NEW YORK (AP) — Sean “Diddy” Combs was denied bail on Wednesday as he awaits a May sex trafficking trial by a judge who cited evidence showing him to be a serious risk of witness tampering and proof that he has violated regulations in jail. U.S. District Judge Arun Subramanian made the decision in a written ruling following a bail hearing last week, when lawyers for the hip-hop mogul argued that a $50 million bail package they proposed would be sufficient to ensure Combs doesn’t flee and doesn’t try to intimidate prospective trial witnesses. Two other judges previously had been persuaded by prosecutors’ arguments that the Bad Boy Records founder was a danger to the community if he is not behind bars. Lawyers did not immediately respond to messages seeking comment on the decision. Combs, 55, has pleaded not guilty to charges that he coerced and abused women for years, aided by associates and employees. An indictment alleges that he silenced victims through blackmail and violence, including kidnapping, arson and physical beatings. A federal appeals court judge last month denied Combs’ immediate release while a three-judge panel of the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Manhattan considers his bail request. Prosecutors have insisted that no bail conditions would be sufficient to protect the public and prevent the “I'll Be Missing You” singer from fleeing. They say that even in a federal lockup in Brooklyn, Combs has orchestrated social media campaigns designed to influence prospective jurors and tried to publicly leak materials he thinks can help his case. They say he also has contacted potential witnesses through third parties. Lawyers for Combs say any alleged sexual abuse described in the indictment occurred during consensual relations between adults and that new evidence refutes allegations that Combs used his “power and prestige” to induce female victims into drugged-up, elaborately produced sexual performances with male sex workers known as “Freak Offs.” Copyright 2024 The Associated Press. Luke Humphries defeats Luke Littler to retain Players Championship Finals titleWASHINGTON — President Joe Biden faces a stark choice as he contemplates broad preemptive pardons to protect aides and allies from potential retribution by Donald Trump: Does he hew to the institutional norms he’s spent decades defending or flex the powers of the presidency in untested ways? The deliberations so far are largely at the level of White House lawyers. But the president discussed the topic with senior aides, according to two people familiar with the matter who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss. No decisions have been made, the people said, and it is possible Biden opts to do nothing at all. President Joe Biden speaks Thursday during a tree-lighting ceremony on the Ellipse near the White House in Washington. Biden is taking the idea seriously and has been thinking about it for as much as six months — before the presidential election — but has been concerned about the precedent it would set, according to another person familiar with the president’s discussions who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity. The president could, if he chooses, issue blanket pardons to specific people whom Trump and his allies threatened to punish. Or he could pardon a broad class of people — not unlike pardons issued to those convicted of federal marijuana offenses or those ensnared in the “don't ask, don't tell” military policies. A federal judge rebuked President Joe Biden's pardon for his son, Hunter, who the president claims was unfairly prosecuted. Either way, he'd be using the powers of the presidency in a new way. Some worry that Trump and his allies, who talked of enemies lists and exacting “retribution,” could launch investigations that would be reputationally and financially costly for targeted people even if they don’t result in prosecutions. Biden already extended a broad pardon to his son, Hunter , who was convicted and pleaded guilty in tax and gun cases. He explained that decision by saying he believed the prosecution of his son was poisoned by politics. White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said Friday that Biden plans additional pardons before leaving office, though she would not elaborate on the process. She referenced “changing factors” that motivated the president to pardon his son despite promising he wouldn’t. She said Republicans continued to try to see Hunter Biden investigated for an array of alleged offenses, a rationale that could support additional pardons for Biden aides and allies. White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre speaks Friday during the daily briefing at the White House in Washington. It was two weeks ago that one of the president’s closest allies in Congress, Rep, Jim Clyburn of South Carolina, encouraged Biden to pardon his son Hunter. The morning after that conversation, Clyburn told Biden’s staff that he believed the president should also pardon those being targeted by Trump. “I was very forceful in my discussions with him about what I thought he ought to do regarding his son,” Clyburn said Friday. “But I also told them that I thought he ought to go even further, because all the noise about Jack Smith and Liz Cheney and Doctor Fauci and all of that.” Special Counsel Jack Smith has been investigating Trump for his efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election and for accusations he hoarded classified documents at his home. Liz Cheney, a conservative Republican , was the vice