Hezbollah leaders also signaled tentative backing for the U.S.-brokered deal, which offers both sides an off-ramp from hostilities that have driven more than 1.2 million Lebanese and 50,000 Israelis from their homes. An intense bombing campaign by Israel has killed more than 3,700 people, many of them civilians, Lebanese officials say. But while the deal, set to take effect early Wednesday, could significantly calm the tensions that have inflamed the region, it does little directly to resolve the much deadlier war that has raged in Gaza since the Hamas attack on southern Israel in October 2023 that killed 1,200 people. Hezbollah, which began firing scores of rockets into Israel the following day in support of Hamas, has previously said it would keep fighting until there was a stop to the fighting in Gaza. Here’s what to know about the tentative ceasefire agreement and its potential implications: The agreement reportedly calls for a 60-day halt in fighting that would see Israeli troops retreat to their side of the border while requiring Hezbollah to end its armed presence in a broad swath of southern Lebanon. A Hezbollah leader said the group's support for the deal hinged on clarity that Israel would not renew its attacks. “After reviewing the agreement signed by the enemy government, we will see if there is a match between what we stated and what was agreed upon by the Lebanese officials,” Mahmoud Qamati, deputy chair of Hezbollah’s political council, told the Qatari satellite news network Al Jazeera. “We want an end to the aggression, of course, but not at the expense of the sovereignty of the state” of Lebanon, he said. While the auto racing competition always had fans in the US, especially after the first Grand Prix came to the US in 2012, the release of the Netflix docuseries " Formula 1: Drive to Survive " in 2019 kicked off a steep rise in popularity domestically. And according to an F1 Global Survey, women and younger viewers account for much of the sport's growth. Stefano Domenicali, the CEO of Formula One Group, says that around 40 percent of fans are now women, per Reuters . And insights firm Interpret found that Gen Z and millennials account for 60 percent of F1's US fanbase. This influx of younger, women F1 fans is bringing a fresh perspective to a traditionally male-dominated sport — and helping to usher in and elevate the voices of a new era of women leaders within F1. Last month I attended the United States Grand Prix in Austin, TX where I could take in the weekend's excitement and connect with old and new women F1 fans. Here's what they had to say about what's drawn them to the sport — and what industry experts think is on the horizon for F1. These Black F1 Fans Are Changing the Narrative Around the Sport Why Women Are Becoming F1 Fans Being at the United States Grand Prix in Austin was electrifying. There was excitement at every turn, extending far beyond the race itself. At the American Express Fan Experience, fans could take in scenic views of the entire track at the iconic COTA Tower, create personalized " driver intro videos " to post on social media, and also discover their unique "driver personality " through a fun and interactive driver evaluation. Eminem headlined the concert stage, and the local food scene turned up the heat as well with plenty of Texas BBQ to be had. Those unfamiliar with F1 may be surprised by just how popular F1 Grand Prix races are and the distance fans are willing to travel. In an American Express Global Trends Report , 67 percent of millennial and Gen-Z respondents said they plan to travel for sports, and of those traveling for sports this year, nearly 58 percent overall, cited an F1 race, soccer match, or basketball game that's encouraging them to hit the road. Specifically, for F1 fans, their reasons for wanting to be on the ground are because of the ultimate fan experience and connection the sport provides. F1 races take place worldwide, in destinations including Montreal, Mexico City, Australia, Japan, Italy, Brazil, England, Miami, and this upcoming weekend's Grand Prix in Las Vegas . This may be part of what's drawing younger and women fans to the sport — the global appeal and the opportunity to travel. "Every track is different, which adds to the excitement that other sports don't have," says Anisa El-Khouri, an F1 fan and a millennial business executive who lives in Portland, OR. "Drive to Survive" is often credited for highlighting that F1 is about more than just the race–it's an aesthetic, a culture, and a community–which has sparked greater interest among female fans. The races are thrilling to watch, and many new fans love familiarizing themselves with the technological side of F1, from the design of the cars to the various racing strategies that teams utilize. "As a fan, I enjoy the science and strategy that goes along with each race," says Abbey Cullen, an educator from Chicago, IL, and a self-described "dedicated" F1 fan, who recently traveled as far as the Austrian Grand Prix to see the action live and up close. On the ground, I observed Gen-Z and millennial fans enjoying getting to know the personalities of the drivers ; being able to follow them on social media further connects fans to their lives. They also follow the strategic maneuvering and tactics executed by each team, adding another layer of excitement to the sport. In my conversations with women fans in Austin, it was clear that women fans particularly enjoy seeing and following women leaders in F1 . Such is the case for Cullen, who first became interested in F1 after learning about Claire Williams, who'd been the deputy team principal and the public face of the Williams Formula One racing team from 2013 to 2020. As one of only two women to lead an F1 team, Williams's presence provided representation and connection for women to the sport. "The inclusion of more women behind the teams and the wheel is exciting to witness," Cullen says. How Women Fans and Leaders Are Fueling F1's Future The growing number of women F1 fans has led to an increased demand for representation of women, which is good news for the sport. The creation of F1 Academy — an all-female, racing series launched by F1 in 2023 — was partially a reaction to the rise in women fandom, and has also grown the women's fan base further as it's ushered in a new generation of female talent. In 2024, American Express became an official partner of F1 Academy and has pledged to elevate women in the sport and support