Hunger, if not starvation, was the norm. Today, supermarkets are stocked with exotic foods from all over the world. Most of it is more affordable than ever. Even after President Joe Biden’s 8% inflation, Americans spend less than 12% of our income on food, half of what they spent 100 years ago. Why? Because free markets happened. Capitalism happened. When there is rule of law and private property, and people feel secure that no thief or government will take their property, farmers find new ways to grow more on less land. Greedy entrepreneurs lower costs and deliver goods faster. Consumers have better options. Yet today many Americans trash capitalism, demanding government “fixes” to make sure everyone gets equal amounts of this and that. But it’s in countries with the most government intervention where there are empty store shelves and hungrier people. In socialist Venezuela, affordable food is hard to find. In Cuba, government was going to make everything plentiful. But people suffered so much that, to prevent starvation, the Castros broke from communist principles and rented out state-owned land to private capitalists. Millions still go hungry around the world. The cause is rarely drought or “income inequality” or colonialism, but government control. Corruption, tariffs, political self-dealing and short-sighted regulations block food from reaching those who need it most. Last week, we celebrated the Pilgrims, who learned this lesson the hard way. When they first landed in America, they tried communal living. The harvest was shared equally. That seemed fair. But it failed miserably. A few Pilgrims worked hard, but others didn’t, claiming “weakness and inability,” as William Bradford, the governor of the colony, put it. They nearly starved. Desperate, Bradford tried another approach. “Every family,” he wrote, “was assigned a parcel of land.” Private property! Capitalism! Suddenly, more pilgrims worked hard. Of course they did. Now they got to keep what they made. Bradford wrote, “It made all hands very industrious.” He spelled out the lesson “The failure of this experiment of communal service, which was tried for several years, and by good and honest men proves the emptiness of the theory ... taking away of private property, and the possession of it in community ... would make a state happy and flourishing.” Fast forward 400 years, and many Americans have forgotten what Bradford learned. I see why socialism is popular. The idea of one big, harmonious collective feels good. But it brings disaster. Family dinners already have plenty of disagreements — children fight; adults bicker. Imagine what that would be like among millions of strangers. Collectivist systems encourage dependency, stifle initiative and waste resources. The same communal conceit that nearly starved the Pilgrims destroyed lives in the Soviet Union and led to mass starvation in China. When everyone is forced into the same plan, most people will take as much as they can and produce as little as they can get away with. Economists call it the “tragedy of the commons” referring to a common plot of land, controlled by, say, sheep owners. Each has an incentive to breed more sheep, which then eat the common’s grass until all of it is gone, and everyone goes hungry. Only when the commons is divided into private property does each owner agree to limit his herd’s grazing so there will be enough for his sheep to eat tomorrow. These same principles apply to many aspects of our lives: We thrive when individuals have a deed to their property and are confident that they can keep what they create. Then they create more. That’s what the Pilgrims learned: Incentives matter. Capitalist ownership is what creates American abundance. Every Thanksgiving, I’m thankful for free markets and private property. They are the ingredients of prosperity.

He saluted their “Steadfast Faith in God, Perseverance through Centuries of Persecution and Love for this Great Country.” “This was the first time seeing a major U.S. presidential candidate address the community in this manner,” said Mariam Wahba, a Coptic Christian and research analyst with the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, a Washington-based research institute. “It was really a profound moment.” She said many Copts share the conservative social views of other Christian groups in the Republican constituency, and they may already have been Trump supporters. But the posting reinforced those bonds. Coptic bishops sent the president-elect congratulations after his victory and cited their “shared social and family values.” Some Assyrian Christians — another faith group with Middle Eastern roots — similarly bonded with Trump, whose mispronunciation of “Assyrian” at a rally created a viral video moment and drew attention to their support. Sam Darmo, a Phoenix real estate agent and co-founder of Assyrians for Trump, said many community members cited the economy, illegal immigration and other prominent voter issues. They echoed other conservative Christians’ concerns, he said, on issues such as abortion, gender identity and religious expression in public. But he said Trump supported various Middle Eastern Christians recovering from the Islamic State group’s oppressive rule. Darmo also credited Massad Boulos, father-in-law to Trump’s daughter Tiffany, for mobilizing various Middle Eastern Christian groups, including Chaldean Catholics, and