On the evening of June 13th , Detective Ryan So was part of a search warrant and arrest operation returning to their facility after serving a warrant. His team was unloading equipment from a vehicle when he picked up a backpack from the vehicle. The rifle inside was in a folded position when it fell out of the bag. The rifle butt hit the pavement and the weapon discharged, according to a report released Thursday by the Arizona Division of Occupational Safety and Health (ADOSH). He later died at the hospital. Video in the player above includes previous coverage of So's death. ADOSH did not issue any worker safety violations, saying the employer was not aware of the rifle’s condition. The weapon that discharged was not So’s weapon, said ADOSH Director Brian Hudson on Thursday during a public meeting where the report was reviewed. “Apparently there was a round in the chamber,” he said. ABC15 is committed to finding the answers you need and holding those accountable. Submit your news tip to Investigators@abc15.com He acknowledged there may be internal policies within the Scottsdale Police Department related to gun storage and ammunition that are outside the jurisdiction of the state’s worker safety agency. The detective’s sister, Haerena So, attended the meeting and, through tears, questioned why something so negligent was allowed to happen. “Ryan’s death is not his fault. Ryan’s death was not caused by him.” She said his family is reeling from “this terrible, horrible tragedy” and they have no closure. The Maricopa County Medical Examiner has ruled So’s death accidental, saying he died of a gunshot wound to the neck. The 38-year-old was a nine-year veteran of the Scottsdale Police Department. He left behind a wife and three children. So was born in Scottsdale and attended the University of Arizona. His pastor at Valley Life Church, Brian Bowman, described him as a devoted father and a beloved church member. “Ryan loved Jesus with all his heart, and it showed in the way he cared for the people in our church,” Bowman told ABC15 in June. “He was a leader. People looked up to him and admired him.” Another outside agency – the Mesa Police Department – is conducting an investigation into So’s death per protocol. Scottsdale Police said in a statement to AB15 the report is being reviewed for redactions. It did not have an estimated date for release. Trump raced to pick many Cabinet posts. He took more time to settle on a treasury secretary WASHINGTON (AP) — President-elect Donald Trump launched a blitz of picks for his Cabinet, but he took his time settling on billionaire investor Scott Bessent as his choice for treasury secretary. The Republican not only wanted someone who jibes with him, but an official who can execute his economic vision and look straight out of central casting while doing so. With his Yale University education and pedigree trading for Soros Fund Management before establishing his own funds, Bessent will be tasked with a delicate balancing act. Trump expects him to help reset the global trade order, enable trillions of dollars in tax cuts, ensure inflation stays in check, manage a ballooning national debt and still keep the financial markets confident. Trump chooses Bessent to be treasury secretary, Vought as budget chief, Chavez-DeRemer for Labor WASHINGTON (AP) — President-elect Donald Trump has chosen hedge fund manager Scott Bessent, an advocate for deficit reduction, to serve as his next treasury secretary. Bessent, 62, is founder of hedge fund Key Square Capital Management. He previously had worked on and off for Soros Fund Management since 1991. Trump also said he would nominate Russell Vought, 48, to lead the Office of Management and Budget, a position he held during Trump's first term. And Trump chose Rep. Lori Chavez-DeRemer, an Oregon Republican, as his labor secretary, and Scott Turner, a former football player who worked in Trump’s first administration, as his housing secretary. Afraid of losing the US-Canada trade pact, Mexico alters its laws and removes Chinese parts MEXICO CITY (AP) — Mexico has been taking a bashing for allegedly serving as a conduit for Chinese parts and products into North America. Officials here are terrified that a re-elected Donald Trump or politically struggling Justin Trudeau could simply expel their country from the U.S.-Mexico-Canada free trade agreement. Mexico's ruling Morena party is so afraid its has gone on a campaign to get companies to replace Chinese parts with locally made ones. And its legislators are consciously tweaking the wording of major laws to try to make them compatible with the trade pact's language. Mexico hopes the rules of the trade pact would prevent the U.S. or Canada from simply walking away. US budget airlines are struggling. Will pursuing premium passengers solve their problems? DALLAS (AP) — Delta and United Airlines have become the most profitable U.S. airlines by targeting premium customers while also winning a significant share of budget travelers. That is squeezing smaller low-fare carriers like Spirit Airlines, which filed for bankruptcy protection on Monday. Some travel industry experts think Spirit’s troubles indicate less-wealthy passengers will have fewer choices and higher prices. Other discount airlines are on better financial footing but also are lagging far behind the full-service airlines when it comes to recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic. Most industry experts think Frontier and other so-called ultra-low-cost carriers will fill the vacuum if Spirit shrinks, and that there's still plenty of competition to prevent prices from spiking. What to