https www nice88 com NEW YORK, Nov. 21, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- A new United Nations Universit y (UNU) Hub on Remote-Sensing and Sustainable Innovations for Resilient Urban Systems (R-SIRUS) at The City College of New York was announced at a partnership agreement signing ceremony by CCNY President Vincent Boudreau and Tshilidzi Marwala , the rector of UNU and under-secretary-general of the United Nations. This Hub, in close partnership with the UNU Institute for Water, Environment and Health (UNU-INWEH), will connect CCNY to UNU's global research and educational efforts, contributing to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), international relations, and the advancement of sustainable cities. The first one of its kind in the U.S., the new UNU Hub is the first one in the world that will be focused on remote sensing and the sustainability problems of complex urban systems. It aims to enhance the adaptability of cities worldwide to climate-related challenges, fostering inclusivity and resilience in urban spaces. This Hub will leverage the university's strong legacy in science, technology, and urban innovation to serve as a global model for resilient, inclusive, equitable, and sustainable urban development. The formation of this Hub will enable active partnership between CCNY and UNU-INWEH, which is based in Toronto. "New York City is an ideal location for a hub dedicated to sustainable urban transformation. This collaboration with CCNY represents a powerful commitment to leverage science and technology to make cities more adaptable and resilient," said Marwala. "Our partnership with CCNY will not only benefit the city but will also contribute to global urban sustainability efforts through knowledge sharing and capacity building, particularly benefiting the Global South." The UNU Hub will bring together interdisciplinary experts to work on solutions addressing extreme weather impacts, urban water and energy needs, and social inequalities affecting urban communities. The UNU R-SIRUS Hub will operate with three primary pillars: Research and Development; Education and Capacity Building; and Policy and Advocacy. These pillars aim to bridge scientific innovation and policy-making, providing actionable solutions to pressing urban challenges. "Our college has always been especially sensitive to the obligation of public educational institutions to serve the public interest," said Boudreau. "Over the decades, we have made substantial investments in remote sensing climate change in water and energy systems. This partnership allows us to divest those resources in ways that will be most publicly impactful, and we're thrilled to be doing this work in partnership with UNU." As the academic arm of the United Nations with 13 institutes in 12 countries, Tokyo-based UNU addresses a range of global development challenges through joint research and education. UNU-INWEH works on major sustainability issues that deal with the most pressing water, environmental, and health problems worldwide. UNU-INWEH Director Kaveh Madani emphasized the Hub's potential for global impact. "This initiative reflects UNU's commitment to addressing sustainability challenges," he said. "By combining UNU's global perspective with CCNY's localized expertise, the R-SIRUS Hub will serve as a model for other cities around the world." "City College has unique scientific strengths in remote sensing but what makes it special is its historic contribution to making education affordable, accessible, and inclusive in the United States," he added. "We value this success and will work with our colleagues at CCNY to make knowledge accessible globally," Madani also acknowledged Canada's support of the new partnership as the host government of UNU-INWEH, recognizing the potential for this UNU Hub to act as a catalyst for sustainable solutions to climate-related challenges in urban centers. Ambassador Bob Rae , Canada's permanent representative to the United Nations in New York, and the president of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), spoke on behalf of his government at the ceremony. "A global climate crisis requires a global response and, in that global response, it's important that we link what is happening globally to what is happening locally," he said. "And I can't think of a better place to do this in the United States than in the city of New York, and there's no place to do it better than at The City College of New York." The Hub at CCNY will have three research clusters: Emerging Technologies for Earth Monitoring and Remote Sensing of Urban Systems; Climate Change Impacts on Health in Underserved Urban Communities; and Energy Innovations for Sustainable Urban Environments. It also offers CCNY students a range of joint M.S. and Ph.D. programs with UNU in addition to opportunities for short training courses, internships, and certified education programs. The Policy, Advocacy, and Outreach pillar of R-SIRUS will work closely with New York City authorities and international stakeholders to develop policies that promote equitable and sustainable urban transformation. The Hub's policy-focused activities will address environmental justice issues in underserved communities, contributing to inclusive urban planning. Led by experts from the Colin Powell School of Civic and Global Leadership, this pillar will focus on translating scientific research