A year ago, when the Professional Women's Hockey League was preparing to launch its inaugural season, few knew what to expect. Women's hockey leagues have come and gone over the years, and Jayna Hefford knows that better than most. She played in a few of those leagues over a Hall of Fame career, and served as commissioner of the Canadian Women's Hockey League when it folded more than five years ago. But when the six-team PWHL launched in January, the public reception of the new league exceeded expectations. It showed through merchandise sales, which the league significantly underestimated, to attendance, including a record-breaking crowd of more than 21,000 that sold out the Bell Centre in Montreal in just minutes. "We always believed it to be true," said Hefford, who is the PWHL's senior vice president of hockey operations. "We had a vision for it. But to see it happen as quickly as it did was something that was pretty special." WATCH | Early predictions for the 2nd PWHL season on Hockey North: Way too early PWHL season predictions 3 hours ago Duration 6:43 Host Anastasia Bucsis is joined by PWHL insider Karissa Donkin as they give their early predictions ahead of the 2nd PWHL seasons. The challenge going into season two isn't just to sustain that momentum, but to keep growing. The league will be playing in bigger venues over an expanded season that will see each team play 30 games. There will be more games in NHL arenas, including stops in neutral sites across North America as part of the "PWHL Takeover Tour." THE BUZZER What to know for the PWHL's second season All of that means more tickets to sell, as the league balances meeting demand with not doing too much too fast. While attendance was strong in Canadian markets last season, the league still needs to work on building a steady fan base in American markets like New York. The Sirens will call New Jersey's Prudential Center its primary home this season, after splitting time between three arenas in three states last season. A PWHL game between the Montreal Victoire and Toronto Sceptres drew a record crowd of 21,105 at Montreal's Bell Centre earlier this year. (Graham Hughes/The Canadian Press) The PWHL regular-season will kick off on Saturday with the Toronto Sceptres hosting the Boston Fleet at 2 p.m. ET at Coca-Cola Coliseum. The game will be streamed on CBCSports.ca, CBC Gem, and CBC Sports App. It's the first of 17 Saturday games that will be broadcast by CBC this season . Here are five new things to watch in the PWHL's second season: New branding Each team is going into the season with a clearer identity after the league unveiled names, logos and new Bauer jerseys over the off-season. While jerseys for some teams were sold out online through much of last season, the league is working to make sure the new jerseys stay in stock. When it comes to accessibility and marketing, the league has shifted how it will make games available to fans in Canada for the second season. All 90 regular-season games will be broadcast between CBC, TSN and Amazon Prime. All six PWHL teams have new names, logos and jerseys to begin the 2nd season. (Photo courtesy Bauer/PWHL) The difference this season is you won't find them streaming for free on YouTube in Canada. YouTube will still carry games in the United States and internationally. "It's a really hard decision to make because accessibility is really important for us," Amy Scheer, the PWHL's senior vice president of business operations, said. "But you hope on the flip side that the fans understand that this is really a very important next step for the sustainability and growth of our league." Bigger venues After selling out every home game before the puck dropped on last season, the Toronto Sceptres will play their home games at the larger Coca-Cola Coliseum. The rink seats around 8,000 fans, much bigger than last year's home at Mattamy Athletic Centre, where fewer than 3,000 fans could attend. Montreal will also call Place Bell its primary home, after playing several games in the smaller-but-homier Verdun Auditorium last time around. With new season on the horizon, PWHL evaluating more than 25 expansion proposals From linemates to lifemates, PWHL stars Poulin and Stacey navigate marriage and career While the league was under fire to sign agreements with venues late in the year in the first season, this off-season gave the league a bit more breathing room to find the right locations. Something around 10,000 seats would seem to be the sweet spot for the league at this stage. Fresh faces The New York Sirens made Sarah Fillier the first-overall pick in the draft earlier this year, and she wasted no time making an impression in preseason by scoring a hat trick against the Toronto Sceptres. Sirens' new home, addition of Sarah Fillier has PWHL club's trajectory pointing up Fillier, 24, has been a mainstay on the Canadian national team for several years, and is likely to be a star in the PWHL for many years to come. She'll be coached by Greg Fargo, who was hired to replace Howie Draper behind New York's