know about Scott Bessent, Trump's pick for treasury secretary WASHINGTON (AP) — President-elect Donald Trump has chosen money manager Scott Bessent, an advocate for deficit reduction and deregulation, to serve as his next treasury secretary. Bessent is a past supporter of Democrats who has become an enthusiastic supporter of Trump. He’s an advocate of cutting spending while extending the tax cuts approved by Congress in Trump’s first term. He has said tariffs imposed during a second Trump administration would be directed primarily at China. What to know about Lori Chavez-DeRemer, Trump's pick for labor secretary WASHINGTON (AP) — President-elect Donald Trump has named Oregon Rep. Lori Chavez-DeRemer to lead the Department of Labor, elevating a Republican congresswoman who has strong support from unions in her district but lost reelection in November. Chavez-DeRemer has a legislative record that has drawn plaudits from unions, but organized labor leaders remain skeptical about Trump's agenda for workers. Trump, in general, has not supported policies that make it easier for workers to organize. Chavez-DeRemer is a one-term congresswoman, having lost reelection in her competitive Oregon district earlier this month. She joins Secretary of State-designate Marco Rubio, the Florida senator, as the second Latino pick for Trump’s second Cabinet. Trump taps a Fox News personality, a surgeon and a former Congressman to lead public health agencies WASHINGTON (AP) — President-elect Donald Trump has nominated a critic of COVID-19 health measures to lead the Food and Drug Administration. Dr. Marty Makary came to national attention for opposing mask mandates and other steps during the pandemic. He is a surgeon, author and professor at Johns Hopkins University. Makary is the latest of a string of Trump nominees who are deeply critical of government health regulators and experts. If confirmed, Makary would be expected to report to anti-vaccine activist Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Trump’s pick to oversee the nation’s health agencies. Bitcoin ticks closer to $100,000 in extended surge following US elections NEW YORK (AP) — Bitcoin is jumping again, setting another new high above $99,000. The cryptocurrency has been shattering records almost daily since the U.S. presidential election, and has rocketed more than 40% higher in just two weeks. It's now at the doorstep of $100,000. Cryptocurrencies and related investments like crypto exchange-traded funds have rallied because the incoming Trump administration is expected to be more “crypto-friendly.” Still, as with everything in the volatile cryptoverse, the future is hard to predict. And while some are bullish, other experts continue to warn of investment risks. Supreme Court steps into fight over FCC's $8 billion subsidies for internet and phone services WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court has stepped into a major legal fight over the $8 billion a year the federal government spends to subsidize phone and internet services in schools, libraries and rural areas, in a new test of federal regulatory power. The justices on Friday agreed to review an appellate ruling that struck down as unconstitutional the Universal Service Fund. The Federal Communications Commission collects money from telecommunications providers, who then pass the cost on to their customers. The Biden administration appealed the lower court ruling, but the case probably won’t be argued until late March. At that point, the Trump administration will be in place and it is not clear whether it will take a different view of the issue. Charlotte airport workers voting on whether to strike during busy Thanksgiving travel week CHARLOTTE, N.C. The vote is being taken by employees of two airport contractors who provide cabin cleaning services, trash removal and other services. The airport expects over 1 million passengers to depart from it the weekend before the holiday. The date of the proposed strike has not been announced.

There has been a flurry of upsets in college basketball so far during Thanksgiving Week. The UConn Huskies lost back-to-back games against Memphis and Colorado. No. 20 Texas A&M fell to Oregon, No. 21 Creighton fell to San Diego State, and No. 9 Alabama defeated No. 6 Houston, all in the Players Era tournament in Las Vegas on Tuesday. On Wednesday, the upsets continued as No. 14 Indiana lost to Louisville in the Battle 4 Atlantis in the Bahamas. Right after that, No. 3 Gonzaga fell to West Virginia in overtime. It was a stunning loss for the Bulldogs, who had a five-point lead with 25 seconds left in regulation. Kevin Jairaj-Imagn Images With less than 10 seconds, Gonzaga had a two-point lead, but a Nolan Hickman turnover sent Tucker DeVries to the free throw line, and he knocked down both to tie the game and send it to overtime. After the game, Mark Few shouldered the blame for not calling a timeout prior to Hickman's turnover, per Theo Lawson. "I shoulda called a timeout as that thing was progressing, it didn’t look great on the press break," Few said. "I probably should have burned one, we had it in our two guards’ hands and I trusted them." #Gonzaga 's Mark Few took blame for not calling a timeout before Nolan Hickman's late TO: "I shoulda called a timeout as that thing was progressing, it didn’t look great on the press break. I probably should have burned one, we had it in our two guards’ hands and I trusted them." The extra period was all West Virginia as they outscored Gonzaga 15-7 to get the stunning upset. It was Gonzaga's first loss of the year after key wins against Baylor, Arizona State, and San