In a separate trial, a Washington judge ruled that Google’s search business is an illegal monopoly, and the US Justice Department is asking that Google sell its Chrome browser business to resolve the case. The latest case, also brought by the Justice Department, focuses on ad technology for the open web - the complex system determining which online ads people see when they surf the internet. The vast majority of websites use a trio of Google ad software products that together, leave no way for publishers to escape Google’s advertising technology, the plaintiffs allege. Publishers - including News Corp and Gannett publishing - complain that they are locked into Google’s advertising technology in order to run ads on their websites. “Google is once, twice, three times a monopolist,” DOJ lawyer Aaron Teitelbaum told the court in closing arguments. Presiding judge Leonie Brinkema has said that she would deliver her opinion swiftly, as early as next month. Whatever Brinkema’s judgment, the outcome will almost certainly be appealed, prolonging a process that could go all the way to the US Supreme Court. ‘Winners and losers’ The government alleges that Google controls the auction-style system that advertisers use to purchase advertising space online. The US lawyers argue that this approach allows Google to charge higher prices to advertisers while sending less revenue to publishers such as news websites, many of which are struggling to stay in business. The US argues that Google used its financial power to acquire potential rivals and corner the ad tech market, leaving advertisers and publishers with no choice but to use its technology. The government wants Google to divest parts of its ad tech business. Google dismissed the allegations as an attempt by the government to pick “winners and losers” in a diverse market. The company argues that the display ads at issue are just a small share of today’s ad tech business. Smoke choked the spring air, the spire lay in rubble, and charred beams littered the nave. “We had lost the framework, the roof, the spire, and three sections of the vault,” Villeneuve, its chief architect since 2013, said. Yet just hours earlier, President Emmanuel Macron had issued an extraordinary decree: Notre Dame would rise again — in just five years. “There was one sole (problem),” Villeneuve said in an interview with The Associated Press, “the deadline.” It felt impossible. Yet as Villeneuve stepped through the wreckage with doubts in his mind, he was caught by surprise. Terrifying as it was to see the charred remains of the 861-year-old Gothic treasure, a beacon of hope emerged. “All the stained-glass windows were spared, the great organ, the furniture, the paintings -— everything was intact,” he realized. “It was doable.” A historic restoration Macron’s decree became the driving force behind the most ambitious restoration in modern French history. The announcement — to restore an edifice that took nearly 200 years to build in just five years — sparked unprecedented global support, with donations quickly nearing $1 billion . Singer Khalid comes out as gay after being outed online - Yahoo EntertainmentPatrick Gorski, 27, was arrested in Chicago on Thursday on charges including obstructing law enforcement officers during a civil disorder, a felony. A federal judge ordered him released on bond after his initial court appearance. Gorski didn’t immediately respond to an email seeking comment. An attorney who represented him after his arrest declined to comment on Gorski's behalf. Authorities allege that during the attack, Gorski climbed scaffolding, breaching police lines, and took photos and videos inside the building. He yelled at officers, pushed against an officer's riot shield and was eventually forced out after being sprayed with a chemical irritant, authorities said. When the FBI interviewed him, Gorski did not claim that he was working as a photojournalist during the Jan. 6, 2021, riot and said he didn't bring his professional camera to the Capitol. He told federal agents that he had worked as a photographer for the Chicago Fire Department and for Donald Trump’s 2020 presidential campaign. He has not professionally published any photographs of the Capitol riot, according to the FBI. An FBI agent’s affidavit says some of Gorski’s sports photographs are available through Getty Images and have been “picked up” by The Associated Press and USA Today. Authorities said Gorski has continued to take photos at some local sporting events in Chicago but hasn't published any political photographs in the last five years. Gorski is not an Associated Press journalist and has never been employed by the news organization, said Lauren Easton, AP's vice president of corporate communications. "We have distributed some photos he took for AP’s photo partners and member news organizations," Easton said in a statement. Gorski's resume says he works as a building commissioner for the Village of Norridge, Illinois, and graduated earlier this year from Southeastern Illinois University with a master’s degree in public administration. He attended then-President Trump's “Stop the Steal” rally near the White House on Jan. 6 before he marched to the Capitol in a group of people that included conspiracy theorist Alex Jones and Owen Shroyer , who has hosted a show on Jones' Infowars website. On the west side of the Capitol, Gorski climbed up a wall onto stairs, helped another rioter onto the wall and removed a tarp covering scaffolding, according to the FBI. He climbed up and down the scaffolding before he helped pass a bike rack to other rioters, the agent's affidavit says. Gorski pointed and yelled at police officers outside the building. He also clapped and chanted, “Let us in!” After rioters broke through a police lines and sent officers retreating, Gorski hung a flag over the edge of a balcony. Gorski used his phone to take photos or videos inside a tunnel entrance that police were guarding, according to the affidavit. He screamed at the officers, “This is our house!” as he pushed against an officer’s riot shield, the FBI said. Gorski left the tunnel after several minutes and entered the Capitol through the Senate Wing door, taking more photos or videos inside the building, the affidavit says. An officer had to forcibly move Gorski from a doorway in another part of the Capitol, according to the agent. Gorski retreated after police sprayed him with a chemical irritant. Approximately one year after the attack, the FBI received a tip that Gorski had posted photos of the riot in a group chat with friends. More than 1,500 people have been charged with federal crimes stemming from the Capitol riot.
