According to a report by the New York Times, residents working for SpaceX filed an official petition with Cameron County to hold an election on incorporation this month. The document (seen by NYT) reveals initial plans for the city. If this city comes into existence, Musk will create history by doing something that no other company or business leader has ever done. What happens when Starbase comes into existence The Starbase plan remained stalled for years, partly due to Texas laws requiring a minimum number of residents and majority voter support to establish a new municipality. However, SpaceX employees have started settling into refurbished homes and temporary housing near the company's rocket launch site, the report claims. This month, these residents took a step toward creating a new city by filing a petition with Cameron County to hold an election, revealing initial details about Elon Musk's vision for the proposed municipality. If approved, the election would allow voters to select three city officials, including Gunnar Milburn, SpaceX's security manager, as the proposed first mayor. The petition outlines a community of roughly 500 residents, including 219 primary residents and over 100 children, located near Boca Chica Beach at the end of State Highway 4. Covering about 1.5 square miles, the proposed town is small by Texas standards. Most residents are renters and work for SpaceX. However, the petition does not mention why Musk and SpaceX employees are pursuing the creation of Starbase or what benefits they aim to achieve. The president pardoned Hunter Biden late Sunday evening, reversing his previous pledges with a grant of clemency that covers more than a decade of any federal crimes his son might have committed. The 82-year-old president said in a statement that his son’s prosecution on charges of tax evasion and falsifying a federal weapons purchase form were politically motivated. “He believes in the justice system, but he also believes that politics infected the process and led to a miscarriage of justice,” said White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre, who along with Biden and other White House officials insisted for months that Hunter Biden would not get a pardon. That explanation did not satisfy some Democrats, angry that Biden’s reversal could make it harder to take on Trump , who has argued that multiple indictments and one conviction against him were a matter of Biden and Democrats turning the justice system against him. “This is a bad precedent that could be abused by later Presidents and will sadly tarnish his reputation,” Colorado Gov. For a quarter of Americans, keeping their home clean is more difficult than their full-time job, according to a recent survey. The survey of 2,000 Americans looked at their cleaning habits and challenges, especially when it comes to hosting, and found that keeping a tidy house is harder than their nine-to-five for nearly one in four (24%). How Much Time People Spend Prepping for Guests When having guests over, people will spend an hour, on average, straightening up just before they arrive. Forty-one percent said they worry that guests will notice grimy nooks and crannies while they’re over and almost half (48%) confessed that they don’t notice how dirty their home is until they have guests over, but once company is in the house, they can’t unsee their cleaning blindspots. The majority (57%) disclosed that they’re embarrassed when visitors come over and their home is less clean than they’d like, and most (80%) admitted they want to impress their visitors with how tidy their house is. In fact, 29% went so far as to say they’d forgo buying new clothes for a year in exchange for a squeaky-clean home without any dust or grime and a third (34%) admitted that their social schedules revolve around their cleaning schedules. Conducted by Talker Research and commissioned by BISSELL for the launch of the Steam Shot OmniReach Handheld Steam Cleaner & Sanitizer, the study found that parents will spend four hours per week cleaning up their homes while non-parents will spend three hours doing so, on average. Uncovering a few of their cleaning blindspots, the study found the least-cleaned places in the house are window blinds (29%), baseboards (27%), fans (23%) and windowsills (24%). And although a quarter (24%) have yet to perfect their cleaning routine, 71% said it’s important to them to sanitize and clean their house without harsh chemicals. According to the results, it’s even more important to parents than non-parents (72% vs. 69%). Nearly a fifth of parents (19%) reported they already used all-natural cleaning products prior to having kids and another 38% said they began to do so after becoming parents. “The best cleaning session is fast, satisfying and effective,” said Vana Kokkinos, brand manager of steam cleaning at BISSELL. “If you haven’t perfected your cleaning routine already, start fresh in 2025 with tools that make the job a breeze. To help with this, look for cleaning brands and products that prioritize your time and health as much as you do, are environmentally friendly and can quickly eliminate germs and bacteria.” When deciding which cleaning products to use in the home, 83% of parents said the health of their children is a major consideration. Other motivators for selecting one cleaning product over another include the efficacy (92%), ability to kill germs and bacteria (90%), versatility (86%) and environmental impact of the product (68%) according to respondents. The Financial Cost of Ineffective Cleaning Products Uncovering the price tag on ineffective cleaning products, respondents estimated they’ve wasted more than $600 on useless cleaning products and tools over the years, on average. And although most people (59%) are planning to keep their homes cleaner than ever in the new year, 79% wish they had a cleaning magic wand to help them out. Add the sweet peppers and cook for another two to three minutes until softened. Add the minced sausage meat and cook until browned. Stir in the finely chopped cavolo nero and minced garlic, cooking until the garlic is fragrant. Sprinkle in the dried oregano and add the fresh basil. Pour in the passata, then dissolve the chicken stock cube in 300ml of water and add to the pan. Stir in the sugar and season with salt and pepper to taste. Simmer the sauce for five to 10 minutes, ensuring the liquid doesn’t reduce too much. In a bowl, mix 200g of sausage meat with 20g of grated Parmesan. Roll the mixture into sausage shapes