Diego State. However, despite a late lead, the Bulldogs suffered a crushing loss in the Bahamas. Next up for Gonzaga is a game on Thanksgiving Day against Indiana, in the loser's bracket. In December, tens of millions of claimants nationwide will receive another round of Social Security payments , which are given to recipients on a monthly basis. Each month, 72.5 million Americans receive checks, the timing of which is determined by the beneficiary’s date of birth and the kind of benefit they receive. In addition to paying retirement benefits, the Social Security Administration (SSA) also disburses disability and survivor benefits . Social Security makes new payment schedule official Depending on the claimant’s birthdate and the duration of their benefits, retirement payments are given out throughout the month. Usually given at the start of each month, Supplemental Security Income (SSI) helps aged, blind, and disabled people with low incomes and assets. However, this time, some claimants will receive an early payment for January benefits. Continue reading to find out when you may anticipate your monthly check. December 1st All Social Security and SSI payments made before July 1997 are payable that day. On December 3, your retirement check will be paid separately from your Social Security benefits if you receive both. December 13th On December 13, those whose birthdays fall between the first and tenth of any given month will get their monthly payment. December 20th On December 20, claimants whose birthdays fall between the eleventh and twentieth of any given month are paid. December 24th Benefits will be paid on December 24 to anyone born between the 21st and the 31st of any given month. December 29th Since January 1st is a holiday, persons who have been receiving Social Security and SSI benefits since before July 1997 will receive their January payments on December 29. It is important to highlight that this extra payment on December 29th comes as the first of January is a holiday. Therefore, whenever this happens, the Social Security Administration reschedules that payment for the preceding business day. For additional information, please always refer to the official Social Security payment schedule or access your My Social Security Account, where you can request information regarding your monthly payments, financial statements, and even a new Social Security card. Social Security has confirmed 3 changes that will impact beneficiaries in the country Officially, the new COLA for 2025 was set at 2.5 percent The 3.2% cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) that seniors received at the beginning of 2024 is significantly higher than the 2.5% COLA that Social Security announced for 2025. But it’s important to provide some background on this COLA. The 2025 COLA is lower because of the significant slowdown in inflation in 2024. Because costs aren’t rising as fast as they have in recent years, seniors receiving Social Security may already be feeling some relief. For certain beneficiaries, the earnings test limit will rise You can work and receive Social Security benefits simultaneously , but be aware of the program’s earnings-test limits if you do so before reaching full retirement age, as you can still work and receive benefits. The earnings-test limit, set at $23,400 in 2025, indicates the maximum income a worker can earn before Social Security benefits are withheld. This cap rises from $22,320 in 2024 to $23,400 in 2025, meaning that for every $2 increase in wages, $1 is deducted. Keep in mind that if you want to achieve full retirement age in 2025, your earnings test limit will be higher. In such a scenario, it will increase from $59,520 to $62,160 in 2024. After that, you run the risk of having $1 deducted from your earnings for every $3 you earn. Keep in mind, however, that if you are still working and have already reached your full retirement age, you don’t need to worry about these numbers. They won’t affect how much you get from the SSA. Those who receive benefits will have to pay more for each working credit To receive monthly benefits in retirement, individuals must pay into the program and earn 40 work credits over their lifetime, with one credit increasing from $1,730 in 2024 to $1,810 in 2025. If you work part-time and aim to qualify for Social Security, you should be aware of this statistic. Even at minimum wage, you should be able to obtain your four credits for the year.FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — As spontaneous celebrations rippled throughout the Los Angeles Chargers' locker room after their resounding 40-7 win over the New England Patriots, coach Jim Harbaugh grabbed general manager Joe Hortiz and wrapped him up in a bear hug. “Love you!” Harbaugh said. “Love you!” Hortiz responded. “Great job! Let's keep it going,” Harbaugh replied, finally loosening his grasp. The Chargers (10-6) are back in the playoffs. But the message is clear: They have their eyes on achieving much more. Justin Herbert threw three touchdown passes and Los Angeles locked up its second playoff appearance in three seasons with Saturday's victory. “We had a good opportunity tonight and we went out and took it," Herbert said. “We had a good plan. All week we knew how big of a game this was for us. Guys were dialed in, focused and we executed today.” It also secured the fourth postseason appearance in Harbaugh’s five seasons as an NFL coach, adding to the three he made during his stint with the San Francisco 49ers. “You talk to them and there's more to do,” Harbaugh said. “There's no coach who could have it better than to be coaching these