bench over the off-season. Fillier gives Fargo a few options. She can play down the middle or on the wing, where she could be paired with another offensive threat in Alex Carpenter — a scary thought for opposing teams. New York Sirens rookie forward Sarah Fillier recorded a hat trick during a pre-season game against the Toronto Sceptres. (PWHL) Other newcomers to watch include Ottawa's Danielle Serdachny, who will add some size and skill to the Charge's top six, and Boston forward Hannah Bilka, whose speed and hockey sense made her the fourth-overall pick earlier this year. "We expect [Serdachny] to be an impact player for us right away," Ottawa captain Brianne Jenner said. "She has an amazing skillset, but I think what makes her so elite is just the way she thinks the game." Rule changes The PWHL experimented with new rules and formats in season one, including the "jailbreak" rule that sees a player freed from the penalty box when their team scores shorthanded. The "jailbreak" rule is back again this season, but the league has also introduced the "no escape" rule, which restricts the penalized team from changing lines after a penalty is called. Players can't switch out until the first faceoff after the penalty, all in a bid to give an extra advantage to the team on the power play. An attempt to jump-start scoring: A deeper look at the PWHL's new 'no escape' rule A burning question for each PWHL team ahead of the league's sophomore campaign "You want to make it entertaining for fans and increase scoring," Hefford told CBC Sports. The team has tried to add more clarity around bodychecking this season, too. The league is still welcoming physical play, particularly along the boards, but wants to crack down on any head contact this season. An illegal hit to the head will automatically result in a major penalty and game misconduct, and will result in a review with the league's central situation room. Defending a title For the first time, a team will begin the season as reigning Walter Cup champions. The Minnesota Frost will look to reclaim the crown after defeating the Boston Fleet in five games last spring. Every team will have the defending champs, led by Ilana Kloss playoff MVP, Taylor Heise, on their radar. The Minnesota Frost go into the league's second season as reigning Walter Cup champions, led by Taylor Heise, seen above, and playoff MVP-award winner Ilana Kloss. (Troy Parla/Getty Images/File) "We have a spot on our back," Heise told the Associated Press earlier this month. "Everyone's going to look at us a specific way." Meanwhile, the Boston Fleet had to sit with the feeling of coming so close all summer long. It's left Boston defender Megan Keller with a chip on her shoulder heading into the second season. PWHL rookie Claire Thompson trades stethoscope for hockey stick to resume career "Those losses, personally, always stick with me," Keller said. "It's something to fall back on when you get in those big moments again, whether that be fuel for winning a game or just using it as an experience overall in learning lessons."None
Millions of seniors in the US will have to pay much more for Medicare starting January 1, 2025 – Everything is official
By Patricia Zengerle WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Two of President-elect Donald Trump's most controversial nominees, Pete Hegseth and Tulsi Gabbard, sought support from U.S. senators on Monday, but it remained uncertain whether they would get the near-unanimous Republican backing they will need to win confirmation. Former Fox News personality Hegseth held a second meeting with Senator Joni Ernst, a combat veteran and sexual assault survivor seen as a key to the decorated Army National Guard veteran's hopes for becoming secretary of Defense. Ernst's statement afterward seemed to open the door to voting for Hegseth. She said the nominee had committed to completing a Pentagon audit and selecting an official who would address the issue of sexual assault within the ranks. "As I support Pete through this process, I look forward to a fair hearing based on truth, not anonymous sources," Ernst said. Hegseth faces concerns about allegations of misconduct in his professional and personal life, including accusations of sexual assault, which he denies. Several of his supporters have called for his accusers to come forward publicly. Trump has kept his support strongly behind Hegseth, predicting he will be confirmed. Hegseth told reporters the meeting with Ernst had gone well, saying, "The more we talk, the more we are reminded that we are two combat veterans and we are dedicated to defense." Trump's fellow Republicans will hold only a slim 53-47 Senate majority next year, meaning nominees can afford just three Republican no's and still be confirmed, if Democrats unite against them. Former Representative Gabbard, Trump's choice for director of national intelligence, arrived for Senate meetings as the abrupt fall on Sunday of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad prompted renewed scrutiny of her 2017 visit to