Ohio State, Michigan players involved in postgame scuffle

A man who had been missing since 1999 will be reunited with his sister as a result of a USA Today article , authorities in California said on Monday. The man, who appeared to be in his mid-60s but could not communicate his name, was booked at a hospital in Lynwood, California, after being found in South Los Angeles in April of this year. The USA Today article, written by Anthony Robledo and published in May, featured an image of the man and asked readers to call the hospital’s social services office if they recognized him. The hospital’s social services department also put out a press release to “connect him to his loved ones soon,” USA Today reported at the time. According to a press release from the Lassen County Sheriff’s Office on Monday, a woman who saw the article reached out to the sheriff’s office on Nov. 22 and claimed that the man was her brother who had been reported missing in 1999. Sheriff’s Deputy Derek Kennemore then “contacted the hospital and was told that the man was transferred to another hospital in the Los Angeles area in July 2024. The man was non verbal and had never been identified. Deputy Kennemore contacted the second hospital who confirmed that they had a non-verbal, unidentified man in their care that matched the description of the missing person,” according to the release. Through fingerprints, authorities were able to confirm the man was the woman’s brother who went missing 25 years ago. “The family will be reunited soon. Names in this case have been withheld for family privacy,” the sheriff’s office said. Related From Our PartnerCALGARY, Alberta – Minnesota Wild goalie Marc-Andre Fleury bounded down the tunnel and onto the ice for his 1,000th NHL start and what was presumably the final start of his career in the home rink of the Edmonton Oilers — a team he’d beaten 16 times previously in his career. ADVERTISEMENT He corralled one of the dozens of pucks strewn around the ice and fired toward the cage he would soon be guarding. But his attempt at an empty-net goal was foiled when the puck he had shot hit another puck at the top of the crease and both slid to the corners of the rink. It was just the first thing that would go wrong for the guy teammates lovingly call “Flower” on this night. Less than 30 seconds into the game, he swung at a puck bouncing in his direction all the way from the red line. He missed, and the Oilers led 1-0 on a fluke that had the Rogers Place crowd roaring and smiling. After the initial shock wore off, Fleury was smiling too. “I haven’t played in so long, I wanted to do well and help the team, and at the beginning to let that one in, I was mad for a little bit and then I just laughed. It was so stupid,” he said following Minnesota’s 5-3 win, which gave him a 4-0-1 record for the season. “The guys came by and they gave me a tap, and they laughed and kind of made it a little lighter. And they battled well, nobody sat back.” ADVERTISEMENT Just under 60 minutes of game time later, Flower was the one grinning in the Wild locker room as Minnesota won its ninth road game in a dozen opportunities. Fleury finished with 28 saves, and the other two Edmonton goals both went off the skates of Wild defenders. In the first period, he made a sprawling poke-check save to thwart Oilers star Connor McDavid’s rush to the net that had the Edmonton crowd primed to explode again. It was the 1,030th appearance in an NHL game for Fleury, moving him past Patrick Roy into third in the NHL record books for most games played by a goalie. He will turn 40 on Thanksgiving Day and has been in the league since 2003, after the Penguins made him the first-overall pick in that summer’s draft. But with Filip Gustavsson off to a fantastic start as the Wild’s mainstay in the crease, and Jesper Wallstedt waiting in the wings (in Iowa) presumably as the franchise’s goalie of the future, Fleury finds himself in a new role: backup goalie. Perhaps the only time his ever-present smile seemed forced following the win in Edmonton was when Fleury pointed out, on two occasions, that it was his first start in three weeks, since a win at San Jose on Nov. 7. ADVERTISEMENT Minnesota coach John Hynes reiterated on Friday afternoon that there was, for a brief moment, a thought that the Wild would carry three goalies — Gustavsson, Fleury and Wallstedt — for a time in October, meaning there would be two backups, or a rotation plus a third stringer. It didn’t work out that way. “Gus and Flower played well. Wally played well. But based on contracts and things like that and where everyone’s at in their career, Wally went down and played (in Iowa) and he’s doing a good job now and has found his game,” Hynes said. “But Flower’s