(WV News) — During the special session held in August, 2023, the West Virginia Legislature passed a bill allocating $25 million that was said to be to construct a new facility to house Pierpont Community & Technical College's Aviation Maintenance Technology program. More than a year later, progress on the facility has yet to begin. But local lawmakers have said the project is still viable and in the works. Gov. Jim Justice signed Senate Bill 1029 into law during a ceremony in Bridgeport on Aug. 17, 2023. West Virginia Senate President Craig Blair, left, and Gov. Jim Justice hold up a signed copy of Senate Bill 1029 during a ceremony in Bridgeport in Aug. 2023. “More employment, more goodness, more opportunity — that’s exactly what is happening right in front of us,” he said. SB 1029 was a $52.7 million appropriations bill containing funding for 14 items. Some of the items are specifically spelled out in the text of the bill, such as $241,570 for the National Youth Science Camp and $500,000 for the Marshall University Research Corporation. The $25 million intended for Pierpont's facility is listed as "Directed Transfer - surplus" that "shall be transferred to the Economic Development Fund." The word "Pierpont" does not appear in the text of SB 1029. However, local lawmakers say that the bill's intent was clear and was Gov. Justice's intentions. Pierpont’s aviation program has long been an important source of workforce development for the aerospace businesses on the campus of North Central West Virginia Airport like Boeing subsidiary Auroa Flight Sciences, Lockheed Martin and MHIRJ. Students can earn a a degree in Aviation Maintenance Technology, allowing them to pursue well-paid aerospace industry careers such as airframe maintenance mechanic, avionics technician and aviation maintenance director. The program is currently operating at capacity and has outgrown its current location. The new facility would allow the program to expand from 130 to 200 students per class, according to officials. State lawmakers are "working diligently to make sure this happens," said Sen. Ben Queen, R-Harrsion. "Obviously, we want this to happen under the Justice administration, but the legislature appropriated the money, so I don't have a real big worry that if the administrations changes, that the Morrisey administration won't follow through with this bill," he said. Queen This project would be one of the first where the state EDA constructs and owns a new building, as opposed to taking over an existing facility, Queen said. Progress toward getting the project started is ongoing, Queen said. "We have been in discussions just the last two weeks and are doing everything we can to make this happen and to have an announcement by the end of the year," he said. Del. Clay Riley, R-Harrison, advocates for passage of Senate Bill 1029, which included funds for Pierpont Community & Technical College, during the Aug. 2023 special session of the West Virginia Legislature. Del. Clay Riley, R-Harrsion, who advocated for the funding on the floor of the State House of Delegates, said the project is in the "design phase." "I hope it will going to bid soon. I don't have an update that it will, but it would be my anticipation that it would," he said. "Obviously, that's a very critical component to North Central West Virginia (Airport) and the employment there. I would hope that whatever the stumbling blocks may be, that they get worked out pretty quickly." C.J. Harvey, director of communications for Justice's office, said he didn't have information to provide about the project's current status, but said the governor "remains very enthusiastic for the aerospace industry's future, particularly in North Central West Virginia, where recent investments are positioning the region as a leader." "Under Gov. Justice's leadership, West Virginia continues to diversify its economy and show the world the monumental changes happening in the Mountain State," Harvey said in an email to WV News. As originally described, the new 70,000-square-foot Pierpont facility will occupy around 6 acres in the new West Virginia AeroTech Park, where the airport's recently-completed terminal building is located. The new Pierpoint facility will occupy around 6 acres in the new West Virginia AeroTech Park, which is adjacent to W.Va. 279. The proposed design features two high bay hangars, aviation-related specialty labs, including shops for turbine and reciprocating engine overhauls, flight controls and hydraulics, lecture classrooms and a learning resource and testing center.Police say suspect in UnitedHealthcare CEO killing wasn't a client of the insurer

VANCOUVER — Vancouver Canucks defenceman Filip Hronek is expected to be out until the end of January as he recovers from a lower-body injury. General manager Patrik Allvin issued a statement Tuesday saying Hronek underwent a successful procedure for the undisclosed ailment and is expected to miss about eight weeks. He says the 27-year-old Czech blueliner will not require surgery for an upper-body injury. Hronek hasn't played since going into the endboards hard late in Vancouver's 5-4 loss to the Penguins in Pittsburgh last Wednesday. He's been paired with captain Quinn Hughes for much of the season and registered eight points (one goal, eight assists) in 21 games. The Canucks (13-7-3) have dealt with a litany of notable absences this season, including all-star goalie Thatcher Demko, who remains sidelined with a knee injury, and star centre J.T. Miller, who's on an indefinite leave for personal reasons. This report by The Canadian Press was first published Dec. 3, 2024. The Canadian PressCoca-Cola (NYSE:KO) Trading Up 0.1% – Time to Buy?

