KINGSTON, Jamaica — Member of Parliament (MP) for St Andrew South Western, Dr Angela Brown Burke has expressed mixed feelings regarding the recently declared state of emergency in her constituency. A SOE was declared across the St Andrew South Police Division and sections of St Andrew Central on Thursday following a significant increase in violent criminal activities in Waltham Park Road, Maxfield Avenue, and Waterhouse. READ: SOE declared in St Andrew South; sections of St Andrew Central police divisions In an interview with Observer Online shortly after, Dr Brown Burke shared that while she does not believe in using SOEs as a crime fighting tool, she has to trust the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) to do their job. “I genuinely believe that state of emergency is not an ideal crime fighting tool and that it is only a temporary measure and it is not a lasting solution and so my preference would not be to have that but I’m not a crime fighter and I have to depend on the JCF and those who are in crime fighting to fight the crime that they are facing,” she said. “I can only hope that the temporary release of powers that we will have will be enough for us to be able to move on to a more lasting solution,” Dr Brown Burke continued. The MP anticipates that different communities will react differently to the SOE. “The citizens from parts of Whitfield Town Division, parts of Payneland, parts of Cockburn Pen will welcome it, especially with the kind of murders that they have seen and how frequently that has been and how many that they have seen. They really want to feel like something is happening and they want to see a difference. And so I know that they will sleep easier tonight knowing that,” Dr Brown Burke said. “I know though that persons from the Greenwich Town Division and in particular the Greenwich Town community are going to be asking some questions. It was just a couple weeks ago that we met with the commanding officer from St Andrew South with residents, in particular small business owners, asking for an easing up of the opening hours and that based on the discussion they would have thought that since in their particular area they have not had any of those murders or crimes being committed, I’m sure they would have been looking for some easing up instead of a locking down. “At the end of the day what we do want are individuals feeling safer, to be in their homes, to come home from school, from work, to walk the streets and in more places than not I believe that they will feel safe out of this,” she added. “Again my only hope is that this is not, as it has been so often, just a band-aid that is used. But having cleaned the wound, having placed the band-aid, we need to be thinking at the same time about more permanent fixes to the real deep social problems that we have.”Man City blows 3-goal lead and gets booed by fans in draw with Feyenoord in Champions League
Oh, Obama changed America. It's just not in the way Jon thinks. It felt like America could change https://t.co/l2Gwt2302K No, because long before the election I realized that Obama said a lot of pretty words that said nothing, not that I was happy about McCain as the other choice. https://t.co/q9I0ptWlNE We did. Cry more, Jeff. Maybe things can get back to somewhat normal in the next 4 years. It did, he stoked racial animosity and polarization and gave aid and comfort to fringe lunatics in academia. We now live in that world. It did. Trumpism is a direct response to Obamaism. Welcome to the hell you helped create. Yes. Conservatives were so tired of Obama world politics and loved the guy who was finally willing to stand up to it. I remember 1980, a time when it felt like America could change for the better... and it did. President Reagan actually loved America. Uhhh America did change. But not for the better like all those hopeful voters thought lol Many voters were tired of the war in the Middle East and the economy. They thought Obama might be a good answer. They were wrong. It did change. Boy, did it change. Was it not to your liking? This was the start of massive decline and division thanks Obama Actually, no thanks at all, Obama. The funny thing is that Trump is President because of Obama’s presidency. They don't get it. Yeah, and then after Wall Street was bailed out and the Middle East was droned and the public option was killed, we realized it was just a slogan from a fancy piece of speechwriting, and we had been played by the Democratic Party. Well said. Wasn’t as good as this map. pic.twitter.com/ec5RQVKLuJ pic.twitter.com/nUr1U1hAZ9 It's beautiful. people being bamboozled by a smooth-talking, double-speaking operator and the media spending the last years leading up to election demonizing the right just like they do every election cycle A silver tongued speaker does not equal an effective leader. It did. Obama laid waste to the Democrat Party and supercharged the ugly polarization with which we are now dealing. America should be grateful for that first part. Yep, and then democrats made everything about identity politics and pandering to the mentally ill. Americans had enough when they continued to push boundaries. It did...it became incredibly decisive and we endured a slowest recovery from a recession in history. 2016 was like the first sunshine in a decade. Hopefully, 2025 brings the sunshine back again.
All the winners from Grand Prix d’Horologerie de Geneve, the Oscars of watchmakingNoneThis was a rough summer and fall for all who grew up loving their summer nights spent at Wonderland Pier in Ocean City. The pier was sold to Eustace Mita, CEO and developer of ICONA Resorts. Once summer 2024 came to an end, everyone grew worried about the future of Wonderland Pier and what it would look like going forward. People fear that their cherished memories, along with the sights and sounds of the park, will be gone for forever, never to return. The Ferris Wheel and the Carousel, I would say, are at the center of this heartbreak. These rides aren't just pieces of equipment. They represent decades of Ocean City history, offering breathtaking views of the beach and the bay. Residents are desperately trying to preserve them. There have been efforts to get these rides recognized as historic landmarks, and many hope they'll be saved in some form, even though most now accept the fact that Wonderland Pier itself will likely disappear. The new owner of the property, Eustace Mita, has made some promises about keeping the Ferris Wheel and Carousel, but many people are skeptical. Mita plans to build a new hotel on the site, and while he has said the rides would remain, there's growing concern that he may not actually follow through. Things got even more suspicious when a price sheet appeared online , listing the Ferris Wheel and Carousel for sale along with several other rides from Wonderland. If that price sheet is real, it would suggest that Mita is planning to sell off the rides, which would mean the end of two of the park's most iconic attractions. It's suspicious, though, because it lists certain rides I don't recall from the pier. Moby Dick, for example, is a ride that I know for a fact is on Morey's Piers in Wildwood. I don't recall there being one on Wonderland in Ocean City, but I could be wrong. My memory might be doing me a disservice, at the moment. Now, tensions are rising. Locals are furious, and social media is buzzing with debate over whether the price sheet is authentic or just a rumor. If it turns out to be true, Mita could face serious resistance in his efforts to tear down the park and build a hotel. The Ocean City community is united in its love for Wonderland Pier, and they aren't going to let go of it easily. If Mita does want to move forward with his plans, he will need to get the area re-zoned for a hotel, which could be a huge challenge if residents continue to push back. The fight to save the Ferris Wheel and Carousel is more than just about rides. It's about protecting the heart of a community and ensuring that the history and joy of Wonderland Pier live on for future generations. Take a look at the price sheet shared by the folks who run the "Save Wonderland" Facebook group . Comments suggest they reached out to Rides4U.com, the site reportedly listing the rides for sale, and confirmed the price sheet's legitimacy. We will neither confirm nor deny that legitimacy until we hear from them ourselves. We will be reaching out to them as well to see what we can uncover. We'll keep you updated! In the meantime, do you think this price sheet is real or fake?
