Even as some of President-elect Donald Trump's Cabinet picks have drawn intense scrutiny, his intended treasury secretary nominee Scott Bessent appears to have a smoother path, lawmakers told USA TODAY. Bessent, a hedge-fund manager who served as the Soros Fund Management chief investment officer until 2015, has only met with a few lawmakers after Trump announced his selection last month. But that hasn't worried Republicans, who will have a 53-47 majority in the Senate next year. Sen. Markwayne Mullin, R-Okla., said from what he’s heard, Bessent appears to have a “very clear path” to confirmation. “I had a very good meeting with him. I didn’t know much about him before,” said Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa. The GOP senator serves on the Senate Finance Committee, which typically holds nomination hearings for treasury secretaries. Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, who also serves on the Finance Committee, said he had “no hesitation about him.” “I'm looking forward to visiting with him,” he said, adding that Bessent “Doesn't appear to have a lot of controversy.” Bessent's backing among Senate Republicans comes after former Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., withdrew his nomination to be Trump's attorney general last month. The move came after it became clear there were not enough Republicans willing to support him. Pete Hegseth, Trump's pick for defense secretary, has faced questions after he was accused of sexual assault, excessive drinking and other allegations he has denied . Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Trump's choice for the secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services, has also drawn criticism for spreading misinformation and conspiracy theories on vaccines, COVID-19 and more. Still, Senate Republicans have largely supported both Hegseth and Kennedy. But in picking Bessent, Trump – despite his anti-establishment rhetoric and calls to "drain the swamp" – chose a less ideological, more conventional financier for the post. With a Wall Street pedigree, Bessent made a name for himself by betting against the British pound in 1992, which netted a profit of more than $1 billion for Soros. His hedge fund, Key Square Capital, also made money by betting that U.S. inflation in 2022 would prove longer lasting than the Federal Reserve had predicted. However, Bessent hasn't won over every voice on the right. His consideration by Trump for the position initially drew some criticism from Elon Musk, the billionaire appointed by Trump to co-head the newly formed Department of Government Efficiency. “Bessent is a business-as-usual choice,” wrote Musk on X . “Business-as-usual is driving America bankrupt, so we need change one way or another.” A Yale graduate, Bessent, 62, has supported Trump’s economic policy of deregulation for businesses, imposing tariffs on some of America's top trading partners and tax cuts. Trump hailed Bessent as “a strong advocate of the America First Agenda” in his announcement on Nov. 22. If confirmed by the Senate, Bessent would take over a high-level Cabinet position charged with advising the president on matters related to financial, economic and tax policy. Plenty of other Republican lawmakers were also quick to heap praise on him. Sen. Tommy Tuberville, R-Ala., told USA TODAY Bessent “one of the smartest guys I've known.” “I've known him about 15 years. He's gonna be a great secretary of treasury,” he said. “He understands not just domestic finance, but also international finance and that's what we need.” Bessent could also make history if confirmed to the post: He would be the first openly gay treasury secretary, and he would be the first openly LGBTQ Senate-confirmed Cabinet member to serve in a Republican administration. Even some Democrats were measured in their opinion of Bessent, who hosted a fundraiser for then-Vice President Al Gore when he was running for president in 2000. “I’m going to hear him out,” said Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore., the current chair of the Senate Finance Committee. But Wyden was critical of Bessent’s support for tariffs. In a Nov. 15 opinion piece for Fox News, Bessent backed the use of tariffs, which were the centerpiece of Trump's economic campaign promises. His proposed tariffs have included 60% on imports from China and 10 to 20% on imports from other trading partners. “For too long, the conventional wisdom has rejected the use of tariffs as a tool of both economic and foreign policy. However, like Alexander Hamilton, we should not be afraid to use the power of tariffs to improve the livelihoods of American families and businesses.” Wyden said he believes the tariffs will spark further inflation in the U.S.: “Trump has told the American people that it's gonna be paid for by foreign countries. That's inaccurate. It's gonna be paid for by our workers and consumers.” Trump during an interview with "Meet the Press" that aired on Sunday said he can't guarantee American families won't pay more because of tariffs implemented against foreign countries. Sen. Cory Booker, D-N.J., said he would give all candidates a fair shake. “I’m not saying no on anybody. I'm gonna give everybody a thorough vetting.” S wapna Venugopal Ramaswamy is a White House Correspondent for USA TODAY. You can follow her on X @SwapnaVenugopal
