African countries require greater tax revenue mobilization to experience economic growth – IMFIs ‘Glicked’ the new ‘Barbenheimer’? ‘Wicked’ and ‘Gladiator II’ collide in theatersEAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield embarrassed the woeful Giants with his arm and legs, and if that wasn't enough, he rubbed it in by mimicking New York fan favorite Tommy DeVito's celebratory dance after scoring a touchdown. Mayfield catapulted into the end zone on a spectacular 10-yard scramble for one of Tampa Bay's four rushing TDs, and the Buccaneers beat the Giants and new starting quarterback DeVito 30-7 on Sunday, snapping a four-game losing streak and extending New York's skid to six. With both teams struggling and coming off byes, most of the focus leading up to the game was on the Giants' decisions this week to bench and then release quarterback Daniel Jones. The brash DeVito was given the starting job and asked to spark coach Brian Daboll's team, as he did last season. Instead, Mayfield provided the energy with his play and his trolling of DeVito. “Tribute to Tommy,” said a straight-faced Mayfield, who was 24 of 30 for 294 yards. “He’s a good dude, that’s why. Most of the times, I don’t know what I’m going to do. It’s spontaneous.” Mayfield was asked several times about the gesture and admitted he wanted to give Giants fans something they liked, adding he met DeVito at the Super Bowl in Las Vegas in February. “He had his chain blinged out, swag walking through the casino. It was awesome,” Mayfield said. “It was like a movie scene, honestly.” DeVito did nothing to help the NFL's lowest-scoring offense. He threw for 189 yards, mostly in the second half with New York well on its way to its sixth straight loss at home, where it is winless. Meanwhile, the Buccaneers dominated in every phase in a near-perfect performance that featured TD runs of 1 yard by Sean Tucker, 6 yards by Bucky Irving and 1 yard by Rachaad White. After recent losses to the Ravens, 49ers and Chiefs, Tampa Bay (5-6) moved within one game of idle Atlanta in the NFC South. “We’re hoping it builds confidence,” Mayfield said. “We have a belief that we are still sitting and controlling our own destiny.” Tampa Bay scored on five of its on first six possessions to open a 30-0 lead, and none was more exciting than Mayfield's TD run with 12 seconds left in the first half. On a second-and-goal from the 10, he avoided pressure and went for the end zone. He was hit by Cor'Dale Flott low and Dru Phillips high around the 2-yard line, and he was airborne when he crossed the goal line. The ball came loose when he hit the turf but he jumped up and flexed, DeVito-style, as the Bucs took a 23-0 lead. DeVito said players talked about the celebration in the locker room but he did not see it. Daboll was asked about the gesture and said Mayfield played well. He said the Giants' poor performance had nothing to do with Jones being released. “No excuse on that,” said Daboll, whose job is on the line despite making the playoffs in 2022. “We just didn’t do a good enough job.” “We played soft, and they beat the (expletive) out of us,” defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence added. Mayfield's favorite target Mike Evans returned to the lineup after missing three games with a hamstring injury and had five catches for 68 yards. Irving had 87 yards rushing and six catches for 64 yards. The Bucs held New York to three first downs and 45 yards in the first half, and they finished with 450 yards to the Giants' 245. DeVito had a 17-yard run in the fourth quarter to set up a 1-yard touchdown run by Devin Singletary. The brash New Jersey native was sacked four times, including once in the fourth quarter, which forced him to go to the bench for one play. Injuries Buccaneers: LT Tristan Wirfs (knee) did not play and Justin Skule replaced him. ... Tampa Bay lost OLB Joe Tryon-Shoyinka to an ankle injury in the second quarter and safety Jordan Whitehead to a pectoral injury in the fourth quarter. Giants: LT Jermaine Eluemunor (quad) and OLB Azeez Ojulari (toe) were hurt in the first quarter and did not return. Up next Buccaneers: At Carolina next Sunday. Fidelity National Financial, Inc. (NYSE:FNF) Receives Consensus Recommendation of “Hold” from Brokerages