into actionable policies that support resilience and sustainability in urban environments globally. Dean Alexander Couzis , and NOAA Chair and Professor Reza Khanbilvardi of the Grove School of Engineering will serve as the executive co-directors of the UNU Hub at CCNY—R-SIRUS. While R-SIRUS's main office will be at the Grove School, the Division of Interdisciplinary Studies at the Center for Worker Education will house a satellite office to maximize reach to working professionals, in addition to researchers and students. While opposing defenses have keyed in on Metcalf, other aspects of Seattle's offense have surfaced during its four-game winning streak. The run has the Seahawks (8-5) sitting atop the NFC West heading into Sunday night's game against the visiting Green Bay Packers (9-4). Geno Smith's new top target is second-year receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba, who needs 89 receiving yards for his first career 1,000-yard season. Smith-Njigba has 75 catches for 911 yards and five touchdowns, while Metcalf, often dealing with double coverage, has 54 catches for 812 yards and two scores. Metcalf says he feels the pride of a “proud parent or a big brother” when it comes to Smith-Njigba's success. Seattle's offense also got a boost from the ground game in a 30-18 victory over the Arizona Cardinals last weekend . Zach Charbonnet, filling in for the injured Kenneth Walker III, ran for a career-best 134 yards and two touchdowns. The Seahawks face another hot team in the Packers (9-4), who have won seven of nine. Green Bay's two losses over that stretch have come against NFC-best Detroit (12-1), including a 34-31 victory by the Lions on Dec. 5, which means the NFC North title is likely out of reach for the Packers. The Packers are well-positioned for a playoff berth, but that almost certainly won't come this weekend. They would need a win, a loss or tie by the Atlanta Falcons and a tie between the Los Angeles Rams and San Francisco 49ers. Metcalf, who learned to block from his father, former Chicago Bears offensive lineman Terrence Metcalf, says he tries to take blocking seriously to set himself apart from other receivers. His priorities are simple when he's getting double-teamed and the ball goes elsewhere. “Trying to block my (butt) off and trying to get pancakes on defensive backs,” he said. Love heats up When the Packers surged their way into the playoffs last season, quarterback Jordan Love was a major reason why. He had 18 touchdown passes and one interception during Green Bay's final eight games. During the last four games of this season, Love ranks third in the NFL with a 118.9 passer rating with six touchdowns, one interception and a league-best 10.3 yards per attempt. “I always feel like I can put the ball where I want to — and that’s part of it, too, having that confidence to be able to throw those passes,” Love said. “There’s always like I said a handful of plays that might not come off or be in the exact spot that you wanted it to or the throw might be a little bit off. So, that’s where you’ve just got to try to be at your best every play, be consistent and accurate as possible.” Passing fancy Green Bay’s pass defense has been picked apart the last two weeks. First, it was torched by Tua Tagovailoa and the Dolphins in a Packers win. Next, it allowed Jared Goff to complete his final 13 passes as the Lions rallied to victory. It won’t get any easier this week. Smith is second in the NFL in attempts, completions and passing yards and is fifth in completion percentage. “It’s been a remarkable turnaround for him in terms of just where he started,” Packers coach Matt LaFleur said. “It’s not always where you start, but where you finish. And it tells me a lot about the person in terms of his resiliency and ability to fight through some adversity. He’s a dangerous quarterback.” The potential return of former All-Pro cornerback Jaire Alexander (knee) could help the Packers. Fashion forward Will the Packers break out their head-to-toe white uniforms? The last time Green Bay wore the winter white look was in a 24-22 win over Houston in October. The Packers asked fans to weigh in on social media . As for the Seahawks, they'll be sporting their “Action Green” uniforms. Metcalf is a fan. “I would say this about the Action Green, I love them personally in my opinion, but the big guys hate them. I don’t know why, don’t ask me," he said. “Hopefully, the Packers wear all white, so it’ll be a fun-looking game.” AP NFL: https://apnews.com/hub/nflALTOONA, Pa. — The man accused of killing UnitedHealthcare’s CEO struggled with deputies and shouted while being led into court Tuesday as new details emerged about his possible motivation behind the ambush. In his first public words since a five-day search ended with his arrest at a McDonald’s in Pennsylvania, Luigi Nicholas Mangione emerged from a patrol car shouting about an “insult to the intelligence of the American people” while deputies pushed him inside a courthouse. The 26-year-old Ivy League graduate from a prominent Maryland real estate family is fighting attempts to extradite him to New York so that he can face a murder charge in the Manhattan killing of Brian Thompson, who led the United States’ largest medical insurance company. Related Story: Mangione Carrying Handwritten Document Expressing Anger A law enforcement bulletin obtained by The Associated Press said that at the