that are thin enough to fit inside the cannelloni tubes. Wrap each sausage shape with a strip of streaky smoked bacon. Lightly brush the inside of each cannelloni tube with olive oil. Insert the wrapped sausage into each cannelloni tube using your hands. Preheat your oven to 180C (350F). Place the filled cannelloni tubes into the saucepan with the sauce, ensuring they are submerged. Transfer the mixture to an oven-safe baking dish. Tear one to two leaves of cavolo nero and some fresh basil over the top of the dish. Bake in the oven for around 30 minutes. Halfway through, use tongs to flip the cannelloni to keep them submerged in the sauce. Once baked, remove the dish from the oven and allow it to cool slightly. The 82-year-old president said in a statement that his son’s prosecution on charges of tax evasion and falsifying a federal weapons purchase form were politically motivated. “He believes in the justice system, but he also believes that politics infected the process and led to a miscarriage of justice,” said White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre, who along with Biden and other White House officials insisted for months that Hunter Biden would not get a pardon . That explanation did not satisfy some Democrats, angry that Biden’s reversal could make it harder to take on Trump , who has argued that multiple indictments and one conviction against him were a matter of Biden and Democrats turning the justice system against him. “This is a bad precedent that could be abused by later Presidents and will sadly tarnish his reputation,” Colorado Gov. Jared Polis wrote of Biden on the social media platform X. “When you become President, your role is Pater familias of the nation,” the governor continued, a reference to the president invoking fatherhood in explaining his decision. “Hunter brought the legal trouble he faced on himself, and one can sympathize with his struggles while also acknowledging that no one is above the law, not a President and not a President’s son.” Rep. Greg Stanton, D-Ariz., said on X: “This wasn’t a politically motivated prosecution. Hunter committed felonies and was convicted by a jury of his peers.” Colorado Sen. Michael Bennet said Biden “put personal interest ahead of duty” with a decision that “further erodes Americans’ faith that the justice system is fair and equal for all.” Michigan Sen. Gary Peters said the pardon was “an improper use of power” that erodes faith in government and “emboldens others to bend justice to suit their interests.” Sen. Peter Welch, D-Vt., called the pardon “understandable” if viewed only as the “action of a loving father.” But Biden's status as “our nation's Chief Executive," the senator said, rendered the move “unwise.” Certainly, the president has Democratic defenders who note Trump’s use of presidential power to pardon a slew of his convicted aides, associates and friends, several for activities tied to Trump’s campaign and first administration. “Trump pardoned Roger Stone, Steve Bannon, Michael Flynn and Paul Manafort, as well as his son-in-law’s father, Charles Kushner — who he just appointed US ambassador to France,” wrote prominent Democratic fundraiser Jon Cooper on X. Democratic National Committee Chairman Jaime Harrison said there “is no standard for Donald Trump, and the highest standard for Democrats and Joe Biden.” Harrison pointed to Trump's apparent plans to oust FBI Director Christopher Wray and replace him with loyalist Kash Patel and suggested the GOP's pursuit of Hunter Biden would not have ended without clemency. “Most people will see that Joe Biden did what was right,” Harrison said. First lady Jill Biden said Monday from the White House, “Of course I support the pardon of my son.” Democrats already are facing the prospects of a Republican trifecta in Washington, with voters returning Trump to the White House and giving the GOP control of the House and Senate. Part of their argument against Trump and Republican leaders is expected to be that the president-elect is violating norms with his talk of taking retribution against his enemies. Before beating Vice President Kamala Harris, Trump faced his own legal troubles, including two cases that stemmed from his efforts to overturn his defeat to Joe Biden in the 2020 presidential election. Those cases, including Trump’s sentencing after being convicted on New York state business fraud charges, have either been dismissed or indefinitely delayed since Trump’s victory on Nov. 5, forcing Democrats to recalibrate their approach to the president-elect. In June, President Biden firmly ruled out a pardon or commutation for his son, telling reporters as his son faced trial in the Delaware gun case: “I abide by the jury decision. I will do that and I will not pardon him.” As recently as Nov. 8, days after Trump’s victory, Jean-Pierre ruled out a pardon or clemency for the younger Biden, saying: “We’ve been asked that question multiple times. Our answer stands, which is no.” The president’s about-face came weeks before Hunter Biden was set to receive his punishment after his trial conviction in the gun case and guilty plea on tax charges. It capped a long-running legal saga for the younger Biden, who disclosed he was under federal investigation in December 2020 — a month after his father’s 2020 victory. The sweeping pardon covers not just the gun and tax offenses against the younger Biden, but also any other “offenses against the United States which he has committed or may have committed or taken part in during the period from January 1, 2014, through December 1, 2024.” Hunter Biden was convicted in June in Delaware federal court of three felonies for purchasing a gun in 2018 when , prosecutors said, he lied on a federal form by claiming he was not illegally using or addicted to drugs. He had been set to stand trial in September in a California case accusing him of failing to pay at least $1.4 million in taxes. But he agreed to plead guilty to misdemeanor and felony charges in a surprise move hours after jury selection was set to begin. In his statement Sunday, the president argued that such offenses typically are not prosecuted with the same vigor as was directed against Hunter Biden. “The charges in his cases came about only after several of my political opponents in Congress instigated them to attack me and oppose my election,” Biden said in his statement. “No reasonable person who looks at the facts of Hunter’s cases can reach any other conclusion than Hunter was singled out only because he is my son. ...
