Jackson leads but Barkley closes gap in NFL Pro Bowl votingMy daughter loves to hear about my past. And by that, I mean my childhood. She has said many, many times that I, and my brothers and sister, grew up feral. By the basic meaning of that, that would suggest that my mother and grandmother (who was more prominent in my childhood since my dad died when I was 8), were nowhere to be found to dole out discipline or instruct us in the proper way to live our lives. That was not the case, mostly. They were there, of course. My grandmother only left the house to grocery shop, go to church (daily) and to escape to her sister’s house in South Philly every so often. When my mom wasn’t working, going to one of our games, or to a meeting for St. Pat’s, she was home. Usually on the phone with one of her thousands of friends, but she was home. They did indeed teach us the proper way to live our lives – by faith. And they taught us that lesson by example – by trusting in their faith every day – through some of the most crushing times that our family faced. But they both stood tall and firm in their beliefs, and that dominant example has served me, my sister and my brothers all well. But back to memory lane.... When Kaitlyn peppers me with questions, and trust me, she does, I’m always happy to lead her down my memory lane. While some of the memories aren’t the greatest, most end with my daughter laughing, and marveling that I survived growing up at 1709 Pine Street. Truth be told, I’m sometimes amazed that I survived growing up with my brothers and my sister (Trust me, she was not a conscientious objector. Mary Beth was a full-on warrior when she had to be). Lately, the questions Kate ask have been about my childhood Christmases, and that’s a bit of nostalgia that never gets old, as far as I’m concerned. Because Christmases past, heck – they were a breeze. When I was a kid, I wasn’t responsible for anything. The most pressing thing, and face it, only thing, on my “to-do list,” was just that, make a list. My mom didn’t require that I make a list. That was all on me – but that’s only because I had specific demands that needed to be met. I’ve written before about the best things I ever found under our (cutting-edge for the early 1970s) fake tree – the Barbie camper (special shout outs to Nana Min – the original finder of said camper, and Joe Maccolini, who followed up decades later with same said camper) and my ABA (red, white and blue striped) basketball; and my Little Kiddles Townhouse (with a working elevator!). And....I didn’t have to cook, clean, buy or wrap. I just had to be me, which came easy enough, most of the time. All I had to do was wait for Christmas to come. As a kid, that’s all I had to do, wait. As I was thinking the other day about that waiting, it hit me – what’s missing now from Christmas is the magic that comes from that glorious anticipation. As a kid, the greenlight for Christmas came once that Sears Wish Book was delivered. So, each day I’d wait for the mailman (not carrier, not back then, just mailman.) Once that book hit our mailbox, that’s when I knew it was “go time.” I scanned, studied, memorized, compared and contrasted, circled and then listed all the things I needed to see under our beautiful fake tree on Christmas. Then came Phase 2 of the Christmas operation – scanning the television listings for any and all Christmas specials. I didn’t care if it was Charlie Brown and Linus, Frosty, Rudolph, Santa, the Burgermeister Meisterburger or Jack Frost – I watched, and loved, them all – but I had to make sure I knew when they were on, and what channel. Because if I miscalculated, or misread the listings – that was it. I had to wait another year for Rudolph to guide the sleigh for Santa. These days, if you’re nostalgic for anything produced by Rankin and Bass, just turn to YouTube or Google. You can visit the Island of Misfit Toys in April, make Frosty come to life in August, and prompt Santa to come to town in February. Heck, Rudolph can light up on the Fourth of July. The anticipation of those magical moments of broadcast television and those holiday specials no longer exist. Phase 3 of the Christmas operation came when my mom decided it was time to start decorating. She put me in charge of setting up the fake tree (after my dad died there was no way my mom was dealing with the aggravation that came with getting a real tree). The branches were color coated, so it was easy enough even for a 10-year-old to assemble. Then came the anticipation of setting out