other voters, particularly in Michigan, such as Muslims. “He brought all these minority groups together,” he said. “We’re hoping to continue that relationship.” But members of Middle Eastern-rooted Christian groups, and their politics, are far from monolithic, said Marcus Zacharia, founder of Progressive Copts, a program of Informed Immigrants, an organization that promotes dialogue on sensitive topics among such groups in the United States and Canada. He said many younger community members question Trump’s stances on issues such as immigration, and sense that conservatives sometimes tokenize them by focusing on the plight of persecuted Christians in the Middle East while neglecting wider issues of repression in countries there that the U.S. supports. He said there needs to be more informed dialogue across the political divide in these communities. “There is no more high time than these next four years to have that way of conducting conversations,” he said. Republicans also made an aggressive push for Amish voters , particularly in the swing state of Pennsylvania, where they are most numerous at about 92,000 (many below voting age). The GOP has made similar efforts in the past, even though researchers have found that less than 10% of them typically vote, due to their separatism from society. But Republicans used billboards, mailers, ads and door-to-door campaigner to drive turnout in Lancaster County, home base to the nation’s largest Amish settlement. On Election Day, Amish voters Samuel Stoltzfus and his wife Lillian Stoltzfus said they were supporting Trump, citing their anti-abortion beliefs. “We basically look at it as murder,” Stoltzfus, 31, said outside a polling center in the Lancaster County community of New Holland, where dozens of other members of the local Amish community voted. Trump has wavered on the issue, dismaying some abortion opponents, though many have said Republicans still align more closely to their views. Stolzfus added: “Make America great again and keep the moral values,” he said. “Let’s go back to the roots.” Steven Nolt, a history professor at Elizabethtown College in Lancaster College who studies the Amish and their voting patterns, said that while it’s too early to say definitively without further research, he doesn’t see evidence of a larger turnout this year. Lancaster County as a whole — most of which is not Amish — is a GOP stronghold that Trump won handily, though both parties’ votes edged up from 2020, according to unofficial results posted by the Pennsylvania Department of State. Trump’s biggest increases were in urban or suburban areas with few Amish, while some areas with larger Amish populations generally saw a modest increase in the Trump vote, said Nolt, director of the college’s Young Center for Anabaptist and Pietist Studies. “Bottom line, percentage-wise, not much change in the parts of Lancaster County where the Amish live,” he said. Trump directly reached out to members of the Chabad Lubavitch movement, a prominent and highly observant branch of Orthodox Judaism. Schneerson. Wearing a yarmulke, the traditional Jewish skullcap, Trump, who has Jewish family members, brought a written prayer to the Ohel and laid a small stone at the grave in keeping with tradition. The site in New York City, while particularly central to Chabad adherents, draws an array of Jewish and other visitors, including politicians. About two-thirds of Jewish voters overall supported Trump’s opponent, Democrat Kamala Harris, according to AP VoteCast, a survey of more than 120,000 voters. But the Trump campaign has made a particular outreach to Orthodox Jews, citing issues including his policies toward Israel in his first administration. Rabbi Yitzchok Minkowitz of Chabad Lubavitch of Southwest Florida said it was moving for him to see images of Trump’s visit. “The mere fact that he made a huge effort, obviously it was important to him,” he said. I’ve been doing a lot of in-depth analysis of players recently, so we’re going to go a little broader this week. Dynasty rankings shouldn’t be volatile because they’re based on long-term projections. A short stretch of success shouldn’t dramatically impact a player’s dynasty ranking, but there are scenarios where that can happen. We’re over a month into the season, which makes this a great time to evaluate preseason dynasty rankings and provide context as to why my evaluation of these players has changed. There aren’t new rankings on the way, but whenever that happens, here are 10 players that will be ranked higher. These aren’t the only ten players that will move up, but they likely will be the biggest risers up the board. They’re ordered by their previous rank, so that doesn’t mean that this would be the order if they were ranked. Jalen Johnson (Preseason Dynasty Rank: 26) I was high on Johnson after last season, but I considered that his breakout year. I knew there was more room to grow, but I didn’t expect him to take another leap like this. He has averaged 19.8 points, 9.9 rebounds, 5.5 assists, 1.3 steals, 1.1 blocks and 1.6 threes per game, all of which are career-highs. The turnovers have gone up, which was to be expected with Dejounte Murray gone. Johnson became the team’s secondary playmaker, which has inflated everything. Despite taking 37% of his shots in the restricted area, Johnson has only taken 3.2 free throws per game, which is surprising and frustrating. However, it