TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Florida State has its quarterback for next season, and the Seminoles are counting on this college journeyman working out better than their previous one. Former Boston College standout Thomas Castellanos officially signed with FSU on Friday. The 5-foot-9 Georgia native started 20 games for the Eagles over the last two seasons, throwing for 3,614 yards and 33 touchdowns. He also ran for 1,307 yards and 15 scores. But he was injured and then benched in a game in early November. Five days later, he announced plans to enter the transfer portal and was not with the team for its final three regular-season games. The Eagles went 2-1 without him. Castellanos replaces DJ Uiagalelei, another two-time transfer who played just five games in 2024 before missing most of the season with a hand injury. The Seminoles (2-10) also started Brock Glenn and freshman Luke Kromenhoek, a former top recruit who reportedly is entering the transfer portal. None of those QBs proved effective as FSU ranked 132nd in total offense out of 134 teams. “Thomas Castellanos is one of the most dynamic playmakers in college football,” Seminoles coach Mike Norvell said. “He will be a great addition with his ability on the field, and he will be a tremendous complement to our roster as we bring this program back to the Florida State standard.” Castellanos spent his freshman season at UCF, where current FSU offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn was the head coach. The school announced the addition to coach Brent Brennan's staff on Friday. The 35-year-old Doege spent one season as Marshall's offensive coordinator, leading an offense that scored 31 points per game and rushed for more than 200 yards per game. He had previous stints at Purdue, Ole Miss, Southern California and Bowling Green. Doege had a prolific career as a quarterback under the late Mike Leach at Texas Tech, throwing for more than 4,000 yards each of his final two years before playing in the Canadian Football League. Michigan hires Lindsey as OC/QB coach ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Former North Carolina assistant Chip Lindsey has been hired as Michigan's offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. The Wolverines made it official Friday, bringing in Lindsey in an effort to revamp the team's struggling offense. Lindsey left UNC while the Tar Heels were hiring six-time Super Bowl-winning coach Bill Belichick as their head coach. Belichick is expected to reunite some of his former NFL staff in New England. Lindsey landed at Michigan, where coach Sherrone Moore fired offensive coordinator Kirk Campbell three days after the team's 13-10 victory at Ohio State to close the regular season. Campbell was Michigan’s quarterbacks coach when it won the national title after working as an offensive analyst during the 2022 season. Lindsey brings 27 years of collegiate coaching experience to Ann Arbor. He has led offenses that averaged at least 30 points a game in nine of his 12 seasons as a full-time coach at the collegiate level. And this year, it’s the destination that comedian Tony Hinchcliffe called “a floating island of garbage in the middle of the ocean” that’s experiencing outsize demand from Americans planning a warm island vacation. Talk about trashing stereotypes. Puerto Rico has recovered overseas visitors (excluding those from Canada and Mexico) faster than any U.S. state or territory — a staggering 85% increase over its 2019 overseas inbound visitor levels as of 2023, according to an October study from the U.S. National Travel and Tourism Office. There are now more daily flights from the U.S. West Coast, and hotel bookings are 6% higher so far in this last quarter of 2024 year-over-year. It’s a trifecta of tourism growth: more visitors, but also longer stays and a higher spend that reached a record $9.8 billion in 2023, boosting small businesses as well as major brands. “We don’t have a slow season in Puerto Rico anymore,” says Brad Dean, chief executive officer at Discover Puerto Rico. Even if they’re not booking, people are dreaming about “La Isla.” By tracking flight searches for trips between November 2024 and February 2025, a measure of “inspirational” demand, tourism intelligence company Mabrian Technologies reports Puerto Rico is up 9% compared with the same period last year and leads Barbados, the Dominican Republic, Jamaica and the Bahamas in the Caribbean proper. Only Costa Rica ranked higher in the wider region. Dean attributes Puerto Rico’s ongoing tourism growth to a strategic effort to reposition the island’s brand as more than a sun-and-sea destination, starting back in 2018. That led to the Live Boricua campaign, which began in 2022 and leaned heavily on culture, history and cuisine and was, Dean says, “a pretty bold departure” in the way Puerto Rico was showcased to travelers. He adds that at least $2 billion in tourism spend is linked to this campaign. “We (also) haven’t shied away from actively embracing the LGBTQ+ community, and that has opened up Puerto Rico to audiences that may not have considered the Caribbean before,” Dean says. Hotels are preparing to meet this growing demand: A number of established boutique properties are undergoing upgrades valued between $4 million and more than $50 million, including Hotel El Convento; La Concha, which will join the Marriott Autograph Collection; Condado Vanderbilt Hotel; and the Wyndham Grand Rio Mar. That’s in addition to ultra-chic options that are coming online in 2025, including the adults-only Alma San Juan, with rooms overlooking Plaza Colón in the heart of Old San Juan, and the five-star Veranó boutique hotel in San Juan’s trendy Santurce neighborhood. The beachfront Ritz-Carlton San Juan in Isla Verde will also be reopening seven years after Hurricane Maria decimated the island. The travel industry’s success is helping boost employment on the island, to the tune of 101,000 leisure and hospitality jobs as of September 2024, a 26% increase over pre-pandemic levels, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Efforts to promote Puerto Rico’s provinces beyond the San Juan