A plurality of Americans believe President Joe Biden’s presidential pardons are “inappropriate,” according to the latest weekly survey from the Economist /YouGov. The survey asked , “Do you think the way President Biden has used the power to pardon or commute the sentences of people convicted of federal crimes has been appropriate or inappropriate?” A plurality, 46 percent, described it as “inappropriate,” while 28 percent said it is “appropriate.” Just over a quarter, 26 percent, remain unsure. There is major partisan divide on this matter, as a majority of Democrats, 55 percent, believe Biden’s actions on these pardons has been “appropriate.” Only 17 percent said it is not. However, most Republicans, 71 percent, deem Biden’s actions on this matter “inappropriate,” and a plurality of independents, 48 percent, agree. Only 12 percent of Republicans and 19 percent of independents believe Biden’s actions regarding pardons has been “appropriate” in nature. The survey was taken December 15 – 17, 2024, among 1,553 U.S. adult citizens. It has a +/- 3.4 percent margin of error. It follows Biden issuing presidential pardons to 39 Americans convicted of nonviolent crimes and commuting the sentences of close to 1,500 individuals. As Breitbart News reported , this makes it the “largest single-day act of clemency in modern history.” Notably, the survey came ahead of Biden doubling down and commenting the sentences of 37 of 40 individuals on federal death row. “Make no mistake: I condemn these murderers, grieve for the victims of their despicable acts, and ache for all the families who have suffered unimaginable and irreparable loss,” Biden claimed in a December 23 statement, asserting that he was “guided by [his] conscience and [his] experience as a public defender, chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, Vice President, and now President” to make that decision. “I am more convinced than ever that we must stop the use of the death penalty at the federal level. In good conscience, I cannot stand back and let a new administration resume executions that I halted,” he added. A presidential pardon that received the most pushback was that of his own son, Hunter Biden. The 82-year-old pardoned his criminal son in his final weeks in office after years of denying he would do so. “No reasonable person who looks at the facts of Hunter’s cases can reach any other conclusion than Hunter was singled out only because he is my son – and that is wrong,” Biden concluded in a December 1 statement. “There has been an effort to break Hunter – who has been five and a half years sober, even in the face of unrelenting attacks and selective prosecution,” he said, adding, “In trying to break Hunter, they’ve tried to break me – and there’s no reason to believe it will stop here. Enough is enough.” Notably, Biden’s pardon extends all the way back to 2014, which includes Hunter’s role in Ukraine, serving on the board of corrupt Ukrainian gas company Burisma. RELATED — Jill Biden: “Of Course” I Support Pardon for Hunter Biden That pardon came despite Biden and his administration lying to the American people repeatedly throughout the years, as both denied his intentions to pardon Hunter. White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre lied about it as recently as November 7, 2024, flatly telling a reporter, “No,” when asked if Biden had any intention of pardoning his son. “We’ve been asked that question multiple times. Our answer stands, which is no,” she claimed. RELATED — Karine Jean-Pierre: “No” Possibility Joe Biden Pardons His Son Hunter

Donald Bitzer, Collinsville native who brought plasma screens to the world, has diedNEW YORK (AP) — The New York Mets wanted Juan Soto to know his future with them could be set in stone. When the free agent outfielder traveled to owner Steve Cohen's house in Beverly Hills, California, for a presentation last month, the team showed a video that included an image of a future Soto statue outside Citi Field, next to the one erected of franchise great Tom Seaver . “Everything that they showed me, what they have, what they want to do, it was incredible,” Soto said. “But my favorite part was the video.” Soto was introduced at Citi Field on Thursday, a day after his record $765 million, 15-year