chairwoman of the congressional committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol insurrection and campaigned for Vice President Kamala Harris. Fauci, an infectious-disease expert, was instrumental in the government's response to the coronavirus. All raised the ire of Trump. President-elect Donald Trump criticized President Joe Biden's decision to pardon Hunter Biden for federal gun and tax convictions, calling it a "miscarriage of justice." Trump highlighted individuals imprisoned for the January 6th Capitol riots, questioning whether they were included in Biden's pardon. Trump suggested he might consider pardoning Hunter Biden during an interview in October, expressing concern over its impact on the country. Hunter Biden's pardon prevents significant prison time, as he faced nearly forty years for gun and tax-related convictions. Clyburn said he told Biden’s team, only half jokingly, that because the Supreme Court already said the president has certain immunities, “let’s give that same immunity to Jack Smith for carrying out his duties and to, Doctor Fauci, Liz Cheney, they were carrying out their duties.” Among those mentioned publicly for possible presidential pardons, there are different sentiments on whether pardons would even be wanted. Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi supported the president’s move to pardon his son, but was silent on the speculation that Biden is considering additional pardons for her or others. A top Pelosi ally, Rep. Adam Schiff, the Democratic congressman who led Trump’s first impeachment, panned the idea of pardoning Biden's allies. He says “the courts are strong enough to withstand” the worst of Trump’s threats. “I don’t think a preemptive pardon makes sense,” the incoming senator told NPR recently. “I would urge the president not to do that. I think it would seem defensive and unnecessary,” Schiff said. Several people on President-elect Donald Trump's team are reportedly supporting efforts to make an Edward Snowden pardon happen. Democratic Rep. Jamie Raskin, the lead manager on Trump’s second impeachment on the charge of inciting the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection at the Capitol, said the speech and debate clause in the Constitution already protects members of Congress from prosecution for participating in their legislative duties. Raskin said figures like Mark Milley, the former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and John Kelly , Trump's former White House chief of staff, would similarly be protected by the First Amendment. Still, Raskin said the question is, “Should they go through the criminal investigation and prosecution for not doing anything wrong? I think that’s why this whole issue has erupted.” Raksin added that with Trump promising to pardon hundreds of people who assaulted police officers on Jan. 6, “I can hardly fault President Biden for exploring the use of the pardon to protect people from a fraudulent and unjust prosecution.” House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries said he’s had no conversations with the White House regarding any preemptive pardons for current or former members of Congress. Last Word Before Aviva Perlo settled in Philadelphia, the author, educator and social worker described herself as a “wandering Jew.” After moving throughout the country, the Texas native decided one day to outline exactly what she wanted in the place she would settle down in and call home: she came up with diversity, creativity, a healthy Jewish community, universities, tradition and trees. She also wanted a place with plenty of museums, affordable housing and a healthy amount of social justice advocacy. “Philadelphia fit my bill,” she said, smiling. Perlo moved to the City of Brotherly Love about 20 years ago, fell in love with it quickly and has stayed in love with it since. As someone who comes from a state and region that isn’t exactly bustling with Jewish life, Perlo said she has found herself energized by the large Jewish community of Philadelphia. “I didn’t know that the options for Jewish life in Philadelphia were so extensive,” she said. “I love that I can hop on a train and go do Jewish stuff two hours north in New York, too, or two hours south in D.C.” Perlo said that the best part of the city she now calls home, however, is its status as a premier spot to study trauma. Trauma is Perlo’s focus, which she teaches and writes about, largely through a Jewish lens. In Philadelphia, she has gotten the chance to learn from the world’s best. “In 2010, there were two M.D.s who started a new Ph.D. program at Drexel in trauma studies that had no precedent — looking at how trauma is an epidemic through epidemiological and statistical analysis,” Perlo said. She studied under both of these physicians, named Dr. Sandra Bloom and Dr. John Rich. In addition to the work she has gotten to do at various Philadelphia area universities, Perlo has learned a lot from Philadelphia’s annual trauma studies conference that attracts hundreds of interested experts to the city. The work is heavy, but for Perlo, there was never another option. “I feel like Hashem called me to do this work,” she said. “My family was not your typical one with Bubbie’s brisket on the stove and one parent who is a doctor and one who is a lawyer, and so I always felt like helping to lift people up was my mission.” Perlo said that while her work isn’t exclusively for Jewish people or through a Jewish organization, it is still inherently Jewish because of the values it exemplifies. She said