On the first trading day of the week, the Indian stock market witnessed a weak opening on Monday. The BSE Sensex dropped by 80.07 points to open at 78,619.00, while the NSE Nifty declined by 28.40 points, trading at 23,785. The downturn in the Indian markets is attributed to weakness in global markets. On Friday, the US markets experienced a significant decline, which has impacted the Indian market's sentiment today. Additionally, with the year-end approaching, the participation of foreign investors has decreased, leading to expectations of a range-bound market. In terms of stock performance, gains were observed in Bharti Airtel, ITC, UltraTech Cement, and Adani Ports. On the other hand, Reliance, HCL Tech, Tata Motors, and TCS were among the major laggards. World is about to see off the biggest election year in history. Almost half of humanity was involved in election exercises across continents, ranging from large democracies like India , USA and Indonesia to island nations like Tuvalu with 11,000 population. Citizen voters, in over 70 countries, millions of them first timers, attempted to address their own situations at the voting booths. ET Year-end Special Reads What kept India's stock market investors on toes in 2024? India's car race: How far EVs went in 2024 Investing in 2025: Six wealth management trends to watch out for The last of the national elections came this Sunday in Chad in central Africa amidst an opposition boycott.Universal suffrage remains the spine that holds a dithering democratic fabric whose other ingredients are in constant debate. BR Ambedkar linked elections to political democracy, ushering conditions for equality and justice. But if elections are undermined by impurities, process glitches, fake narratives, boycotts, competing claims, street protests, violence or even abandoned midway, that could be the proverbial last nail. The Stockholm-based International IDEA (Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance), in its report 'Global State of Democracy 2024', points to a certain erosion of credibility of elections compared to five years back, owing to declining turnout and other pathological conditions. The experience in India's neighborhood as elsewhere has been mixed at best. Declining interest Elections continue to be democracy's beautiful action play, especially the view of ordinary folks queuing up to vote. The average turnout of voters in elections this year is estimated to be at 61%. During the 15 years from 2008 to 2023, there has been a disconcerting decline of about 10% in voting across the world. India, with its electoral list inching towards a billion, has successfully reversed the trend by hitting the 65%-mark third time in a row, starting from 2014. Women turned out at a higher rate again in 2024 like in 2019. The best part of this year's last two assembly elections in Jharkhand and Maharashtra is the record turnout. Not a family show Campaigns have made elections a spectacle, an ugly one off late. Electioneering is developing as a democracy malfunction with misinformation, racist references, outright abuse and misogyny becoming its part. Poll time divisive narratives from top leaders could leave unremedied scars and dent unity. Champions of unbridled freedom do not find a problem with campaign rhetoric even of the most repelling imagery; that's what democracy and rights are about, they would say. But hate speech amplified by social media and made potent by artificial intelligence, is becoming a bigger concern because it is seen yielding electoral victories. Reasonable restrictions, enforced by India's model code, have been of partial help. Top-notch campaigners and party bosses must take the responsibility, a point hammered by Election Commission of India in recent polls. It is surprising that elections of the 21st century still veer around identity: in US elections, the segments read as: coloured women, white workers, Hispanic, Asian, college goers or dropouts and in Indian context it is: OBC, SC, ST, minority and majority religion. Each one is a vote bank, the contesting candidate reduced to a mascot. For the USA that swears by individual worth, one commentary after November polls was that it is not ready for a woman president yet and a coloured one at that. One in five elections between 2020-2024, was challenged by the defeated candidates. Even as votes were getting counted to decide the 47th Presidency in the United States, the world was worriedly recalling the riot at the US Capitol on January 6, 2021. Donald Trump notched an emphatic victory, but a moot question is what if it was otherwise. Joe Biden exuded the ultimate grace of democracy when he asked supporters to "bring down the temperature". On the electoral system, Biden further said, "It is honest, it is fair, and it is transparent, and it can be trusted, win or lose."Disappointment over electoral outcomes can be provoking. But polity and politicians in India and everywhere have an urgent obligation not to fall into a trap that could erode public trust. It will be myopic to shift blame to voting equipment or a standard procedure after an electoral loss. Well Commissioned India The Constitution of India has imaginatively raised certain institutions to serve as guarantors for the country's democratic arrangement. The ECI is the critical one which gathers the franchise, counts and delivers the result that is convertible to legislative and executive leadership. Its conduct of 18 Lok Sabha and over 400 assembly elections has been rated highly by all stakeholders and by the wider world, irrespective of seasonal grievances. One sufficient pointer to performance is the negligible re-polling in only 40 out of 10.5 lakh polling stations in the last Lok Sabha