playing really well and Gus is playing really well. So, it hasn’t been that he’s...the understudy. It’s just, here’s what we need to do everyday and then we’ll try to let you know when we’re going to start. Sometimes, it might be in advance. Sometimes, it might be a little closer to the game.” Fleury has made it clear that this will be the final season of his career, so like a rare flower that only blooms once in a while, seeing one of his remaining starts is worth seeking out. Of course, with the Wild defying expectations, the team’s fanbase is clearly hoping this flower keeps blooming well into May or even June. IN the run-up to Christmas, the Delta Marriott hotel on the outskirts of Warwick would usually be bustling with locals enjoying family meals and guests celebrating festive weddings. The four-star hotel advertises itself as the perfect location for tourists visiting Shakespeare’s birthplace in Stratford-upon-Avon and boasts a restaurant with a menu drawn up by a Michelin-starred chef. 5 Warwick's Delta Marriott hotel has an 'exclusive-use booking' until mid-February, says its apologetic manager Credit: Paul Marriott 5 Altrincham’s Cresta Court Hotel is now booked for asylum seekers Credit: Zenpix 5 Komal Pahl says she only found out about the Delta Marriott’s booking on Facebook Credit: Paul Marriott But that all changed in the middle of November when security fences were put up and a plastic sheet was placed over the sign at its front entrance. The takeover of the hotel by the Home Office to house asylum seekers while their claims are processed came as a shock to paying guests and those living nearby, with bookings cancelled at less than 24 hours’ notice. The site is one of the seven new asylum hotels opened since the election, despite Labour’s manifesto pledge to end their use. With 133,409 asylum seekers waiting at the end of September for an initial decision on their claims, hotels are used as a quick fix for an overwhelmed system. When Labour won the July election they restarted the system, but a huge backlog remains on top of the nearly 100,000 people who applied for asylum in the year to September. Since the election, the number housed in hotels like the Delta Marriott has jumped by 21 per cent to 35,361. There are currently 220 such hotels in operation across the country. Previously a night’s stay at the hotel cost £104 on average, according to Tripadvisor, where guests praised it for the friendly staff and “super-comfy” beds. Moment chaos erupts as residents are told hotel migrants 'will get access to private healthcare' Komal Pahl, who lives with three generations of her family a stone’s throw from the hotel, told The Sun on Sunday that they were given no notice of what would be happening. She said: “My sister used to go to the gym there, as did several of our neighbours, but obviously that has all changed now. “We had no knowledge of what was about to happen. We saw they covered up their hotel signs, which was odd, and the next day metal fences arrived, along with security guards. I found out from Facebook.” Komal, 25, who works for an anti-racism charity in Coventry, added: “It was a shock. He said: “My son used to be the duty manager there, the staff know us and we use it for drinks if we have guests staying. "The hotel was our neighbour. We’re not happy. We were told nothing about this, and as we’re in the middle of selling our house it’s very stressful.” Andrew Day, a Tory councillor on Warwick District Council, said: “You can’t blame the hotel for taking guaranteed revenue in the quiet months but it does represent a loss to the community.” ‘Kept in the dark’ He added: “This is just another example of Labour saying one thing to get elected, then doing another when in power. “It just shows that this is an intractable problem, no matter who is in power.” In Altrincham, Gtr Manchester, residents held a meeting to voice concerns that they have been left in an “information vacuum” after the nearby Cresta Court Hotel was turned into an asylum hotel without their knowledge. Gwyneth and Roger Roper, who have previously housed Ukrainian refugees, said they were concerned about the lack of information. Gwyneth said: “I can’t say I agree or disagree with what’s going on because we’ve just been kept in the dark and treated like mushrooms. “It’s wrong of local and central government not to consult us on something that could impact the local community.” Annually £5.38billion is spent on the UK’s asylum system, or nearly £15million a day. It is the highest total spending since comparable records began in 2010 and is up by nearly 12 times in ten years. The hotel bill was previously £8.3million a day, when the number of people housed in hotels peaked at 56,042 in