that the Jewish values of feeding the hungry, caring for the homeless and helping and visiting sick people are shared by social workers. “There are infinite correlations between the two,” she said. For Perlo, the appeal of the thriving Jewish community of Philadelphia is largely in the social aspect of the group. She said that there is one familiar Jewish tradition that really grounds her and reminds her often why she loves her new home. “Part of my gratitude to Philadelphia is for the Jewish activities, which I spend a lot of my time doing. Shabbos is one of the things that has really kept my life juicy and sustained. More than I keep Shabbos, Shabbos keeps me, and it enables me to do things like write a book,” she said. “I can step back and think, ‘What are the words I want to convey? What are the messages that I think will best lift someone up?’” Perlo has been all around and seen Judaism in practice in just about every corner of the country. She said that every community brings its own flair to modern interpretations of Judaism. In the West, she experienced vegan Shabbat dinners and Torah yoga. In Texas, she attended kosher barbecues and fundraisers to benefit the Jewish community and the state of Israel. In Philadelphia, the Jewish experience revolves around community, history and the appreciation of the rich tradition of Jewish community leaders. Perlo said that she thinks that she has gained so much from learning about other places and the people that call them home. “Some people aren’t interested in exploring the different parts of the Jewish community, but I am, and I think it makes us more whole to find out what everyone’s soul is wanting, and why,” she said. And you know why: pretty soon, you’re going to have a visitor come down your chimney or through a window or door of your house and leave you presents, if you’ve been good. No doubt, you’re excited for that, and for the twinkly lights and the holiday music. Christmas can’t some soon enough, so why not spend your time waiting by reading these great books... For any kid who’s asked for a new pet from Santa,“A Stray Dog for Christmas: How Suzy was Adopted” by Jack Jokinen, illustrated by Wendy Tan(Sourcebooks Kids, $14.99) is the book to read. It’s the story of a puppy without a name who was accidentally locked in a house. There are people who live there. Will they like her? Will they be her friend? Will they give her a name, once and for all, of her very own? Animal-loving kids ages three to six will want to find out! Be sure to check out the afterword, too, and meet the real Suzy. You can’t go wrong with a classic Christmas tale, and “‘Twas the Night Before Christmas,” adapted by the Poem by Clement C. Moore, illustrated by Jane Chapman (Sourcebooks Kids, $18.99) is that, with a twist. Here, Pa, and Ma in her kerchief are bears, as is Santa, whose sleigh is pulled by eight kinds of dogs sporting antlers on their heads. As the story unfolds, other animals join the tale and it’s adorable on steroids. Kids ages five to eight who love Christmas won’t want you to put this book away with the decorations. They’ll want to have it read to them year ‘round. Children who are familiar with the “Chicka Chicka Boom Boom” books will be happy to see “Chicka Chicka Ho Ho Ho” by William Boniface, illustrated by Julien Chung (Beach Lane Books / Simon & Schuster, $18.99) on the top of their Christmas book TBR pile. Here, A talks to B, and B convinces C to meet in the Christmas tree, which starts a tale of decorations and presents and “oh, no!” Kids ages two and three, those who are just learning their alphabet, will have fun with this picture book, and the shiny illustrations inside are very appealing. Older children (ages four and five) will love that the story reads so much like a jazzy, be-bop rhyme that they might even be tempted to make up a tune to go with it. And if these, and your personal favorite childhood Christmas books, aren’t enough for your youngster, be sure to check with your favorite bookseller or librarian and ask for new favorites and new traditions. Anyone at the bookstore or library can steer you toward even more picture books — literally, there are dozens of new ones for small children released ever year — and they’ll be happy to show you what’s new in holiday books for older kids and teens, and books for you, too. As for the above titles, though ... you’d better watch out for them.

Promising review: " My wife gave me this beard maintenance kit as a Christmas present and I fell in love with it after the first use . The scent is awesome and my wife and kids like it as well. I’ve tried many of the expensive brands that show commercial actors looking like Vikings or lumberjacks offering beard maintenance kits for $125 (each) and higher, even. This one is a fraction of the price, smells better than the overhyped competition, and does a much better job at keeping my beard looking amazingly maintained . No alcohol in the ingredients! Over the years I’ve easily spent over $3,000 in beard maintenance products, this one takes the lead by far. Even if it were the same price as the competition, this one would be my go-to brand. If you were considering buying the more expensive and popular brands, I urge you to please consider this brand for beard maintenance. I assure you, you’re going to be grateful you did. My hair is very frizzy. This product has conditioned my facial hair better than it’s ever been, since I began wearing a beard in 2012. I hope this review helps my fellow beard-bros out! This one performs better for a fraction of the cost. Best of luck!" — Raf Get it from Amazon for $38.99 . 