(AP) — California, home to some of the largest technology companies in the world, would be the first U.S. state to require mental health warning labels on social media sites if lawmakers pass a bill introduced Monday. The legislation sponsored by state Attorney General Rob Bonta is necessary to bolster safety for children online, supporters say, but industry officials vow to fight the measure and others like it under the First Amendment. Warning labels for social media gained swift bipartisan support from dozens of attorneys general, including Bonta, after U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy called on Congress to establish the requirements earlier this year, saying social media is a contributing factor in the mental health crisis among young people. “These companies know the harmful impact their products can have on our children, and they refuse to take meaningful steps to make them safer,” Bonta said at a news conference Monday. “Time is up. It’s time we stepped in and demanded change.” State officials haven’t provided details on the bill, but Bonta said the warning labels could pop up once weekly. Up to 95% of youth ages 13 to 17 say they use a social media platform, and more than a third say that they use social media “almost constantly,” according to 2022 data from the Pew Research Center. Parents’ concerns prompted Australia to pass the world’s first law banning social media for children under 16 in November. “The promise of social media, although real, has turned into a situation where they’re turning our children’s attention into a commodity,” Assemblymember Rebecca Bauer-Kahan, who authored the California bill, said Monday. “The attention economy is using our children and their well-being to make money for these California companies.” Lawmakers instead should focus on online safety education and mental health resources, not warning label bills that are “constitutionally unsound,” said Todd O’Boyle, a vice president of the tech industry policy group Chamber of Progress. “We strongly suspect that the courts will set them aside as compelled speech,” O’Boyle told The Associated Press. Victoria Hinks’ 16-year-old daughter, Alexandra, died by suicide four months ago after being “led down dark rabbit holes” on social media that glamorized eating disorders and self-harm. Hinks said the labels would help protect children from companies that turn a blind eye to the harm caused to children’s mental health when they become addicted to social media platforms. “There’s not a bone in my body that doubts social media played a role in leading her to that final, irreversible decision,” Hinks said. “This could be your story.” Related Articles National News | Biden creates Native American boarding school national monument to mark era of forced assimilation National News | ‘Polarization’ is Merriam-Webster’s 2024 word of the year National News | Supreme Court rejects appeal challenging Hawaii gun licensing requirements under Second Amendment National News | Supreme Court rejects appeal from Boston parents over race bias in elite high school admissions National News | Supreme Court rejects Wisconsin parents’ challenge to school guidance for transgender students Common Sense Media, a sponsor of the bill, said it plans to lobby for similar proposals in other states. California in the past decade has positioned itself as a leader in regulating and fighting the tech industry to bolster online safety for children. The state was the first in 2022 to bar online platforms from using users’ personal information in ways that could harm children. It was one of the states that sued Meta in 2023 and TikTok in October for deliberately designing addictive features that keep kids hooked on their platforms. Gov. Gavin Newsom, a Democrat, also signed several bills in September to help curb the effects of social media on children, including one to prohibit social media platforms from knowingly providing addictive feeds to children without parental consent and one to limit or ban students from using smartphones on school campus. Federal lawmakers have held hearings on child online safety and legislation is in the works to force companies to take reasonable steps to prevent harm. The legislation has the support of X owner Elon Musk and the President-elect’s son, Donald Trump Jr . Still, the last federal law aimed at protecting children online was enacted in 1998, six years before Facebook’s founding.

