In a recent development, Barcelona is set to receive approximately 2.65 million euros in compensation from FIFA due to the long-term injury sustained by defender Ronald Araujo. The Uruguayan center-back has been sidelined for an extended period, raising concerns over the financial impact on the club. However, FIFA's decision to provide compensation comes as a relief to Barcelona, helping to alleviate some of the financial strain caused by Araujo's absence.
A massacre of more than 200 people in Haiti this month followed a gang-ordered manhunt that saw victims, many of them elderly, pulled from their homes and shot or killed with machetes, the UN said Monday. The victims were suspected of involvement in voodoo and accused by a gang leader of poisoning his child, with the suspects taken to a "training center" where many were dismembered or burned after being killed. A civil society organization had said at the time that the gang leader was convinced his son's illness was caused by followers of the religion. "On the evening of December 6, (Micanor Altes) ordered the members of his gang -- around 300 -- to carry out a brutal 'manhunt.' They stormed into about ten alleys of the (Port-au-Prince) neighborhood and forcibly dragged the victims out of their homes," said the report, authored jointly by the UN office in Haiti, BINUH, and the UN Human Rights Commissioner (OCHR). In the days that followed, the gang returned to the neighborhood, abducting adherents from a voodoo temple, targeting individuals suspected of tipping off local media and slaughtering people seeking to escape. Some of the bodies "were then burned with gasoline, or dismembered and dumped into the sea," the report concluded. A total of 134 men and 73 women were killed in total over six days, the report said. A mosaic of violent gangs control most of the Haitian capital Port-au-Prince. The impoverished Caribbean country has been mired for decades by political instability, made worse in recent years by gangs that have grown in strength and organizational sophistication. Despite a Kenyan-led police support mission, backed by the United States and UN, violence has continued to soar. "According to BINUH and OHCHR, since January 2024, more than 5,358 people have been killed and 2,155 injured," the report said. "This brings the total number of people killed or injured in Haiti to at least 17,248 since the beginning of 2022." The UN Security Council "strongly condemned the continued destabilizing criminal activities of armed gangs and stressed the need for the international community to redouble its efforts to provide humanitarian assistance to the population." A spokeswoman for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said "these crimes touched the very foundation of Haitian society, targeting the most vulnerable populations." Voodoo was brought to Haiti by African slaves and is a mainstay of the country's culture. It was banned during French colonial rule and only recognized as an official religion by the Haitian government in 2003. While it incorporates elements of other religious beliefs, including Catholicism, voodoo has been historically attacked by other religions. gw/nro
In a recent move that has caught many users by surprise, Tencent Video announced significant changes to their membership plans, seeing the reduction of options from 5 to 3 and 2 to 1 for certain subscription levels. This decision has undoubtedly led to a "shrinking" of benefits for users, sparking debates and discussions across social media platforms. The issue of immigration has long been a contentious and divisive issue in American politics, and Trump's continued advocacy for harsh immigration policies only serves to amplify these divisions. As the debate over immigration continues to unfold, it is important for policymakers and citizens to engage in constructive dialogue and seek solutions that balance the competing interests at stake.Title: Gaode Maps and Lenovo BaiYing Launch One-Click Access to Professional Computer ServicesMangaluru: With the advent of artificial intelligence , we are exceedingly well-connected with the world; nevertheless, paradoxically, we are experiencing profound isolation, said Govindan Rangarajan, director, Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru. He was addressing the 22nd Convocation Ceremony (morning session) of the National Institute of Technology Karnataka Surathkal, on Saturday. In his address, he focussed on artificial intelligence and its influence, which has gained paramount importance in contemporary times. After elaborating on the advantageous aspects of AI, he discussed how this technology is affecting the social dynamics of individuals. "We all are connected to the world with smartphones but have forfeited our capability to interact with our friends and families offline. This is a substantial ramification of technology and AI. Social media and algorithms fabricate an illusion of connectivity, whilst research indicates escalating solitude. Families frequently gather yet engage with devices rather than each other," he said. "Secondly, AI has influenced one's perception of truth. We may revert to believing solely what we personally witness. However, with the proliferation of deepfake, AI mimic, and others, this notion is disputable now. AI mimic can deceive a person into believing they are conversing with their distressed child over the phone. But the actuality differs. Even empathy, traditionally a human characteristic, can be replicated by AI trained on human experiences. Rangarajan added that studies demonstrate AI-generated messages being perceived as more empathetic than doctors' empathetic messages to patients," he said. "The counsel is to cherish human relationships, sustain direct family connections beyond social media, and cultivate creativity and critical thinking. These competencies will distinguish humans in an AI-dominant world," he told the young graduands. "Some experts consider it as revolutionary as the discovery of fire in human history. There is a tendency to overstate technology's immediate effects whilst underestimating its long-term influence. AI will significantly influence our activities. AI's influence extends to laboratory automation in Liverpool, potentially affecting chemistry students' traditional roles. Similarly, AI impacts coding, particularly entry-level programming, offering faster, more cost-effective solutions than human programmers," he said. Hence, he asked the graduates to shift focus towards these abilities rather than basic coding. "Even chip design, with its countless configurations, now benefits from AI's superior capabilities in component placement and operational design," he added.

