The largest U.S. automaker on Tuesday pulled the plug on Cruise after evaluating the continued investments needed in a competitive space, executives said, adding they intend to fold some of Cruise's talent into GM to continue development of driver assistance systems. "We consider the news a step in the right direction for GM, as we think investors were losing patience with its hefty spending (~$10B) related to robotaxi development with very little to show for its investment," Garrett Nelson, analyst at CFRA Research wrote. GM shares jumped 3% after-hours on Tuesday immediately after the announcement, but gave back those gains during Wednesday's regular session and were down about 1% in late afternoon. Nelson said the announcement was "a black eye for the credibility of GM management that, as recently as last year, told investors the Cruise business could generate $50 billion in annual revenue by 2030." For the year to date, GM has far outpaced its competitors. Its stock is up 45% for 2024, while Ford's is down 14% and Stellantis is down 37%. GM CEO Mary Barra was already scheduled to speak with reporters Wednesday evening. She will likely face questions on cost-cutting moves the automaker is taking as it navigates turbulence in EV demand, changing technology and a new presidential administration. “This is the latest in the series of decisions that GM has announced which underscore our focus on having the right technology for the future of our company and the industry and reflects our commitment to execute with speed and efficiency," Barra told analysts Tuesday. GM recently scaled back plans for electric vehicles, sold a stake in one of its joint venture battery plants and recorded a $5 billion loss on its China business as it restructures. GM is now doubling down on its core business: making gasoline-powered pickup trucks and other large vehicles. Cruise's competitors - including Alphabet's Waymo, Baidu and Tesla - are well funded, and may have better technology, analysts said. Waymo, which is expanding its autonomous ride-hailing services, is still losing billions of dollars per year. Barclays noted Alphabet, which has over $100 billion in earnings annually, can absorb costs associated with Waymo's development. GM, however, is expected to record earnings of $14 billion to $15 billion for 2024. "It’s clear from Waymo that an AV robotaxi business is best owned by an entity with deep pockets," Barclays said. While there may be overlaps in certain policy areas, assuming a complete replication of policies overlooks the potential for new directions and adaptations in response to changing circumstances. Uefa Champions League: Manchester City 3 (Haaland 44' (p), 53', Gundogan 50') Feyenoord 3 (Hadj-Moussa 75', Gimènez 82', Hancko 89') PEP Guardiola lurched into full-blown crisis last night, watching his team concede three times to Feyenoord in the space of 14 minutes late in their Champions League tie to cap a remarkable Manchester City collapse. City had led 3-0 until their late implosion which was completed in the 89th minute when Igor Paixao beat Emerson to a long ball forward, heading past the stranded keeper. The winger reached the by-line before picking out David Hancko with a superb cross which the defender headed in for an unbelievable Dutch equaliser that means City have now not won in six games. Yet, for much of the evening, it had looked as though Haaland had rescued City, as he struck twice in the space of eight minutes, either side of halftime, to give City an apparently unassailable lead. His first came just before the interval, after he was bundled to the ground by Quinten Timber and Romanian referee Radu Petrescu’s on-field call of a penalty was confirmed by VAR. The striker, as he has so often in his City career, made no mistake from the spot, his tremendous left-foot hit giving the keeper no chance as it flew into the Feyenoord goal. Soon after the restart, Ilkay Gundogan added a second before Haaland scored City’s third, and his own second of the night, on 52 minutes with a goal that, finally, after a month of hardships, looked like the champions of old. Gundogan started the attack with a sweeping pass out to the right wing which Matheus Nunes took in his stride before delivering a low cross which Haaland met, sliding in to covert from six yards. It was his 46th goal in 44 Champions League games, a astonishing tally that took him one above Mo Salah and level, in 13th place in the all-time scoring charts, with the legends Eusebio and Filippo Inzaghi. For all the doomsday talk around the Etihad, City had made a confident start against the Dutch visitors - although, of course, the same could have been said on Saturday when Tottenham inflicted the first ever four goal defeat they have suffered at the Etihad. Once the game got underway, at least City showed a n impressive level of aggression. After just nine minutes, Haaland headed against the post, with keeper Timon Wellenreuther dong well to scramble the ricochet to safety. It was all reminiscent of the Tottenham debacle when City had started well but conceded to the