shows that there is still plenty of room for growth, which is scary. Jalen Williams Preseason Dynasty Rank: (27) JDub has been an excellent 9-cat option since his rookie year, but he has ascended into fantasy superstardom this season. Typically, older prospects aren’t as exciting to draft because they may not have the same upside, even if they produce early on. However, Williams has been an exception to that rule. He has averaged career-highs of 22.0 points, 6.1 rebounds, 5.0 assists, 2.1 steals, 0.8 blocks and 2.1 threes per game. His usage has gone up, which can partially be attributed to Chet Holmgren’s absence, but his efficiency has only taken a small hit. JDub is the truth and will be a dominant dynasty player for a long, long time. Tari Eason (Preseason Dynasty Rank: 79) Eason’s second year in the league was plagued by injuries, which resulted in him sliding down my rankings a bit. However, he has reminded us of how good he can be in limited minutes. Eason has been a top-50 player this year with averages of 11.3 points, 6.5 rebounds, 2.1 steals, 1.0 block and 0.9 threes in just 22.9 minutes per game. The stocks have carried his value, but those numbers are sustainable for one of the best young defenders in the league. Eason and Amen Thompson have formed quite the bench duo, and it’s going to be difficult to keep them out of the starting unit for long. Walker Kessler (Preseason Dynasty Rank: 98) Utah’s unwillingness to make Kessler a full-time starter in year two was discouraging and begged the question of how highly they valued him. In year three, they have given him the job, and the fantasy production has been as good as we expected. He has averaged a double-double with three blocks per game while shooting 73.1% from the floor. His impact is dependent on three categories, but there aren’t many players in the league that can provide that level of dominance, especially at 23 years old. Jalen Suggs (Preseason Dynasty Rank: 100) This one may not be universally accepted, but I believe Suggs has taken a step forward this year. I think the next few weeks may be a good indication of how he should be valued. Suggs has shot the ball terribly this year after taking a massive shooting leap last season. That should improve, but with both Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner sidelined, we’ll get to see what he’s all about until Banchero returns. He’s averaging 16.0 points, 3.9 rebounds, 3.9 assists, 1.5 steals, 0.9 blocks and 2.3 threes per game, with everything aside from the assists being career-highs. He has also shot a career-high 92.1% from the free throw line, which should give us confidence that the deep-range shooting will get back to what it was last year. Cam Thomas (Preseason Dynasty Rank: 113) Thomas will absolutely move up my rankings, but I’m not sure how high he climbs. He’s been awesome this year, but I still have so many questions. He’s been a streaky shooter, so can he produce like this for a full season? Is he good enough to do this on a playoff team, or is he just a product of a situation that is begging him to provide offense? Will he always be on a lottery team or will he accept a reduced role in order to be on a winning team? He’s been sidelined for the last couple of weeks, but over the course of the year, he has averaged career-highs of 24.7 points, 3.4 assists and 2.9 threes while shooting 46.1% from the floor. Thomas won’t ever be a reliable contributor of defensive numbers, but a 23-year-old that is scoring almost 25 points per game is difficult to ignore. Dyson Daniels Preseason Dynasty Rank: (133) I wanted to avoid players that I’ve already done a dynasty breakdown for, but Daniels is impossible to leave off this list. That column was written before his streak of games with at least six steals, and he has also had some incredible offensive performances during that time. His value has mostly come from his steals, but he has been one of the most impactful defenders in the league this year. Barring a drop in production, Daniels will make the first All-Defensive Team of his career. His leap this year after being stuck on the Pelicans’ bench for the first two years of his career should be encouraging for how we value players like Eason, who are in a similar situation. Gradey Dick (Preseason Dynasty Rank: 163) Dick has tailed off a bit after a hot start, but he has been impressive in year two. He has averaged 17.9 points, 3.2 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 0.9 steals and 2.5 threes in 32.5 minutes per game. Most of his value will come from points and 3-pointers, but he has solidified his place in the starting unit for this team. There is room for growth in other areas, but at 21 years old, he can also still improve in the areas that he is already strong in. Dick is the type of player that is at his best when he has talent around him, but Toronto has dealt with so many injuries this year. If we get to see this team at full strength, Dick will thrive. Payton Pritchard (Preseason Dynasty Rank: 168) Boston re-signed Pritchard to a team-friendly deal this summer, and it is going to be one of the best bargains in the league for a long time. Pritchard has taken a huge step forward this year without an unsustainable role increase. He has averaged 16.1 points, 3.3 rebounds, 2.9 assists, 1.0 steal and 3.7 threes in 28.2 minutes per game while shooting 48.7% from the floor. Aside from