By Sinéad Carew and Amanda Cooper NEW YORK/LONDON (Reuters) -A global equity index rose on Monday with help from Wall Street, and U.S. Treasury yields climbed to an almost seven-month high while data showed a deterioration in U.S. consumer confidence and investors prepared for fewer Federal Reserve rate cuts in 2025. In U.S. equities, Nasdaq and the S&P 500 were boosted mostly by rallies in megacap technology stocks such as Nvidia Corp and Broadcom Inc. Earlier, the Conference Board said its U.S. consumer confidence index weakened in December to 104.7 versus economist expectations for an increase to 113.3 and November’s upwardly revised 112.8 on concerns about future business conditions. While new orders for key U.S.-manufactured capital goods rose in November amid strong demand for machinery, orders of durable goods, ranging from toasters to aircraft, dropped 1.1% after increasing 0.8% in October, with declines mostly reflecting weakness in commercial aircraft orders. Citing weak consumer confidence as a key negative for equities on Monday, Robert Phipps, a director at Per Stirling Capital Management, highlighted the 10-year Treasury yield’s jump to its highest level since late May. “It’s important for equity investors that the 4.6% level holds for 10-year Treasury yields and if we break above it there’s a risk the market will go ahead and test 5%,” he said, pointing to a slowing in Fed rate cuts as the reason. “The market is adjusting to a less dovish Fed policy,” said Phipps, noting U.S. indexes looked weaker under the hood besides the rallies in heavyweight stocks. “It is a deceptively strong market,” he said. On Wall Street, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 66.69 points, or 0.16%, to 42,906.95, the S&P 500 rose 43.22 points, or 0.73%, to 5,974.07 and the Nasdaq Composite rose 192.29 points, or 0.98%, to 19,764.89. MSCI’s gauge of stocks across the globe rose 5.51 points, or 0.65%, to 849.74 while earlier, Europe’s STOXX 600 index finished up 0.14%. Ahead of Tuesday’s shorter trading day and Wednesday’s market close for Christmas, Tim Ghriskey, senior portfolio strategist at Ingalls & Snyder said investors still had last Wednesday’s steep sell-off on their minds after the Fed clearly signalled for fewer rate cuts next year. “There’s concern about the economy. There’s concern about the Fed making a wrong move and there’s the great unknown of what Trump is actually going to do,” said Ghriskey, referring to U.S. President-elect Donald Trump’s Jan. 20 inauguration. In U.S. Treasuries, 10-year yields hit their highest level since late May as the Treasury Department this week sells short- and intermediate-dated debt. The yield on benchmark U.S. 10-year notes rose 6.7 basis points to 4.591%, from 4.524% late on Friday, while the 30-year bond yield rose 6.3 basis points to 4.7791%. A $69 billion two-year notes sale was met with healthy demand on Monday for the first auction of $183 billion in coupon-bearing supply this week. The 2-year note yield, which typically moves in step with interest rate expectations for the Fed, rose 3 basis points to 4.342%, from 4.312% late on Friday. In currencies, the dollar rebounded while the euro fell as recent global central bank meetings set expectations for diverging rate cut paths in the year ahead. The dollar index, measuring the greenback against a basket of major currencies, rose 0.27% to 108.08. The euro was down 0.22% at $1.0406 and against the Japanese yen, the dollar strengthened 0.45% to 157.12. Elsewhere, Sterling weakened 0.31% to $1.253 and Mexico’s peso weakened 0.6% versus the dollar. Oil prices settled down slightly in thin trade before the holiday with concerns about a supply surplus next year and a strengthened dollar. [O/R] U.S. crude settled down 0.32%, or 22 cents at $69.24 a barrel and Brent fell to $72.63 per barrel, down 0.43%, or 31 cents on the day. Gold prices edged lower in subdued holiday-season trading, weighed by a robust dollar and high U.S. Treasury yields. Spot gold fell 0.39% to $2,610.66 an ounce. U.S. gold futures fell 0.67% to $2,611.10 an ounce. BOULDER, Colo. — A 72-year-old lifelong Colorado fan with end-stage kidney failure waited to the side of the field in his wheelchair for Travis Hunter and the rest of the Buffaloes. One by one, players strolled over and signed a football for Riley Rhoades, his face lighting up with each