Dirk Meissner, The Canadian Press Dec 5, 2024 2:41 PM Share by Email Share on Facebook Share on X Share on LinkedIn Print Share via Text Message B.C. Premier David Eby holds a press conference at the legislature in Victoria, Nov. 13. THE CANADIAN PRESS/Chad Hipolito Listen to this article 00:02:29 VICTORIA — British Columbia Premier David Eby says his fellow premiers and the federal government have hatched a game plan to fight U.S. tariffs, with conservative premiers lobbying Republican counterparts, left-leaning provincial leaders courting the Democrats, and Ottawa focusing on president-elect Donald Trump. The premiers and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau talked about using their political diversity and connections to thwart the prospect of Trump's proposed 25 per cent tariffs on imports from Canada and Mexico, Eby said Thursday in a year-end interview. He said it was discussed that conservative premiers Danielle Smith in Alberta, Doug Ford in Ontario and Nova Scotia's Tim Houston are well-placed to lobby Republican governors and business leaders. Eby said as a New Democrat he will likely have more in common with Democrat governors and business leaders from the West Coast states. "I can easily have conversations with governors and businesses down the West Coast of the U.S., where we have close relationships and our politics are very similar," he said. "Premier Smith can have conversations with Republican governors. That would be more challenging for me, and (she) would have more connections potentially with the Trump administration than an NDP administration in B.C. would." He said a meeting last week between the premiers and Trudeau discussed Canada's diversity of representation, and how it could bring leverage and advantages in tariff talks. "It's interesting, there was a lot of talk about what unity means in terms of Canada's response to the tariffs," he said. "There's obviously a diversity of views around the Council of the Federation table of all the premiers. Certainly, mine is not the same as Premier Smith's or Premier Ford's or Premier Houston's, and that diversity of views is actually potentially a significant strength for us as we enter into these discussions." Eby also said he was prepared to appear on American's right-leaning Fox News TV network, as did premiers Ford and Smith. "Anything that I can do to support the national effort to protect the families in Canada from the impact of tariffs and also families in the U.S. from those unjustified tariffs," he said. "Absolutely, if I thought it was helpful." This report by The Canadian Press was first published Dec. 5, 2024. Dirk Meissner, The Canadian Press See a typo/mistake? Have a story/tip? Iranian authorities on Wednesday, December 25, lifted a ban on Meta’ s instant messaging platform WhatsApp and Google Play, marking a first step in easing internet restrictions. This comes after the decision was made by the Supreme Council of Cyber Space during a meeting chaired by President Masoud Pezeshkian on Tuesday, December 24. Citing the meeting, Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) reported “A positive majority vote has been reached to lift limitations on access to some popular foreign platforms such as WhatsApp and Google Play.” Taking to X, Iran’s Minister of Information and Communications Technology, Sattar Hashemi, described the move as a “first step in removing internet limitations.” “The path will continue,” he added. X platform users have confirmed that they can make calls on WhatsApp and use Google Play without blocking filters. This move is part of Pezeshkian’s pledge to loosen social media platform regulations. In 2022, WhatsApp and Google Play were banned due to nationwide protests over the death of Mahsa Amini , who was detained by morality police for allegedly violating dress codes. The well-known social networking sites YouTube, Facebook , and X are still blocked after being banned in 2009. The Telegram messaging service was also banned in Iran by a court order in April 2018. However, Iranians who have good knowledge of using technology bypass these restrictions by using virtual private networks (VPNs).
The Jumbo monument in St. Thomas, Ont. will be lit in teal Saturday night as the city honours hockey legend Joe Thornton. Both his home city, and the city of San Jose, Calif. have declared ‘Nov. 23 as “Joe Thornton Day” as the Sharks retire his number, 19, prior to their game against the Buffalo Sabres. “Joe Thornton Day in San Jose. It sounds pretty good, eh?” Thornton told a crowd at a press conference on Friday. “We’re changing it to Joe Thornton Weekend, by the way,” he laughed. The St. Thomas, Ont. native is beloved and has been embraced by the community since 2005 when he was traded to California from Boston. Thornton ranks first in team history in many categories like assists (804) and points per game (0.96). He’s second all-time in points (1,055). “I never thought I'd get my own day, but here we are,” said Thornton. “You know how important the Sharks are for the city when one of their former players gets honored like this. This city bleeds teal.” Back in his hometown, city council passed a motion at this week’s meeting to declare it “Joe Thornton Day” as well. “We have prepared a proclamation ... and we will be taping that proclamation and also sending it off to our friends in San Jose so that they know that St. Thomas will also be doing this the same thing and recognizing one of our favorite sons,” said Joe Preston, St. Thomas mayor. The Sharks held an alumni game Friday night with Thornton acting as honorary captain for both teams. He and his son, River, led the players onto the ice in front of a sold-out crowd. River and Joe’s father, Wayne Thornton, were coaches. Before ending his media conference, Thornton smiled, and said “let's all have a