Israel Vazquez, three-time world champion boxer, dies from cancer at 46By JUAN A. LOZANO, Associated Press HOUSTON (AP) — An elaborate parody appears to be behind an effort to resurrect Enron, the Houston-based energy company that exemplified the worst in American corporate fraud and greed after it went bankrupt in 2001. If its return is comedic, some former employees who lost everything in Enron’s collapse aren’t laughing. “It’s a pretty sick joke and it disparages the people that did work there. And why would you want to even bring it back up again?” said former Enron employee Diana Peters, who represented workers in the company’s bankruptcy proceedings. Here’s what to know about the history of Enron and the purported effort to bring it back. Once the nation’s seventh-largest company, Enron filed for bankruptcy protection on Dec. 2, 2001, after years of accounting tricks could no longer hide billions of dollars in debt or make failing ventures appear profitable. The energy company’s collapse put more than 5,000 people out of work, wiped out more than $2 billion in employee pensions and rendered $60 billion in Enron stock worthless. Its aftershocks were felt throughout the energy sector. Twenty-four Enron executives , including former CEO Jeffrey Skilling , were eventually convicted for their roles in the fraud. Enron founder Ken Lay’s convictions were vacated after he died of heart disease following his 2006 trial. On Monday — the 23rd anniversary of the bankruptcy filing — a company representing itself as Enron announced in a news release that it was relaunching as a “company dedicated to solving the global energy crisis.” It also posted a video on social media, advertised on at least one Houston billboard and a took out a full-page ad in the Houston Chronicle In the minute-long video that was full of generic corporate jargon, the company talks about “growth” and “rebirth.” It ends with the words, “We’re back. Can we talk?” Enron’s new website features a company store, where various items featuring the brand’s tilted “E” logo are for sale, including a $118 hoodie. In an email, company spokesperson Will Chabot said the new Enron was not doing any interviews yet, but that “We’ll have more to share soon.” Signs point to the comeback being a joke. In the “terms of use and conditions of sale” on the company’s website, it says “the information on the website about Enron is First Amendment protected parody, represents performance art, and is for entertainment purposes only.” Documents filed with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office show that College Company, an Arkansas-based LLC, owns the Enron trademark. The co-founder of College Company is Connor Gaydos, who helped create a joke conspiracy theory that claims all birds are actually surveillance drones for the government. Peters said that since learning about the “relaunch” of Enron, she has spoken with several other former employees and they are also upset by it. She said the apparent stunt was “in poor taste.” “If it’s a joke, it’s rude, extremely rude. And I hope that they realize it and apologize to all of the Enron employees,” Peters said. Peters, who is 74 years old, said she is still working in information technology because “I lost everything in Enron, and so my Social Security doesn’t always take care of things I need done.” “Enron’s downfall taught us critical lessons about corporate ethics, accountability, and the consequences of unchecked ambition. Enron’s legacy was the employees in the trenches. Leave Enron buried,” she said. Follow Juan A. Lozano on X at https://x.com/juanlozano70Titans S Julius Wood suspended 6 games for PEDs

Promising review: "Like you, when I first came across this, I was hesitant because of the price. It's a bit steep, I thought to myself. But then, after another night of bathtime with two towels on the ground to soak up the water my child had splashed all over, I took the plunge and bought it. And definitely worth it a million times over. My child LOVES the extra space for toys and I love the water staying in the tub. I definitely and highly suggest buying it. You won't be disappointed! A set of sheet holders for the folks who are running marathons in their sleep only to wake in the morning with bedsheets that are pretty much everywhere but on the bed. Not convinced? Even if you sleepwalk and SHOOK your entire mattress, the sheets would still stay put. Promising review: "I have an adjustable base. My issues have always been with the top sheet. They don't stay tucked in, and sheets shift. These didn't catch my eye at first. They looked bulky and cumbersome. All I kept seeing were things I had unsuccessfully used. I gave these a second look and decided to buy them. I've had them on my bed a week now and I'm impressed! NO sheet shifting, and they stay tidy with minimal effort to make the bed. These appear to be sturdy as well. I know they are a little pricey for sheet holders, but these are worth it. " — Joni Get it from Amazon for $59.99 . 