signature. Standing close by and taking in the scene was Jeremy Bloom. He's become a wish facilitator for older adults. Bloom, the former Colorado wide receiver and Olympic freestyle skier, started the Wish of a Lifetime foundation in 2008, which has made thousands of aspirations turn into reality for older adults. The list of granted wishes range from taking veterans back to the beaches of Normandy to helping late-in-life authors publish a book. He's staged concerts for musicians, assisted some in daredevil feats such as jumping out of an airplane and even lined up a meeting between an Olympic medalist and former President Barack Obama. For Rhoades, his wish was simply to return to Folsom Field again, the place where he used to have season tickets but hasn't attended a game since 2004. "Everybody has somebody in their life —a grandparent, friend, neighbor — at that age where you wish you had more resources to help," said Bloom, whose college career was cut short two decades ago when the NCAA denied his reinstatement to play football and still ski professionally after receiving endorsement money to fuel his Olympic dreams. "Nothing can compare to seeing someone else's eyes light up because you helped make their dream come true." Granting wishes The foundation is a tribute to his grandparents. But the concept began to take root when he was a teenager. He was in Japan for a World Cup freestyle skiing competition when a woman tried to hop on a crowded bus. There was no room, but everyone in front rose from their seats to make space. That stuck with him, along with seeing these acts of kindness for older adults all over Europe and Asia as he traveled. An idea formed — bring that same level of appreciation to the United States, with a wish-granting element. Bloom's organization has been a charitable affiliate of AARP since 2020. Special moment It was the yearning of Rhoades that brought the two of them to Folsom Field last weekend. Rhoades, who had season tickets at Colorado for 27 years, wanted to see the Buffaloes in person after watching the team's resurgence on television. A few years ago, Rhoades, who was born with spina bifida, was diagnosed with end-stage renal failure. Being among the 54,646 fans Saturday stirred up plenty of emotions for Rhoades, as he watched the 16th-ranked Buffaloes (8-2, 6-1 Big 12, No. 16 CFP) beat Utah. Colorado remains in the race for not only a conference title but a spot in the College Football Playoff. "It's just great to be back here again," Rhoades said as he pointed out the section where he used to watch games. "It's just ... so cool." For Bloom, the success that coach Deion Sanders has brought to the program means more reunions with teammates as they pass through town. "I've been through many years where nobody comes to visit," Bloom said. "It's fun that Boulder has become the epicenter of college football." Paying athletes Leading the way for Colorado this season have been quarterback Shedeur Sanders and two-way star Hunter, who's the Heisman Trophy frontrunner. But what particularly pleases Bloom is that Sanders, Hunter and the rest of college football players are able to finally profit through name, image and likeness. In his day, Bloom got caught in the NCAA crosshairs for wanting to play both sports and to have sponsors in one (skiing) so he could fund his Olympic aspirations. How time have changed. "I'm just really grateful that this generation of athletes gets to monetize their skills and ability," said Bloom, who finished sixth in moguls at the 2006 Winter Games in Italy. "It's the right thing." He's thrown his passion into fulfilling wishes such as learning ballet, riding in a Formula 1 pace car or taking a flight in a fighter jet. He's also helped reconnect families and friends, including a reunion for a trio of centenarian sisters who hadn't seen each other in more than a decade. This granted wish has stuck with Bloom: A person in Alabama wasn't able to travel after being diagnosed with end-of-life emphysema. So he asked for postcards to be sent, just to learn what made someone's town so special. He received 2,000 postcards from 26 different countries. "There's no end to the things that they've done for us in the world," Bloom said of older adults. "We're one of the organizations that reminds them that their dreams still do matter and that we still appreciate them and we cherish them."