8. I've tried the telephoto lens and the macro lens, and I'm pretty happy with the results. The images are clear, and the macro lens can show details. I got the maroon color, and I am so happy I did. This is my favorite Christmas sweater, and that is saying a lot because I get a new one each year! It will be hard to top this one next year!" — MG Thies Get it from Amazon for $29.99+ (available in sizes S–5XL and 42 colors/styles). 12. Cocktail drink bombs for yummy drinks and plenty of options. Each box contains six mouthwatering flavors — mimosa, margarita, mojito, piña colada, raspberry-orange, and peach bellini. Get it from Uncommon Goods for $30 (available in two styles). 13. A mug warmer because no one enjoys lukewarm coffee or having to drink their cappuccino super fast so that it's hot the entire time. This device will keep their Cup o' Joe warm until they drink the last drop. Note that the mug is not included! Promising review : " I got this as an office Christmas gift and have used it basically daily for the past year . The warmer keeps either coffee or tea at a perfect temperature for hours. It shuts off after four hours, which is a nice safety feature, as well as flashing red when it's still hot once you turn it off. It's a nice color and the cord is a pretty good length, I keep it on the edge of my desk where I won't accidentally turn it on or off (the touch button is very sensitive). If you have a cold beverage, it won't necessarily warm it up, unless you give it a long time, but it will keep a hot beverage perfectly hot , and it has three settings. If your cup gets to less than half full, on the highest setting it can even get a touch too hot. Since it works via surface area, it definitely works best with flat bottomed mugs, which can be difficult to find. There's a huge difference between the temperature of a mug with a completely flat bottom and a mug with just a small ring that touches the heating element — for those I recommend using a small mug cover on top. It also works well to melt candles if you want to have a nice scent but avoid soot from actual flame." — BC Get it from Amazon for $16.93+ (available in seven colors/styles). 14. She’s 5’2" so it goes to about her knees, which she likes, extra perk her toy poodle also fits in the pocket for extra snuggles! Overall I couldn’t be happier I got my mom such an amazing gift and she’s so hard to get gifts for ! I will definitely buy more for myself and others for Christmas." — MsCake Get it from Amazon for $37.99+ (available in 28 colors). 15. BuzzFeed Shopping writer Emma Lord says, "UMMMM I bought this because it was on one of Amazon's top selling products pages for so long that I was like 'Why are people so obsessed with this moon!!' And now, my friends, I know. First of all, it really does look hyper realistically like a small moon and adds a chill vibe wherever you plant it. But it's also just so soothing to watch and have in the periphery . You can control dozens of different colors for it and either keep it on those colors or have them alternate, fade quickly, or fade gradually. It's super easy to charge and controlled by a remote, so you can move it off its stand and have it light up wherever you want. These days I tend to turn it on for my designed ~me time~ night every week, in which I will light a candle, pour a glass of red wine, read a romance novel, and, of course, light my lil' moon. Definitely one of my favorite 'the internet made me do it' purchases." Get it from Amazon for $14.99+ (available in six sizes). 16. I used it for the first time on Christmas Eve right before family was coming over and I was done in maybe 15 minutes! Coming home, looking in the mirror, and seeing that their face hasn't budged sounds like the gift that keeps on giving. Alrighty, friends, so I was an Urban Decay All Nighter girly through and through, but this stuff was ALWAYS on my FYP on TikTok. So I thought, what the heck, let me give it a try. Y'ALLLLLLLL!! This stuff — *THIS STUFF* it's witchcraft and I'm speechless. I have the most oily skin and not many products I've tried ~actually~ do what they say they do. I put it to the test on a very busy day — I went axe throwing, to a boat party, took a nap, and my makeup looked like it did when I first applied it 12 hours later . Promising review: " I got these for a Christmas gift, and then REPURCHASED them for myself BEFORE my first box was finished because they are THAT GOOD! I love a nice hot bath, these bath bombs make it 100x better. Each bath bomb is individually wrapped with the sticker to indicate the scent. They ALL smell AMAZING! They don't just smell amazing in the box, and in your bath, but actually on your skin after your bath is over. The scent lingers on the skin in a very pleasant way. They are also very moisturizing! My skin is so soft and moisturized after my bath. You will notice the oil that is used in the bath bomb, in your bath, so if you're not into that I wouldn't purchase. There are a few bath bombs that have actual flower petals in them, so if you're not into that either, you can scrape them off the top of the bath bomb without doing much damage to the bath bomb itself. My only complaint is that there are only 12 in a box, and I have to take my hot bath every other day, instead of every day, to make my bath bombs last. But I'd rather just repurchase and enjoy my ME TIME with these awesome bath bombs!" — DominiqueSP Get a box of 12 from Amazon for $20.80+ (available in two styles). 40.