Damascus. Gabbard, a former Democrat who lacks significant intelligence experience, is also seen as soft on Russia, although her supporters say she has a healthy skepticism about foreign U.S. military involvement, in keeping with the America First policies of Trump, whom she endorsed this year. Her selection to be director of national intelligence in November sent shock waves through the national security establishment, adding to concerns that the intelligence community would become increasingly political. Gabbard did not respond on Monday when reporters at the Capitol asked her to respond to events in Syria. (Reporting by Patricia Zengerle; editing by Jonathan Oatis)(The Conversation is an independent and nonprofit source of news, analysis and commentary from academic experts.) Maximilian Brichta , University of Southern California (THE CONVERSATION) Rockets aren’t the only thing Elon Musk is sending into the stratosphere. After a three-year plummet, Dogecoin is blasting off again , jumping 250% since the election of Donald Trump – part of a broader wave of optimism in the industry , due to Trump’s courting of crypto advocates during his campaign. Trump’s informal appointment of Musk to what he calls the Department of Government Efficiency – D.O.G.E for short – also helped pump the dog-themed meme coin . This isn’t the first time Musk, who styles himself as “ the Dogefather ,” has fueled interest in Dogecoin. In May 2021, its price shot up in anticipation of Musk’s guest appearance on “Saturday Night Live.” During one skit, Musk played a financial analyst in conversation with a Weekend Update host, who repeatedly asked him, “What is Dogecoin?” After some obfuscation, Musk’s character finally admitted that it was a hustle. The price of the coin went into a freefall . Just over a year later, it had shed over 90% of its peak value . The losses hit small investors hard. In 2022, one of them filed a class action lawsuit against Musk for market manipulation and insider trading, though the case was dismissed in August 2024. Why has Dogecoin – a meme coin that was never meant to be taken seriously as an investment – seen such extreme swings in value? We’re all in this together Dogecoin was launched in 2013 to spoof bitcoin and a slew of other cryptocurrencies that were claiming to disrupt the traditional world of finance. Two strangers from across the globe met online , copied the code of an existing coin, and branded it with the already popular Doge internet meme – a picture of a Shiba Inu dog surrounded by fragments of broken English: “wow much coin.” Although their main goal was to make the coin pointless and undesirable, it became one of the most popular and enduring cryptocurrencies on the market. Following Dogecoin’s previous surge in 2021, I studied how its fervent network of influencers and everyday investors worked together to draw tremendous attention – and capital – to the joke currency. To understand the appeal of these absurd investments, you have to look at the time and energy that users invest into these networks and the rewards, both financial and social, they get in return. Meme coins are collaborative enterprises. Members of these online communities have an economic incentive to become outspoken boosters: The more the value of Dogecoin rises, the more their investments grow. But they also receive social validation from other meme coin investors when they pump up the coin. In other words, behind every meme coin is a collective of strangers on a communal mission to make more money. Dogecoin and its imitators have been described by their leadership as crypto movements , shared journeys and community-owned projects. Beyond branding the assets with culturally resonant images, whether it’s a Shiba Inu dog or Pepe the Frog , successful crypto ventures are characterized by complex webs of trust. Trust in the technology. Trust in its potential for future appreciation. And trust that those holding power in the networks won’t exploit the rest. This loyalty is woven among a global network of users who collaborate around the clock to promote their coin and demonstrate their unwavering commitment to its success. In times of price appreciation, the collective buzzes with elation . During price dips, community members mutually reinforce their comrades’ – and their own – beliefs that this is just a bump in the road and that their collective efforts will eventually lead to a handsome payoff. Even in the coldest of crypto winters , this ritualistic behavior helps these speculative communities endure. Community serves as a substitute for financial loss. The investment strategies in these communities – and the conviction in their payoff – involve repeating and reposting what others have said, like any traditional internet meme. Trolling traditional valuation The real value of meme coins cannot be understood in the same way as traditional assets, such as stocks and physical commodities. These types of assets have fundamentals, such as a company’s financial statements, or public demand for basic