the assists, those are all career-highs. Situations can change quickly in the NBA, and even though it seems like Boston’s team is locked in for the next few years, that may not be the case. However, Pritchard has provided fifth-round value so far, which is way better than every other season of his career. Norman Powell (Preseason Dynasty Rank: 245) He’s on the wrong side of 30, so his dynasty value won’t rise too much, but he has been too good to be ranked this low. Powell has thrived with Kawhi Leonard injured and Paul George now in Philly, which has allowed him to have the best season of his career. He is averaging career-highs of 23.6 points, 2.5 assists and 3.8 threes per game, which have resulted in top-50 production in 9-cat leagues. He is shooting 48.6% from beyond the arc this year, which may regress a bit, but still, I was far too low on Powell heading into this year. Even after this substantial loss, the scammers continued to contact them, claiming their money was waiting and urging further payments. According to a July 2024 warning from the FBI and the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network , these scams are part of the cartel's efforts to diversify their revenue streams and finance other criminal activities, including drug trafficking. Since at least 2012, the cartel and other Mexico-based transnational criminal organizations have increasingly targeted U.S. owners of timeshare properties in Mexico, particularly older adults who are often more vulnerable to such scams. The proceeds from these fraudulent activities not only support the cartel's operations but also contribute to the manufacturing and trafficking of dangerous substances like fentanyl into the United States. 8 PHISHING SCAMS TO WATCH OUT FOR THIS HOLIDAY SEASON How these scams work The Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) has expanded its criminal activities beyond traditional drug trafficking into sophisticated scams, including timeshare fraud targeting unsuspecting individuals, particularly Americans. By understanding these operational tactics, you can better appreciate the complexities and dangers associated with scams perpetrated by organized crime groups like the Jalisco New Generation Cartel. WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) — Attorneys for Meta shareholders asked a Delaware judge Monday to sanction the company's former Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg and fellow Facebook board member and current White House chief of staff Jeff Zients for deleting emails related to the Cambridge Analytica privacy scandal , despite being told to preserve such records. The plaintiff attorneys contend that Sandberg and Zients used personal email accounts to communicate about key issues relating to their 2018 shareholder lawsuit that alleged Facebook officers and directors violated both the law and their fiduciary duties in failing for years to protect the privacy of user data. “Although Sandberg and Zients received a litigation hold requiring them to preserve documents from these accounts, they both knowingly and permanently destroyed electronically stored information from such sources,” attorneys said in a court filing. The plaintiffs say the former board members were either “reckless or intentional” in destroying documents, noting that Sandberg deleted communications to and from her Gmail account after only 30 days, even after being notified of the “litigation hold” to preserve documents. Zients never disabled an auto-delete function on his email account, even though he, too, received a litigation hold and consulted with lawyers, they said. The plaintiffs argue that Sandberg and Zients should be prohibited from testifying about information they sent or received using their personal email accounts. They also say the burden of proof for any affirmative defense they present should be raised to a standard of “clear and convincing evidence,” instead of the lower standard of a “preponderance” of the evidence. Sandberg was deposed last week. Plaintiff attorney Max Huffman said Zients is “busy” and will be deposed in February “after there’s an effective transition in Washington.” Defense attorney Berton Ashman described the email deletions as “unfortunate” but argued that the plaintiffs have not shown that they were prejudiced in any way. “There’s no intent here to destroy relevant or responsive information,” Ashman told Vice Chancellor J. Travis Laster, adding that there no “trove of missing emails.” “There’s no grand scheme or suggestion of bad behavior,” he added. Ashman said the vast majority of emails that Sandberg and Zients sent or received using their personal accounts were also received by other individuals at Facebook. He suggested that any emails that may have been deleted have been made available to the plaintiffs from other sources at Facebook. Huffman, the plaintiffs’ lawyer, said Sandberg does not deserve the benefit of the doubt. “She unilaterally controlled what was kept and what was destroyed,” he told the judge. Laster, who is scheduled to preside over a non-jury trial in April, said he wanted to see a transcript of Sandberg’s deposition before ruling on the motion for sanctions. Last year, the judge rejected a defense motion arguing that the lawsuit should be dismissed because the plaintiffs did not first demand that Facebook’s board take legal action before filing litigation themselves. He