the future of women in the sport. As part of this partnership, the company sponsors driver Jessica Edgar , who races with Rodin Motorsport and will be supporting small women-owned businesses in cities hosting F1 Academy races — all efforts to fuel the growth of women in the sport beyond the race itself. This commitment is championed by the leadership of Shiz Suzuki, the vice president of Global Experiential Marketing & Partnerships at American Express, who believes that investment in women will be essential to the future growth of the sport. "For Amex, supporting F1 Academy is about supporting women both on and off the track," Suzuki says. The backing of small, women-owned businesses — from merchandisers to food vendors — reflects the broader impact of women's presence in F1. "Pushing for this was very important to me. We'll similarly feature a different female-owned small business that will be local to race locations during the upcoming season," Suzuki says. "The F1 fanbase is evolving with a growing audience of young women fans, so let's amplify their presence and have their stories told." Women can provide design and manufacturing inputs on the cars as well as marketing and merchandising improvements that can help improve team performance on and off the track," she says, adding that increased women leadership in STEM fields may also lead to more women F1 careers. "The ways in which women can impact F1 are endless," Pinto says. "Sometimes in life, you just need to see it to believe it," Susie Wolff, the managing director of F1 Academy, shared at American Express's " A Celebration of Women with Drive" panel discussion earlier this year, referring to how vital women are to the future of the sport: from representation to purchasing power to leadership, women are changing the landscape of F1. "We're not here just to find the next female Formula 1 driver," Wolff added. "We want to open up the whole sport, we want to break down the barriers that stop the sport's progression, and we want to make sure that we're inspiring the next generation." With interest and investment in F1 only gaining steam, there's every reason to believe that the future will bring even more women to F1, as drivers, leaders, supporters, and fans. The Liberals announced a plan last week to cut the federal sales tax on a raft of items like toys and restaurant meals for two months, and to give $250 to more than 18.7 million Canadians in the spring. Speaking after a Canadian Labour Congress event in Ottawa, Singh says he's open to passing the GST legislation, but the rebate needs to include seniors, students, people who are on disability benefits and those who were not able to work last year. Singh says he initially supported the idea because he thought the rebate cheques would go to anyone who earned under $150,000 last year. But the so-called working Canadians rebate will be sent to those who had an income, leaving out people Singh says need the help. The government intends to include the measures in the fall economic statement, which has not yet been introduced in the House of Commons. The proposed GST holiday would begin in mid-December, lasting for two months. It would remove the GST on prepared foods at grocery stores, some alcoholic drinks, children's clothes and toys, Christmas trees, restaurant meals, books, video games and physical newspapers. A privilege debate has held up all government business in the House since late September, with the Conservatives pledging to continue a filibuster until the government hands over unredacted documents related to misspending at a green technology fund. The NDP said last week they had agreed to pause the privilege debate in order to pass the legislation to usher in the GST holiday. Singh said Tuesday that unless there are changes to the proposed legislation, he will not support pausing the debate. The University of Manitoba has announced a new program for health-care workers to make sure Indigenous patients receive culturally safe care as part of ongoing efforts to build a better and more equal health-care system. “The purpose of the training is to address racism, foster culturally safe environments for Indigenous patients, and improve Indigenous health,” Dr. Marcia Anderson, the Cree-Anishinaabe physician who is vice-dean of Indigenous health, social justice and anti-racism of the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences, said in a news release. The new training program, called “We Will Take Good Care of the People,” or “Giga Mino Ganawenimaag Anishinaabeg” in Anishinaabemowin, will focus on equipping health-care providers with training drawing upon the expertise and wisdom of local Indigenous Knowledge Keepers, engaging front-line workers in a range of activities and reflections. “Indigenous people make up 18 per cent of the Manitoba population,” Anderson said. “They have the poorest health status and the lowest life expectancy of any group. As an important step toward closing the health gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people, we’re providing staff at every level with the foundational knowledge to provide more racially just and culturally safe care.” Anderson said it’s essential anyone within Manitoba’s health-care system acknowledges the multi-generational harms caused to Indigenous people by the health and residential school system. The new program has the capacity to support training for up to 3,000 people annually and will be offered to health-care workers across the province and to faculty members in the Rady Faculty. The effort is a critical one, noted Manitoba health-care officials. “Providing improved training across health organizations, including among decision makers and in the locations where care is provided, is one strategy we are implementing to address inequities and create a health system that is better equipped to deliver culturally safe, anti-racist health care,” Charlene Lafreniere, Shared Health’s provincial lead of Indigenous Health, said in the same release. “All health-care workers have a responsibility to understand First Nation, Métis and Inuit peoples’ rights to culturally safe, equitable, dignified health care.” A partnership between the University of Manitoba and SharedHealth regions, the training is being funded by a grant of roughly $1 million awarded to the school’s Ongomiizwin Indigenous Institute of Health and Healing through Health Canada’s Addressing Racism and Discrimination in Canada’s Health Systems program.