all the ornaments. My favorite part of decorating the tree was finding the perfect branch for each ornament, but I had to wait until the lights were on. And that meant waiting for my mom or my brother Terry to take care of that particular chore. Which always seemed to take days (in reality, it was probably minutes). As an adult, decorating our tree has taken on a new look, so to speak. I do love getting out all our ornaments – which seem to number in the thousands (yes, exaggerating, but not by much). My mother-in-law collected Hallmark ornaments, so we have all of hers. And Jim and I started collecting our own when we got married in 1988, and some years we got more than one if I couldn’t decide on one. Then, we started collecting ornaments from any and all trips we took. Then all the ornaments the kids made in school... So, a few years ago we realized we needed to put up a second tree. My job is to unbox and unwrap each ornament, but the so-called decorating? I leave that to the experts. Because as a rule, I place one ornament on each tree, wait for each ornament to drop to the ground because they always do, no matter what (I always, always pick a non-breakable one), and then turn everything over to Matthew and Kaitlyn. My responsibility – in that phase of Christmas at least, was met. But as I unbox and unwrap each of those ornaments, whether they’re from my childhood, my marriage or my children, I’m reminded of their stories. And each one does indeed have a story. As I tell those stories to Kaitlyn and Matthew, those ornaments, those stories, connect me to the people I love and lost over a lifetime of Christmases. The stories with those ornaments are always joyful, and the memories always warm my heart. But those ornaments remind me that the magic of Christmas was never in the pages of that Sears Wish Book, or produced by Rankin and Bass or placed under an artificial tree. The magic of Christmas was, and always will be, wrapped up neatly in the people in our lives, past, present and future.

CVB Financial approves new stock repurchase program

Via Greg Hunter’s USAWatchdog.com , Former Wall Street money manager and financial analyst Ed Dowd of phinancetechnologies.com is back with more data on how the Biden Administration propped up a failing economy during the 2024 election year. Dowd contends “crisis level spending” was being administered, along with some bigtime “fraud.” Dowd says, “We had 10% deficit to GDP during the Great Financial Crisis (2008 – 2009) when we actually had a crisis. We had 8% deficit to GDP during this election year. You have to ask yourself, what was the crisis? " " The crisis was to get the Biden Administration (and Kamala) re-elected. So, they went on binge spending. They borrowed from the future to try to ensure they won. They did it two ways: They hired massive amounts of government personnel to float the economy, and they also did illegal immigration. We are thinking it was 10 million to 15 million illegal immigrants that came in the last four years. The majority of the illegal immigrants came in the last two years. That stimulated the economy and raised the velocity of money as those people were given money. All the NGO’s that facilitated the illegal immigration also got money, and that stimulated the economy. This deficit added $2 trillion, and that was unproductive assets. So, we borrowed from the future to create more government jobs and imported unprecedented amounts of illegal immigrants that don’t add to the economy. That’s what we have, and President Trump’s policies are going to reverse all that sugar juice. There are going to be mass deportations and reduced government spending. That short term juice is going away, and it was not sustainable anyway. The bond markets are revolting, and that could not have gone on much longer.” But it was not just massive money printing and debt creation that hid how bad the real economy was, it was very crooked data. Dowd says, “We also had bureaucratic incompetence or fraud or whatever you want to call it. They were padding the non-farm payroll numbers to the tune of 1.25 million jobs ... If you look at the chart, which we don’t have here, it’s insane. It’s one of the biggest misses between reality and estimates we have ever seen . It’s a seven-sigma event. It’s 1.25 million jobs. It’s already started downward revisions... The 3rd quarter GDP of 3% will be revised down, and when we get . . . the data in February, there will be more GDP economic revisions down. . . . The capital markets made