time of his arrest, Mangione was carrying a handwritten document expressing anger with what he called “parasitic” health insurance companies and a disdain for corporate greed and power. He wrote that the U.S. has the most expensive health care system in the world and that profits of major corporations continue to rise while “our life expectancy” does not, according to the bulletin. In social media posts, Mangione called “Unabomber” Ted Kaczynski — who carried out a series of bombings while railing against modern society and technology — a “political revolutionary,” according to the police bulletin. Mangione remained jailed in Pennsylvania, where he was initially charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm, forgery and providing false identification to police. Manhattan prosecutors were beginning to take steps to bring Mangione to New York, but at a brief hearing Tuesday, defense lawyer Thomas Dickey said his client will not waive extradition and instead wants a hearing on the issue. Mangione was denied bail after prosecutors said he was too dangerous to be released. Related Story: He mostly stared straight ahead at the hearing, occasionally looking at papers, rocking in his chair or looking back at the gallery. At one point, he began to speak to respond to the court discussion but was quieted by his lawyer. “You can’t rush to judgment in this case or any case,” Dickey said afterward. “He’s presumed innocent. Let’s not forget that.” Mangione was arrested in Altoona, Pennsylvania, about 230 miles (about 370 kilometers) west of New York City, after a McDonald’s customer recognized him and notified an employee, authorities said. Images of Mangione released Tuesday by Pennsylvania State Police showed him pulling down his mask in the corner of the McDonald’s while holding what appeared to be hash browns and wearing a winter jacket and beanie. In another photo from a holding cell, he stood unsmiling with rumpled hair. Mangione Carrying Gun, Fake ID New York police officials have said Mangione was carrying a gun like the one used to kill Thompson and the same fake ID the shooter had used to check into a New York hostel, along with a passport and other fraudulent IDs. A law enforcement official who wasn’t authorized to discuss the investigation publicly and spoke with The Associated Press on condition of anonymity said a three-page, handwritten document found with Mangione included a line in which he claimed to have acted alone. “To the Feds, I’ll keep this short, because I do respect what you do for our country. To save you a lengthy investigation, I state plainly that I wasn’t working with anyone,” the document said, according to the official. It also said, “I do apologize for any strife or traumas but it had to be done. Frankly, these parasites simply had it coming.” Thompson, 50, was killed last Wednesday as he walked alone to a Manhattan hotel for an investor conference. From surveillance video, New York investigators determined the shooter quickly fled the city, likely by bus. Related Story: Mangione was born into a life of country clubs and privilege. His grandfather was a self-made real estate developer and philanthropist. Valedictorian at his elite Baltimore prep school, he went on to earn undergraduate and graduate degrees in computer science in 2020 from the University of Pennsylvania, a spokesperson said. “Our family is shocked and devastated by Luigi’s arrest,” Mangione’s family said in a statement posted on social media late Monday by his cousin, Maryland Del. Nino Mangione. “We offer our prayers to the family of Brian Thompson and we ask people to pray for all involved.” From January to June 2022, Luigi Mangione lived at Surfbreak, a “co-living” space at the edge of touristy Waikiki in Honolulu. Like other residents of the shared penthouse catering to remote workers, Mangione underwent a background check, said Josiah Ryan, a spokesperson for owner and founder R.J. Martin. “Luigi was just widely considered to be a great guy. There were no complaints,” Ryan said. “There was no sign that might point to these alleged crimes they’re saying he committed.” At Surfbreak, Martin learned Mangione had severe back pain from childhood that interfered with many aspects of his life, from surfing to romance, Ryan said. Mangione left Surfbreak to get surgery on the mainland, Ryan said, then later returned to Honolulu and rented an apartment. Martin stopped hearing from Mangione six months to a year ago.The Mahayuti alliance, despite their poor performance in the Lok Sabha polls, executed a strategic comeback in north Maharashtra assembly elections, capturing 44 of 47 seats. Their success was bolstered by Prime Minister Modi's slogan, key developmental initiatives, and targeted support for farmers. The completion of the Nilwande dam and new river linking projects played crucial roles in garnering greater support in Nashik, Dhule, and nearby districts. Adapting policy measures to aid onion farmers also paid off, especially in Nashik and Ahilyanagar, according to BJP sources. In efforts to rejuvenate grassroots connections, key Mahayuti leaders such as Girish Mahajan and Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil engaged closely with local units. Strategic policy changes, including adjustments in onion export pricing, further solidified farmer support, resulting in a sweeping victory for the alliance. (With inputs from agencies.)