visitors’ first attack. If Paixao had done better from Feyenoord’s first foray forward, volleying wildly over the bar on 22 minutes, then the night could have become instantly problematic. Instead, City bit back and Foden pivoted skilfully on the edge of the area second later, sending a low shot arrowing towards the far corner of the net and forcing Wellenreuther into another impressive save. Paixao remained a threat, however, swapping passes with Inbeom Hwang before curling a shot straight at Ederson as Feyenoord attempted to hit City down a right flank which was often under-manned when Rico Lewis stepped up into midfield. Hwang, himself, soon threatened, with a terrific hit from a half-cleared corner that flew off Nunes and was cleared to safety as City remained uncharacteristically vulnerable. But, after Haaland had charged through to win a corner just before the break, Timber’s foul on the City striker handed the hosts a much-needed opener. Gundogan doubled the lead on 49 minutes, volleying in, via a kind deflection off David Hancko, after Gvardiol had laid a Foden corner into his path on the edge of the area. Finally, it was all so routine - as so much of Guardiola's reign at City has been - and the Premier League champions looked well on course to secure a top-eight finish in the Champions League standings. But wait. City reminded us of their current fragility on 75 minutes when Gvardiol’s terrible back pass was intercepted by Anis Hadj Moussa who rounded Ederson and rolled the ball into the net, leaving Guardiola with his head in his hands. It was a sign of worse to come. Just seven minutes later, Paixao’s far-post ball was turned across goal by Jordan Lotomba for Santiago Gimenez to chest the ball over the line. City’s decline had been heralded by a triple substitution made by Guardiola after 69 minutes although one of those replacements, Kevin De Bruyne, at least hit the bar as his team pressed for a fourth. But, on the final whistle, a stunned Etihad was left to ponder yet another alarming chapter in their recent slide. That gave the 4,000 visiting Feyenoord fans plenty to cheer and they remained in good voice, serenading their hosts with chants about their former manager Arne Slot and singing “You’ll Never Walk Alone,” the anthem of the Dutchman’s current employers. When City next hear that tune, at Anfield on Sunday, it will be an even sterner test of their recovery than Slot’s former club could offer last night. On one hand, the heightened tensions in the region could strain diplomatic relations between China and South Korea, especially if the situation escalates further. China has traditionally maintained friendly relations with both North and South Korea, and any conflict or instability in the region could potentially affect China's interests.

CHICAGO — With a wave of her bangled brown fingertips to the melody of flutes and chimes, artist, theologian and academic Tricia Hersey enchanted a crowd into a dreamlike state of rest at Semicolon Books on North Michigan Avenue. “The systems can’t have you,” Hersey said into the microphone, reading mantras while leading the crowd in a group daydreaming exercise on a recent Tuesday night. The South Side native tackles many of society’s ills — racism, patriarchy, aggressive capitalism and ableism — through an undervalued yet impactful action: rest. Hersey, the founder of a movement called the Nap Ministry, dubs herself the Nap Bishop and spreads her message to over half a million followers on her Instagram account, @thenapministry . Her first book, “Rest Is Resistance: A Manifesto,” became a New York Times bestseller in 2022, but Hersey has been talking about rest online and through her art for nearly a decade. Hersey, who has degrees in public health and divinity, originated the “rest as resistance” and “rest as reparations” frameworks after experimenting with rest as an exhausted graduate student in seminary. Once she started napping, she felt happier and her grades improved. But she also felt more connected to her ancestors; her work was informed by the cultural trauma of slavery that she was studying as an archivist. Hersey described the transformation as “life-changing.” The Nap Ministry began as performance art in 2017, with a small installation where 40 people joined Hersey in a collective nap. Since then, her message has morphed into multiple mediums and forms. Hersey, who now lives in Atlanta, has hosted over 100 collective naps, given lectures and facilitated meditations across the country. She’s even led a rest ritual in the bedroom of Jane Addams , and encourages her followers to dial in at her “Rest Hotline.” At Semicolon, some of those followers and newcomers came out to see Hersey in discussion with journalist Natalie Moore on Hersey’s latest book, “We Will Rest! The Art of Escape,” released this month, and to learn what it means to take a moment to rest in community. Moore recalled a time when she was trying to get ahead of chores on a weeknight. “I was like, ‘If I do this, then I’ll have less to do tomorrow.’ But then I was really tired,” Moore said. “I thought, ‘What would my Nap Bishop say? She would say go lay down.’ Tricia is in my head a lot.” At the event, Al Kelly, 33, of Rogers Park, said some of those seated in the crowd of mostly Black women woke up in tears — possibly because, for the first time, someone permitted them to rest. “It was so emotional and allowed me to think creatively about things that I want to work on and achieve,” Kelly said. Shortly after the program, Juliette Viassy, 33, a program manager who lives in the South Loop and is new to Hersey’s work, said this was her first time meditating after never being able to do it on her own. Therapist Lyndsei Howze, 33, of Printers Row, who was also seated at the book talk, said she recommends Hersey’s work “to everybody who will listen” — from her clients to her own friends. “A lot of mental health conditions come from lack of rest,” she said. “They come from exhaustion.” Before discovering Hersey’s work this spring, Howze said she and her friends sporadically napped together in one friend’s apartment after an exhausting workweek. “It felt so good just to rest in community,” she said. On Hersey’s book tour, she is leading exercises like this across the country. “I think we need to collectively do this,” Hersey explained. “We need to learn again how to daydream because we’ve been told not to do it. I don’t think most people even have a daydreaming practice.” Daydreaming, Hersey said, allows people to imagine a new world. Hersey tells her followers that yes, you can rest, even when your agenda is packed, even between caregiving, commuting, jobs, bills, emails and other daily demands. And you don’t have to do it alone. There is a community of escape artists, she said of the people who opt out of grind and hustle culture, waiting to embrace you. The book is part pocket prayer book, part instruction manual, with art and handmade typography by San Francisco-based artist George McCalman inspired by 19th-century abolitionist pamphlets, urging readers to reclaim their divine right to rest. Hersey directs her readers like an operative with instructions for a classified mission. “Let grind culture know you are not playing around,” she wrote in her book. “This is not a game or time to shrink. Your thriving depends on the art of escape.” The reluctance to rest can be rooted in capitalist culture presenting rest as a reward for productivity instead of a physical and mental necessity. Hersey deconstructs this idea of grind culture, which she says is rooted in the combined effects of white supremacy, patriarchy and capitalism that “look at the body as not human.” American culture encourages grind culture, Hersey said, but slowing down and building a ritual of rest can offset its toxicity. The author eschews the ballooning billion-dollar self-care industry that encourages people to “save enough money and time off from work to fly away to an expensive retreat,” she wrote. Instead, she says rest can happen anywhere you have a place to be comfortable: in nature, on a yoga mat, in the car between shifts, on a cozy couch after work. Resting isn’t just napping either. She praises long showers, sipping warm tea, playing music, praying or numerous other relaxing activities that slow down the body. “We’re in a crisis mode of deep sleep deprivation, deep lack of self-worth, (and) mental health,” said Hersey. According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data from 2022 , in Illinois about 37% of adults aren’t getting the rest they need at night. If ignored, the effects of sleep deprivation can have bigger implications later, Hersey said. In October, she lectured at a sleep conference at Gustavus Adolphus College in Minnesota, where her humanities work was featured alongside research from the world’s top neuroscientists. Jennifer Mundt, a Northwestern clinician and professor of sleep medicine, psychiatry and behavioral sciences, praises Hersey for bringing the issue of sleep and rest to the public. In a Tribune op-ed last year, Mundt argued that our culture focuses too heavily on sleep as something that must be earned rather than a vital aspect of health and that linking sleep to productivity is harmful and stigmatizing. “Linking sleep and productivity is harmful because it overshadows the bevy of other reasons to prioritize sleep as an essential component of health,” Mundt wrote. “It also stigmatizes groups that are affected by sleep disparities and certain chronic sleep disorders.” In a 30-year longitudinal study released in the spring by the New York University School of Social Work, people who worked long hours and late shifts reported the lowest sleep quality and lowest physical and mental functions, and the highest likelihood of reporting poor health and depression at age 50. The study also showed that Black men and women with limited education “were more likely than others to shoulder the harmful links between nonstandard work schedules and sleep and health, worsening their probability of maintaining and nurturing their health as they approach middle adulthood.” The CDC links sleeping fewer than seven hours a day to an increased