bad decisions on this data. The Fed made bad decisions on this data, and corporations made bad decisions on this data. The price tag is coming due in 2025. Not only that, but we have a slowing economy across the globe... The amount of foreign assets in our stock market has never been higher, and this is all going to reverse. The price will be paid in 2025. . . .What’s coming is coming. It’s how low do we go, and when do the animal spirits kick in? So, there is pain coming, and it’s up to the Trump Administration to get all their policies enacted. Then we have a hope and a prayer coming out the other side that we will be way better off. The bottom line is there is pain coming regardless. The question is how fast can we restart with Trump’s policies? ” Dowd likes gold as part of a portfolio, and he is suggesting people get some cash in hand. Dowd says the war in Syria is going to intensify, and you will be hearing much more negative news from that area in 2025. Dowd, who wrote the popular book “Cause Unknown: The Epidemic of Sudden Deaths in 2021, 2022 and 2023,” says the epidemic caused by the CV19 injections will be with us for the rest of our lives . Dowd released new data that added 800,000 people to the 4 million disabled we already had since the CV19 mRNA vax began. Dowd says, “The other thing that is going on is the increase in cancers. Science is following up . . . There is cancer causing agents in the mRNA vaccines, and we are seeing cancers on the rise . . . . There are new (medical insurance) claims among young workers, especially cancer claims. . . . Insurance rates are going up across the board. The answer to what is going on is to raise prices. They are not differentiating between the vaxed and unvaxed. So, everybody’s prices are going up. Health insurance is going to become unaffordable for most people .” There is much more in the 48-minute interview. Zac Taylor's side possesses a pair of football's grandest talents in Joe Burrow and Ja'Marr Chase, both of whom have authored career-best campaigns amid a cesspool of chaos. Still, Cincinnati finds itself in third place in the AFC North, its postseason hopes all but vanquished . In those circumstances, it's easy to forget just how impressive Burrow and Chase have been in recent weeks. Chase is especially notable, as the LSU alum has long been jostling back-and-forth with a handful of vaunted receivers for the title of world's best. With his contract nearing its conclusion and a new deal — be that in the Queen City or elsewhere — fast approaching, Chase figures to become one of the sport's wealthiest purveyors. His performances as of late are the biggest reason why. There are plenty of ways to gauge effectiveness at the X. Few are as tried and tested as tracking receptions, receiving yards, and receiving touchdowns, though. So far, Chase leads the league in all those categories. If he can keep that pace up going forward, he'd put himself in pretty With that, here's what you need to know about Chase's chase for the much-admired receiving Triple Crown. Hall of Famers litter the list of receiving Triple Crown winners, with 12 of 17 trifectas being achieved by players eventually enshrined into Canton. Among the most notable luminaries are Don Hutson, who revolutionized receiving from the end position, Lance Alworth, and Jerry Rice. MORE BENGALS: Meet Cade York's girlfriend | Ranking Bill Belichick's fit with Bengals roster The most recent Triple Crown winner was Cooper Kupp. The Rams star collected the title when he snagged 145 balls for 1,947 yards, and 16 touchdowns in 2021. For his efforts, he was awarded AP Offensive Player of the Year distinction. Here's a look at the magnificent 17 receiving mavens who Chase is hoping to bump shoulders with in 2024. Saquon Barkley and Derrick Henry have turned back the clock and look well-equipped to compete for a spot on the 2,000-yard rusher list, while Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson, Jared Goff, Sam Darnold, and Joe Burrow have put forth sparkling campaigns under center for their respective sides. Chase's year, by comparison, seems to have gone under the radar. That really shouldn't be the case. The venerable wideout is making quite the run at the title of league's best receiver, netting nearly 100 yards per contest as of Week 14. He's on pace to smash his career highs in receptions (100), receiving yards (1,455) and receiving touchdowns (13). With five weeks left in the regular season, the sky is the limit for Chase, even if his Cincinnati teammates — Burrow notwithstanding — haven't quite been able to match his ambition thus far this year. Court cases spiral as more Aussies default on car loansChristians in parts of Lebanon celebrated the downfall of Syrian dictator Bashar Assad over the weekend, gathering in town squares to launch celebratory fireworks and gleefully tearing down pictures of Assad from border crossings. Among the Christian groups happiest to see the end of the Assad dynasty is the Lebanese Forces Party (LF), a militia group and current political party active during Lebanon’s civil war in 1976 led by a Maronite Christian leader named Bachir Gemayel, an ally of the U.S. and Israel, who was assassinated less than a month after being elected president of Lebanon in 1982 in a bomb attack that also killed dozens of his supporters. The assassination triggered further bloodshed, including an LF attack on Palestinian refugee camps in Lebanon guarded by Israeli forces that killed hundreds of people. Dr. Samir Geagea, current leader of the LF, said on Monday that Lebanese Christians have long blamed the Assad regime – then under the command of Bashar Assad’s father Hafez – for using terrorist cutouts to murder Gemayel because he was allied with Israel and opposed to Syrian influence in Lebanon. The assassinations of Lebanese Druze leader Kamal Jumblatt in 1977 and Sunni Lebanese President Rafik Hariri in 2005, along with the deaths of numerous other figures in Lebanon, are similarly believed by the Lebanese to have been targeted killings orchestrated by the Assad regime to protect its interests in Lebanon. Geagea told leaders of his party they should view Assad’s overthrow as “the day of Bachir Gemayel.” “They assassinated him, but turned him into a symbol,” Geagea said of Gemayel. “This is also a day of justice – not just for Syria, but for Lebanon.” A poster of Lebanon’s assassinated president-elect Bachir Gemayel is displayed by supporters of the Christian Lebanese Forces Party as they gather in Beirut’s Achrafieh neighborhood on December 8, 2024, to celebrate the downfall of the Assad regime in Syria. (IBRAHIM AMRO/AFP via Getty Images) The LF leader urged Hezbollah, Iran’s terrorist proxy and political party in Lebanon, to surrender its weapons and abandon its dreams of dominion by force, since Syria was a vital link in its supply chain of Iranian weapons. With Syria under the control of a Sunni jihadist alliance opposed to Iran, Hezbollah would be very hard-pressed to rebuild the combat capacity that was annihilated during its ill-fated war with Israel over the past year. “The game is over,” Geagea told Hezbollah. “Every day you delay is a day wasted, for yourselves and for all Lebanese.” “This is the beginning of building a true state in Lebanon,” he declared. Lebanese media channel MTV on Sunday marked the fall of Assad by commemorating the Lebanese victims of his regime, including Gemayel, Jumblatt, and Hariri. There were many more names on the list, including journalist Samir Kassir, a prominent Lebanese critic of the Syrian regime who was killed by a car bomb in 2005. Lebanon’s MTV channel also broadcast a fireworks display in Beirut celebrating the fall of Assad’s regime. Some Christians in Syria were thankful for the protection Assad extended to their communities, viewing him as the lesser evil compared to the hardcore Islamists who would eventually overthrow him. In the early months of the war, some Syrian Christian leaders openly stated they would prefer Assad to win quickly, because they feared the horrors of ISIS and al-Qaeda even more. Lebanese Christians had fewer reasons to appreciate Assad’s rule, and they have long memories of the murders ordered by his family. There are relatively few Christians left in Syria after ten years of a brutal civil war and the rise of the Islamic State. When the civil war began in 2011, there were about 1.5 million Christians in Syria, but today there are less than 300,000. Many of them fled into Lebanon, especially after ISIS began wiping out ancient Christian communities. Lebanon’s Christian refugees from Syria can only hope that Assad’s downfall, and the general disaster of Iran’s proxy war against Israel, will weaken Hezbollah and give Lebanon a chance to build a functioning government and multi-ethnic society after years of corruption and stagnation. Their odds of ever returning home to Syria have dimmed with an al-Qaeda offshoot holding power in Damascus – an outcome many of them feared throughout the long, bloody years of the Syrian civil war.
