Scott County authorities allege a Davenport man wounded someone during a shooting on Dec. 9. Josef C. Lowe, 22, faces multiple charges, including intimidation with a dangerous weapon, going armed with intent, second-degree criminal mischief and person ineligible to carry dangerous weapons, county court records state. Authorities accuse him of committing the shooting around 9:18 a.m. at a residence in the 1300 block of West 16th Street. Josef C. Lowe One person suffered a minor gunshot wound to the leg and refused to be taken to the hospital court records state. A vehicle also had damage from the gunfire. Other charges against Lowe relate to allegations that he has been dealing marijuana and caused damage to two vehicles on Dec. 3. Once officers began the investigation into the shooting, police found video footage they say implicates Lowe, who had been named as a suspect. Court records include a timeline from Dec. 9 based on that footage: After he was Mirandized, Lowe told investigators that he removed the license plates and shot at the residence on Marquette Street. Authorities allege Lowe intended to frighten and intimidate the person at the residence, records state. After the shooting, Lowe collected the spent 9mm casings that had been ejected in his Impala as he fired at the house, records state. Police served a search warrant on Lowe’s person, residence and vehicle on Dec. 13, records state. While conducting that search, police recovered those casings, a 9mm pistol and red pants Lowe wore while carrying out the attack, authorities allege in court records. In addition to the evidence of the shooting they allege they found, police also contend they recovered 96 grams of cannabis, 23 marijuana vape cartridges and drug packaging material. Lowe also did not have the proper drug tax stamps affixed to the cannabis and cartridges, authorities allege. During his interview with police, Lowe also admitted to selling marijuana and marijuana vape cartridges, records state. As a result of these accusations, Lowe has been charged with two counts each of controlled substance violation, failure to affix drug tax stamp, records state. On Dec. 4, police began investigating damage to two vehicles late the night before at a residence in the 900 block of Kirkwood Boulevard, records state. One had a smashed back window and both had slashed tires, according to court documents. When police interviewed Lowe on Dec. 13, he told investigators that he hired someone to damage the vehicles in return for providing marijuana, authorities allege. Lowe told police that a person associated with the Kirkwood address owed him $200 for drugs. The person Lowe allegedly hired was not identified in court records. As a result of these accusations, Lowe faces a charge of second-degree criminal mischief, records state. Lowe’s total bail was $15,000, according to the Scott County Jail. He posted his bond on Dec. 13, about an hour after the Davenport police brought him to the jail. His next court date was not available as of Tuesday. KHAN YOUNIS, Gaza Strip (AP) — Israeli airstrikes tore through a tent camp for displaced Palestinians in southern Gaza on Wednesday, sparking fires and killing at least 21 people, according to the head of a nearby hospital, in the latest assault on a sprawling tent city that Israel designated a humanitarian safe zone but has repeatedly targeted. The Israeli military said it struck senior Hamas militants “involved in terrorist activities” in the area, without providing additional details, and said it took precautions to minimize harm to civilians. The strike on the Muwasi tent camp was one of several deadly assaults across the Gaza Strip on Wednesday. An Israeli attack in central Gaza killed at least 10 more people, including four children, according to Palestinian medics. Israel’s devastating war in Gaza , launched after Hamas’ October 2023 attack, shows no signs of ending after nearly 14 months. Hamas is still holding dozens of Israeli hostages, and most of Gaza’s population has been displaced and is reliant on international food aid to survive. Israel is also pressing a major offensive in the isolated north, where experts say Palestinians might be experiencing famine . The Biden administration has pledged to make a new push for a Gaza ceasefire now that there's a truce in Lebanon between Israel and the militant group Hezbollah, ending more than a year of cross-border fighting. Meanwhile, President-elect Donald Trump demanded this week the release of hostages held by Hamas before he is sworn into office in January. Wednesday's strike in Muwasi — a desolate area with few public services that holds hundreds of thousands of displaced people — wounded at least 28 people, according to Atif al-Hout, the director of Nasser Hospital in the southern city of Khan Younis. An Associated Press journalist at the hospital counted at least 15 bodies, but said reaching a precise number was difficult because many of the dead were dismembered, some without heads or badly burned. In the morgue, an infant's blackened hand and face peeked out from beneath a heavy blanket used to transport bodies to the hospital. “It was like doomsday,” said a wounded woman, Iman Jumaa, who held back tears as she described how the strike killed her father, her brothers and her brothers' children. Videos and photos of the strike shared widely on social media showed flames and a column of black smoke rising into the night sky, as well as twisted metal tent frames and shredded fabric. Palestinian men searched through the still-burning wreckage, shouting, “Over here guys!” Further away, civilians stood at a distance, observing the destruction. The military said the strikes had set off secondary blasts, indicating explosives present in the area had detonated. It was not possible to independently confirm the Israeli claims, and the strikes could also have ignited fuel, cooking gas canisters or other materials in the camp. The Oct. 7, 2023 Hamas-led attack on southern Israel killed some 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and around 250 people were abducted. On Wednesday, Israel said its forces recovered the body of a hostage who was captured alive during the Oct. 7 attack. Israel believes Itay Svirsky was killed by his captors. Ohio State AD Ross Bjork appeared on 97.1 The Fan in Columbus on Thursday, where a radio host asked him whether Day would be the Buckeyes' coach at the start of next season regardless of how the playoffs shake out. "Absolutely," said Bjork, who came to Ohio State from the same role at Texas A&M in July. "Coach Day and I have just hit it off so well. I've been really, really impressed. Every single time I've talked to him, I've learned something. He's innovative. He recruits at the highest level. He's got a great staff. There's always tweaks. There was tweaks after last year, right? You're always going to tweak things. You're always going to make adjustments. You're