8. A pack of carborundum sponges because these are the heavy hitters you'll want for stains and gunk that no other sponge is strong enough to handle. Promising review: "Nice and thin. You'll find so many more uses for these around the house than just getting stuff off the underside of cookware! I had hard, scaly water deposits on the glass surrounding our powder room faucet (one of those fancy, highfalutin modern-looking things). I've tried everything for four years to get this stuff off. One day I thought, maybe i'll try my sponges. Took it all off super easily!!!! Faucet looks like new. My only rec is to spot-test your item first before using it because it will scratch certain surfaces if you scrub too aggressively (for example, it gets the burned-on, weird stuff off of the bottom of my fave Our Place pan, but I rubbed too hard in one spot and it took the color right off lol)." — Hoarder Get an eight-pack from Amazon for $7.99+ (available in two sponge thicknesses). 13. Promising review: "I’m perimenopausal, so apparently, that means I break out all the time. But this little bit of magic actually does what it says. I cover the red angry areas. Leave it a few minutes to dry, then put some concealer over. Not only do they stay covered, but when I remove my makeup. The spots are soothed and healing up. As I said, magic!✨" — Vanessa H. Promising review: "I normally do not write reviews but had to for this one... I wore these white sneakers all over Scotland and London for two weeks, so they were far from white upon my return (I wish I had taken a before pic prior to washing them). I ordered this gadget and threw them in the wash not expecting much but willing to give a try prior to replacing them. They’re white again! An outlet extender if your bed, couch, cabinets, etc., can't lie flat against the wall because a pesky cord is in the way. This adapter has three outlets, so you can push your bed flat against the wall and still plug in the charger. Promising review: "I have been looking for a solution that would allow for a nightstand and also a dresser to be pushed up against a wall even with things plugged into the outlet behind that furniture. I FOUND IT. This wall outlet extender does exactly what it says it will do. I have a fan, clock radio, and watch charger plugged into it and can still move the nightstand right up against the wall. The light on the dresser no longer forces the dresser to be out a couple of inches; it, too, can be pushed right up against the wall, and the cord is not in danger of getting crushed and becoming a fire hazard. A game changer! I will be ordering a few more." — Lynda L. Get a two-pack from Amazon for $7.58+ . 18. Promising review: "Bought for working out because I’d rather use my cup than water bottles, and honestly, I was surprised to see that it works. The straw is longer than expected. The only flaw is the straw is hard to get in if you have ice already in your cup." — lisa Get it from Amazon for $9.99 (available in four colors). 24. Some aligner removal tools to make the surprisingly and unnecessarily difficult task of removing your aligner, well, easy! This tool gently hooks underneath your aligner so you can stop sticking your dirty fingers in your mouth (and grossing out everyone at the table with you). Promising review: "Ok, so I do not use these every time I take out my Invisalign, but I ALWAYS have one of these with me because, while 8 times out of 10, I can pull them out myself, there are those occasions where for whatever reason, I can get my Invisalign out almost all the way but then sometimes my right side gets stuck on the last button, and it gets painful, almost like a tooth being pulled. When that happens, I get this bad boy out, and I am good to go. The size is perfect, as it's easy for me to use despite my long-fingered, large hands, yet it's small enough to fit in my Invisalign case. Also, since there are two, I keep one at home in my bathroom medicine cabinet and the other in the Invisalign case that I carry in my toiletry bag, which, of course, I carry with me all the time since I brush or at the very least use mouthwash every time I eat anything or drink something that isn't clear. I absolutely recommend these if, even on rare occasions, you have trouble removing your Invisalign." — Elizabeth B. A pack of towel clips that'll prevent kids and pets from pulling down the towel. Or, maybe you have neither of those things, yet your hand and kitchen towels always end up on the ground. Promising review: "This clip is amazing. No more towels falling on the floor. It was becoming a routine thing since my cat thinks it's fun to pull the kitchen towels off the oven. Not now, bad kitty! Great product...wish I had bought one sooner!" — Joanna Get a three-pack from Amazon for $12.99 . 