30 jilibet Jimmy Carter, the peanut farmer who tried to restore virtue to the White House after the Watergate scandal and Vietnam War, then rebounded from a landslide defeat to become a global advocate of human rights and democracy, has died. He was 100 years old . The Carter Center said the 39th president died Sunday afternoon, more than a year after entering hospice care , at his home in Plains, Georgia, where he and his wife, Rosalynn, who died in November 2023, lived most of their lives. The center said he died peacefully, surrounded by his family. As reaction poured in from around the world, President Joe Biden mourned Carter’s death, saying the world lost an “extraordinary leader, statesman and humanitarian” and he lost a dear friend. Biden cited Carter’s compassion and moral clarity, his work to eradicate disease, forge peace, advance civil and human rights, promote free and fair elections, house the homeless and advocacy for the disadvantaged as an example for others. “To all of the young people in this nation and for anyone in search of what it means to live a life of purpose and meaning – the good life – study Jimmy Carter, a man of principle, faith, and humility,” Biden said in a statement. “He showed that we are a great nation because we are a good people – decent and honorable, courageous and compassionate, humble and strong.” Biden said he is ordering a state funeral for Carter in Washington. A moderate Democrat, Carter ran for president in 1976 as a little-known Georgia governor with a broad grin, effusive Baptist faith and technocratic plans for efficient government. His promise to never deceive the American people resonated after Richard Nixon’s disgrace and U.S. defeat in southeast Asia. “If I ever lie to you, if I ever make a misleading statement, don’t vote for me. I would not deserve to be your president,” Carter said. Carter’s victory over Republican Gerald Ford, whose fortunes fell after pardoning Nixon, came amid Cold War pressures, turbulent oil markets and social upheaval over race, women’s rights and America’s role in the world. His achievements included brokering Mideast peace by keeping Egyptian President Anwar Sadat and Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin at Camp David for 13 days in 1978. But his coalition splintered under double-digit inflation and the 444-day hostage crisis in Iran. His negotiations ultimately brought all the hostages home alive, but in a final insult, Iran didn’t release them until the inauguration of Ronald Reagan, who had trounced him in the 1980 election. Humbled and back home in Georgia, Carter said his faith demanded that he keep doing whatever he could, for as long as he could, to try to make a difference. He and Rosalynn co-founded The Carter Center in 1982 and spent the next 40 years traveling the world as peacemakers, human rights advocates and champions of democracy and public health. Awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002, Carter helped ease nuclear tensions in North and South Korea, avert a U.S. invasion of Haiti and negotiate cease-fires in Bosnia and Sudan. By 2022, the center had monitored at least 113 elections around the world. Carter was determined to eradicate guinea worm infections as one of many health initiatives. Swinging hammers into their 90s, the Carters built homes with Habitat for Humanity. The common observation that he was better as an ex-president rankled Carter. His allies were pleased that he lived long enough to see biographers and historians revisit his presidency and declare it more impactful than many understood at the time. Propelled in 1976 by voters in Iowa and then across the South, Carter ran a no-frills campaign. Americans were captivated by the earnest engineer, and while an election-year Playboy interview drew snickers when he said he “had looked on many women with lust. I’ve committed adultery in my heart many times,” voters tired of political cynicism found it endearing. The first family set an informal tone in the White House, carrying their own luggage, trying to silence the Marine Band’s traditional “Hail to the Chief" and enrolling daughter, Amy, in public schools. Carter was lampooned for wearing a cardigan and urging Americans to turn down their thermostats. But Carter set the stage for an economic revival and sharply reduced America's dependence on foreign oil by deregulating the energy industry along with airlines, trains and trucking. He established the departments of Energy and Education, appointed record numbers of women and nonwhites to federal posts, preserved millions of acres of Alaskan wilderness and pardoned most Vietnam draft evaders. Emphasizing human rights , he ended most support for military dictators and took on bribery by multinational corporations by signing the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act. He persuaded the Senate to ratify the Panama Canal treaties and normalized relations with China, an outgrowth of Nixon’s outreach to Beijing. But crippling turns in foreign affairs took their toll. When OPEC hiked crude prices, making drivers line up for gasoline as inflation spiked to 11%, Carter tried to encourage Americans to overcome “a crisis of confidence.” Many voters lost confidence in Carter instead after the infamous address that media dubbed his “malaise" speech, even though he never used that word. After Carter reluctantly agreed to admit the exiled Shah of Iran to the U.S. for medical treatment, the American Embassy in Tehran was overrun in 1979. Negotiations to quickly free the hostages broke down, and then eight Americans died when a top-secret military rescue attempt failed. Carter also had to reverse course on the SALT II nuclear arms treaty after the Soviets invaded Afghanistan in 1979. Though historians would later credit Carter's diplomatic efforts for hastening the end of the Cold war, Republicans labeled his soft power weak. Reagan’s “make America great again” appeals resonated, and he beat Carter in all but six states. Born Oct. 1, 1924, James Earl Carter Jr. married fellow Plains native Rosalynn Smith in 1946, the year he graduated from the Naval Academy. He brought his young family back to Plains after his father died, abandoning his Navy career, and they soon turned their ambitions to politics . Carter reached the state Senate in 1962. After rural white and Black voters elected him governor in 1970, he drew national attention by declaring that “the time for racial discrimination is over.” Carter published more than 30 books and remained influential as his center turned its democracy advocacy onto U.S. politics, monitoring an audit of Georgia’s 2020 presidential election results. After a 2015 cancer diagnosis, Carter said he felt “perfectly at ease with whatever comes.” “I’ve had a wonderful life,” he said. “I’ve had thousands of friends, I’ve had an exciting, adventurous and gratifying existence.”The Territory’s 25 best new cafes, bars and restaurants of 2024FIJI has one of the highest recorded rates of violence against women and girls, says Pacific Communities Principal Strategic Lead for Women and Girls, Mereseini Rakuita. She said statistics highlighted the severity of the issue. “Three of five women in the country suffer domestic violence,” she said. While speaking at the Fiji Women’s Criss Centre Office in Labasa yesterday, she said domestic violence among women in society was so common that it had become a norm. “This is deeply rooted in gender inequality, and we must address the underlying patriarchal systems that continue to perpetuate these harmful behaviours.” Ms Rakuita said efforts to combat violence against women and girls in Fiji must focus on dismantling these societal structures. “The key to ending violence is addressing gender inequality. “We must look at how power is structured, particularly through government systems, culture, religion, and the role of men in society.” She said real change would only happen if both men and women worked together to eliminate violence and create more equitable communities. “If we are serious about ending impunity, we need to mobilise as a nation. “We must harness the power of our social pillars such as government, culture, religion, and men to become leaders and advocates for gender equality.” The 16 Days of Activism Against Violence Against Women event started yesterday and will end on December 10.