(AP) — Trailing by one at the 40-yard line with 14 seconds to play and no timeouts, Illinois coach Bret Bielema sent in a play known as “church” to Luke Altmyer. The quarterback was to hit a receiver who was to go to the ground immediately. The offense would rush to the line of scrimmage and Altmyer would spike the ball to set up a potential winning field goal. Pat Bryant caught the pass at the 22 and then called his own split-second audible. Seeing a path to the end zone, the star receiver ran across the field on the way to the winning touchdown with 4 seconds left, sending the Illini to a wild 38-31 victory over Rutgers on Saturday. “Coach called a perfect play,” Bryant said. “A play we run all the time in our two-minute drill. I caught the ball and saw the sideline and saw nobody was over there. I had one guy to beat. I gave him a little move. I heard everybody jump and say ’Get out, get out,’ but I put trust in myself and scored a touchdown.” Bryant’s ninth TD reception of the season capped a roller-coaster finish to a Big Ten game that featured three lead changes in the final 3:07. Rutgers coach Greg Schiano called for a timeout right before Moczulski’s attempt was wide left and about 15 yards short. After the missed field goal was waved off by the timeout, Bielema sent his offense back on the field. “Pat is so aware of his surroundings,” Bielema said after Bryant finished with seven catches for a career-high 197 yards. “He saw that corner and took off.” Schiano didn’t second-guess his timeout but said he should have called it well before Moczulski kicked. “They made one more play than we did,” Schiano said. Rutgers (6-5, 3-5) gave up a safety on the final kickoff return, throwing a ball out of bounds in the end zone as players passed it around hoping for a miracle touchdown. Altmyer was 12-of-26 passing for 249 yards and two touchdowns. He put Illinois in front with a 30-yard TD run with 3:07 to go. He passed to Josh McCray on the 2-point conversion, making it 30-24. Rutgers responded with a 10-play, 65-yard drive. Athan Kaliakmanis had a 15-yard run on fourth down. He passed to running back Kyle Monangai for a 13-yard TD with 1:08 remaining. Illinois then drove 75 yards in eight plays for the win. “That’s big-time football,” Monangai said. “They made a great play at the end of the game. I think we we played our hearts out to the end, to the very end, even that last play. Illinois did the same. They’re a great team. The chips fell their way today.” Kaliakmanis was 18 for 36 for 174 yards and two touchdowns. He also had 13 carries for 84 yards and two TDs. Monangai had a career-high 28 carries for 122 yards. Kaliakmanis found Ian Strong for a 2-yard touchdown in the final seconds of the first half, and he scored on a 1-yard run to lift Rutgers to a 24-15 lead early in the fourth quarter. Illinois responded with Aidan Laughery’s 8-yard TD run, setting the stage for the dramatic finish. The start of the second half was delayed because of a scrum between the teams. There were no punches thrown and the officials called penalties on both schools. Monangai’s day Monangai become the third player in Rutgers history to rush for 3,000 yards when he picked up 4 on a third-and-1 carry early in the second quarter. The defending conference rushing champion joins Ray Rice and Terrell Willis in hitting the mark. The takeaway Illinois: The great finish keeps the Illini in line for its first nine-win season since 2007 and a prestigious bowl game this season. Rutgers: The Scarlet Knights were seconds away from their first in-conference three-game win streak since joining the Big Ten in 2014. Up next Illinois: At Northwestern next Saturday. The Seattle Seahawks have announced three roster moves heading into tomorrow's monster matchup with the Arizona Cardinals, which has the potential to crown a new leader in the NFC West race. The major headline is that strong safety Rayshawn Jenkins has been activated from the injured reserve list. Jenkins had performed well during the first six games of the season. However, he's been sidelined over the last month due to a hand injury. While Jenkins has been out the Seahawks have gotten a pleasant surprise in his stead. Third-year defensive back Coby Bryant has switched to safety full-time and took Jenkins' place in the starting lineup next to free safety Julian Love. Bryant had struggled awfully in coverage his first two years in the NFL, but he's taken some strides and made several huge stops over the last few weeks. For the season Bryant has only allowed a 60% completion rate (down from 92.9% last year) and a 75.7 passer rating. He's only given up one touchdown so far as the nearest defender. That means head coach Mike Macdonald has an interesting decision to make with regards to the starting lineup tomorrow. Up until these last few weeks it would have been an no-brainer to start Jenkins over Bryant, but now it could go either way. The Seahawks