Perhaps more impressive, Orlando (12-7) is now responsible for two of those three sub-100 performances by the Hornets (Minnesota is the other team). For reference, the Magic are 4-7 when opposing teams score 100 or more. Relying on its defense is how Orlando has won games since Banchero’s abdominal injury Oct. 30 at Chicago. And, until his return and likely after it, defense is simply how the Magic will have to continue to win. Beede’s Breakdown: How Magic leaned on defense to win at Hornets “We have the personnel,” said guard Cole Anthony who scored 16 points off the bench after Gary Harris exited Monday’s contest in the first quarter and didn’t return with a left hamstring strain. “We shot 39% from the floor as a team. It’s hard to win games like that, but we just did that. “We can compete with anyone in the league,” he added. “That’s just what I believe. We’ve proved that and we’re going to continue to prove that.” Anthony’s effort off the bench was a part of a larger one in which the reserves outscored Charlotte’s 53-15. They also outscored their own starters 53-42. Charlotte’s LaMelo Bell had 44. But for Anthony, in particular, his performance that included a team-high 8 rebounds with 4 assists could bode well for the Magic moving forward. Harris is out for for Wednesday’s game vs. Bulls (7-11). Suggs and Carter are not listed on the injury report, meaning the latter is set to return after missing the past 12 games. Chicago played at Washington on the first night of a back-to-back Tuesday. Monday’s contest was just Anthony’s second scoring in double figures after he fell out of Orlando’s rotation. But even in limited action, Anthony has remained consistent with his work in the gym and his teammates have noticed that. “He’s a professional,” forward Jonathan Isaac said. “This league is not easy. Sometimes it’s just not your night. And sometimes you don’t have the opportunity for it to be your night. “But he’s kept his head down and waited for the right opportunity and it happened to be this game. He’s a big reason why we won this game.” In a stretch where Magic need all hands on deck to help Franz Wagner find ways to win, Anthony potentially getting back on track consistently on offense — where he’s shot a career-low 36.2% from the field — only helps. “I put a lot of work in,” he said. “And when stuff don’t go your way, it’s hard to sometimes cope with that. President-elect Donald Trump called a federal judge's ruling that blocked the Biden administration from disposing of any southern border wall materials during the remainder of Biden's presidency a "crucial win" for the nation and national security in a social media post on Saturday. Newsweek reached out to Trump's communications team and the White House for comment via email on Saturday. Why It Matters Immigration and border security are key issues for Texas, a state that shares a border with Mexico. Republican Governor Greg Abbott and Republican Senators Ted Cruz and John Cornyn have frequently clashed with the Biden administration over border policy. Last year, Texas deployed large buoy barriers in the Rio Grande River to address a surge in undocumented migrants crossing into the U.S. from Mexico, prompting the Biden administration to sue Abbott. In July, a federal appeals court ruled the floating barriers could remain in place, but legal battles continue. The Biden administration has argued that Texas' use of buoys violates federal law, while Abbott continues to deploy more barriers. Meanwhile, Trump campaigned this election cycle on a crackdown on immigration and stricter border policy, including continuation of the physical wall on the U.S. southern border with Mexico. He has pledged to reshape the nation's immigration laws and processes as soon as he takes office in less than a month. What To Know A federal judge on Friday ruled in favor of Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton , a staunch Trump ally, who filed a motion for a permanent injunction to block the Biden administration from disposing pieces or materials related to the U.S.-Mexico border wall ahead of Trump's second term. Paxton and Trump worked together on the case, according to an X, formerly Twitter , post from Paxton on Friday. The Biden administration confirmed it will uphold the order, a press release from Paxton's office noted. In May, U.S. District Judge Drew Tipton ruled in favor of Paxton finding that the Biden administration violated federal law by attempting to redirect funds statutorily obligated for border wall construction. The administration was directed to continue the construction with the appropriated funds. In the same case, Paxton filed a new motion on December 17 after reports and photos emerged alleging the Biden administration was selling materials intended for border wall construction. The filing specifically cites "videos obtained by The Daily Wire [that] show flatbed trucks hauling massive, unused border wall panels—each weighing over 16,000 pounds—away from construction sites in Arizona to government auction yards," according to court documents reviewed by Newsweek. The Biden administration previously sold border wall materials in 2023 . Since taking office, Biden has worked to minimize construction on the wall. The money for the wall had been appropriated in 2019 before he took office and though he attempted to get the funding redirected, Congress had refused. Paxton's press release also noted that "the court stated that Texas is entitled to documentation proving that the Biden Administration has not violated an injunction" from May. "If it is shown that the Biden Administration disposed of border wall materials purchased with funds subject to that injunction in violation of a court order—or that the Department of Justice made misrepresentations regarding the border materials that have been auctioned off—this would constitute unethical and sanctionable conduct, and the responsible parties could be held in contempt of court," the attorney general added. In his Saturday post on Truth Social, Trump called the court order "a major, crucial WIN for America, and our National Security." He also pledged to rebuild the wall "in order to protect our Country from violent migrant crime, fentanyl smuggling, sex trafficking, terror attacks, and other heinous, Nation ending disasters." The president-elect added that the court's order "will expose just how corrupt and anti-American Radical Democrats are." He concluded his post: "We have to protect our Borders, and Save America. MAGA!" What People Are Saying Nick Sortor, conservative commentator and internet personality, wrote on X on Friday night: "HUGE win! Biden attempted to blatantly subvert the will of the American people by racing to auction off border wall materials for just pennies on the dollar, which would force Trump to buy them back at EXPONENTIALLY higher markups." Gunther Eagleman, a political commentator and MAGA supporter, praised Paxton in an X reply on Friday: "Ken Paxton is one of the best AG's in the country." What Happens Next Trump is expected to implement changes to the nation's immigration policies and border security measures once he takes office on January 20. On Saturday, he voiced support for H-1B visas for specialized foreign workers, amid Republican infighting over the issue earlier in the week. "I've always liked the visas, I have always been in favor of the visas. That's why we have them," Trump told the New York Post in a phone interview on Saturday. "I have many H-1B visas on my properties. I've been a believer in H-1B. I have used it many times. It's a great program," he said.