always going to make improvements." Bjork continued by addressing the "championship or bust" attitude held by some of the fanbase. "This whole mentality about -- and look, we live it, and we sign up for it -- but if you get fixated on the end result and not have the process fully baked every time, you're going to lose," Bjork said. "The mindset's going to lose because you're only fixated on one thing. And so what we have to do is this whole ‘championship or bust' mentality, you want that as the goal, but it has to be about the process. "To me, we've got to maybe change some conversations a little bit. I think we need to maybe just approach things a little bit differently." Day is 66-10 as Ohio State's coach and led the Buckeyes to one national championship game appearance, a 52-24 loss to Alabama to cap the 2020 season. Ohio State went 10-2 in the regular season but missed out on a place in the Big Ten championship game when rival Michigan defeated the Buckeyes 13-10 on Nov. 30. It was Michigan's fourth straight win in The Game, and Day is now 1-4 as a head coach against the Wolverines. At the time, Bjork released a statement of support for Day, and he doubled down during Thursday's radio hit. "He's great to work with. He totally gets it. He loves being a Buckeye, and so we're going to support him at the highest level throughout," Bjork said. "But here's the thing too, and the reason why we needed to say something after that game is we're still breathing. They're still alive. The season's not over. The book is not closed, right? And so we've got to have confidence. I mean, Ohio State should be confident every single day. We're Ohio State. New Delhi: District-level data collection on climate change, creation of a “climate-risk atlas” and realigning of CSR subjects with environmental issues to re-focus from urban to rural areas are among the suggestions made by a core advisory group of the NHRC, officials said on Tuesday. The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) organised a meeting of the group on environment, climate change and human rights on the theme ‘Climate Change and Human Rights’ in hybrid mode in New Delhi. NHRC’s acting chairperson Vijaya Bharathi Sayani emphasised that climate change is impacting vulnerable communities, particularly tribal people whose traditional livelihoods are directly tied to the environment. She highlighted the ancient wisdom embedded in Indian texts, which underscores the deep connection between humanity and nature, to find solutions to deal with the challenges posed by climate change, the NHRC said in a statement. Some of the suggestions that emanated from the discussions included collecting data on climate change at the district level to understand its dimensions, and collaborating with local communities to develop expertise with sustainable solutions to mitigate its impact is necessary, a senior official said. Other suggestions included promoting research into the reasons and effects of climate change on migration from rural to urban areas in India, and identifying areas prone to climate change to create a “climate-risk atlas and mitigate potential impacts”. Ensuring the effective implementation of the Provisions of the Panchayats (Extension to the Scheduled Areas) Act, 1996 (PESA Act) and the Forest Rights Act (2006); and realigning Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) subjects with environmental issues to re-focus from urban to rural areas; encouraging plantation in arid regions using a “1-litre water technique for agroforestry” in addition to crops, were other suggestions, it said. The Commission said it will further deliberate on the various suggestions to finalise its recommendations to be sent to the government on addressing various challenges aggravated by climate change.
Fields of Mistria ’s one big problem is that its day cycle is really quick — time moves fast, and before you know it, it’s 2 a.m. and you’ve passed out in the mines. The big new update released on Nov. 18 doesn’t adjust the cycle at all, but it has one new feature that I’ve found pretty helpful: animal mounts. If you’ve met certain requirements, you’ll be able to unlock a purple horse called Mistmare. After a windstorm, Hayden will ask for help in finding his weathervane, and while you look for it, you’ll stumble on a new statue. That’s where you’ll unlock Mistmare for 100 essence. There are customization options that’ll come later, but the benefits of Mistmare are immediate. She’s a horse, and horses are faster than humans. You can ride her anywhere outside, which is wildly helpful for getting around Fields of Mistria ’s big map more quickly. Again, it doesn’t solve the game’s problem with short days, but I’ve found myself passing out much , much less when I stay too late in the mines; I just jump on Mistmare and rush back to the comforts of my own bed instead of crawling through Mistria at a walking speed that feels like a glacier’s pace when you’re racing the clock. According to the Fields of Mistria wiki, the length of an in-game day is 12 minutes and 30 seconds of real-world time. It goes by especially fast when you’ve got a lot of animals to tend to; it’s very easy to spend half of the day going from barn to barn collecting eggs or milk, petting the animals, then feeding them. Put that on top of a relatively slow walk speed and you may find little time to do other chores, like watering and harvesting crops, fighting monsters in the mines, or growing relationships with the other Mistrian residents. Mistmare can’t help in a lot of those areas, save decreasing the time it takes to get around the town, but she is helpful for harvesting crops, too: After unlocking Mistmare, you can unlock other abilities by giving essence to the horse statue. Two hundred essence increases your mount’s movement speed by 10%, while 190 essence will give your mount the ability to harvest crops and dig spots simply by running over them. No extra clicks! (Unrelatedly, 205 essence lets you ride any large animal that you’ve got more than five hearts with.) Overall, Mistmare is a small part of the big update, but one that’s been a perfect quality-of-life improvement that’s made the already exceptional early access game even better. Alongside this adjustment, the big addition is romance: You can now earn up to six hearts with single residents, plus there’s a new, romantic Shooting Star Festival in summer. I’m in spring in my game, so I’ve yet to try out the festival, but I’m also working on romancing March, Celine, and Juniper to invite one of them to join me on the mountain peak. I’ve yet to trigger any new romance quests — I’m stuck at five hearts with all three — but I’ve enjoyed seeing new dialogue while working my way through the seasons. Fields of Mistria is still in early access, and NPC Studio expects the game to stay there for at least a year. Beyond the big content updates, the studio issues smaller ones that fix bugs and such.