goods, from coffee to oil. Conversely, the fundamentals of meme coins are reflected in their network activity, such as daily active users, and less concrete metrics, such as social sentiment and mindshare – how much public awareness a coin has generated compared with its rivals. Of course, the valuations of traditional assets are also affected by these social factors. The difference is that meme coins offer little by way of productive activity. They add nothing to the economy. Occasionally, their leadership will build financial services around them , but these are generally added as afterthoughts, especially as a way to drum up more speculative excitement. Meme coins troll the traditional conventions of valuation and mock the edicts and dogmas of mainstream investors. And that’s exactly the point. Participation in meme coin communities – or any crypto community, for that matter – entails embracing an alternative economic experience. They are speculative sandboxes for playing outside of the conventional rules of investment. Who let the Doge out? Musk is the quintessential meme coin influencer. As the richest man in the world, he’s viewed by many as a paragon of savvy investing. His massive following extends far beyond Dogecoin’s social network. And his promotional efforts are playful – so playful that the judge in his class-action case dismissed his Dogecoin tweets as mere “puffery” and that “no reasonable investor could rely upon them.” Dogecoin previously reached the peak of its memetic momentum when Musk appeared on “Saturday Night Live.” Now, instead of sitting at the Weekend Update news desk cracking jokes, he’s sitting in Trump’s office advising the president-elect. In other words, Dogecoin’s memetic resonance has ascended from pop culture to politics, helping it capture a bigger slice of the public’s mindshare. While Dogecoin has specifically benefited from Musk’s proximity to Trump, the broader crypto market is leaping with optimism for a crypto-friendly administration. Speaking at the Bitcoin 2024 conference in July, the GOP candidate ensured he’d make the United States “ the crypto capital of the planet .” After pouring $131 million into this election cycle , the crypto industry can now claim 274 pro-crypto members of the U.S. House of Representatives and 20 pro-crypto U.S. senators. Between Musk buddying up with Trump and a shifting regulatory environment, the dog can once again run free. This article is republished from The Conversation under a Creative Commons license. Strictly fans ‘breathe a huge sigh of relief’ as latest eliminated contestant announcedUS budget airlines are struggling. Will pursuing premium passengers solve their problems? DALLAS (AP) — Delta and United Airlines have become the most profitable U.S. airlines by targeting premium customers while also winning a significant share of budget travelers. That is squeezing smaller low-fare carriers like Spirit Airlines, which filed for bankruptcy protection on Monday. Some travel industry experts think Spirit’s troubles indicate less-wealthy passengers will have fewer choices and higher prices. Other discount airlines are on better financial footing but also are lagging far behind the full-service airlines when it comes to recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic. Most industry experts think Frontier and other so-called ultra-low-cost carriers will fill the vacuum if Spirit shrinks, and that there's still plenty of competition to prevent prices from spiking. Bitcoin ticks closer to $100,000 in extended surge following US elections NEW YORK (AP) — Bitcoin is jumping again, setting another new high above $99,000 overnight. The cryptocurrency has been shattering records almost daily since the U.S. presidential election, and has rocketed more than 40% higher in just two weeks. It's now at the doorstep of $100,000. Cryptocurrencies and related investments like crypto exchange-traded funds have rallied because the incoming Trump administration is expected to be more “crypto-friendly.” Still, as with everything in the volatile cryptoverse, the future is hard to predict. And while some are bullish, other experts continue to warn of investment risks. Stock market today: Wall Street gains ground as it heads for a winning week Stocks gained ground on Wall Street, keeping the market on track for its fifth gain in a row. The S&P 500 was up 0.2% in afternoon trading Friday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average climbed 333 points and the Nasdaq composite was essentially flat. Retailers had some of the biggest gains. Gap soared after reporting quarterly results that easily beat analysts' estimates. EchoStar fell after DirecTV called of its purchase of that company's Dish Network unit. European markets closed mostly higher and Asian markets ended mixed. Treasury yields held relatively steady in the bond market. Crude oil prices gained ground. Australia rejects Elon Musk's claim that it plans to control access to the internet MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — An Australian