27. A Lego night-light if you dream about stepping on Lego bricks in your sleep. We have never seen a happier boy!!!! It has two settings, and they are memory settings. One changes colors and one is a brighter white light. They go off after a period of time and, if bumped, come back on. It is silicone. If it is dropped, no worries. It’ll be perfectly fine!! The Mark IIC+ is pure “Vintage Boogie” and based on the original Mark II (now called the MarkII-A) design, the world’s first “Dual Mode” amplifier containing independent performance modes dedicated to clean and overdrive sounds. The IIC+ model represents the 3rd generation of that game-changing single channel/dual mode layout and includes all the refinements made to that original format over its nearly five influential years. It was also the last model in its family, as the subsequent model would contain three performance modes and be dubbed the MARK III. The IIC+’s single row of controls is shared by its two modes (preamps), one for Rhythm(clean) and one for Lead (overdrive). Independent, though still interactive, sets of gain and volume controls help optimize each gain structure while shared Tone controls handle the broad stroke voicing. Fine-tuning of the sounds is accomplished by the PULL SHIFT voicing features – some Mode specific – fitted to the simple controls and further shaping via the on-board 5-Band Graphic EQ.Though the “Q” of the individual Bands (Slider Pot frequencies) is fairly wide around their CenterPoints, they provide a surprising degree of surgical-level sculpting quickly and musically. The Rear Panel of the C+ provides the important features that keep this amp as relevant as ever 40 years after its initial run. Global PRESENCE and REVERB controls are centered foreasy navigation from the Front in stage environments. A series, tube buffered Effects Loop provides a seamless interface for your time-based processing. The Power Select switch at the far right (left from the Front) allows for your choice of the full 75 watts of “SIMUL-CLASS” power for richness, authority, and max headroom or “CLASS A” for 25 watts of reduced power and low end along with easier, smoother power clip at lower volumes. One 8Ohm and two 4 OhmSpeaker Outputs provide for a wide array of cabinet impedance matching. And though not a compensated Direct Output for Consoles or Interfaces, a SLAVE tap off the speaker outputs captures the entire sound of the amp – preamp and power section – to produce a non-compensated feed for IRReaders or external processors that might even serve an era-appropriate “dry/wet/wet” rig. Out of production for four decades, we welcome back this icon and celebrate its impact on the incredible guitar heroes and timeless recordings they made during one of rock guitar’s biggest decades. The Mark IIC+ legacy is one we don’t take lightly or for granted and recreating it in today’s world with today’s available components and rigorous worldwide Compliance Regulations was no easy feat. However, we are just as proud and excited about this iteration as we were about the first one that was produced for less than two years, four decades ago. Made in close collaboration and with significant input from , the Jimmy Page EDS-1275 uses new 3D scanning technology to aid in handcrafting an effective clone of his original EDS-1275. There are very few guitars that can claim to be as instantly recognizable and iconic as Jimmy Page’s 1969 EDS-1275 Doubleneck. The photos of him playing it on stage with Led Zeppelin are indelible to rock ’n’ roll history. While has been making doubleneck electric guitars since 1958, Jimmy was the player who defined the EDS-1275 from the day it was delivered to him. Introducing the Jimmy Page EDS-1275 Doubleneck VOS, now part of the Gibson Custom core lineup and built to the exact specifications of Jimmy’s iconic EDS-1275 Doubleneck. The Jimmy Page EDS-1275 features a double-cutaway one-piece mahogany body that provides exceptional access to the full length of both the12-string and six-string mahogany necks. Both necks have long tenons and are hide glue fit, and the neck profiles are recreated from 3D scans of the necks on the original guitar. The necks are both capped with bound Indian rosewood fretboards. Each fretboard is equipped with 20 authentic medium jumbo frets and adorned with aged cellulose nitrate parallelogram inlays. The fretboards of both necks have a 12” radius, which is perfect for both playing chords as well as for string bending while soloing. The 18 tuners are Kluson double line, double ring style, just like those found on the original guitar, and even the headstocks feature the correct 17-degree angle and specific logo stylization found on Jimmy’s EDS-1275. The electronics are just as authentic and deliver all of the sonic character of Jimmy’s legendary EDS-1275. Two uncovered Jimmy Page EDS-1275 Custombuckers with double black bobbins and Alnico 5 magnets are used for the two six-string pickups, while a covered pair is installed on the 12-string neck. Of course, the two volume and two tone controls use CTS potentiometers and period-correct ceramic disc capacitors, and the pickup select switch, neck select switch, and output jack are all from