With the Christmas season in full swing, the local stock market is seen to gather optimism from hopes of rates cuts by both the Federal Reserve and the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas this month. “The local market was able to bounce back last week and close at the 6,700 - 6,800 support range. This week, the market may continue to test the said range,” said Philstocks Financial Research Manager Japhet Tantiangco. He noted that, “The market could move with an upward bias amid hopes that the BSP will further ease monetary policy. This comes as inflation is seen to remain under control based on the latest figures.” “In addition, the local currency's appreciation against the US Dollar, if it continues, may give the market a boost. Investors are also expected to watch out for the US' upcoming November inflation numbers as this would give clues on the Federal Reserve's policy outlook,” Tantiangco said. Online brokerage 2TradeAsia.com said “A December Fed rate cut on the 18th is all but priced in by market globally-the surveyed probability for the US benchmark rate to be in the 4.25 percentto 4.5 percent range (implied 25bps cut) is over 70 percent as of this writing.” “Any outcome that is not this cut is likely to stymie rallies for the rest of the month, especially for risk assets whose growth stories for next year have been disrupted by more uncertain path towards neutral rates,” it added. 2TradeAsia.com said “It is interesting to note, in this season of looking ahead and repositioning into next year, that local equities, fundamentally, are in a position of strength relative to counterparts in developed markets, common headwinds notwithstanding. “For instance, where valuations have inflated globally, local equities have made little moves outside of their historical trading bands. Margins have also been relatively stable.” For stock picks, Abacus Securities Corporation is looking at Semirara Mining and Power Corporation favorably due to the recent decline in its share price although it will be better if it goes down further. This is because of the high probability the firm’s dividend payout will be maintained and the stock is thus a low-risk dividend play at this point.

Travis Kelce appears to get frustrated with Patrick Mahomes after missed catch in Chiefs vs Panthers READ MORE: Taylor Swift skips second straight Kansas City Chiefs game By ERIC BLUM Published: 21:54, 24 November 2024 | Updated: 22:01, 24 November 2024 e-mail View comments In a rare moment of dissatisfaction for his close friend, Travis Kelce showed obvious frustration with Patrick Mahomes after a missed throw and a catch against the Carolina Panthers . The Kansas City Chiefs were in for a much-tougher battle than expected with the Panthers, who had one of the league's worst records entering the matchup. On a usual route where Kelce stopped about 10 yards downfield, Mahomes throw to his open tight was a little off target, but not an impossible catch. The ball hits Kelce in the hands, but he could not hold onto it to complete the catch. As soon as the ball hits the turf, Kelce turns around and looks at Mahomes in frustration, throwing his arms out about the trajectory of the pass. Kelce continued to be frustrated as he got closer to the huddle, yelling an expletive on camera about the situation. Zilinskas scores 32 as IU Indianapolis downs Alabama A&M 88-83Fox News Flash top sports headlines are here. Check out what's clicking on Foxnews.com. The Dallas Cowboys defeated the Washington Commanders, 34-26, on Sunday in their Week 12 NFC East battle. And that’s probably the easiest way to describe what occurred in the game The score was 3-3 at halftime and Dallas took a 10-9 lead with 4:40 left in the third quarter when Cooper Rush found Jalen Tolbert for a 6-yard touchdown. It seemed like it was going to be a defensive battle with no real scoring going on for either team. Then, the fourth quarter happened. (AP Photo/Stephanie Scarbrough) The Cowboys took a 20-9 lead over the Commanders after Rush found tight end Luke Schoonmaker for a 22-yard touchdown. It seemed like it was enough for the Cowboys to close out the game as there was only 5:16 left. Jayden Daniels sparked a roaring comeback. He found Zach Ertz for a 4-yard touchdown pass to cut the deficit to three. Dallas struck back with a special teams play. Austin Seibert kicked the ball down the field. Returner KaVontae Turpin fumbled the ball initially, picked it up, made a spin move and then was gone. He galloped 99 yards for the score and the Cowboys had a 10-point lead. The Commanders drove down the field in six plays to set up Seibert for a 51-yard field goal. Dallas went three-and-out on its next possession. But inexplicably made a bad mistake on defense. Daniels found wide receiver Terry McLaurin and the veteran found space around Cowboys defenders and took the ball into the end zone. One play, 86 yards. Washington could have tied the game but Seibert missed the point-after attempt. The Commanders were down 27-26. Seibert tried the onside kick to recover it, but the ball bounced to Dallas player Juanyeh Thomas, who for some reason returned the ball 43 yards for a touchdown. It gave the Commanders one final drive. It would have been an even bigger calamity if Daniels found similar magic as he did against the Chicago Bears.
