(AP) — Two people were rescued when a California pier under construction partially collapsed and fell into the ocean Monday as the state's central coast was pounded by heavy surf from a major storm expected to bring hurricane-force winds to the seas off the Pacific Northwest, authorities said. Residents were warned to stay away from low-lying areas near the beaches around the Santa Cruz Wharf, about 70 miles (112 kilometers) south of San Francisco, as the storm rapidly gained strength. “You are risking your life, and those of the people that would need to try and save you by getting in or too close to the water,” the National Weather Service's Bay Area office said on the social platform X. Lifeguards rescued two people from the water and a third person was able to swim to safety, officials with Santa Cruz Fire Department said. No one had serious injuries, Mayor Fred Keeley said. The mayor said the section of the wharf that collapsed had been damaged over time. The structure was in the middle of a $4 million renovation following destructive storms last winter. “It’s a catastrophe for those down at the end of the wharf," said David Johnston, owner of Venture Quest Kayaking, who was allowed onto the pier to check on his business. Tony Elliot, the head of the Santa Cruz Parks & Recreation Department, estimated that about 150 feet (45 meters) of the end of the wharf fell into the water around 12:45 p.m. It was immediately evacuated and will remain closed indefinitely. Some of the wharf’s pilings are still in the ocean and remain “serious, serious hazards” to boats, the mayor said. Each piling weighs hundreds of pounds and is being pushed by powerful waves. Gov. Gavin Newsom's has been briefed and the state's Office of Emergency Services is coordinating with local officials, his office said. Forecasters warned that storm swells will continue to increase throughout the day. “We are anticipating that what is coming toward us is more serious than what was there this morning,” the mayor said. Ocean swells along California's central coast could reach 60 feet (18 meters) as the Pacific storm gains strength through Monday, the weather service said. “A rapidly developing storm will bring hurricane force winds to the areas well offshore of the Pacific Northwest tonight,” the weather service's Ocean Prediction Center said on X. Winds off Oregon and Washington could peak near 80 mph (130 kph) and seas will build over 30 feet (9.1 meters), forecasters said. The end of the pier that broke off had been shut down during renovations. The portion, which included public restrooms and the closed Dolphin restaurant, floated about half a mile (0.8 kilometers) down the coast and wedged itself at the bottom of the San Lorenzo River. Those who fell into the water were two engineers and a project manager who were inspecting the end of the wharf, officials said. No members of the public were in the area. While the majority of the animals at Riverside have experienced Wild Lights before, one has not. Rajah the tiger joined the animals at Riverside Discovery Center in November. Rajah is part Bengal tiger and part Amur tiger — or a Siberia-mix tiger. Rajah earned his name by public vote, though handler Mandi Shemenski said he’s still getting used to it. Rajah’s acquisition by the Scottsbluff zoo was made possible by a $2,500 donation by Teresa Rice and family and donation from Platte Valley Bank for $17,500 for improvements to the cat enclosure. While some would think a dangerous, wild animal would fight its handlers during a move, Rajah is anything but difficult, Shemenski said. “You expect a traumatic situation for that to be like, a lot of stress on him,” she said. “(But he was so calm the whole time. So we unloaded him right there (in his enclosure) and opened it up and he just walked out all chill.” Even though Rajah’s calm demeanor may make him seem more approachable, Shemenski and fellow discovery center staff have protocols in place for safety. “We use a bamboo back scratcher on him to give him the tactile enrichment that he seems to want,” Shemenski said. “The way he rubs up against the mesh, it seems like he really wants us to pet him. And we're like, ‘We can't do that,’ but we can use a back scratcher.” At the zoo, both Rajah and his neighbor, Smokey the Bear, have learned what certain drivers on golf carts mean. “Golf carts equal food,” Shemanski said, with a laugh. “Some of the animals are smart enough to know who we are, and that when we are coming in a golf cart, it means that we're carrying food.” But Rajah and Smokey don’t get large chunks of meat every day. Similar to what Rajah’s diet would be like in the wild, he wouldn’t eat a whole carcass in a single day, so he doesn’t get a whole carcass at the zoo every day, but has fasting days. “So they get a bone instead of a diet at the end of the day for their teeth health,” Shemanski said. “Fasting them one day is just to kind of let their gut readjust.” For now, Rajah is Shemanski’s favorite animal at the center. “I'd say the newness of him is pretty fresh,” she said, “and he gets me the most excited because of how cool he is and how much he wants to interact with us.” During Wild Lights at the Zoo, which is sponsored by Riverstone Bank, animals like Rajah will receive gifts to open, a fun event for visitors to watch. “(The animals) usually get some presents wrapped up in wrapping paper,” Riverside event coordinator Valencia Allen said. “(The chimps) get stuffed animals (and) different things that they can have. It's pretty fun and interesting to watch.” Tickets for Wild Lights are $4 for members and $8 for non-members, ages 2 and older. Concessions will be open and Santa and The Grinch will make random appearances. “I believe Santa said he'll be here most of the nights, and