A group which tagged itself the Niger Delta Liberation Movement otherwise known as Movement, has claimed responsibility for bursting several pipelines along the Olero-Dibi-Abiteye Fields/Flow stations at about 2am on Friday. The group described the damage as “the launch of ‘Operation Chevron Dragnet”. This was contained in a press statement signed by the Secretary of NDLM, Mr. Emmanuel Tagbanaraewumi, which was made available to journalists in Warri on Friday. The statement partly reads, “Movement begins ‘Chevron Dragnet’: bursts pipelines along Olero-Dibi-Abiteye Fields in Delta. “The blast pipelines, which are six inches, eight inches, and 10 inches in diameter, transport various petroleum products, such as natural gas and crude. “These multiple blasts are the start of the operations code-named Chevron Dragnet. “We promise a shocker as we vow to continue to hit facilities used for crude oil exploration activities in the whole of Warri areas, till Chevron does the needful as this is just the beginning of operation Chevron Dragnet.” Related News Delta court begins bearing on alleged trafficking of 15-year-old girl by mother Delta firm celebrates Olu of Warri, Olori on 10th anniversary Delta donates 31 vehicles to boost police, security operations The group claimed that several host communities and organisations from the Itsekiri extraction, had called upon Chevron Nigeria Limited to make available its employment quota in the firm’s ongoing recruitment scheme, but to no avail. It added, “We had earlier made demands for the unconditional conversion of VTP5/OTP2 and VTP6 amongst others and these demands were not attended to. “The Movement is bringing to the notice of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited and Chevron in particular, that we are in support of these calls and therefore announce the launch of an operation Chevron Dragnet. “The operation Chevron Dragnet has become unavoidable, because Chevron had refused to listen to her host communities and organizations from the Itsekiri extraction, calling for the implementation of Local Content Law and allocate to her the rightful quarter of the ongoing Chevron Nigeria Limited recruitment by a consulting firm known as dragnet. “Recall how we claimed responsibility for several attacks against oil facilities in the Warri area since July 2023. Our biggest feast, was the Dibi to Olero Gas Line Blast at Junction 19 on June 18, 2024. “Through the disruption of all oil exploration activity, we pledge to communicate with Chevron in their own language. “We will not provide any ultimatum or timeline for the operations, as was evident in our previous press statements. As long as Chevron decides to keep mute and play unholy politics with the request from the host communities and organizations of the Itsekiri nation, we vow to support and back these calls with the language Chevron will understand.”Wake Forest still experimenting ahead of Detroit Mercy game

The company that has described itself as North America’s largest bookkeeping service for small businesses says on its website in a “notice of closure” dated Friday that the platform is “no longer accessible.” The statement acknowledges that the closure is “abrupt and may cause disruption,” and says the firm is committed to helping customers “navigate through the transition.” Bench has previously said it had more than 600 employees and had received investor funding of US$113 million. It said it moved to Vancouver and changed its name to Bench in 2013, having started out in 2012 as 10sheet Inc in the U.S. Calls to Bench’s Vancouver office went to voice mail and did not immediately receive a response. But the company’s former CEO and co-founder Ian Crosby released a statement on social media on Friday, saying he was “very sad” about the closure. Crosby, who said he was ousted by the company’s board about three years ago, said there was a lesson in the fate of the company. “I hope the story of Bench goes on to become a warning for VCs (venture capitalists) that think they can ‘upgrade’ a company by replacing the founder. It never works,” he said. The University of British Columbia Sauder Business School alumni said he had been avoiding speaking publicly about Bench since his exit, but wanted to make a statement in light of the company’s demise. He said that in 2021 he had been battling with some board members over their strategy for a “new direction” that he thought was a “very bad idea.” “Rather than continuing to fight with me, they opted to just replace me, thinking that they could run the company better themselves,” he said. “I was totally convinced that their approach would destroy the company. I opted to resign rather than fight.” Other bookkeeping companies were quick to reach out to Bench’s former clients, with rivals such as Acuity and Better Bookkeeping making reference to Bench’s closure in social media pitches. A spokeswoman for B.C.‘s jobs ministry said they were looking into a request for comment. This report by The Canadian Press was first published Dec. 27, 2024.

Dwaraka Tirumala Rao, Director General of Police in Andhra Pradesh, reported a notable 5.7% decline in overall crime, offset by a sharp rise in cybercrime over the past year. Addressing the media, Rao highlighted that cybercrime, property crimes, and narcotics cases have been on the rise. Despite this, the police force achieved significant success in crime detection, heavily utilizing technology such as AI and drones. The number of registered cybercrime cases jumped to 916 in 2024, a 34% increase from the previous year, resulting in substantial financial losses across the state. Rao underscored the importance of continued technology investment, including AI-assisted investigation and extensive CCTV networks, to enhance policing efforts. He stressed that the technology-driven approach has already yielded results, notably in traffic management and solving highly complex cases. (With inputs from agencies.)