Barkley had touchdown runs of 72 and 70 yards for the Philadelphia Eagles in a 37-20 victory over the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday night. He now has five runs of 50-plus yards this season and is on pace to break Eric Dickerson’s single-season record of 2,105 yards set in 1984. Barkley’s historic performance against the Rams — his 255 yards set a team record — captivated a national audience and turned him into a fan favorite for the AP NFL MVP award. He’s not the betting favorite, however. Josh Allen has the best odds at plus-150, according to Bet MGM Sportsbook. Two-time MVP Lamar Jackson is next at plus-250 followed by Barkley at plus-400. Running backs have won the award 18 times, including three-time winner Jim Brown, who was the AP’s first NFL MVP in 1957. Quarterbacks have dominated the award, winning it 45 times. Only three players who weren’t QBs or RBs have been MVP. It takes a special season for a non-QB to win it mainly because the offense goes through the signal caller. Quarterbacks handle the ball every offensive snap, run the show and get the credit when things go well and the blame when it doesn’t. Adrian Peterson was the most recent non-QB to win it when he ran for 2,097 yards and 12 touchdowns for the Minnesota Vikings in 2012. Playing for a winning team matters, too. Nine of the past 11 winners played for a No. 1 seed with the other two winners on a No. 2 seed. The Vikings earned the sixth seed when Pederson was MVP. Barkley is a major reason why the Eagles (9-2) are leading the NFC East and only trail Detroit (10-1) by one game for the top spot in the conference. Does he have a realistic chance to win the MVP award? Kicker Mark Moseley was the MVP in the strike-shortened 1982 season when he made 20 of 21 field goals and 16 of 19 extra points in nine games for Washington. If voters once selected a kicker, everyone has a chance, especially a game-changer such as Barkley. Defensive tackle Alan Page was the MVP in 1971 and linebacker Lawrence Taylor won it in 1986. Running back Christian McCaffrey finished third in voting last year and wide receiver Justin Jefferson placed fifth in 2022. The Offensive Player of the Year award and Defensive Player of the Year award recognize the best all-around players on both sides of the ball, allowing voters to recognize non-QBs if they choose. Wide receivers and running backs have won the AP OPOY award seven times over the past 11 seasons. McCaffrey was the 2023 winner. The AP’s new voting format introduced in 2022 also gives non-QBs a better opportunity to get MVP recognition. Voter submit their top five picks for each award, with a weighted point system. Previously, voters made one choice for each award. A nationwide panel of 50 media members who regularly cover the league vote for MVP and seven other awards. The awards are based on regular-season performance. Clinching scenarios The Chiefs (10-1) and Bills (9-2) already are in position to lock up postseason berths right after Thanksgiving. Kansas City clinches a playoff berth with a win over Las Vegas on Black Friday and a loss by Miami on Thursday night, or a win plus a loss by Denver on Monday night. Buffalo can wrap up a fifth straight AFC East title with a victory over San Francisco on Sunday and a loss by the Dolphins. Status quo in Dallas? It’s not a given that the Dallas Cowboys will be looking for a new head coach after this season. Owner Jerry Jones said Tuesday on local radio that Mike McCarthy could end up getting a contract extension. “I don’t think that’s crazy at all. This is a Super Bowl-winning coach. Mike McCarthy has been there and done that. He has great ideas. We got a lot of football left,” Jones said.