September 2023. Labour’s pledge to cut that bill was laid out clearly in their manifesto, which stated: “Labour will turn the page and restore order to the asylum system so that it operates swiftly, firmly and fairly, and the rules are properly enforced. Among the reasons why so many people are in hotels is that for a long time the claims weren’t being processed Sir Keir Starmer “We will hire additional caseworkers to clear the Conservatives’ backlog and end asylum hotels, saving the taxpayer billions.” With more asylum seekers arriving, more accommodation is needed. But after nearly seven months, work to convert a student accommodation block in Huddersfield, West Yorks is incomplete. In the year to September, 99,790 people applied for asylum, up slightly from the 98,926 total in the previous 12 months. Of the latest arrivals, those who had crossed the Channel in small boats made up 28 per cent of the total. At a press conference this week Sir Keir Starmer said: “We must bring the cost of asylum down and we have a manifesto pledge to bring the number of hotels down, to end the use of hotels, which we are driving hard at. “The way to do that is to increase the processing of claims. Among the reasons why so many people are in hotels is that for a long time the claims weren’t being processed.” He added: “We’ve returned 9,600 since the election and we have got more flights off than has ever been done before.” This week Kemi Badenoch used her first major policy speech as Tory leader to say “immigration, both legal and illegal, is too high”. She said: “We can argue about the effects of migration on the economy, we can discuss the impact on public services and housing, and we haven’t done that enough. 'Clearing the backlog' “But fundamentally, this country is not a dormitory or a hotel, it is our home. We need to look after it.” A Labour source said: “When the Tories were kicked out of power on July 4, the immigration system was on its knees. “Between the start of the year and the General Election, asylum decisions dropped by 75 per cent and asylum interviews fell by more than 80 per cent. “We’re now making over 10,000 asylum decisions per month, clearing the backlog. On a visit to Calais on Friday he said he wants a “comprehensive” deal with Britain and the wider European community rather than more UK funding to police French beaches. Home Secretary Yvette Cooper is to meet him on December 9 as figures show more than 50 people have died trying to cross the Channel this year – the highest total ever. Mr Retailleau called for a deal in which the UK would accept asylum applicants, with the EU taking back those it rejects, and said he would “arm-wrestle” with the EU over the issue, adding: “Only a comprehensive deal between the UK and the EU can really turn things around.”

Strong's late 3 lifts Boston College past Missouri State, 76-74 in Cayman Islands semifinalAUSTIN, Texas — The Austin City Council on Thursday approved an amendment to the city's agreement with the Sunrise Homeless Navigation Center on Menchaca Road. The city will give the facility around $250,000 more through next September to provide permanent supportive housing services to people experiencing homelessness . The funding approval comes as Sunrise faces a lawsuit from Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton , who says the facility has turned a South Austin neighborhood into a "hub of drugs and crime" and is a public nuisance. Sunrise is located next to Joslin Elementary School, and Paxton says it is harming the quality of life in the area and endangering students. Last week , KVUE spoke with the parent of a student who previously attended that school, who agreed that the facility made her worry about her son's safety. "I did witness people looking through the fence, scary people acting erratically, people who had appeared to be dressed inappropriately for the weather, who appeared to be using drugs, who appeared to not be behaving normally," Amanda Mansouri said. "He would be scared when he would see people outside behaving strangely." Ultimately, Mansouri said she decided to take her child out of Joslin and enroll him in another school. On the other side of the issue, some say the attorney general's lawsuit is unnecessary and even "over dramatic." Stacy Suits, one of the constables for Travis County Precinct 3, said when he saw the lawsuit against Sunrise, he started a fundraiser to help the center fight back. "This is a ministry doing what the Bible and Jesus says: 'To take care of the least among us.' And that's what we're trying to do," Suits said. "It's a humane thing." The attorney general is asking a judge for a temporary injunction against Sunrise, to prevent it from continuing to operate.