have also elevated tight end Tyler Mabry and inside linebacker Patrick O'Connell from the practice squad for tomorrow's game. ozgurdonmaz Listen below or on the go on Apple Podcasts and Spotify This is an abridged transcript of the podcast. Our top story so far. Morgan Stanley says Apple ( AAPL ) remains its top pick heading into 2025 , and the firm maintained its overweight rating and $273 price target. Analyst Erik Woodring said they're still bullish on Apple Intelligence accelerating iPhone replacement cycles starting in fiscal 2026, double-digit services growth, and gross margins expanding. The Overweight thesis is that Apple is on the cusp of its largest device upgrade cycle ever, as the launch—and limited backward compatibility—of Apple Intelligence improves upgrade cycles and new user acquisition and accelerates replacement cycles. This should result in a record-breaking fiscal 2025/fiscal 2026 cycle that is underappreciated by the market today. All of this should lead to Apple earnings around $8.52 per share in fiscal 2026, about 4% above consensus, he said. Apple has outperformed the S&P 500 by 10 points over the last month, with the tech giant now trading at all-time highs. While the recent outperformance may be linked to market factors and short covering, the analysts are still bullish on Apple's ability to drive over $8.50 of earnings power in fiscal 2026, which they think is also a factor helping to support near-term outperformance. Woodring said they discussed five key topics with investors and are bullish on Apple Intelligence starting to accelerate iPhone replacement cycles in fiscal 2026, limited risk to China import tariffs, sustained double-digit services growth, and potential for further iPhone gross margin upside. Looking to the economy. S&P Global's U.S. Composite PMI rose to 56.6 in December's flash estimate from 54.9 in November. That indicates the fastest expansion of business activity since March 2022 amid strength in the services economy but further deterioration in manufacturing production. A rise in service sector activity (services PMI: 56.6 vs. 55.1 consensus and 54.9 prior) contrasted with a steeper fall in manufacturing production (manufacturing PMI: 48.3 vs. 49.4 expected and 49.7 prior). Chris Williamson, chief business economist at S&P Global Market Intelligence, said: "The service sector expansion is helping drive overall growth in the economy to its fastest for nearly three years, consistent with GDP rising at an annualized rate of just over 3% in December." Among active stocks. J.P. Morgan upgraded Okta ( OKTA ) to Overweight from Neutral, noting that the company is well positioned for increased demand. Analyst Brian Essex said Okta reset expectations with a conservative initial look at fiscal 2026 revenue growth this quarter, and now the risk/reward is attractive as they see Identity moving up the priority stack. Honeywell ( HON ) said its board continues to explore additional strategic alternatives, including the potential separation of its aerospace business . The board has made significant progress, and the company plans to provide an update when it reports Q4 results, it said. Activist investor Elliott Investment Management, which has called for a split of Honeywell's aerospace and automation businesses after taking a $5 billion-plus stake in the company in November, praised the move. And Super Micro Computer ( SMCI ) is the biggest decliner in the S&P after news that it is looking to raise capital and would be replaced in the Nasdaq 100 ( QQQ ). In other news of note. “Kraven the Hunter,” the latest Spider-Man spinoff, flopped at the box office this weekend while “Moana 2” finished at the top for the third straight weekend. “Kraven,” featuring Spider-Man’s nemesis, made just $11 million in its opening days, well below “Moana 2,” which earned $26.6 million, and “Wicked,” which brought in $22 million in its fourth weekend to take second position. “Gladiator II” added $7.8 million in its fourth weekend to finish in fourth place. “Red One,” which made $4.6 million, finished out the top five. And in the Wall Street Research Corner. Bank of America issued its call for next year's top semiconductor stocks , with the list including some of the usual heavyweights. Nvidia ( NVDA ), Broadcom ( AVGO ), and Marvell Technology ( MRVL ) are on the list, as are Lam Research ( LRCX ), On Semiconductor ( ON ), and Cadence Design Systems ( CDNS ). Analyst Vivek Arya says, "We see 2025 as a year of two different trends.” “In the first half, AI investments and NVDA Blackwell deployments driven by US cloud customers sustain momentum in AI semis. However, in the second half, interest could shift to less-crowded auto/industrial chipmakers on inventory replenishment and pick-up in auto production, assuming a global economic recovery." Overall, sales are forecast to grow 15% to $725 billion in 2025, a "strong pace," albeit a decline from the 20% growth seen this year, Arya added. Nvidia, Broadcom, and Marvell should benefit from AI exposure, while Lam Research should benefit from the spending recovery in flash memory and China. On Semi is poised to benefit from the "eventual" recovery in the automotive and electric vehicle space (likely in the second half of the year), while Cadence is the leader in the electronic design automation space.Nico Iamaleava throws 4 TD passes to lead No. 10 Tennessee over UTEP 56-0

