 2012 shooting that killed 20 children and six educators a hoax staged by actors and aimed at increasing gun control. Most of the proceeds from the sale of Infowars, as well as many of Jones' personal assets, will go to the Sandy Hook families to help satisfy judgments issued by juries and judges in state courts in Connecticut and Texas. Some proceeds will go to Jones' other creditors. The Onion, which wants to turn Infowars' website and social media accounts into parodies , offered $1.75 million for Infowars' assets in the auction, while First United American Companies — which runs a website in Jones’ name that sells nutritional supplements — bid $3.5 million. The Onion's bid also included a pledge by many of the Sandy Hook families to forgo some or all of the auction proceeds due to them to give other creditors a total of $100,000 more than they would receive under other bids. The trustee, Christopher Murray, chose The Onion, saying its proposal was better for creditors because they would receive more money. Joshua Wolfshohl, an attorney for Murray, told the judge Monday that no wrongdoing occurred during the auction. He called the complaints by Jones and First United American Companies unfounded. “The vast majority of their complaints are just fantastic, imagined conspiracy theories that have no basis in reality," he said. Jones' lawyer, Ben Broocks, questioned Murray's rationale for choosing The Onion and alleged that a recent deposition of the trustee showed improprieties. He also questioned the validity of The Onion's bid, saying it was technically valued at $7 million because of the incentive offered by the Sandy Hook families. An auction company executive involved in the sale testified most of the afternoon. In court filings, Jones and First United American Companies accused Murray, The Onion and the Sandy Hook families of illegally colluding on the bidding, committing fraud and violating the judge's rules for the auction. Murray, The Onion and the families deny the allegations. In his own court filing, Murray called the allegations “a disappointed bidder’s improper attempt to influence an otherwise fair and open auction process.” Up for sale at the auction were all the equipment and other assets in the Infowars studio in Austin, Texas, as well as its social media accounts, websites, video archive and product trademarks. Jones uses the studio to broadcast his far-right, conspiracy theory-filled shows on the Infowars website, his account on the social platform X and radio stations. Jones has set up another studio, websites and social media accounts in case The Onion wins approval to buy Infowars and kicks him out. Jones has said he could continue using the Infowars platforms if the auction winner is friendly to him. Jones is appealing the $1.5 billion in judgments citing free speech rights but has acknowledged that the school shooting happened . On Friday, a Connecticut appeals court reduced by $150 million the original $1.44 billion judgment against Jones in the lawsuit against him in that state, but upheld the rest of the award. Jones' lawyer said he will ask Connecticut's highest court to review the appellate ruling. Jones is also appealing a $50 million judgment in a similar Texas defamation lawsuit.Middle East latest: Israeli strikes in Gaza kill more than 50 people, including kidsThe Debate About Whether Men Have Been Left Behind Is Decades Old
As I don’t want to waste energy being disappointed in the Los Angeles Chargers for losing yet another game to the Chiefs, we’ll instead look forward. The Chargers face the Buccaneers soon and here are some things they should keep in mind: Los Angeles Chargers Must Have An Airtight Run Defense Buccaneers running backs Bucky Irving and Rachaad White have been playing complementary roles this season and keeping the running game on track, as the Bucs currently rank eighth in rushing offense. Irving has even been outplaying White at times and has six rushing touchdowns and 735 rushing yards on the season. The Los Angeles Chargers run defense has picked up in the last couple of games as safety Derwin James Jr. is starting to heat up, while linebacker Daiyan Henley has been really consistent when it comes to the run. The Chargers just have to make sure to not let any explosive plays through, and they should be in good shape. Don’t Let Buccaneers Quarterback Baker Mayfield Bake The pass rush was on point against the Chiefs on Sunday night as, all together, the Chargers got 12 hits, 11 hurries, and four sacks on Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes. Outside linebackers, Khalil Mack and Tuli Tuipulotu got pressure on Mahomes right from the jump on a third-and-10 during the first drive of the game for a sack. Where the pass rush failed was deeper into the fourth quarter, where Mahomes was able to escape the pocket and get the ball to Chiefs wide receiver Xavier Worthy for a first down. And then a little after that, Mahomes was able to escape again to the 34-yard line for a first down, inching the Chiefs closer and closer to field goal range. Also Read: Los Angeles Chargers Key Offensive Players Injury Should Raise Concerns The Los Angeles Chargers did the one thing you can’t do, which is allow Mahomes to make plays in crunch time, and Mayfield is similar. Mayfield has had quite the bounce back since he arrived in Tampa Bay in 2023. Right now he’s a few passing touchdowns away from last year’s career-high ( 34 ) and his passing yardage is also on pace to meet 2023’s. He can extend plays with his legs and evade pressure, as well as really sling the ball. In the last few games, James played a handful of snaps on the defensive line which has really helped to create some extra headaches for quarterbacks, so perhaps he can be used in that area in this next game, as he has sacked Mayfield by coming off the line in the past. If Mayfield gets on a roll, the Chargers pass rush needs to keep their foot on the gas. If He Plays, Shutdown Buccaneers Wide Receiver Mike Evans After returning from a hamstring injury that kept him sidelined until Week 12, Evans has become even more of a critical target after Buccaneers wide receiver Chris Godwin was placed on IR due to an ankle injury. Though the Buccaneers do have other weapons like wide receiver Sterling Shepard, their running backs, as well as tight end Cade Otton, it’s really Evans that the Los Angeles Chargers should be worried about. Evans is a high-powered receiver capable of making those contested catches. The Chargers will need the skills of Henley as well as cornerbacks Cam Hart and Tarheeb Still, Molden, James, really anyone and everyone, to make sure that Evans is not able to be that difference-maker. Get The Offense Going in The First Half The Los Angeles Chargers offense was struggling in the first half against the Chiefs on Sunday night and had no touchdowns or field goals prior to the second half. The run game was also struggling in the first half and managed to get going in the second, where running back Gus Edwards was able to get his second rushing touchdown of the season. The second half was also where other receiving options started to emerge, as tight end Stone Smartt had two first downs, including a leaping catch to get a first-and-goal before Edwards’ touchdown a couple of plays later. Running back Kimani Vidal also had some good runs, including breaking through for a first down during the third quarter. But, all of these bright spots came during the second half and if the Los Angeles Chargers had been making plays like this throughout, the game wouldn’t have come down to a field goal. The Chargers relied too much on their defense to carry them through and they just cannot expect to win games if they can only get the offense going during one particular half. Start Relying On Other Offensive Playmakers The go-to’s on the Los Angeles Chargers this season have been wide receivers Quentin Johnston, and Ladd McConkey, running back J.K. Dobbins, and tight end Will Dissly. With some injuries popping up, especially for McConkey, Dobbins, and Dissly, as Dobbins is on injured reserve, McConkey was out this past game, and Dissly got hurt on Sunday, it’s time the Chargers start relying on others to see them through. Smartt managed to make a couple of plays where it really counted against the Chiefs, while Vidal sparked the run game. Wide receiver Derius Davis has been earning more snaps outside of special teams. Wide receiver D.J. Chark could also be an option if he’s given more playing time. Johnston luckily is still healthy and did make up on Sunday for some less-than-stellar performances recently, but the Los Angeles Chargers have depth pieces, and they should start relying on some of them because they’ll need every single one as they head into the last few games of the regular season. Both stars were selected for the dreaded food challenge, which sees contestants forced to eat unusual cuisine without throwing up. Viewers expect the Bushtucker Trials to be disgusting, but this year fans of the show found themselves unable to watch as Rev Richard choked back mice feet. Then things got even worse as Tulisa had to chow down on a selection of spiders.