polls. Smooth conduct of both parliamentary and assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir, with high people's participation is another impressive statement.Election management bodies (EMBs) across countries are reforming and acquiring tech-backed efficiencies but voting and counting remain points of vulnerability. Safeguarding voters against lies, fakes and inducements is another ever expanding task. Unlike ECI, which has a staggering capacity for execution, others may require collaboration for ensuring electoral integrity. India clearly has a role to play. Last Defence The 2024 Economics Nobel recognises the role of democracy and its institutions like free and fair elections in upholding prosperity. Voting rights and correctness of representation have witnessed sizeable compromise in parts of the globe, but there have been elections this year, which immaculately embodied expression of people's will. The International IDEA underlines that India, and some other countries have "allowed the voters to have an effective voice". Good elections look like the last sure wall to not only prevent any democracy downslide, but also to enhance its promise. A few really lucky MPs received freebie tickets to international rugby matches. While another received a framed photo of the Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Edward, from the British family. Some MP’s received livestock, while others declared their directorships, partnerships and loans. MP’s across party lines declared their interests as is required by law. In terms of gifts, it was probably the Minister of International Relations and Cooperation Ronald Lamola who hit the jackpot. He received a top-of-the-range cellphone, Russian vodka, and a 15-year-old whiskey. Water and Sanitation Minister Pemmy Majodina received a comforter as a gift for Mother Day as well as a massage voucher. The list is included in the 2024 Register of Member Interests released by Parliament. Each year, MPs must register all their financial interests, as well as those of their spouses, dependents and permanent companions. This is to ensure transparency and that they have no conflict of interest in their roles as elected public officials. This register, as well as a code of conduct, outlines the standards of ethical behaviour for MPs. So, work outside of Parliament, gifts and hospitality, as well as land or property ownership, are some of the things MPs have to declare. The register and code of conduct is a standard set out in Parliaments worldwide. The code proposes penalties if breached, depending on the nature of the breach. He described this move as a major advancement that enhances Kuwait’s position in pediatric medicine. In a statement to the press following the opening of the Second Kuwait Pediatric Conference on Saturday, Dr Al-Awadhi emphasized the vaccines’ importance and its significant impact on reducing respiratory infections in children. In his opening speech, he highlighted that child health is fundamental to societal progress, stressing the vital role of scientific research in finding effective solutions to health challenges facing the community. Dr Al-Awadhi also explained that the Ministry of Health has focused heavily on pediatric care in recent years by establishing specialized departments in hospitals, equipping them with the latest medical technology, and ensuring they are staffed with highly trained Kuwaiti medical professionals. He reiterated the ministry’s commitment to staying at the forefront of global medical advancements, noting that the continued organization of scientific conferences is evidence of the ministry’s strong support for ongoing medical education and collaboration with leading medical centers worldwide. Conference chair Dr Iman Al-Enaizi called the event a unique gathering of expertise in various areas of pediatrics, both regionally and internationally. She pointed out that five leading global medical centers are participating, enriching the conference with the latest research and developments in child health. Dr Al-Enaizi also mentioned that this year’s conference will focus on new topics, including adolescent health, following the ministry’s decision to raise the age for “child health screenings” in Kuwait to 14-16 years. She added that the conference also provides parents with the chance to meet with doctors from the international hospitals that have treated their children. Dr Sundus Al-Shareeda, Chair of the Scientific Committee, said the three-day conference serves as a prominent scientific platform, bringing together over 90 speakers from across the world. Dr Al-Shareeda further explained that the conference includes more than seven interactive workshops covering specialized topics such as pediatric cardiology, neonatal care, medical leadership, and emergency medicine. She emphasized that the conference aims to enhance knowledge exchange, skill development, and the building of strong partnerships among professionals in this vital field. — KUNA