Switchcraft. Here is your opportunity to own a clone of Jimmy Page’s famous EDS-1275, identical to how it appeared on the day that Jimmy first received the guitar. A Gibson Custom hardshell case is included, along with a vintage leather strap, and a certificate of authenticity with a photo from famed photographer Barrie Wentzell. Recreation of the EDS-1275 used by Jimmy Page made using 3D scans of the original guitar, one piece mahogany body, mahogany six and 12-string necks with custom Jimmy Page profiles, Indian rosewood fretboards, Jimmy Page Custombucker pickups with Alnico 5 magnets and double black bobbins, Gibson Custom hardshell case Taking a Squier Affinity and Mini Precision Bass, one reader created a super-versatile instrument for looping that he can pick, pluck, tap, and slap. I've been using a multitrack looper with a guitar and an octave pedal, which was okay for simple bass parts, but didn’t give me thick strings and I couldn’t slap with it. So I decided to build a double-neck prototype specifically for looping, with a 6-string guitar and a 4-string bass. Since building the necks would be the hardest part, I looked around for instruments with bolt-on necks I could reuse. Squier makes an Affinity Stratocaster and a Mini Precision Bass which were affordable and had matching fretboards, so I bought those. It was also cheaper to reuse the electronics and hardware that came with them, rather than buying everything separately. Using two precut instrument bodies saved the burden of having to route cavities for the electronics. My plan was to design my own body from scratch. As I debated which neck should go on top, how far apart they should be, and whether to line up the nuts or the saddles, I realized there was actually enough wood there to make a double neck body, which saved me the work of recreating the neck pockets, etc. Putting the guitar on top made barre chords much more comfortable, and the 28.6" bass scale meant I could still reach the first fret easily. After stripping the paint with a heat gun, I ran both bodies through a table saw, glued them together, and thinned them to 1 3/8". Then I created an offset body shape, a new arm bevel, and reshaped the three cutaways. The pickguards are both original, with the guitar side cut down to make a yin and yang shape. The controls are volume and tone for each neck, using the original knobs. I moved the jack to the back and upgraded it to stereo so the guitar and bass signals can run through separate effects chains. Note the location of the jack on the back of the extended-shape body. It’s unconventional but practical. My top concerns were weight and ergonomics. Many doublenecks are around 12 to 13 pounds and 18" wide. I knew I would never play something that big, no matter how good it sounded. To that end, I saved weight everywhere and tracked everything to the gram in a spreadsheet. (That’s also the reason I chose a fixed bridge instead of a vibrato.) I ultimately used a wipe-on gel stain to keep the weight down further. Stripping the paint from the factory saved 5 ounces! The final playable weight is 9 pounds, 5 ounces, and 15 1/4" wide at the lower bout. This has been pretty manageable, however, there is some neck dive because of the tuners. I’m taking everything I’ve learned from this prototype and designing a new doubleneck, which will be headless. I believe I can shed another pound and eliminate the neck dive that way. You can watch my entire build on . Twenty-seven-time Grammy winner Alison Krauss reveals new tour featuring Jerry Douglas. Their first tour together in a decade next year. These Are The Most Desired Christmas Gifts In The US This Year(CNN) — President-elect Donald Trump said on Tuesday he will direct the Department of Justice to “vigorously pursue the death penalty” after President Joe Biden on Monday commuted the death sentences of 37 federal inmates to life in prison. “As soon as I am inaugurated, I will direct the Justice Department to vigorously pursue the death penalty to protect American families and children from violent rapists, murderers, and monsters. We will be a Nation of Law and Order again!” Trump wrote on Truth Social, echoing his long-standing advocacy for use of the death penalty , which was part of his tough-on-crime rhetoric during the 2024 campaign. After Biden’s commutation of most federal death row inmates – which Trump on Truth Social said “makes no sense” – there will be just three individuals in federal prison facing the death penalty when the president-elect takes office in January. Those three remaining cases are all individuals who committed mass shootings or terrorist attacks: Robert Bowers, who killed 11 people at Pittsburgh’s Tree of Life Synagogue in 2018; Dylann Roof, a White nationalist who murdered nine people at a historically Black church in Charleston, South Carolina, in 2015; and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, one of two brothers responsible for the Boston Marathon bombing in 2013. Biden’s clemency decisions cannot be reversed when Trump takes office, but the president-elect’s Justice