Authorities in Pakistan launch operation to clear Khan supporters from capitalOTTAWA - NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh says while he supports the Liberal plan to give Canadians a GST break during the holidays, he won’t back the $250 rebate proposal unless the government expands eligibility to the most vulnerable. The Liberals announced a plan last week to cut the federal sales tax on a raft of items such as toys and restaurant meals for two months, and to give $250 to more than 18.7 million Canadians in the spring. Speaking after a Canadian Labour Congress event in Ottawa, Singh said he’s open to passing the GST legislation, but the rebate needs to include seniors, students, people who are on disability benefits and those who were not able to work last year. Singh said he initially supported the idea because he thought the rebate cheques would go to anyone who earned under $150,000 last year. But the so-called working Canadians rebate will be sent to those who had an income, leaving out people Singh said need the help. A spokeswoman for Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland said it would be “categorically false” to say seniors and people with disabilities are excluded from the rebate. “In order to qualify, you just need to have made less than $150,000 in net income in 2023 and meet one of the three following criteria: received EI benefits, paid EI premiums or made CPP contributions,” press secretary Katherine Cuplinskas said in a statement. “Many, many seniors and Canadians with disabilities work.” The government intends to include the measures in the fall economic statement, which has not yet been introduced in the House of Commons. The proposed GST holiday would begin in mid-December, lasting for two months. It would remove the GST on prepared foods at grocery stores, some alcoholic drinks, children’s clothes and toys, Christmas trees, restaurant meals, books, video games and physical newspapers. A privilege debate has held up all government business in the House since late September, with the Conservatives pledging to continue a filibuster until the government hands over unredacted documents related to misspending at a green technology fund. The NDP said last week they had agreed to pause the privilege debate to pass the legislation to usher in the GST holiday. Singh said Tuesday that unless there are changes to the proposed legislation, he will not support pausing the debate. The CFL club’s general manager told reporters at his year-end availability Tuesday that reaching a fifth straight championship game by overcoming lots of injuries was a big accomplishment. Even before Winnipeg’s recent 41-24 Grey Cup loss to the Toronto Argonauts, Walters said he was looking forward to next season. “I was excited for next year based on what I’m looking at, compared to years past, where we’ve got more young guys that have contributed that are under contract,” he said. “We’ve got more young players in the building. So, the idea of, ‘This is the end of the road. The team is in a free-for-all downward,’ I don’t think is accurate. “We have a good group of guys and we were in a one-point (Grey Cup) game with 10 minutes left ... before things went downhill.” The Blue Bombers started the season 0-4, moved to 2-6 and finished 11-7 to claim the West Division title. Star receiver Dalton Schoen, veteran linebacker Adam Bighill and backup quarterback Chris Streveler all suffered season-ending injuries and are pending free agents. Negotiating with the team’s 27 unsigned players could be impacted by moves across the league among coaches, personnel staff and players such as quarterbacks, Walters said. The Bombers have given permission for offensive coordinator Buck Pierce to speak to the B.C. Lions and Edmonton Elks about those teams’ vacant head-coaching jobs, he said. Walters also revealed the Ottawa Redblacks were given the go-ahead to talk to Richie Hall about their defensive coordinator vacancy. He said an NFL team had asked Tuesday morning to work out one Blue Bomber, but he didn’t reveal the player’s name in case he wasn’t aware of the request yet. The Blue Bombers won the Grey Cup in 2019 and ’21, but lost 28-24 to the Montreal Alouettes last year and 24-23 to Toronto in 2022. Winnipeg re-signed placekicker Sergio Castillo last week. Walters said he’d like to have deals done with three or four main players before the end of the year. The team has some up-and-coming young players inked for next year, and injuries gave others valuable experience on both sides of the ball, Walters said. Receivers such as rookie Ontaria Wilson (1,026 yards receiving in 18 games) and Keric Wheatfall (273 yards in seven games) are signed through next season. “The experience that they got was invaluable,” Walters said. Re-signing players who missed time because of injuries can get tricky. “Organizationally, can we approach (their agents) and say, ‘Well, your guy was hurt, he should come back for less money?’” Walters said. “Generally, they don’t view it like that. They view that they’ll be back 100 per cent.” One question mark is the backup to starting quarterback Zach Collaros, who suffered a deep cut to the index finger of his throwing hand late in the third quarter of the Grey Cup. Collaros got five stitches and numbing agent applied to his finger. He returned with a bandage on it, but admitted he had a hard time gripping the ball. “We’ll have to find out who our offensive coordinator is first,” Walters said when asked who might be Collaros’s backup. Terry Wilson, who briefly replaced Collaros in the Grey Cup, and Jake Dolegala are signed for next year.