Cabinet minister has rejected X Corp. owner Elon Musk’s allegation that the government intends to control all Australians' access to the internet through legislation that would ban young children from social media. Treasurer Jim Chalmers said on Friday that Musk’s criticism was “unsurprising” after the government introduced legislation to Parliament that would fine platforms including X up to $133 million for allowing children under 16 to hold social media accounts. The spat continues months of open hostility between the Australian government and the tech billionaire over regulators’ efforts to reduce public harm from social media. Parliament could pass the legislation as soon as next week. Oil company Phillips 66 faces federal charges related to alleged Clean Water Act violations LOS ANGELES (AP) — Oil company Phillips 66 has been federally indicted in connection with alleged violations of the Clean Water Act in California. The Texas-based company is accused of discharging hundreds of thousands of gallons of industrial wastewater containing excessive amounts of oil and grease. The U.S. Department of Justice announced the indictment on Thursday. Phillips is charged with two counts of negligently violating the Clean Water Act and four counts of knowingly violating the Clean Water Act. An arraignment date has not been set. A spokesperson for the company said it was cooperating with prosecutors. US regulators seek to break up Google, forcing Chrome sale as part of monopoly punishment U.S. regulators want a federal judge to break up Google to prevent the company from continuing to squash competition through its dominant search engine after a court found it had maintained an abusive monopoly over the past decade. The proposed breakup floated in a 23-page document filed late Wednesday by the U.S. Justice Department calls for Google to sell its industry-leading Chrome web browser and impose restrictions designed to prevent Android from favoring its search engine. Regulators also want to ban Google from forging multibillion-dollar deals to lock in its dominant search engine as the default option on Apple’s iPhone and other devices. What you need to know about the proposed measures designed to curb Google's search monopoly U.S. regulators are proposing aggressive measures to restore competition to the online search market after a federal judge ruled that Google maintained an illegal monopoly. The sweeping set of recommendations filed late Wednesday could radically alter Google’s business. Regulators want Google to sell off its industry-leading Chrome web browser. They outlined a range of behavioral measures such as prohibiting Google from using search results to favor its own services such as YouTube, and forcing it to license search index data to its rivals. They're not going as far as to demand Google spin off Android, but are leaving that door open if the remedies don't work. Apple and Google face UK investigation into mobile browser dominance LONDON (AP) — A British watchdog says Apple and Google aren't giving consumers a genuine choice of mobile web browsers. The watchdog's report Friday recommends they face an investigation under new U.K. digital rules taking effect next year. The Competition and Markets Authority took aim at Apple, saying the iPhone maker’s tactics hold back innovation by stopping rivals from giving users new features like faster webpage loading. The CMA’s report also found that Apple and Google manipulate the choices given to mobile phone users to make their own browsers “the clearest or easiest option.” Apple said it disagreed with the findings. Atlantic City casino earnings fall nearly 14% in 3rd quarter ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) — Atlantic City’s casinos saw their operating profits decline by nearly 14% in the third quarter of this year. New Jersey gambling regulators say the nine casinos had a collective gross operating profit of $236.5 million in the third quarter. That was down 13.8% from the third quarter of 2023. Every casino was profitable, but only two — Caesars and Hard Rock — saw their profits increase in the third quarter compared with a year ago. Hard Rock had the highest average hotel occupancy at over 95%, and Ocean had the highest average hotel room price at $335. German auto supplier Bosch to cut 5,500 jobs in further sign of carmakers' woes FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) — Germany's technology and services company Bosch is cutting its automotive division workforce by as many as 5,500 jobs in the next several years, in another sign of the headwinds hitting the German and global auto industries. The company cited stagnating global auto sales, too much factory capacity in the auto industry compared to sales prospects and a slower than expected transition to electric-powered, software-controlled vehicles. Some 3,500 of the job reductions would come before the end of 2027 and would hit the part of the company that develops driver assistance and automated driving technologies. About half those job