A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun State, Toyin Amuzu, has called for the immediate release of Gaffar Asaolu, political aide to Oladipupo Adebutu, the party’s governorship candidate in the 2023 general elections. The Ogun State Police Command arrested Asaolu over allegations of involvement in violence during last Saturday’s local government elections. In a statement issued on Sunday in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, Amuzu condemned what he described as the “arbitrary arrest and detention” of Asaolu, demanding his unconditional release. “The continuous detention of the Director of Finance of the Atiku-Okowa Campaign Committee in the 2023 general elections, on trumped-up charges, is unfair and unjust,” Amuzu stated. The PDP chieftain accused Governor Dapo Abiodun of orchestrating Asaolu’s arrest, describing it as a political witch-hunt aimed at silencing opposition voices. He urged the governor to prioritize addressing the state’s growing security concerns rather than targeting members of the opposition party. “Governor Abiodun should focus on the pressing security challenges in Ogun State instead of engaging in the political victimization of PDP members. The alleged killer squad tag and unfair treatment of Asaolu are unjustifiable,” Amuzu said. Amuzu also referenced Adebutu’s own run-ins with law enforcement, noting that the governorship candidate had been arrested twice by the Department of State Services (DSS) and the police. He suggested that Asaolu’s detention is connected to his association with Adebutu. He said that Adebutu was later released when no evidence was found against him, while Asaolu remains in detention, pointing out that “this is a clear case of political persecution and an affront to democracy” “The government should focus on addressing the real security challenges facing our state, which include ritual killings, cult clashes and killings, robbery, kidnapping, and political violence especially from the ruling party rather than harassing innocent citizens,” Amuzu added in the statement. . He, therefore, called on the state government to respect the Rule of Law and ensure that all citizens are treated fairly and justly. “The illegal arrest and detention of citizens without sufficient evidence is a clear violation of their fundamental human rights. The people of Ogun State deserve better, and it’s time for the government to take action to address the growing security concerns and put an end to political witch-hunts”, the 2023 House of Representatives PDP candidate submitted.NBA star LeBron James announced Thursday that he’s decided to take some time off from social media. The reason? Too much “negativity.” James reposted a message from Rich Kleiman — an entrepreneur known for being fellow NBA player Kevin Durant’s agent — that spoke about, “so much hate and negativity in the world today” asserting that, “We can all acknowledge that is the last part of society that universally brings people together.” AMEN!! 🫡 — LeBron James (@KingJames) Shortly after his repost, James made the following post indicating it was time to step away. And with that said I’ll holla at y’all! Getting off social media for the time being. Y’all take care ✌🏾👑 — LeBron James (@KingJames) This would be all well and good for a four-time champion if he truly considered professional sports to be an escape that brings Americans together while using his platform to spread positivity. However, James has spent the past election cycle doing just the opposite. On Halloween, James posted a deceptively edited video — basically propaganda — with soundbites of President-elect , making him seem like a raging lunatic racist one would find in the Civil Rights Era among names like former Alabama Gov. George Wallace. James added the caption to the video, “What are we even talking about here?? When I think about my kids and my family and how they will grow up, the choice is clear to me.” He ended his message with a desperate plea to his followers. “VOTE KAMALA HARRIS!!!” What are we even talking about here?? When I think about my kids and my family and how they will grow up, the choice is clear to me. VOTE KAMALA HARRIS!!! — LeBron James (@KingJames) This video the embodiment of the negativity James is complaining about. How could James be so incredibly oblivious to the on display here? TPUSA contributor Jon Root replied to James’s reposting of Kleiman’s message, reminding him how responsible he was for the atmosphere he now complains about. Bro... You called Trump and his supporters (more than half the country), segregationist racists, KKK members and Nazis when you endorsed Kamala Harris. You are perpetuating the divisiveness and hate that is tearing this country apart. Maybe look at yourself in the mirror,... — Jon Root (@JonnyRoot_) Root appropriately told James he was “perpetuating the divisiveness and hate that is tearing apart.” Well said. If James truly wanted to bring the country together, he would stop posting propaganda, stop attacking , and do one of the hardest things in the world — admit he was wrong. Running away from the problem that you created while saying it’s someone else’s fault isn’t going to help your case. James doesn’t appear to be done with X. Maybe after his break, he can come back with a new mindset and actually be part of the solution. We are committed to truth and accuracy in all of our journalism. NoneMumbai: The Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (MSBSHSE) has released the exam schedules for Maharashtra's Class 10 and 12 board exams in 2025. The Class 10 exams are slated to commence on February 21 and conclude on March 17, 2025. Similarly, the Class 12 board exams will be held from February 11 to March 11, 2025. Both the exams will be held in two shifts: first shift from 11 am to 2 pm and second shift from 3 pm to 6 pm. The number of students registered for the Maharashtra HSC exams (12th board) stands at 15,13,909, of them 7,60,046 are registered in science stream, 3,81,982 in arts, and the remaining 3,29,905 in commerce. For class 10 (SSC exams), the exams will start with the first language (Marathi, Hindi, Urdu, Gujarati, etc.) paper in the first shift and the second language (German and French) paper in the second shift on February 21. While Maths part-1 will be held on March 5, it’ll be followed by Maths part-2 on March 7. Science and Technology part-1 and part-2 papers will be held on March 10 and March 12 respectively, and the exams will culminate with Social Science paper-1 and paper-2 on March 15 and March 17 respectively. Some experts have welcomed the move of scheduling the exams “10 days ahead of the previous years”. “Since exams will begin 10 days in advance, naturally the results will also be declared 10 days prior to the previous years. So, those students who may fail in one or two or three subjects, they will get 10 extra days to prepare for the supplementary exams,” Mahendra Ganpule, the former president of the state’s headmasters association, told the Free Press Journal. It is worth noting that the revised State Curriculum Framework for School Education (SCF-SE) had in October proposed that even if students fail in class 10 Maths and Science papers, and they score between 20-33 (34 being the passing marks), can still take admissions in class 11 in streams that do not have these subjects in Class XI as part of the curriculum.