Department could resume seeking the death penalty in future cases. Throughout his campaign, Trump’s advocacy for greater use of the death penalty was part of his hardline commitment to reducing violent crime and drug and human trafficking. In his speech launching his 2024 presidential campaign, he pledged to seek the death penalty for drug dealers. He said last year he would ask Congress to pass a law that “anyone caught trafficking children across our border” should receive the death penalty. During the final weeks of the 2024 campaign, Trump repeatedly vowed to push for the death penalty for any migrant who kills a US citizen or a law enforcement officer. There were mixed reactions to Biden’s commutations on Monday. While some families of those whose sentences were commuted expressed relief, some families of the victims were angry. The widow of Bryan Hurst, an Ohio police officer killed in 2005 by Daryl Lawrence, whose sentence was commuted on Monday, said in a statement provided to CNN affiliate WBNS that her family is disappointed by Biden’s decision. Lawrence “made a decision to choose violence. He knew the potential consequences and chose to murder regardless,” Marissa Gibson said in her statement. “All I can hope is that his nearly 20 years in prison has made him a changed man.” Executions by the US government were uncommon prior to Trump’s first term. Only three federal executions had occurred since 1988 before Trump’s then-Attorney General William Barr announced in 2019 the federal government would resume executions. In 2020, the final year of Trump’s first term, the federal government executed 10 individuals , the most executions by the federal government since 1896 and more than all 50 states combined that year. Outside of the federal system, there are over 2,000 people in the United States who were convicted in state courts and put on death row, according to the Death Penalty Information Center . Biden has no power to stop those death sentences. The-CNN-Wire TM & © 2024 Cable News Network, Inc., a Warner Bros. Discovery Company. All rights reserved.

Torrid (NYSE:CURV) Reports Sales Below Analyst Estimates In Q3 Earnings, Stock Drops 20.1%
With technical prowess and considerable style, Marta danced around two sliding defenders, outwitted a goalkeeper and calmly scored as another player rushed forward in desperation to stop her. It was more Marta Magic. That goal last weekend helped propel the Orlando Pride into Saturday's National Women's Soccer League championship game against the Washington Spirit. Barbra Banda also scored in the Pride's 3-2 semifinal victory over the Kansas City Current . While Banda has had an incredible first season with the Pride, captain Marta has been the talisman that has helped lead the team in its remarkable turnaround this year. The last time the Pride were in the NWSL playoffs was in 2017 — Marta's first year with the club. But this season they nearly went undefeated, going 23 games without a loss to start the season before losing 2-0 to the Portland Thorns with just two regular-season games left. “I think because of the way that we did it, during this season, from beginning to now, it’s something very special that I’ve never had before with any other club that I’ve played for," Marta said. "Plus year by year, we see in America, strong competition. This is the best league in the world. And you never know what’s going to happen, and it’s hard to keep winning the games, being in the first place almost like the whole season. That’s why it’s really different and so special.” Marta’s goal was the latest gasp-inducing moment in a stellar career filled with them. Known by just her first name, the 38-year-old is a six-time FIFA world player of the year. "Let's see if tomorrow I can do something similar — or even better," Marta said on Friday. Her teammate Kylie Strom chimed in: “That was the greatest goal I've ever witnessed, hands down." Appropriate. Earlier this year, FIFA announced that the best goal in women's soccer each year would earn the Marta Award. In a lighthearted moment the day before the title match, Marta was asked if she thought it was possible she might give the award to herself. “You guys need to decide, because who votes for the best goal in the year? It’s you. It’s the people in the public. So it should be really interesting, like Marta’s Award goes to Marta!” she said with a laugh. Marta has played in six World Cups for Brazil and played this summer in her sixth Olympics, winning a silver medal after falling in the final to the United States . She previously said this would be her final year with the national team. But since then Brazil was named the host of the 2027 Women's World Cup. "I had a conversation with my coach, the national team coach, and I was really clear about playing in 2027. I told him it’s not my goal anymore,” she said. “But I’m always available to help the national team. And if they think I still can do something during this preparation for the World Cup, yeah, I would be happy to help them." Marta's club career started in Brazil when she was just 16. She