reductions would be at locations in Germany.Taconic Hills beat Germantown 41-36 in Patroon Conference action. Tristan Super scored 11 to lead a balanced Taconic Hills attack. First Horizon Names New Head of Investor RelationsDonald Trump's release of a new fragrance line is reviving familiar questions about financial conflicts of interests, and generating new ones about the legality of using Jill Biden's image to promote the products. Trump announced a new line of perfumes and colognes on Sunday with a social media post that links to a website where it says some of the products have already "sold out" and others can still be purchased for $199 a bottle, or two for $298. The social media promotion includes a picture of the president-elect talking to the first lady on Saturday during the reopening of the Notre-Dame cathedral in Paris. The photo caption reads: “A fragrance your enemies can’t resist.” During his first White House term, Trump regularly faced ethics questions about using the federal government he led for his own personal gain, including using his properties for both official and unofficial events . The issue was a defining and recurring theme throughout his first administration. As he prepares for a second term, Trump still controls vast business interests and is launching new ones , and ethics experts say that using Jill Biden's image shows how the president-elect continues to push boundaries as he prepares to take office. Others who have been tapped to serve in his next administration also are still pitching products, including Robert F. Kennedy Jr. , the nominee to lead the Department of Health and Human Services, who recently appeared in an online video promoting his wife's beauty line. "I think this is a problem," said Richard Painter, who worked as an ethics lawyer in former President George W. Bush's White House. "But there's no way to stop the president from selling guitars and Bibles and perfume. There's no way to stop it, even though I think it's use of public office for private gain." Trump's use of Biden's picture in promoting his fragrance line adds a new twist to the ethics questions surrounding his business interests. Most states prohibit an individual’s name, image, or likeness from being used for commercial purposes without approval under so-called "right of publicity" laws, according to legal experts. If someone’s image is used to sell a product without approval, they can sue for compensation. But before that happens the White House likely would first send a cease and desist letter, said Virginia Canter, the chief ethics counsel for the government watchdog group Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington. Jill Biden's office and Trump's transition team have not responded to a request for comment. Legal experts say Trump's use of Biden's image to promote his products could be illegal. "Biden would have a strong claim, under current law, that Trump’s use of her actual photo, in advertising, to promote a commercial product" violates legal protections against using an individual's image for "commercial advantage without consent," said University of Virginia law professor Dotan Oliar, an intellectual property expert. However, the U.S. Constitution takes precedence over state law and Trump could use his First Amendment right to free speech as a defense if Biden sued. Rutgers University law professor Reid Kress Weisbord said he believes “there’s a good chance” that defense would be successful. “Even though Trump used Biden's name and likeness in a social media post about perfumes, which Trump may be selling for a commercial purpose, the content of that post mixes humor and politics in a way that almost certainly implicates free speech rights,” Weisbord wrote in an e-mail to USA TODAY. For a First Amendment defense to succeed, Trump would have to prove he made a “transformative use” of Biden’s image, Weisbord said. The nature of his post – joking that a woman whose husband lost the 2024 presidential race to him “can’t resist” him - could help his case, the professor added. “Trump would (likely) claim that he infused his post with politics and humor in a way that transformed the use of her name and likeness,” Weisbord said. Jonathan Faber, managing partner at Luminary Group LLC and an attorney who specializes in intellectual property issues, said he agreed there could be "heightened First Amendment allowances" when dealing with a case involving political figures. However, he said "these arguments typically apply to a third party critiquing a political figure directly, not one prominent political figure selling product featuring another public figure." "Whether this is worth pursuing or is best left alone may be driven as much by PR analysis as by Right of Publicity analysis, but it seems to be an unprecedented scenario," added Faber. Trump named his new line of perfumes and colognes “fight, fight, fight” to evoke the words he shouted after being shot in the ear at a rally in Pennsylvania. For Biden, the Constitution could limit her ability to fight.