players. Nobody. Maybe the only person would be future us, could have it better than us.” Herbert finished 26 of 38 for 281 yards to become the third player in NFL history with at least 3,000 passing yards and 20 touchdown passes in each of his first five seasons. He joins Pro Football Hall of Famer Peyton Manning and Russell Wilson. Ladd McConkey had eight catches for 94 yards and pulled in TD throws of 6 and 40 yards. With a 10-yard reception in the second quarter, he passed 1,000 yards receiving for the season, making him the third Chargers rookie receiver to reach that milestone. JK Dobbins rushed 19 times for 76 yards and a TD. The Patriots (3-13) have lost six straight games, their second such losing streak of the season. They are now 2-14 the last two seasons at home. “We just didn’t play well enough in any phase of the game,” coach Jerod Mayo said. “No complementary football, and that’s what you get.” Asked if he thinks he is coaching for his job, Mayo said it comes with the territory. “I’m always under pressure and it’s been that way for a very long time, not just when I became the head coach of the Patriots," he said. New England quarterback Drake Maye finished 12 of 22 for 117 yards and a touchdown. He became the first rookie quarterback in franchise history with a TD pass in eight straight games. But he was sacked four times, and a second-quarter fumble marked his eighth straight game with at least one turnover. Los Angeles outgained New England 428-181 for the game. Maye briefly left the game to be evaluated for a head injury following a blow to his helmet in the first quarter. He was scrambling near the sideline on third down of the Patriots’ first possession when he was hit by Chargers cornerback Cam Hart, jarring the ball loose as Maye spun out of bounds. No flag was thrown on the play and Maye stayed down on the turf for several seconds before eventually getting up and jogging off the field. He initially sat on the bench before going to the medical tent for evaluation. He was replaced by backup Jacoby Brissett in the next series, which ended in a punt. But after further evaluation in the locker room and a Cameron Dicker 27-yard field goal put the Chargers in front 10-0, Maye returned to the game for the Patriots’ third series, at the 10:15 mark of the second quarter. Maye scrambled for 9 yards on his first play back, ending with him being hit by linebacker Junior Colson as he slid to the ground. Colson was flagged for unnecessary roughness. Five plays later, Maye mistimed a toss to Demario Douglas, causing a fumble that was recovered by Derwin James. The Chargers took over on the New England 24 and nine plays later, Herbert connected with McConkey for a 6-yard touchdown pass to put Los Angeles in front 17-0. Injuries Chargers: WR Joshua Palmer left the game in the third quarter with a heel injury. DB Elijah Molden limped off the field after a collision in the third quarter. He returned but was later driven off the field on a golf cart because of a shin injury. Patriots: In addition to Maye, CB Christian Gonzalez left the game in the second quarter to be evaluated for a head injury and was later ruled out with a concussion. Rookie record McConkey, a second-round draft selection, also set a Chargers rookie record for catches, surpassing Keenan Allen, who had 71 in 2013. Up next Chargers: Visit Las Vegas in their regular-season finale. Patriots: Host Buffalo next Sunday in their season finale. AP NFL: https://apnews.com/hub/nfl
Charles & Colvard, Ltd. Receives Non-Compliance Letter from NasdaqChandigarh, Nov 23 (PTI) Former Punjab finance minister and BJP candidate Manpreet Singh Badal failed to wrest the Gidderbaha assembly segment which he represented four times in the past. The AAP won Gidderbaha, Dera Baba Nanak, and Chabbewal assembly segments while the Congress won the Barnala seat in the bypolls, the results of which were declared on Saturday. Badal lost his security deposit, stranded at the third spot with 12,227 votes (8.9 per cent of total polled votes) in Gidderbaha. AAP candidate Hardeep Singh Dimpy Dhillon won the Gidderbaha seat, defeating his nearest rival and Congress nominee Amrita Warring. In a fierce contest, Dhillon defeated Amrita by a margin of 21,969 votes. Dhillon secured 71,644 votes (52.16 per cent), while Amrita got 49,675 votes (36.17 per cent). Manpreet was seeking re-election, 12-years after he lost his stronghold. During his campaign, Manpreet invoked his uncle and five-time chief minister late Parkash Singh Badal and the work he did during his four stints as an MLA from the constituency. The Gidderbaha seat fell vacant after Raja Warring, who was Congress MLA, was elected to the Lok Sabha from the Ludhiana seat in the 2024 parliamentary elections. The Gidderbaha seat in Muktsar district was once considered the stronghold of Akalis. Former Punjab chief minister late Parkash Singh Badal represented the seat for five consecutive terms -- 1969, 1972, 1977, 1980, and 1985. Manpreet began his political journey from Gidderbaha in 1995 on a Shiromani Akali Dal ticket and represented the seat in 1995, 1997, 2002, and 2007. After parting ways with the SAD, Manpreet unsuccessfully contested from Gidderbaha in 2012 on the ticket of People's Party of Punjab, which he had floated. He was then defeated by Amrinder Singh Raja Warring. He then contested election from Bathinda Urban assembly segment, which he won in 2017 on a Congress ticket. He lost the seat in 2022 and in 2023 defected to the BJP. Raja Warring won the Gidderbaha seat in 2012, 2017 and 2022. (This story has not been edited by THE WEEK and is auto-generated from PTI)