has also played in Sweden and in the U.S. professional women's leagues that came before the NWSL. With nine regular-season goals, Marta has had one of her best seasons since she joined the Pride. “I can never pick a side, I never pick favorites — but I love to see this for Marta," U.S. coach Emma Hayes said. “Marta is someone we all like, admire and are grateful for. And that goal was just like prime Marta at her best. And so grateful for and thankful for her that she got the opportunity with another game with her team.” The Pride went 18-2-6 this season, clinching the NWSL Shield for the first trophy in club history. Orlando also set a record with 60 regular-season points to finish atop the standings. “We are sitting top of the table, but I think there still are a lot of doubters. I think there’s people out there who say, maybe this was a one-off season,” Strom said. “But we’re here to prove them all wrong. So I think we do carry a bit of that underdog mentality still with us.” The second-seeded Spirit advanced to the title match at Kansas City's CPKC Stadium last weekend on a penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw against defending champions Gotham FC. The Spirit's roster includes Trinity Rodman, a standout forward who formed the so-called “Triple Espresso” trio with Mallory Swanson and Sophia Smith for the United States at the Olympics. Mozambique’s largely deserted capital was hit yesterday by skirmishes between protesters and police, AFP reporters said, the day after the ruling party was controversially confirmed winners in recent elections. Police in armoured vehicles patrolled the centre of the city, where hundreds of protesters in small, scattered groups threw objects and started fires. Makeshift roadblocks on major thoroughfares were set alight on Monday evening, covering the city with thick smoke, soon after the country’s highest court confirmed the victory of the ruling Frelimo party presidential candidate Daniel Chapo. Chapo’s main challenger, exiled opposition leader Venancio Mondlane, has claimed the election was rigged, sparking fears of violence between rival party supporters. Shops, banks, supermarkets, petrol stations and public buildings meanwhile were ransacked, with their windows smashed and contents looted. Some were set on fire and reduced to smouldering rubble. “Maputo Central Hospital is operating in critical conditions, more than 200 employees have not been able to reach the site,” its director Mouzinho Saide told AFP, adding that nearly 90 people had been admitted with injuries. Forty were injured by firearms and four by knives, he added. Main roads leading to Maputo and the neighbouring city of Matola were blocked by barricades and burning tyres, while the road leading to Maputo airport was largely impassable. Most local residents stayed at home, with the few who ventured out doing to look at the damage or do last-minute Christmas shopping. Christmas Eve is normally a busy time, with large crowds in central Maputo but shops and even small neighbourhood grocery stores were closed, making petrol and bread unavailable. Public transport was also paralysed, with only ambulances and funeral vehicles running. The unrest spread to several cities in the northern part of Mozambique, local media reported, with violence and vandalism in the provinces of Cabo Delgado, Nampula, Zambezia and Tete, where opposition support is strong. More than 100 people have already died in the unprecedented post-election violence, with fears that the toll could increase after Mondlane’s claim of victory. Mozambicans are demanding “electoral truth”, he said in a Facebook post. “We must continue the fight, remain united and strong.” Monday’s confirmation of the result of the October 9 election came despite claims of irregularities from many observers. Chapo won 65.17% of the vote, more than five points lower than the initial results declared by the country’s electoral commission. In the National Assembly, Frelimo has a majority of 171 seats out of 250, down 24 from the announcement in October. “Venancio”, as Mondlane is called on the street, repeated his assertion in a social media message yesterday that the constitutional court was “legalising fraud” and “the humiliation of the people”. “We want to create a People’s Constitutional Court, which will confirm Venancio Mondlane as president,” he said of himself. “I will be sworn in and invested,” he added. Chapo, who is due to take office in mid-January, struck a conciliatory tone in his victory speech on Monday, promising to “talk to everyone”, including his main opponent. Mining disruptionGemfields Group said yesterday disruptions were possible at its largest ruby mine in Mozambique, after people torched buildings in villages nearby in escalating unrest linked to October’s disputed election. Mozambique’s top court on Monday confirmed long-ruling party Frelimo’s victory in the election that has sparked protests by opposition groups that say the vote was rigged. At least 130 people have been killed in clashes with police, according to the civil society monitoring