great Joe Thornton Day. Music producer Richard Perry, known for his iconic collaborations with numerous artists from Carly Simon to Barbra Streisand, has died at the age of 82. Daphna Kastner, Perry’s friend, confirmed his death to news outlets. “He maximized his time here,” Kastner said in a statement to ABC News . “He was generous, fun, sweet and made the world a better place. The world is a little less sweeter without him here. But it’s a little bit sweeter in heaven.” Kastner said that Perry died at a Los Angeles hospital after suffering cardiac arrest. Perry cemented his legendary status by producing a number of popular albums in the Seventies, including Simon’s No Secrets , Streisand’s Stoney End , and Ringo Starr’s self-titled LP Ringo , as well as his following LP Goodnight Vienna . On top of his professional successes, Perry detailed his robust personal life in his 2021 memoir Cloud Nine: Memoirs of a Record Producer . His marriages to Linda Goldner, his first wife, and Rebecca Broussard ended in divorce. More recently, Perry was in a relationship with Jane Fonda from 2009 until 2017. In a 1973 interview with Rolling Stone , Simon said that working with Perry is like working with “a movie director.” “He sees himself as holding the camera, as directing the players, as calling the final shots, as doing a theme, rather than as an interpreter,” she said. “Richard has much more endurance than I have and much more perseverance, so where I would leave off, he would continue. Whenever he tried to direct my singing in a certain way and I would try to go along with direction, it ended up unnatural. He would realize that and say, ‘I’m sorry. Go back and sing it the way you feel it,’ and that would invariably end up to be the right way.’” The producer built a reputation over his storied career working with accomplished artists. According to Variety , Simon said she recorded over 100 takes of “You’re So Vain” at Perry’s direction. Streisand also wrote about Perry in her 2023 memoir, saying, “Richard had a knack for matching the right song to the right artist.” The list of artists Perry worked with during his time in the music industry is extensive, including Rod Stewart, Neil Diamond, Donna Summer, Harry Nilsson, and the Pointer Sisters. Over the course of his career, Perry was nominated for seven Grammys and in 2015 he was honored with a lifetime achievement award by the Grammys. “Perry is a commercial genius,” Stephen Holden declared in Rolling Stone in 1973. “The quality of sound Perry can produce is frightening. It is cold and glamorous in its corporate calculation, flexible enough to embrace the entire pop mainstream. Voices — Nilsson’s, Streisand’s, Simon’s — through electronic manipulation, become perfect technological artifacts, and every song a potential hit single.”Army Chief of Staff visits home of Army Aviation

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) — Gratifying as it was for Sean McDermott to catch up with his family and get some rest during Buffalo’s bye week, the Bills coach on Wednesday found comfort returning to his weekly routine and familiar wardrobe — a gray T-shirt and sweatpants. “When I’m not wearing those, I go to my closet and I don’t know what to wear. I’m kind of like not myself,” he said before pulling up his hoodie for emphasis to reveal the gray shirt he had on underneath. “So I was telling some of the guys this morning, ‘It’s good to be back.’” Though there remain challenges ahead, these are upbeat times in Buffalo . The Bills (9-2) are off to their best start since 1992. They remain in contention for the AFC’s top seed by entering their break following a 30-21 win over Kansas City (10-1). And Buffalo is in position to clinch its fifth straight AFC East title as early as Sunday. To do so, the Bills would need Miami to lose to Green Bay on Thursday night, and Buffalo to win its game over San Francisco (5-6) on Sunday night. Buffalo has won six straight since back-to-back losses at Baltimore and Houston, and scored 30 or more points in each of its past five outings. Refreshed as McDermott sounded and appeared, it didn’t take long for him to revert to his game-at-a-time script when assessing what’s on the line this weekend. “We’re mostly focused on our level of play this week against a good football team,” he said. McDermott shed little light on the status of Buffalo’s lengthy list of injured players. There’s no timetable yet on Matt Milano being activated off injured reserve, even though the starting linebacker practiced fully for the first time since tearing his left biceps during a training camp practice in mid-August. Milano has actually missed nearly 14 months since sustaining a season-ending injury to his right leg in Week 5 last season. Milano revealed little during a brief interview following practice. “I feel all right. Getting back into it with the team,” said Milano, who no longer wore a red non-contact jersey in practice. Meantime, rookie receiver Keon Coleman, who has missed two games with a right wrist injury, and starting right tackle Spencer Brown, who missed one game with an ankle injury, were limited in practice. Tight end Dalton Kincaid (knee) was Buffalo's only player not practicing. The Bills also opened the three-week window for backup rookie defensive tackle DeWayne Carter (wrist) and backup offensive lineman Tylan Grable (groin) to return. McDermott has another positive going for him revolving around the bye week. The Bills are 8-0 coming out of their break since McDermott took over as coach in 2017. “I don’t really have the, hey, this is exactly what we do formula,” McDermott said on whether he’s changed his bye week approach. “It’s more of us really just getting back to what we do, getting back to basics.” AP NFL: https://apnews.com/hub/nflTravis Kelce Lost 1 'Very Special' Item In Home Burglary