The Pittsburgh Steelers have exceeded expectations thus far in 2024, as the team is 8-3 and atop the AFC North through 12 weeks. Pittsburgh suffered a disappointing 24-19 loss to the Cleveland Browns on Thursday Night Football in Week 12 but will look to bounce back in Week 13 versus the Cincinnati Bengals at Paycor Stadium. Though the Steelers have one of the most complete rosters in the NFL, the team still has some glaring weaknesses, primarily at cornerback. Outside of Joey Porter Jr., Pittsburgh lacks consistent production and high-level play at the position. Though Donte Jackson has shown flashes of dominance, the veteran has been extremely inconsistent in his debut campaign with the Steelers. General manager Omar Khan should look to address Pittsburgh's need for another boundary corner this offseason, and Bleacher Report's Alex Ballentine believes San Francisco 49ers' defensive back Charvarius Ward could join the Steelers in the offseason. Charvarius Ward's contract with the San Francisco 49ers is set to void at the end of the season. He will likely be a pricey free agent, and it only makes sense to sign him to a one- or two-year deal, but he could be the kind of player that puts the Steelers defense over the top. Pittsburgh is a legitimate contender this season because of an elite defense and an offense that understands how to help that elite defense. Joey Porter Jr. continues to improve, but veteran corner Donte Jackson is a bit of a liability. Ward wouldn't come cheap and they may have to do some cap gymnastics to make it work, but the risk could be worth the reward. Ward has been one of the most consistent cornerbacks in the NFL over the last few seasons, as the former undrafted free agent had a career year in 2023 and is having another solid campaign in 2024. Ward posted a career-high five interceptions and a league-leading 23 passes defended last season and was selected to the Pro Bowler and earned a second-team All-Pro selection. Ward doesn't have the flashy interception numbers this year, but the 28-year-old is allowing just a 53% completion rate and an 86.5 passer rating when targeted. The former Middle Tennessee State standout has missed the last three games due to personal reasons. Though Ward hasn't been elite in 2024, adding the Super Bowl LVI champion would be a savvy move from Omar Khan. Ward is still a reliable player who hasn't sustained many major injuries in his career and would be an excellent fit alongside Joey Porter in the secondary. Signing Ward shouldn't be problematic for Khan, as the Steelers are set to boast over $57 million in cap space, per Spotrac , and the former Kansas City Chief shouldn't demand an unreasonable deal. Ward has been an integral piece to the 49ers' defense over the last few years, but San Francisco recently gave fellow cornerback Deommodore Lenoir a $92 million extension , meaning Ward is likely the odd man out in the team's defensive back room.

CLEVELAND (AP) — The NFL has closed an investigation into sexual assault allegations against Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson, who is ending the season on injured reserve for the second year in a row. The league , trying to determine whether Watson should be punished. “The matter is closed,” league spokesman Brian McCarthy said Friday in an email to The Associated Press. “There was insufficient evidence to support a finding of a violation of the personal conduct policy.” Watson, who served an 11-game suspension in 2022, was accused of assault in Texas by a woman in September. She was seeking more than $1 million in damages before the sides reached a confidential settlement. Watson strongly denied the allegations through his attorney, Rusty Hardin. The 29-year-old Watson suffered a season-ending Achilles tendon rupture in October. He's been rehabbing the injury in hopes of returning next season. The Browns still owe Watson $46 million in each of the next two seasons after they traded three first-round picks to Houston and signed him to a five-year, fully guaranteed $230 million contract that has backfired. Watson has only played in 19 games over three seasons due to the suspension and injuries. He was acquired by the Browns, who were comfortable with his character despite Watson being accused of sexual assault and inappropriate conduct during massage therapy sessions while he played for the Texans. While he's in the clear with the league, Watson's future with Cleveland isn't so certain. His massive contract — and its salary-cap ramifications — has put the Browns in a bind in terms of trying to improve their roster. Cleveland has had a disappointing season after making the playoffs a year ago and could move on from Watson, but the cost would be exorbitant if the team just releases him. The Browns signed Jameis Winston for one season to be Watson's backup. Winston has gone 2-3 as a starter since taking over and he's put some life into Cleveland's offense, which didn't score 20 points or gain 300 yards with Watson before his injury. His 2023 season was ended by a broken bone in his shoulder, requiring surgery.