group Plataforma Decide, and the operations of other foreign miners operating in Mozambique, including South32, have been affected. Gemfields said in a statement that “groups associated with the illegal mining and trading of rubies have taken advantage of the political unrest”. It said “instigators” had on Monday set fire to the police station in Namanhumbir, a village close to Gemfields’ Montepuez Ruby Mining Limitada (MRM) in the northern Cabo Delgado province. An MRM office, a community centre and a community radio centre built by the company in Namanhumbir were also set ablaze. “Based on the trajectory of the ongoing situation, there may be interruptions to MRM’s mining operations resulting from this unrest,” Gemfields said. In another village near MRM’s operations, a water borehole was sabotaged, and in a third village people torched the police station, the residence of a local police commander and the administrative offices of Namanhumbir district. MRM is 75% owned by Gemfields and employs about 1,400 people, the company’s website says. Frelimo has been repeatedly accused by opponents and election observers of rigging votes, although it has denied those accusations. The electoral commission has not commented on allegations of fraud in this year’s election. It’s looking like the same old song and dance right now for Zion Williamson. Shams Charania of ESPN appeared Friday on “NBA Today” and shared a pessimistic update about the New Orleans Pelicans star Williamson and the latest injury that he is nursing. Williamson is out with a hamstring issue and was initially expected to miss four-to-six weeks. But Charania now reports that Williamson could be sidelined well beyond that timeline. “I am told Zion Williamson is not remotely close to coming back to the floor,” said Charania . “He’s gonna be out a while longer. This is an injury [that is] typically a four-to-six-week injury ... But the Pelicans are bracing for him to be out beyond that point. I am told he has received multiple injections in that hamstring.” The 24-year-old Williamson was averaging 22.7 points, 8.0 rebounds, and 5.3 assists per game through his first six games for the Pelicans this season. But he strained his hamstring on Nov. 6 in a loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers and has not played since (now having missed seven games and counting). Four-to-six weeks would have Williamson returning some time around mid-December, but now it looks like the former No. 1 overall pick won’t be back in action until next calendar year. After appearing in a career-high 70 games last season and reportedly losing a good amount of weight over the summer , Williamson’s trademark injury woes are now back in a big way. The 2024 theme that was coined by the United Nations, “Amplifying the leadership of persons with disabilities for an inclusive and sustainable future,” is a powerful reminder that true progress is only possible when persons with disabilities have a seat at the table. We do recognize the efforts of the Dr. Irfaan Ali led Government in ensuring that persons with disabilities are meaningfully engaged and included in Guyana’s development. However, there is a role for other members of society to ensure that the leadership potential of persons with disabilities is maximized. Persons with disabilities have long been leaders in driving change, yet barriers like inaccessible information, an inaccessible built environment, inequitable opportunities, and stigma and discrimination continue to hinder full participation of this group. Addressing these challenges as a society is essential to building a Guyana where everyone can contribute and thrive. The Guyana Council of Organisations for Persons with Disabilities is committed to advocating for 1) the updating and enforcement of our National building Codes congruent to the Universal design and digital accessibility, ensuring everyone can fully access public spaces and engage with technology; 2) The creation of more inclusive policies and programs that promote leadership opportunities for persons with disabilities in all sectors within our society; 3) The creation of more employment opportunities for persons with disabilities in accessible and inclusive workplaces that recognize and value their contributions. “We have seen great examples of leadership from persons with disabilities to improve the lives of persons with disabilities and positively transform the disability landscape, however there’s still more work to be done to amplify their voices and break down systemic barriers,” said Ganesh Singh, programme manager of the Guyana Council of Organisations for Persons with Disabilities. We call on all Guyana to join us on this December 3 in celebrating the achievements and leadership of persons with disabilities and in building a future where their contributions are recognized and celebrated. As we celebrate this significant day we would like to take the opportunity to remind all of the international disability movement slogan “Nothing About Us Without Us”. Sincerely, Ganesh Singh Programme manager, GCOPD