I was wrong and apologize to this group of (Sierra) 55.” In his social media post, Erwin thanked Sierra 55 for “assisting” the residents of Washington County. During a Unicoi County Commission meeting on Monday night, Erwin said a team “came into Unicoi County saying that they were the search and rescue team.” Erwin identified the group as “Strategical Rescue 55,” referring to Sierra 55. He said the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation was investigating the group after Washington County filed a complaint against them. He also said Mitchell and Yancey Counties in North Carolina “ran them out of their two counties” for trying to solicit money and not following orders. However, the TBI said Tuesday they have not received a request to investigate any group that has been active in the Tri-Cities area for fraud or scamming residents in relation to Hurricane Helene relief efforts. TBI Public Information Officer Leslie Earhart said that, in order for the TBI to open an investigation, a request would have to be sent to them by the district attorney general. “At this time, we’ve received no such request,” said Earhart. Erwin said he meant to relay that he told the TBI of the group and that groups similar to the one he finds suspicious have been expelled from counties in North Carolina.

Chris Cenac Jr., the top center in the Class of 2025 according to the ESPN100, has committed to play for the Houston Cougars. The five-star recruit announced his decision Tuesday via the Bleacher Report's B/R App. Cenac previously said he wouldn't make his decision until the spring, but his stock soared over the summer after his impressive play on the Puma Pro 16 circuit with Dallas-based YGC, vaulting him into the national top-10 rankings. The 6-foot-10 New Orleans native was reportedly choosing between LSU, Auburn, Arkansas, Baylor, Kentucky, Tennessee and others before making the decision to join Cougars coach Kelvin Sampson's team. "I just like the coaching staff a lot, I like their plan to develop me and I like coming into a winning program," Cenac told 247Sports. "I'm looking forward to producing and just helping them win more. But the main thing was development and them being able to get me better so I can be ready for that next level." Cenac's rating of .9978 by 247Sports Composite makes him the Cougars' highest-rated commit in the modern era, according to multiple outlets. "They see me as a four who can kind of play all over the court and do everything," Cenac told 247Sports. "I can get rebounds, push the ball, shoot and play all over the floor." With Cenac joining other Houston commits like five-star shooting guard Isaiah Harwell, four-star point guard Kingston Flemings and three-star wing Bryce Jackson, Houston's Class of 2025 is ranked No. 2 in the nation by 247Sports and ESPN. --Field Level Media

Vikings withstand Bears' furious rally, win on field goal in OT

Seattle Seahawks receiver is DK Metcalf is just fine when he doesn't have the the ball because it means he gets to showcase his blocking skills. “I just look at it as a sign of respect that I’ve gained from other defensive coordinators and just continue to do my job with it as blocking or being a decoy,” the two-time Pro Bowler said. When the Packers surged their way into the playoffs last season, quarterback Jordan Love was a major reason why. So, that’s where you’ve just got to try to be at your best every play, be consistent and accurate as possible.” Green Bay’s pass defense has been picked apart the last two weeks. Will the Packers break out their head-to-toe white uniforms? The last time Green Bay wore the winter white look was in a 24-22 win over Houston in October. The Packers asked fans to weigh in on social media . As for the Seahawks, they'll be sporting their “Action Green” uniforms. Metcalf is a fan. “I would say this about the Action Green, I love them personally in my opinion, but the big guys hate them. I don’t know why, don’t ask me," he said. “Hopefully, the Packers wear all white, so it’ll be a fun-looking game.” AP NFL: https://apnews.com/hub/nfl
