Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday hailed the decisive mandate in favour of BJP-led Mahayuti in Maharashtra Assembly elections as a victory of a united OBC, SC and ST community against the divisive forces, alluding to the Congress-led INDIA bloc which has alleged that there is a threat to the Constitution and reservations under NDA rule. He reiterated the “Ek Hai to Safe Hai” slogan propagated by him and the BJP in the elections, underlining that as long as it is upheld India will march unhindered towards becoming a developed nation. Assembly Election Results Live Updates Maharashtra Election Results Jharkhand Election Results Bypoll Election Results In his victory speech at the BJP headquarters here, Prime Minister Modi underlined that this victory soon after winning in Haryana polls is a mandate for development, good governance and real social justice, and a strong rebuff to “falsehood, ulterior designs and duplicity”. “Ek Hai to Safe Hai. This has become the Maha-mantra of the nation. Congress and its ecosystem had thought that by lying in the name of the Constitution and reservations they would be able to divide SC/ST/OBC into fragments. Maharashtra has negated this. It has vociferously said, ‘Ek Hai to Safe Hai. It has taught a lesson to divisive forces,” Modi said. He asserted that the ST, OBC and SCs have all voted for BJP-NDA. “This verdict is a strong attack on the INDIA bloc view of dividing the nation. Maharashtra has given a befitting reply. We also combine development and heritage as we move ahead,” the prime minister said. Modi maintained that good governance of the BJP governments at the Centre and in several states has won three consecutive victories in Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Haryana, Gujarat, Goa and now Maharashtra (for NDA) as well as the NDA at the Centre. In “In the last 50 years, no party or any pre-poll alliance has won such a massive victory (in Maharashtra). This is also the third consecutive time that any BJP alliance has been blessed by the people of Maharashtra. Again, this is the third time that BJP has emerged as the largest party in the state. This is historic and a stamp on the governance model of BJP,” Modi said, adding that BJP alone has got more seats than all the Opposition combined. The prime minister claimed that when it comes to good governance people only have faith in the NDA. “To choose stability consecutively for the third time shows the maturity of the people of Maharashtra. In between some people tried to create disturbance by deceiving us. Voters have punished them,” Modi said. Paying obeisance to Shiv Sena founder Bala Saheb Thackeray and Veer Savarkar, the prime minister alleged that Congress has done a great disservice by dividing SS for its political gains. “Maharashtra has also exposed the two-facedness of Aghadi. Bala Saheb Thackeray left behind a major legacy. Congress broke his party into two factions... It has also insulted Veer Savarkar. Though for getting votes, it temporarily stopped abusing him,” he said. The prime minister described Congress as a “parasite party” and maintained it has been decimated in Maharashtra. “The fact is that Congress has become a parasite party; it sinks its ally with it. The strike rate of Aghadi parties is less than 20%. Congress lost 4 out 5 seats it contested. Its allies also performed like it,” Modi said, adding, “The urban naxalism of Congress is posing a challenge in front of the country. Everybody has to understand this truth about the Congress.” The prime minister launched a scathing attack on Congress, alleging that it has failed to gauge the mood of the nation and is underestimating the voter. “The voter does not want instability. The voter does not like those for whom it is ‘Kursi (power)-first’,” he said. The voter is also keeping a close eye on the performance of parties in various states they are in power. “In Karnataka, Telangana and Himachal Pradesh , people can see how Congress governments are betraying the mandate of the people. You will notice this in Punjab (AAP ruled) too. Hence, the people have trashed the hypocrisy of Congress (in Maharashtra),” Modi said. The prime minister also took on the Opposition for alleging the Constitution is under threat. “Another message of this verdict is that only one Constitution will work in this country- the Constitution of Babasaheb Ambedkar. Anybody who talks about another Constitution will be defeated. In Jammu and Kashmir, another attempt to restore Article 370 has been made. Maharashtra’s verdict has shown this will not work. Congress should hear it with open ears that no force can bring back Article 370,” Modi said. He charged Congress with sowing the “seeds of appeasement”, saying this is a big betrayal of the people and the Constitution. “Congress played this game- made laws for appeasement, ignoring even the Supreme Court- for decades. The Wakf Board is one example of it. In 2014, while relinquishing power they handed over some properties around Delhi. Wakf Law has no place in Ambedkar’s Constitution. But Congress created Wakf law for appeasement,” Modi said. The Wakf Board Bill is with the Joint Parliamentary Committee and may come up for discussion in the winter session of Parliament starting on November 25. He alleged that the “royal family” of Congress, alluding to Nehru-Gandhis- is trying to create caste divisions by spreading the poison of caste to satiate its hunger for power. “It has become difficult for committed workers to function in Congress as serving the interest of the family has become primary. Its Shahi family cannot stay out of power. Going to the South and abusing the North, going to North and abusing the South; going abroad and abusing the country,” Modi said. Constituent change in S&P Sri Lanka 20 IndexIn a nail-biting election battle, Maharashtra Congress president Nana Patole emerged victorious in the Sakoli assembly constituency by a razor-thin margin. Patole secured 96,795 votes, narrowly outpacing BJP challenger Avinash Brahmankar, who garnered 96,587 votes. Independent candidate Somadatta Karanjekar lagged significantly with 18,309 votes. The Carter Center announced Sunday that his father died at his home in Plains, Georgia, surrounded by family. His death comes about a year after his wife of 77 years, Rosalynn, passed away. The Carter Center will provide updates about ceremonies and activities to honor the life of President Carter as they become available here and soon on the official Carter Family Tribute Site ( https://t.co/Tg5UZt7kPV ). Read our statement: https://t.co/CNBUBpffPz — The Carter Center (@CarterCenter) December 29, 2024 Despite receiving hospice care at the time, he attended the memorials for Rosalynn while sitting in a wheelchair, covered by a blanket. He was also wheeled outside on Oct. 1 to watch