Final regular-season games loom large in determining conference championship matchups
The Kansas City Chiefs picked up a road victory — but in true 2024 form, they didn’t make it easy on themselves. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes led a game-winning drive inside the last two minutes, lifting the Chiefs to a 30-27 win over the Carolina Panthers on Sunday afternoon at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, N.C. The Panthers, entering the game at 3-7, tied it at 27 with a touchdown and two-point conversion with 1:46 remaining. But that was too much time for Mahomes. His biggest moment was a scramble, as he sprinted 33 yards down the sideline to the Panthers 22 with 39 seconds left to put the Chiefs into field-goal range. Recently signed kicker Spencer Shrader put through the 31-yard field goal as time expired. This one was close because of KC’s inability to stop a before-the-game struggling Carolina pass offense. The Panthers, behind previously benched QB Bryce Young, dissected the Chiefs secondary. Young completed 21 of 35 passes for 262 yards, while Carolina averaged a healthy 5.8 yards per play. KC also got almost no pass rush for a second straight week — a reason for concern as the team prepares for the season’s most important games ahead. Mahomes, meanwhile, played one of his best games of the season, completing 27 of 37 passes for 269 yards with the three scores. The Chiefs led 20-9 at halftime thanks to their efficient offense. Mahomes took advantage of his few possessions then, completing 19 of 24 passes for 207 yards before the break with a pair of touchdown passes to tight end Noah Gray. KC scored on all four drives, including a 14-play, 92-yard march late in the second quarter. Young went 10 for 18 for 177 yards before the break, as Carolina averaged 8.6 yards per pass and 7.5 yards per play. The Chiefs (10-1) will play at home against the Las Vegas Raiders at 3 p.m. ET on Friday, Nov. 29. ©2024 The Kansas City Star. Visit kansascity.com . Snowfall cancels Argyle BIA Santa Claus paradeLuigi Mangione's friends and family members are stunned that the 26-year-old Ivy League grad is the suspected shooter of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson . A handful of Mangione's friends have spoken to the media about him following his arrest on Monday and subsequent murder charge, saying the Mangione they knew was a smart, quiet intellectual who struggled with back pain after a 2023 spinal surgery . In their first and only statement at the time of publication, Mangione's family said Tuesday, "Unfortunately, we cannot comment on news reports regarding Luigi Mangione . We only know what we have read in the media." The statement, released by Mangione's cousin, Maryland lawmaker Nino Mangione , continued. "Our family is shocked and devastated by Luigi's arrest. We offer our prayers to the family of Brian Thompson and we ask people to pray for all involved. We are devastated by this news." Former Classmate of Mangione Speaks to Newsweek Luigi Mangione's academic prowess was not lost on his former peers at the all-boys Gilman School in Baltimore, Maryland, a former classmate told Newsweek on Tuesday evening. The ex-student, who requested anonymity due to the ongoing circumstances, said that the boys of the 2016 graduating class were tight-knit and well-acquainted with each others' families. "Granted, it was a pretty long time ago, but Luigi was a really social kid," said the ex-classmate. "A really nice guy. Highly intelligent. I mean, he was, as everybody knows, our class valedictorian. Extremely, extremely intelligent. "So, it definitely caused a surprise, considering what he did. I definitely would have never seen that coming or anything of that nature." When word spread about Mangione and his arrest for allegedly killing Thompson, it sparked discussions and old memories among former Gilman attendees. While the ex-student told Newsweek that he and Mangione went their separate ways after high school, they still followed each other on social media. He added that Gilman instilled values including honor, integrity, excellence, and respect. "You could be seeing everything on social media, Twitter , Instagram , all that type of stuff," he said. "And it's all Luigi, whether it's a meme, whether it's a threat on Twitter, things like that. It's definitely weird stuff, a little surreal. "Regarding conversation with classmates or former classmates, we definitely all pretty much share that same sentiment. None of us had anything they didn't like about Luigi, like in terms of memories or personality. He was always, like I said, a really social guy. Really smart. Really, really smart. Pretty much got along with everybody. It's a really weird situation to be in." Hawaii Roommate Says Dating Wasn't Possible Mangione spent six months in 2022 living at Surfbreak, a Honolulu-based co-living space for remote workers, where he was among the first 20 residents paying $2,000 per month. Surfbreak's founder, R.J. Martin, described Mangione as an ideal community member who was upbeat and eager to give back. Martin told The New York Times that Mangione experienced frequent back pain. "His spine was kind of misaligned," Martin said. "He said his lower vertebrae were almost like a half-inch off, and I think it pinched a nerve." Due to the pain, Martin added that Mangione "knew that dating and being physically intimate with his back condition wasn't possible." Mangione left Hawaii and received spinal surgery in 2023. Martin said Mangione texted him photos of the back surgery. The friends exchanged sporadic texts over subsequent months but never saw each other in person after that. More Friends Speak to New York Times, NPR Two more of Mangione's friends spoke to The New York Times about their experiences with the suspected shooter. Aaron Cranston became friends with Mangione at Gilman High School, where Mangione was valedictorian. Cranston told The Times that Mangione was perhaps one of the brightest students at the elite private school. "He was a big believer in the power of technology to change the world," Cranston said of Mangione, noting Mangione was social, friendly, and never particularly political. Martin said that Mangione created a mobile app before attending college where users could fly a paper airplane through obstacles. Freddie Leatherbury also attended Gilman with Mangione. They were soccer, track, and cross-country teammates. "Those are both such disciplined sports. It says a lot about who he was as a student," Leatherbury told The Times . "He was very smart, a pretty big math guy, really well-read and quite well-liked, to be honest. I don't have any bad memories of him. He had a very healthy social circle." Leathebury also spoke to NPR, saying while he didn't stay close to Mangione, he knew he was having back problems. "In the last couple of years, Mangione was living in Hawaii, and the people there I talked to say that his back pain kept him from surfing, hiking, and generally enjoying life as a 20-something there," Leathebury said. "It also seems that Mangione was spending a lot of time online and following influencers who are big on masculinity-focused self-help advice. He followed libertarian and right-wing influencers like Joe Rogan and a fitness guru who gave advice about, for example, getting a gym membership instead of taking antidepressants. "And then, in the last year or so, things started to take a more disturbing tone. Mangione even left an online comment that praised the writing of Theodore Kaczynski, the domestic terrorist also known as the Unabomber," Leathebury said. "He had everything going for him," Martin said of Mangione. "And on top of that, he was well-adjusted socially. He had a lot of friends in a lot of different circles." Mangione Reported Missing Before Arrest Two weeks before Thompson's death, Mangione's mother, Kathleen Mangione, reported her son missing to the San Francisco Police Department. Luigi Mangione's family hadn't been in contact with him in six months, officials said. He also reportedly went dark on social media over the summer despite previously posting photos of his travels and documenting his reading habits on Goodreads. Concerns grew on social media in October after Mangione suddenly stopped communicating. One user on X tagged him, stating, "Nobody has heard from you in months, and apparently your family is looking for you," as well as "I don't know if you are okay." Other X users tweeted at Mangione's, with one mentioning unfulfilled commitments to help with their wedding, and another who expressed support, saying, "Know you are missed and loved," according to multiple outlets.