then The Grinch will be here ... the following Friday and Saturday,” Allen said. Dinner with Santa, a turkey dinner in coordination with Wild Lights, will take place on Saturday, Dec. 14 from 5 - 7 p.m. Tickets for that event are pre-sale only so contact the Riverside Discovery Center to see if tickets are still available. Riverside Discovery Center is also starting its membership stocking event. Stockings are available for $125 and are filled with a yearly family membership, Christmas candy, two hot cocoa packs, a candy cane and a small plush animal of your choice. He made another strong move Thursday, wrestling his steer to the ground in 3.9 seconds to finish in a three-way tie for second place during the eighth round. That was worth $20,285 and pushed his Las Vegas earnings past the $100,000 mark with two days remaining. “Coming into tonight with what they’ve done on that steer previously, he was not one of my picks to run out here,” said Struxness of Milan, Minnesota, now living in Perrin, Texas. “You can’t change what you have, so we came up with a game plan. SINGAPORE: My 87-year-old mother was always an independent, active person. But everything changed the day she fell at home and fractured her back and finger. This accident transformed the role of our migrant domestic worker (MDW) from Myanmar, Ms M, from focusing on housekeeping to becoming a full-time caregiver. With my mother’s increasing needs, the communication barriers between us and Ms M became more pronounced. The intensity of the situation even made us consider hiring a second helper. Despite these hurdles, an unexpected bond formed in our family. The employer-employee dynamic evolved into something more collaborative, as we worked together to provide my mother with first-class care. This experience made me realise how vital foreign domestic workers are as caregivers in Singapore’s ageing society. CRUCIAL ROLE OF MIGRANT DOMESTIC WORKERS IN ELDERCARE Beyond routine housekeeping, MDWs support seniors in a wide range of daily activities, including medication management, showering, feeding, and transferring them from bed to wheelchair. MDWs also accompany their employers to hospital appointments, and many work round-the-clock, such as helping elderly family members use the bathroom in the middle of the night. These demands can become overwhelming, draining both physical and emotional energy. It’s clear that families must support them in return - this requires moving past a traditional employer-employee dynamic. After all, MDWs aren’t just workers - they are live-in members of our homes. However, this relationship between families and MDWs isn’t without its challenges. Incidents of maids abusing the elderly , children and pets in their care occasionally make headlines in Singapore. On one hand, these news stories bring attention to the risks of domestic abuse and the need for vigilance. On the other, it may reinforce stereotypes and breed mistrust, overshadowing the often-underappreciated role MDWs play in caregiving. Instead, we must foster a relationship grounded in empathy, where support between MDWs and employers flows both ways. A NEW FORM OF KINSHIP In Singapore, families continue to prefer home care over institutional care to ensure a higher quality of life for their ageing loved ones. One study in Belgium on person-centred care reveals that older persons who have hired a live-in migrant care worker can reduce feelings of loneliness by building a trusting relationship with the carer. When employers and their families provide MDWs with warmth and support, the relationship moves beyond mere monetary employment into a form of emotional companionship that is essential for both the caregiver and the cared-for. Ms S from the Philippines has been an integral part of my godmother’s family for 16 years. In addition to managing my godmother’s daily needs, such as medication and meals, Ms S has become a cherished family member. She not only prepares delicious local dishes but also serves as a loyal companion on family trips. While the impact of this blurring of lines between employment and companionship may not be unambiguously positive or negative, it is evident that MDWs reshape the social dynamics of the families they’re employed in. The quality of eldercare often hinges on the constant adaptation and negotiation between the MDW, the elderly, and the family. STRENGTHENING OUR SOCIAL FABRIC Singapore employers can certainly do more to support MDWs. Building trust, exercising patience and leveraging technology are key to creating a more inclusive environment, one that flattens the hierarchy of command and encourages mutual respect. In our communication with Ms M from Myanmar, we use tools like Google Translate to help bridge the language gap, alongside pictorial sketches and gestures for clarity. Additionally, we encourage Ms S to attend orientation classes to familiarise herself with local languages and dialects. Likewise, we can make an effort to understand and appreciate the diverse cultures of the MDWs we employ. People remember how they were treated far more than what they were paid for the services they provided. Therefore, we can offer incentives beyond increased wages such as short overseas trips or a nice meal out for dedicated MDWs, where possible. Most employers aim to cultivate long-term relationships with the ideal MDW, as this reduces the stress of repeatedly searching for new ones and fosters a stable, respectful working environment. Ultimately, enhancing the support for MDWs will reflect our collective commitment to a more compassionate and equitable society. By valuing their contributions and addressing their needs with empathy and foresight, we can ensure that the caregiving ecosystem remains resilient and responsive.