a military flyover in celebration of his 100th birthday. The Carter Center said in February 2023 that the former president and his family decided he would no longer seek medical treatment following several short hospital stays for an undisclosed illness. Carter became the longest-living president in 2019, surpassing George H.W. Bush, who died at age 94 in 2018. Carter also had a long post-presidency, living 43 years following his White House departure. RELATED STORY: Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter: A love story for the ages Before becoming president Carter began his adult life in the military, getting a degree at the U.S. Naval Academy, and rose to the rank of lieutenant. He then studied reactor technology and nuclear physics at Union College and served as senior officer of the pre-commissioning crew on a nuclear submarine. Following the death of his father, Carter returned to Georgia to tend to his family's farm and related businesses. During this time, he became a community leader by serving on local boards. He used this experience to elevate him to his first elected office in 1962 in the Georgia Senate. After losing his first gubernatorial election in 1966, he won his second bid in 1970, becoming the state’s 76th governor. As a relative unknown nationally, Carter used the nation’s sour sentiment toward politics to win the Democratic nomination. He then bested sitting president Gerald Ford in November 1976 to win the presidency. Carter battles high inflation, energy crisis With the public eager for a change following the Watergate era, Carter took a more hands-on approach to governing. This, however, meant he became the public face of a number of issues facing the U.S. in the late 1970s, most notably America’s energy crisis. He signed the Department of Energy Organization Act, creating the first new cabinet role in government in over a decade. Carter advocated for alternative energy sources and even installed solar panels on the White House roof. During this time, the public rebuked attempts to ration energy. Amid rising energy costs, inflation soared nearly 9% annually during Carter's presidency. This led to a recession before the 1980 election. Carter also encountered the Iran Hostage Crisis in the final year of his presidency when 52 American citizens were captured. An attempt to rescue the Americans failed in April 1980, resulting in the death of eight service members. With compounding crises, Carter lost in a landslide to Ronald Reagan in 1980 as he could only win six states. Carter’s impact after leaving the White House Carter returned to Georgia and opened the Carter Center, which is focused on national and international issues of public policy – namely conflict resolution. Carter and the Center have been involved in a number of international disputes, including in Syria, Israel, Mali and Sudan. The group has also worked to independently monitor elections and prevent elections from becoming violent. Carter and his wife were the most visible advocates for Habitat for Humanity. The organization that helps build and restore homes for low- and middle-income families has benefited from the Carters’ passion for the organization. Habitat for Humanity estimates Carter has worked alongside 104,000 volunteers in 14 countries to build 4,390 houses. “Like other Habitat volunteers, I have learned that our greatest blessings come when we are able to improve the lives of others, and this is especially true when those others are desperately poor or in need,” Carter said in a Q&A on the Habitat for Humanity website. Carter also continued teaching Sunday school at Maranatha Baptist Church in his hometown well into his 90s. Attendees would line up for hours, coming from all parts of the U.S., to attend Carter’s classes. Carter is survived by his four children.
Russian President Vladimir Putin on Saturday signed a law that allows those who sign up to fight in Ukraine to write off unpaid debts worth almost $100,000, the government announced. The new legislation will be a strong motivation for some to join up, experts said, as Russia seeks new ways to recruit fighters for the nearly three-year conflict grinding through troops. The new legislation will allow those who sign a one-year contract to fight in Ukraine after December 1 to free themselves of existing bad debts. It also covers their spouses. The law concerns debts where a court order for collection was issued and enforcement proceedings began before December 1, 2024. The total amount of unpaid debt that can be covered is 10 million rubles, around $96,000 at current rates. Parliament approved the bill earlier this month. The legislation will largely concern younger Russians of fighting age, since those in their 30s and younger are most likely to have loans. Russia has extremely high interest rates for loans and many Russians have almost no cash savings, although the proportion of home owners is relatively high. "Previously (for those fighting) there was only provision for taking repayment holidays on loans," Sergei Krivenko of advocacy group Citizen Army Law told Vazhniye Istorii Telegram channel. The new legislation applies to those who are conscripted for national service and those mobilised for the so-called "special military operation", Krivenko said. Conscripts cannot be sent to the front line but can choose to sign a contract to join the professional army and be sent to fight in Ukraine. Russian authorities "are strengthening the motivation to sign a contract," political analyst Georgy Bovt wrote on Telegram. The legislation provides "another way to get rid of an unbearable burden of credit, at least for several hundred thousand people," Bovt wrote. Over 13 million Russians have three or more loans, according to a central bank report released last month covering the first two quarters. This was up 20 percent on the same period last year. The average amount owed by those with three or more loans is 1.4 million rubles ($13,400 at current rates). Many start with a bank loan and then apply for further loans from microfinance organisations. Russians serving on the front line are already paid far more than the national average. Ukraine also has legislation allowing those fighting to get preferential terms for loans and in some cases to write off debts. bur/twNEW YORK (AP) — U.S. stocks rose to records Friday after data suggested the job market remains solid enough to keep the economy going, but not so strong that it raises immediate worries about inflation . The S&P 500 climbed 0.2%, just enough top the all-time high set on Wednesday, as it closed a third straight winning week in what looks to be one of its best years since the 2000 dot-com bust. The Dow Jones Industrial Average dipped 123.19 points, or 0.3%, while the Nasdaq composite rose 0.8% to set its own record.