Daily Post Nigeria LaLiga: Ancelotti hints at new positions for Vinicius Jr, Mbappe Home News Politics Metro Entertainment Sport Sport LaLiga: Ancelotti hints at new positions for Vinicius Jr, Mbappe Published on November 30, 2024 By Ifreke Inyang Real Madrid manager, Carlo Ancelotti, has hinted at new roles for Vinicius Junior and Kylian Mbappe. Mbappe joined Los Blancos last summer as a free agent after leaving Paris Saint-Germain. Since his arrival in Madrid, the France captain has mostly played through the middle. Vinicius has been deployed through his preferred left wing. Mbappe has struggled to shine with the LaLiga champions and Ancelotti might be considering swapping roles between the two forwards. Speaking ahead of their game against Getafe, Ancelotti said: “Vinicius Jr is realizing through the middle he’s very dangerous. “Also, I think Kylian Mbappé is comfortable on the left.” Related Topics: Ancelotti LaLiga Mbappe Vinicius Jr. Don't Miss NNL: Sokoto United sign three players for new season You may like LaLiga: Real Madrid president, Perez in showdown talks with Ancelotti over poor form Ballon d’Or: Gareth Bale snubs Vinicius Jr, names player to win award after Rodri Champions League: Ancelotti names one team that will play in final this season UCL: Ancelotti names Real Madrid’s most difficult opponent in Champions League UCL: Ancelotti reacts as Mbappe misses penalty in 2-0 defeat to Liverpool UCL: You had a stinker – Sutton blasts Mbappe as Real Madrid lose to Liverpool Advertise About Us Contact Us Privacy-Policy Terms Copyright © Daily Post Media LtdLabour has accused Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael of using the topic of potential coalition partners as a bid to distract the public from their shortcomings. Although polls place the Labour Party as the favourite — among party leaders and the public — to join a coalition with one or more of the major parties, TD Duncan Smith said Labour was not in favour of propping up "the old ways". "I know that Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael, in the absence of having anything tangible to say, and to distract from their failures in housing, health and indeed, public transport, that is all they seem to be talking about," Mr Smith said. I am a bit fed up. Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael have nothing new to offer the people in this election so what they are doing is they are spinning about coalition partners. He said his party would not be distracted from its goal to come back with more seats and to talk with other parties on the left and environmental parties in an attempt to create a bloc. Mr Smith said he felt it was unfair Labour leader Ivana Bacik was not included in the leaders' debate on RTÉ on Tuesday night but said the sense on the doors was that people were looking beyond debates and beyond the three parties. "For me, this election is about all the issues because people are so clued in, be it about transport, health, housing, disability services, special education," he said. There have been "hard conversations" at the doors, Mr Smith admitted, as people are feeling the struggle. Days out from going to the polls, he said there were still many undecided votes out there and Labour would continue to have those tough conversations between now and then. Mr Smith was speaking as Labour launched its plan to decarbonise the transport system by investing in public transport, cycling, and road safety. The party would invest at least €10bn extra of capital investment over the next five years, with the long-promised MetroLink as the flagship project. Mr Smith, the party's transport spokesperson, said the MetroLink would be a red line issue for Labour in any government coalition talks and the aim was to have work on the project "well progressed" in the course of the next government. He hit out at Fianna Fáil and the Green Party, saying they were responsible for the shelving of the project in 2011 due to the fact "they drove the economy off a cliff edge". The manifesto also includes plans to advance Luas designs for all five Irish cities, with an aim to complete at least 15 new lines by 2024. Labour would deliver a cycling package, including a bike grant scheme, for those without employment income and expand the city bike schemes to develop a unified national network. It would see construction starting on the Cork light rail system before 2030. In an attempt to reduce the number of lives lost on Irish roads, the Labour Party would replace the RSA with a new body and move the oversight of testing and licensing to a separate agency.NEW YORK (AP) — Shohei Ohtani wins his third MVP and first in the NL following a historic offensive season with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