metro area — such as surfing hub Rincón on the west coast, historical Ponce on the south coast and Orocovis for nature and coffee haciendas in the central mountains —have spread the demand to small businesses previously ignored by the travel industry. Take Sheila Osorio, who leads workshops on Afro-Puerto Rican bomba music and dance at Taller Nzambi, in the town of Loíza, 15 miles east of San Juan; or Wanda Otero, founder of cheese-producing company Vaca Negra in Hatillo, an hour’s drive west of Old San Juan, where you can join a cheese-making workshop and indulge in artisanal cheese tastings. “The list of businesses involved in tourism has gone from 650 in 2018 to 6,100, many of which are artists and artisans,” Dean says. While New Yorkers and Miami residents have always been the largest visitor demographic, Dean says more mainland Americans now realize that going to Puerto Rico means passport-free travel to enjoy beaches, as well as opportunities to dine in Michelin-rated restaurants, hike the only rainforest in the U.S. and kayak in a bioluminescent bay. Visitors from Chicago and Dallas, for example, have increased by approximately 40% from July 1, 2023, to June 30, 2024, compared with the same period in 2022-2023, and more travelers are expected from Denver now that United Airlines Holdings Inc. has kicked off its first nonstop service to San Juan, beginning on Oct. 29. Previously, beach destinations that were easy to reach on direct flights from Denver included Mexico, Belize and California, but now Puerto Rico joins that list with a 5.5-hour nonstop route that cuts more than two hours from the next-best option. Given United Airlines’ hub in San Francisco, it could mean more travelers from the Golden State in the near future, too. In December, U.S. airlines will have 3,000 more seats per day to the territory compared with the same period last year, for a total of 84,731 — surpassing even Mexico and the Dominican Republic in air capacity, according to data from aviation analytics firm Cirium. Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport, the island’s primary gateway, is projecting a record volume of 13 million passengers by year’s end — far surpassing the 9.4 million it saw in 2019. As for Hinchcliffe’s “floating island of garbage” line, Dean says it was “a terribly insensitive attempt at humor” that transformed outrage into a marketing silver lining, with an outpouring of positive public sentiment and content on Puerto Rico all over social media. LOS ANGELES (AP) — OpenAI CEO Sam Altman is planning to make a $1 million personal donation to President-Elect Donald Trump's inauguration fund, joining a number of tech companies and executives who are working to improve their relationships with the incoming administration. A spokesperson for OpenAI confirmed the move on Friday. The announcement comes one day after Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, said it donated $1 million to the same fund. Amazon also said it plans to donate $1 million. “President Trump will lead our country into the age of AI, and I am eager to support his efforts to ensure America stays ahead," Altman said in a statement. Altman, who is in a legal dispute with rival Elon Musk, has said he is “not that worried” about the Tesla CEO's influence in the incoming administration. Trump is putting Musk, the world’s richest man, and Vivek Ramaswamy , an entrepreneur and former Republican presidential candidate, in charge of the new Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, which is an outside advisory committee that will work with people inside the government to reduce spending and regulations. Musk, an early OpenAI investor and board member, sued the artificial intelligence company earlier this year alleging that the maker of ChatGPT betrayed its founding aims of benefiting the public good rather than pursuing profits. As former Big East Conference rivals, Syracuse and Georgetown have staged many memorable contests over the decades with the Orange holding a 54-45 all-time advantage. AMD recently put the Ryzen 7 9800X3D desktop processor on the shelves, claiming it to be the "ultimate solution for the PC gaming market." In the gaming community, the X3D class processors have stirred quite some buzz , and over the past couple of years, gaming and benchmark tests have also solidified that reputation . The key here is the AMD 3D V-Cache technology , which appeared in its second-generation avatar in 2024. Take for example the AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D processor, which features an impressive 96MB of L3 cache. Now, the cache capacity is important for computing but plays a key role for playing games, too. Technically, it's a chunk of memory packed with the processor that is shared between the core components. Simply put, it acts like a quick access library for pulling up data that the processor requires frequently, or in a gaming context, refreshing and loading game assets. The more information a CPU can store locally, the less time it has to spend retrieving it from another place. To that end, the bigger the L3 cache, the higher the amount of data it can store. This is important from a performance perspective when it comes to demanding tasks like gaming, where the speed of data retrieval plays a key role. The benefits, ultimately, would be reduced loading times and an overall smoother gameplay experience at high visual fidelity. On AMD's X3D processors, L3 cache is what you get plenty of, thanks to the unique 3D V-Cache architecture. When users go out shopping for their next desktop processor to play games, the L3 cache is usually not at the top of the priority list. What usually takes precedence is the number of cores, the process node, raw power draw, and the frequency figures. However, when you finally land at a point where your options seem almost evenly matched, either within AMD's ecosystem or across the Intel lineup , the amount of L3 cache should be one of the key deciders. With the X3D series processors, AMD initially deployed a vertically-mounted 3D L3 cache. On older iterations, like the Ryzen 9 7950X3D, the company used an asymmetric