contract was finalized. Speaking in the Piazza 31 Club, he was flanked by Mets owner Steve Cohen, president of baseball operations David Stearns and agent Scott Boras. Security men in gray suits wearing earpieces were off to the side. The slugger walked in led by Boras, wearing a dark suit, black turtle neck shirt and gold chain with his No. 22. Soto picked the Mets over the New York Yankees, Los Angeles Dodgers, Boston Red Sox and Toronto Blue Jays. His deal includes a luxury suite and four premium tickets for home games , all for free, and personal team security for the four-time All-Star and his family at the team’s expense for all spring training and regular-season home and road games. “My family is really important for me. Without them, I probably wouldn't have been here,” Soto said. “It's one of the biggest things.” Boras had asked for those sweeteners. “We included it at the beginning," Cohen said. “He made a request and we were happy to provide.” The crosstown Yankees, who reached the World Series for the first time since 2009 in part because of Soto, refused to consider the concept. “Some high-end players that make a lot of money for us, if they want suites, they buy them,” general manager Brian Cashman said. Cohen purchased the Mets ahead of the 2021 season and has boosted them to baseball's highest payroll in search of the team's first title since 1986 — when the World Series MVP, like Soto, wore No. 22 — Ray Knight. The owner thanked his son, Josh, for helping create the video and commended his 93-year-old father-in-law Ralph for attending the first get-together with Soto. While other teams met Soto at the Pendry Newport Beach, a hotel just a five-minute drive from Boras Corp.'s office, Cohen asked to host the session at one of his homes. “If we’re going to some restaurant, I didn’t know what the atmosphere would be,” Cohen said. “Food's better at my house.” Cohen and Soto met again Friday at another of the owner's homes in Boca Raton, Florida. Soto wanted to know how many championships Cohen expects over the next decade? “I said I’d like to win two to four,” the owner recalled. The value of Soto's contract eclipsed Shohei Ohtani’s $700 million, 10-year deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers last December. Its length topped Fernando Tatis Jr.’s $340 million, 14-year agreement with San Diego that runs through 2034. The 26-year-old Soto batted .288 with 41 homers, 109 RBIs and 129 walks this year and has a .285 career average with 201 homers, 592 RBIs and 769 walks over seven seasons with Washington, San Diego and the Yankees. Boras wouldn't discuss who finished second in the bidding in Soto's mind. “When you’re at a wedding, you don’t talk about the bridesmaids," he said. Soto made the decision Sunday while at home with his family. Boras referred to the group as the “Soto Supreme Court" defined as “mother, sister, father — he’s got a wide group. I think he may have eight or nine uncles.” “My information requests and such were rather unique,” Boras said, detailing that his team asked for OPS by ballpark. Soto's 1.175 at Citi Field is his highest at any stadium where he's played 15 or more games. Soto cited Cohen's relationship with Mets stars Francisco Lindor and Edwin Díaz as a factor in his mind. “They are kind of like (a tight) family, a family that wants to win but they definitely want to take care of their players and their families,” Soto said. Cohen had his wife Alex and father-in-law attend the initial meeting to emphasize kinship. “My father-in-law is at every game, every home game,” Cohen said. “I wanted him to see how important baseball is to this family. And Alex grew up with one TV in an apartment and that Met game was on every night.” Cohen relishes owning the Mets. He spoke earlier in the day to a town hall at his hedge fund. “Whenever you meet somebody, they want to talk about the Mets before they talk about financial markets,” he said. Soto's success will be determined by World Series titles. The Yankees have 27, the Mets two. “It's such a big city, right? There's plenty of room for both of us,” Cohen said. Soto had a more direct definition. "Championships is going to tell you if it's a Yankees or Mets town at the end of the day," he said. AP MLB: https://apnews.com/mlb