BJP conspiring to delete votes of AAP supporters, alleges Kejriwal NEW DELHI: AAP National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal hit out at the BJP for allegedly conspiring to delete votes of his party’s supporters in Delhi. Sharing videos of media interactions with residents of Shahdara constituency’s Ambedkar Camp and other areas on social media platform X on Sunday, Kejriwal accused the saffron party of dishonestly targeting specific voters. “The BJP is discreetly and selectively removing votes of AAP supporters to win elections in Delhi dishonestly,” he alleged. He claimed that scribes going around the streets of Delhi are uncovering the truth as people openly share their experiences. The AAP chief asked how over 300 votes of people were removed from Shahdara despite the fact that they are living there for decades solely on the basis of complaints made by BJP’s Booth Level Agents (BLA). Citing an example where the names of three family members were removed from the list bearing the stamp and signature of the saffron party’s BLA, he claimed that the BJP was conspiring to win the Delhi election by removing AAP supporters from voter lists. He had earlier alleged that in the Shahdara constituency alone, the BJP has filed applications with the Election Commission to remove the names of over 11,000 voters. The AAP chief also claimed to have testimonies of the people who said their names have been removed despite living at the same address for decades. AgenciesCam Carter scored LSU's first eight points and finished with a game-high 23 and LSU raced to a 37-8 lead on its way to a 110-45 victory against outmanned Mississippi Valley State on Sunday in Baton Rouge, La. Vyctorius Miller added 20 points and Jordan Sears and Daimion Collins scored 15 each for the Tigers (11-2), who led 55-13 at halftime. It was their final game before opening Southeastern Conference play against visiting Vanderbilt on Saturday. LSU, which defeated Mississippi Valley 106-60 last season, shot 65.7 percent (46 of 70) from the floor. The Delta Devils (2-11) had no player score in double figures. The closest was Alvin Stredic with eight points. Mississippi Valley State remained winless against Division I opponents and have an average margin of defeat of 44.2 points heading into their Southwestern Athletic Conference opener at Alabama State on Jan. 4. Stredic's field goal tied the score at two before Carter made a tie-breaking 3-pointer to give LSU the lead for good. Carter made another 3-pointer during a 7-0 run that increased the lead to 12-4. Another field goal by Stredic ended that run before Carter and Sears each made a 3-pointer and the Tigers pushed the lead to 20-6. Stredic made another field goal, giving him six of his team's first eight points, before Carter made a 3-pointer and another basket to help fuel a 17-0 run that enabled LSU to build the 37-8 bulge. Johnathan Pace made a field goal to stop the run, but Sears and Curtis Givens III each made a 3-pointer to complete a 10-0 run that expanded the lead to 47-10. Jair Horton answered with the Delta Devils' only 3-pointer of the half before Miller and Sears each scored four points and the Tigers led by 42 at the break. Carter (16 points) and Sears (10) combined to score twice as many points as Mississippi Valley State in the half. Carter made 6-of-10 3-pointers and Sears made 4 of 8. --Field Level Media
Pakistan 2024: Troubled ties with neighbours, economic woes and a problem called Khan
The London stock market is home to a diverse mix of dividend shares. Thanks to years of underperformance, investors can grab a high dividend yield on a large number of them. Broker forecasts aren’t always a reliable guide to future returns. But if City estimates are accurate, a £10,000 lump sum invested in THIS real estate investment trust (REIT) will provide £1,589 worth of over the next two years (with next year’s dividends reinvested). I think it’s worth serious consideration leading into the New Year. Here’s why. First, the bad news Many property stocks like ( ) have dropped in value in the second half of 2024. This reflects growing fears over the possibility of interest rates remaining higher than hoped. In fact, this asset class has fallen sharply since the Bank of England started raising interest rates in late 2021. Higher rates lower property valuations and push up borrowing costs. This has made REITs such as this a less appealing investment more recently. Unfortunately, investor demand may remain weak, too, if the direction of recent inflationary data becomes a trend. News that November’s Ponsumer Price Inflation (CPI) reading was an eight-month high has tapered expectations of substantial Bank of England rate cutting in 2025. Yet, despite the threat of further share price weakness, I’m still tempted to buy more Primary Health shares for my portfolio. This is thanks to its excellent dividend prospects. Look at those dividends! As the chart above shows, the business has an impressive record of raising dividends dating back to the late 1990s. This is down to multiple factors, including: The long record of profits growth this has provided has, in turn, meant Primary Health Properties has been able to consistently raised dividends. Under REIT rules, the firm must pay at least 90% of annual rental earnings out to shareholders. Bright future City analysts expect earnings and dividends to keep rising throughout their three-year forecasts. And so the on Primary Health shares stands at 7.6% and 7.7% for 2025 and 2026, respectively. To put that in context, the average dividend yield on shares sits way back at 3.6%. I opened a position in Primary Health in 2022 to boost my passive income. And I plan to hold it for the long term. I believe it will deliver exceptional returns in the years ahead as Britain’s growing elderly population drives healthcare demand services through the roof. In fact, I’m considering adding to my holdings in the New Year.None