chiplet design for the processor where each Core Chiplet Die (CCD) had a different configuration. Specifically, one of them offers an extra 64MB of L3 3D V-Cache. In this configuration, one of the CCDs focused on cache benefits, while the other one emphasized more raw clock speed, thereby achieving a hybrid flexible design. With the introduction of the Ryzen 7 9800X3D processor, AMD put the 64MB 3D cache module right under the processor so that it is in closer proximity to the cooling solution which also keeps the new Zen 5 cores chill under stress. Doing so solves the thermal constraints that blocked overclocking on the first-gen X3D processors. AMD claims this design delivers an 8% improvement in gaming performance and that it was 20% faster than what the competition (read: Intel) can muster. AMD attributes the 3D-V Cache technology aboard the latest X3D processor to roughly an 8% gain in FPS numbers and "double-digit percentage improvements" on a generation-over-generation basis. The company also assures smoother gameplay, fewer stutters, and overall higher frame rate output in certain games. In case all those assertions have already swayed your opinion, the octa-core (120W TDP, 5.2GHz boost clock speed) Ryzen 7 9800X3D has another perk waiting for you. This one is the first fully unlocked X3D processor, so if you need to squeeze that extra ounce of processing mojo, you can take the overclocking route. On the older generation and lower-tier X3D processors, AMD didn't allow overclocking, even though they delivered the usual set of technical benefits touted for the 3D V-Cache tech, especially for video games. The limitation primarily has to do with thermal and power headroom limitations due to the new frequency and voltage scaling infrastructure implemented on the X3D processors. AMD's Robert Hallock explained in an interview at the 45:45 mark that the voltage limit for X3D processors was set to a lower threshold, closer to the 1.3-1.35V range. He also mentioned that the 3D stacking technology simply wasn't simply scalable in its early iterations, and that's why the company decided not to enable overclocking and hoped that it would mature in the near future. With the flagship Ryzen 7 9800X3D processor, at least, AMD has apparently figured it out. The general consensus with the L3 cache situation is that it is good for games as well as demanding workloads. It's not an inaccurate assumption, but needs a bit of clarity, especially in the context of AMD's 3D V-cache tech on the X3D processors. "3D V-Cache delivers real performance improvements in games and certain multimedia encoding workloads, but not every application benefits from the additional cache. Some apps care more about higher clock rates or are designed to scale well across many cores," AMD says in its press material. The benefits, however, depend on multiple factors, such as the kind of games you are playing. If you are playing older games that are more reliant on the processor's raw frequency, cache won't make much of a difference, but for modern titles like " Far Cry 6 ," they would see the benefits of higher capacity. In the case of newer games, if they are more reliant on the latency numbers as well as graphics and processing firepower, the 3D V-Cache won't offer benefits like a higher FPS count. Even the application programming interface (API) deployed by the game developer matters, explained Hallock in an interview with Digital Trends . What about the benefits of AMD 3D V-cache for non-gaming tasks? Well, you may not see them. "I know, the extra cache capacity, it actually doesn't help outside of gaming," Hallock explained at the 50-minute mark in an interview, giving the example of content creation apps and reasoning that their memory interaction (or data fetching) is less frequent compared to those of games.IOWA CITY, Iowa — Jahmal Banks let out deep breath that would have been visible a few minutes earlier on the Kinnick Stadium field as the pom-pom atop his red stocking cap bobbed. Of course, Nebraska will be an active shopper in the free-agent market, too. Unlike the past seven seasons, though, bowl season will also include a Nebraska bowl game. A year ago the matchups for possible bowls the Huskers are contenders for now — including the Music City, Guaranteed Rate, Pinstripe, GameAbove Sports and Duke’s Mayo — were announced the Sunday after conference championship weekend. That gives NU a full week to chew on yet another one-score loss before it has an opponent for which to prepare. While a crowd of Iowa players reveled in boisterous extended postgame interviews, only a few Huskers spoke. Those brief sessions — for just a few minutes each as the team hurried to pack up and return to Lincoln — were more about the future than the painful immediate past. Quarterback Dylan Raiola — like his new offensive coordinator, Dana Holgorsen — said he knew he would take at least a day or two off. “I’m not really sure what’s going to happen next, what bowl we’re going to or what’s going on,” the freshman said. “We’ll figure that out soon.” Senior defensive lineman Ty Robinson wore a straight face as he considered that his sixth and final college season would last longer than any of the others. Chasing three points was the program’s season-long motto and ultimately the Hawkeyes were the ones who caught the triple. “It’s just where we’re at, you know what I mean?” Rhule said. “As dumb as that sounds, we have to get better. Have to get better.” Nebraska has objectively improved in areas from the beginning of the year. The defense was dominant save for one disastrous sequence on the 72-yard touchdown that began with a swing pass to Iowa running back Kaleb Johnson and included five missed tackles. The offense under Holgorsen moved and controlled the ball. But the shortcomings were on display, too. The Huskers forced no takeaways for a second time in November. Too many potential big plays on offense went unmade or unseen. Special teams featured another catastrophic moment on the muffed punt and a series of lesser miscues that consistently tilted field position toward the Hawkeyes. Friday wasn’t the season finale this time.