Xavier aims to rebound from a tough week and get one more critical tune-up for a rivalry matchup when it hosts Morgan State on Tuesday night in Cincinnati. The Musketeers (7-2) were ranked No. 22 in the AP poll two weeks ago but fell out after a 25-point loss to Michigan in the Fort Myers Tip-Off tournament final on Nov. 27. Xavier then barely escaped with a 71-68 home win over South Carolina State on Dec. 1 before losing 76-72 at TCU on Thursday. Dante Maddox Jr. came off the bench to score nine points in 20 minutes on three 3-pointers against the Horned Frogs. He also grabbed six rebounds before fouling out. The Musketeers have been waiting for the Toledo transfer to add a punch to an underwhelming bench cast that many thought would be a strength for Xavier coming into the season. "I really feel like you can almost be baited into a false sense of how deep your team is because you're around guys every day and have a good, older group, which we do," Musketeers coach Sean Miller said. "You see the good in a lot of different guys. It's not until you get 8 to 10, 10 to 15 games in when you truly understand how deep your team is." Maddox hit a 3-pointer and started a fastbreak with a steal that gave Xavier a 60-54 lead with 7:28 remaining, but the Musketeers faded down the stretch and lost for the second time in three games. Maddox is averaging 4.7 points per game, while Ryan Conwell leads the team with 16.6. Tuesday's game will be the last chance for Xavier to straighten up before visiting No. 22 Cincinnati on Saturday for the teams' annual intense crosstown showdown. Morgan State (5-7) is coming off a 102-81 road loss at Bowling Green on Saturday. Preseason All-MEAC First Team selection Will Thomas led the Bears with 19 points on 8-of-15 shooting from the field, while Kameron Hobbs scored 12 points off the bench. Amahrie Simpkins made all five of his field-goal attempts to add 11 points and Wynston Tabbs had 10 points, six rebounds and six assists. Tabbs leads Morgan State in scoring this season at 16.8 points per game, while Simpkins (12.8) and Thomas (12.2) round out the Bears' double-digit scorers. The Bears have struggled away from home, losing all five road contests this season. --Field Level Media
How Trump's new FTC chair views AI, Big Tech. NEW DELHI: With incidents of sexual harassment of women workers/members of political parties often hushed up, SC on Monday asked the Election Commission to examine whether registered political parties could be brought under the ambit of Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013. Appearing for advocate-petitioner Yogamaya G, senior advocate Shobha Gupta told a bench of Justices Surya Kant and Manmohan that though many women are active members of political parties, only CPM has set up an internal complaint committee with external members. AAP lacks transparency about its committee, while BJP and Congress have admitted not having an adequate ICC structure mandated under law, the petitioner alleged, while demanding the law must apply in equal rigour to parties which owe allegiance to the Constitution that mandates protection of dignity of women. The bench said the petitioner's analogy to equate political parties as employers and workers/members as employees may not be apt, but agreed that this is an important issue that should be adjudicated by EC. SC told the petitioner that if she does not receive any satisfactory response from EC on the issue raised by her, she is free to approach court again. The PIL quoted a 2014 NDTV article titled 'Congress seeks security for Nagma, winks at party leader who kissed her', which narrated an incident of a Congress member publicly kissing the actress who was seen walking off without addressing a rally. Quoting a report from Ranjana Kumar's organisation, Centre for Social Research, published in Economic Times, it said, "Nearly 50% respondents said they faced verbal abuse and 45% said physical violence and threats were common, particularly true during election campaigns. Sixty-seven per cent of women politicians said perpetrators were male contestants and 58% party colleagues. Violence and harassment at the hands of colleagues is a reason why we see only women from political families in politics." Interestingly, in March 2022, Kerala HC ruled that political parties are under no compulsion to establish internal complaints committees, as mandated by the 2013 law, since parties lack the employee-employer relationships.
