The Federal Government through the Ministry of Finance on Sunday said Nigeria saved $20 billion by removing petrol subsidy and adopting market-based foreign exchange pricing. Sunday Telegraph recalls that during his swearing in as the 6th President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria on May 29, 2023, President Bola Tinubu official announced the removal of furl subsidy. Speaking at an event in Abuja marking the first 100 days in office of Esther Walso-Jack, Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun made this disclosure. According to him, the two subsidies were costing the country five percent of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP). “When there was a subsidy on PMS and on foreign exchange, they collectively cost five per cent of GDP. Assuming GDP was $400 billion on average, five per cent of that is $20 billion, funds that could now go into infrastructure, health, social services, and education,” he said. The Minister further noted that the savings are being redirected into developmental projects. “The real change is that no one can wake up and target cheap funding or forex from the Central Bank to enrich themselves without adding value. “Similarly, profiteering from the inefficient petrol subsidy regime is no longer possible,” he added.

Noah Gray caught two TD passes as the Chiefs (10-1) bounced back from last week’s 30-21 loss at Buffalo and won at the buzzer yet again in a season of narrow escapes. DeAndre Hopkins also had a touchdown catch for the two-time defending Super Bowl champions, who scored on their first five possessions. Bryce Young finished 21 of 35 for 262 yards and a touchdown for the Panthers (3-8), who had their two-game winning streak snapped. David Moore had six receptions for 80 yards and a touchdown. WASHINGTON (AP) — Federal prosecutors moved Monday to abandon the classified documents case against President-elect Donald Trump in light of longstanding Justice Department policy that says sitting presidents cannot face criminal prosecution. The announcement in an appeals court filing in Florida came shortly after a similar filing was made by prosecutors in Washington, D.C., where they asked to dismiss the case accusing Trump of plotting to overturn the 2020 election . The move amounts to a predictable but nonetheless stunning conclusion to a criminal case that just one year ago had been seen as the most perilous legal threat that he faced. It reflects the practical consequences of Trump’s victory, ensuring he enters office free from scrutiny over his hoarding of top secret documents and conduct that prosecutors said had jeopardized national scrutiny. The dismissal had been foreshadowed in recent weeks by the revelation that special counsel Jack Smith was evaluating how to wind down both that case and a separate pending prosecution he brought charging Trump with plotting to overturn the results of the 2020 election. The Justice Department believes Trump can no longer be tried in accordance with longstanding policy that says sitting presidents cannot be prosecuted. Trump has cast both cases as politically motivated, and had vowed to fire Smith as soon as he takes office in January. The 2020 election case brought last year was once seen as one of the most serious legal threats facing the Republican as he vied to reclaim the White House. But it quickly stalled amid legal fighting over Trump’s sweeping claims of immunity from prosecution for acts he took while in the White House. (AP) — Austin Seibert missed his second extra point of the game with 21 seconds left after Jayden Daniels and Terry McLaurin connected on an 86-yard touchdown, Juanyeh Thomas returned the ensuing onside kick attempt for a touchdown and the Dallas Cowboys pulled out a 34-26 victory Sunday that extended the Washington Commanders’ skid to three games. Seibert, who missed the previous two games with a right hip injury, was wide left on the point-after attempt following a low snap. Thomas then took the kick back 43 yards as the Cowboys (4-7) ended their losing streak at five in improbable fashion. Part of that was the play of backup Cooper Rush, who threw for 247 yards and two TDs in his third start in place of starter Dak Prescott. Part was also the defense forcing two turnovers, as Chauncey Golston ripped the ball out of Brian Robinson Jr.’s hands for what was called an interception of Daniels in the second quarter, and Donovan Wilson stripped John Bates midway through the fourth. KaVonte Turpin provided the fireworks with a spinning, 99-yard kickoff return TD seconds after Daniels found Zach Ertz in the end zone and scored on a 2-point conversion to cut the deficit to three with 3:02 left. The land near Dow's Lake that will one day be the new home of the Ottawa Hospital's Civic Campus is being clear cut in preparation for construction. Crews were seen Tuesday clearing land and trees from an area around Maple Drive, including near the tennis courts in the area. The main hospital will be built between Maple and Prince of Wales drives. This is another step in the plan to construct a cutting-edge replacement for the aging Civic Campus, which just celebrated its 100th anniversary. The new hospital is planned to have a rooftop helipad, the most advanced trauma centre in eastern Ontario, specialized surgical suites, specialty programs and outpatient clinics, and is expected to have one of the most innovative neuroscience research programs in the world. Construction has already begun on the hospital's parking garage. PCL Constructors and EllisDon have been named as the construction team for the $2.8 billion project. The Ministry of Health is funding $2.1 billion toward the new hospital. The remaining costs are expected to be covered through other revenue streams, including a $500-million fundraiser. But in his first season completely at the helm, the Wolverines have declined significantly following their national title a season ago. The Big Ten is home to one of the most dynamic freshmen in the country in Ohio State receiver Jeremiah Smith. He has 52 catches for 899 yards and nine touchdowns. Highly touted quarterback Dylan Raiola has teamed up with fellow freshman Jacory Barney (49 catches) to lead Nebraska to bowl eligibility. Ohio State is on track to land the Big Ten's top class, according to 247 Sports, but the big news recently was quarterback Bryce Underwood flipping from LSU to Michigan.