agreed with the plaintiffs that such a demand would have been futile because of doubts that a majority of the relevant Facebook board members, many with close personal and business ties to Mark Zuckerberg, would be willing to confront the CEO and founder of the company over its privacy failures. Laster noted that, in deciding on a motion to dismiss, he was required to accept the allegations in the complaint as true. The complaint alleges that Facebook officials repeatedly and continually violated a 2012 consent order with the Federal Trade Commission under which Facebook agreed to stop collecting and sharing personal data on platform users and friends without their consent. Facebook later sold user data to commercial partners in direct violation of the consent order and removed disclosures from privacy settings that were required under consent order, the lawsuit alleges. The company’s conduct resulted in significant fines from regulators in Europe and culminated in the Cambridge Analytica scandal in 2018. That case involved a British political consulting firm hired by Donald Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign that paid a Facebook app developer for the personal information of tens of millions Facebook users. ANGLETON — It was a happy day for fans of classic Texas cafeterias. Anyone cruising down Highway 288-B on Monday might have seen a smiling Luby’s employees waving around a sign or balloons, pointing cars to the restaurant's new full-service Angleton location. Customers new and old were able to park on the right side of the Central Brazoria County Business Park at 4005 Technology Drive, then follow a trail of red and yellow balloons until they reach the doors that lead to Luby’s. After the announcement the beloved Lake Jackson restaurant would close after the sale of its building and owners couldn't reach a satisfactory leasing agreement, loyal customers thought they would adjust to live without Luby’s. If the main restaurant went, the Angleton location inside the business park — which received its food from the Lake Jackson store — would go, too. "What we had before here was a pop-up where we cooked in Lake Jackson and brought the food here to serve," General Manager Terry Mitchell said. "Now, since the closing of Lake Jackson, this will be the cafeteria, so now we can cook on-site." In other words, it was the very pop-up location that would be the business’ salvation. "Everything is much more fresher,” Director of Operations Irene Simotas said. “We're here to serve our customers in Angleton." Lake Jackson customers will notice the Angleton location in smaller but remains true to the same great menu. However, it doesn’t have to stay small forever. Currently, the Angleton location is undergoing a 90-day trial to assess its viability. "If this works out, then we will expand to a 10-year lease or so, and they will build us out a restaurant room over there," Mitchell said. "Right now, we just don't know how busy we're gonna be yet,” Simotas said. “We're hoping to be really, really busy so we can expand and have that dining room as well." If customers keep steadily pouring in, the company will seek expansion and more solid, long-term commitments. But for Central Brazoria County Business Park leasing agent Brady Latimer, the trial period was the last six years, and Luby’s passed with flying colors. "When Intermedics developed the building, they had a kitchen and a restaurant on-site, so a lot of the existing infrastructure was already here," Latimer said. "The Luby’s team has done an incredible job getting everything moved over quickly, timely, efficiently." When first looking for a tenant to the kitchen on the campus, Latimer estimates about two dozen candidates were considered before deciding Luby’s was the best fit for the city. Diners agree. Jack and Ann Henderson frequent the Angleton location regularly with heir daughter and grandson often in tow. Ann Henderson lovingly refers to her husband as Luby’s No. 1 fan, something he has yet to dispute. “Jack likes a chicken fried steak, I love their enchiladas and they have the best key lime pie,” Ann Henderson said. “But the most important thing about this particular Luby’s are the people that work here. Anna, the manager, she's so friendly and just so amazing. Jacob, right there, Coco, they treat you like family and that just fits in with the culture of Angleton and how everybody works together.” Luby’s success in Angleton will largely depend on the support of the community, a sentiment echoed by both management and diners. "This is what we’ll call phase two of the growth," Latimer said. "There’s potential to grow even more in size and offerings, including expanding the kitchen, dining area and even outdoor seating. It’s going to depend on the community’s response." Simotas is optimistic, too. "We're just very excited to be here,” she said. “We're here to serve the people in Angleton. We want this to be very, very popular." Luby’s in Angleton will be open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily. They are taking orders for take-home holiday meals for those who don’t want to cook this holiday season. And for those who have somehow managed to go without trying Luby’s, management recommends you start with the classics. "Fried fish is definitely a staple item for us,” Simotas said. “Also, people love liver and onions. We sell a lot of liver and onions.”