risk of obesity, diabetes, hypertension, heart disease and more. Although the Nap Ministry movement is new for her followers, Hersey’s written about her family’s practice of prioritizing rest, which informs her work. Her dad was a community organizer, a yardmaster for the Union Pacific Railroad Co. and an assistant pastor. Before long hours of work, he would dedicate hours each day to self-care. Hersey also grew up observing her grandma meditate for 30 minutes daily. Through rest, Hersey said she honors her ancestors who were enslaved and confronts generational trauma. When “Rest Is Resistance” was released in 2022, Americans were navigating a pandemic and conversations on glaring racial disparities. “We Will Rest!” comes on the heels of a historic presidential election where Black women fundraised for Vice President Kamala Harris and registered voters in a dizzying three-month campaign. Following Harris’ defeat, many of those women are finding self-care and preservation even more important. “There are a lot of Black women announcing how exhausted they are,” Moore said. “This could be their entry point to get to know (Hersey’s) work, which is bigger than whatever political wind is blowing right now.” Hersey said Chicagoans can meet kindred spirits in her environment of rest. Haji Healing Salon, a wellness center, and the social justice-focused Free Street Theater are sites where Hersey honed her craft and found community. In the fall, the theater put on “Rest/Reposo,” a performance featuring a community naptime outdoors in McKinley Park and in its Back of the Yards space. Haji is also an apothecary and hosts community healing activities, sound meditations and yoga classes. “It is in Bronzeville; it’s a beautiful space owned by my friend Aya,” Hersey said, explaining how her community has helped her build the Nap Ministry. “When I first started the Nap Ministry, before I was even understanding what it was, she was like, come do your work here.” “We Will Rest!” is a collection of poems, drawings and short passages. In contrast to her first book, Hersey said she leaned more into her artistic background; the art process alone took 18 months to complete. After a tough year for many, she considers it medicine for a “sick and exhausted” world. “It’s its own sacred document,” Hersey said. “It’s something that, if you have it in your library and you have it with you, you may feel more human.” lazu@chicagotribune.comDespite this, many developers remain disillusioned with Ubisoft and are calling for greater accountability and transparency from the company moving forward. The incident has shed light on the challenges faced by developers in the gaming industry and has sparked a larger conversation about the importance of proper management and support for creative projects.

Space Don't miss out on the headlines from Space. Followed categories will be added to My News. Large unidentified drones displaying advanced technology have been flooding the night skies of New Jersey for weeks, spooking residents and leaving authorities scrambling to identify them. Now a New Jersey Congressman says he’s pretty sure he knows where they’re coming from, urging that they be “shot down”. Representative Jeff Van Drew, a Republican who sits on the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, said he had “gotten to know people” and he had it from “very high sources, very qualified sources”, that “Iran launched a mothership, probably about a month ago, that contains these drones”. “That mothership is off the east coast of the United States of America,” he told Fox News on Wednesday morning. “They’ve launched drones, everything that we can see or hear. Again [this] is from high sources. I don’t say this lightly.” The Pentagon has since denied Mr Van Drew’s claims. “There is no Iranian ship off the coast of the United States, and there’s no so-called ‘mothership’ launching drones toward the United States,” Pentagon spokeswoman Sabrina Singh said during a Wednesday briefing. “At this time we have no evidence that these activities are coming from a foreign entity or are the work of an adversary. We’re going to continue to monitor what is happening but at no point were our installations threatened when this activity was occurring. These are not US military drones. This is being investigated by local law enforcement.” Mystery drones have been flying over New Jersey. Picture: X Mr Van Drew told Fox News the three possible origins for the drones were the US government, “glorified hobbyists” or an adversary nation. “We know it’s not our own government, because they would have let us know,” he said. “It could have been some glorified hobbyist or hobbyists that were doing something unbelievable. They don’t have the technology. The third possibility was somebody, an adversarial country doing this. Know that Iran made a deal with China to purchase drones, motherships and technology in order to go forward.” He stressed “the sources I have are good, I can’t reveal who they are because they’re speaking to me in confidentiality”. “These drones should be shot down,” he said. “Whether it was some crazy hobbyist that we can’t imagine, or whether it is Iran and I think it very possibly could be, they should be shot down. We are not getting the full deal. The military is on alert with this.” The comments left Fox News host Harris Faulkner stunned. “You’ve given us some pretty dire information just here and I want to make sure our viewers are digesting this,” she said. “Iran has the capability to pull up along our eastern seaboard and launch drones the size of an SUV into the skies of several states, particularly New Jersey where we know the incoming President has a large home in the same county where some of these drones have been seen.” Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Picture: khamenei.ir/AFP Faulkner questioned how the drones were being fuelled. “They have to land somewhere, drones don’t fly forever,” she said. “Why don’t they close down the airspace? Yes it’s inconvenient, yes it’s the holidays — shut it down. But if you start shooting things and you don’t know how they’re fuelled, that’s going to be mass explosions. This isn’t like one spy balloon. Congressman, this is serious.” Mr Van Drew insisted “we’ve got to bring them down”. “I don’t know exactly where they’re landing,” he said. “I have some information ... again this isn’t just Jeff Van Drew ... I’m telling you the straight deal from very high positioned individuals who are telling me this. The bottom line is they’re launching them, they’re all across the country. We don’t even have anything like this. We’ve got to get them down, we’ve got to determine how they function, what they do, make sure that we can get them and you’re right, in a safe way. This is a clear and present danger to the United States and our President-elect, and this is serious business.” Drones all over my town in Bergen County NJ tonight. I walked up by the police station and library b/c thatâs where they were clustered. I have tons of videos. Police said they are aware and following their movements. (Sorry for the commentary I was sending to my friends) pic.twitter.com/RXw0a2j0fY — Kateðoð ̧ (@Kate_inNJ) December 9, 2024 The startling claim comes as officials have continually told Americans that the drones pose no threat — even as the FBI has admitted it has no idea what they are or how to stop them. The large drones have been spotted flitting across the night skies across New Jersey for weeks, baffling residents with mysterious arrays of flashing lights and seemingly aimless movements. During a briefing on Wednesday, a Pentagon spokeswoman said the US government “at this time have no evidence that these activities are coming from a foreign entity or are the work of an adversary”. “We’re going to continue to monitor what is happening but at no point were our installations threatened when this activity was occurring,” she continued. “These are not US military drones. This is being investigated by local law enforcement.” Meanwhile, more footage captured by a New Jersey mother and shared on X showed blinking lights buzzing over Bergen County on Sunday night. “They’re just pacing back and forth going very slow,” she said in the clip, adding she counted five or six flying machines hovering overhead. “It doesn’t sound like a plane ... no, no, it’s too quiet — that’s a drone.” Similar videos have flooded social media since November 18, when police first responded to calls about the drones hovering over Morris County. Sometimes numerous objects have been spotted flying in formation, and they’ve begun appearing across parts of New York, too. One Sunday alone, there were 49 reported sightings, mostly in New Jersey, although Governor Phil Murphy said some of those could have been misidentified aircraft or multiple reports of the same object. Having said that, it’s really frustrating that we don’t have more answers as to where they’re coming from and why they’re doing what they’re doing.” Mr Murphy said he had been in contact with the White House and top national security officials “pretty much all day” on Sunday. “I’m hoping we’ll get answers sooner rather than later,” he said. “I would just ask folks to continue to let the FBI or their local law enforcement know when they see something and we’ll continue to do everything we can with our federal partners to get clearer answers.” He noted the technology appeared to be “very sophisticated”. “The minute you get eyes on them they go dark,” he said. “We’re obviously most concerned about sensitive targets and sensitive critical infrastructure. This is something we’re taking deadly seriously. We’ve got good co-operation out of the feds but we need more. We’re not aware of any nefarious drones that have crashed. If there is one that’s crashed can someone please call me and let me know where that is?” Speculation about the objects’ origins has ranged from Chinese spy operations — to visitors from other planets — to top-secret experimental military tech operated by the US government itself. “Unfortunately, we don’t have many answers, and we don’t want to guess or hypothesise about what’s going on,” FBI spokeswoman Amy J.
