Blaze quartet speeds to relay win at ringette skills competition‘Y2K’: You had to be thereAs snow blankets the Colorado mountains, outdoor enthusiasts have a unique opportunity: the winter hut trip. Whether you’re a skier or a snowshoer, a hut trip offers an excellent opportunity to connect with nature while exploring the rugged beauty of the state’s wilderness and enjoying the warmth and camaraderie of a cozy mountain hut. From the towering peaks of the San Juan Mountains to the snow-covered trails in Summit County, Colorado’s winter hut trips provide an unforgettable experience for adventurers of all levels. Huts fill up fast, so check each property’s for pricing and availability. Located between Telluride and Silverton near the top of Ophir Pass in the San Juan Mountains, the Opus Hut was built for backcountry skiers, mountaineers, hikers and mountain bikers. At 11,700 feet, the hut sits at treeline with low-angle glades below and open slopes above. While intermediate powder skiing is available out the back door of the hut, owner Travis Mohrman said the terrain is best suited for experienced backcountry skiers. Mohrman estimates that 15% to 20% of the groups visiting Opus Hut do so with guides. “They’re not personally comfortable with the terrain or they’re not from the area,” Mohrman said. “They guides are knowledgeable about local conditions — what the snow is, what’s safe and what’s not safe.” The cabin accommodates up to 20 people in five rooms. Some visitors book the whole hut and bring friends and family, while others reserve available beds in unbooked rooms. The hut features solar-powered lighting and 110-volt outlets for charging electronic devices. It also has filtered drinking water, hot and cold tap water, and indoor composting toilets. It provides full bedding and clean sleeping bag liners. During winter, the hut has four to six employees who sleep in a separate cabin. They prepare meals with natural, organic, and, when possible, locally grown products. The hut accommodates vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free diets–just be sure to inform the staff beforehand. It also offers beer, wine, and a limited selection of spirits for purchase. “You can travel much lighter if you don’t have to bring in your food,” said Mohrman, who took over the hut three years ago. “You don’t have to focus on the upkeep of being in the backcountry.” Reservations for Opus Hut open Aug. 1. “The winter fills up quick,” Mohrman said. “Every winter weekend books in the first five minutes.” Nestled at 11,200 feet in the San Juan National Forest, Campfire Ranch Red Mountain Pass is the perfect base for exploring world-class skiing, split boarding, snowshoeing, and ice climbing. Located between Silverton and Ouray, it’s is accessible during the winter via a half-mile backcountry over-snow approach. Campfire Ranch is an ideal choice for novices. While other Colorado hut systems require you to carry your own food, bring sleeping bags, and live off-grid, this one provides food service, solar-powered electricity, Wi-Fi, and bedding. The dog-friendly cabin accommodates eight people. “We took a hospitality approach to remove barriers to entry for people who want to have the experience but don’t have the gear or the knowledge,” said Katrin Meiusi, director of marketing for the properties. Campfire Ranch first opened a campground on the Taylor River in Almont near Crested Butte. RVs are not permitted at the campground, which is open from May to October. Amenities include unlimited firewood, clean bathrooms, and drinkable well water. The 38 backcountry huts managed by the non-profit 10th Mountain Division Hut Association are connected by 350 miles of trails among some of the tallest peaks in the lower 48 states. All huts, some of which accommodate up to 17 people, have kitchens with propane burners for cooking — propane is provided. They provide pots, pans, potholders, dishware, cooking and eating utensils, a percolator or French press for coffee, salt and pepper, paper towels, dish soap, hand sanitizer, cleaning supplies and trash bags. Some huts have ovens and propane grills. All huts provide lighting from on-site solar power, propane or a generator. A few huts also have outlets for charging small devices such as phones. The huts have either an outhouse or an indoor bathroom with toilet paper supplied. All huts include mattresses and pillows, but you must bring your sleeping bag and pillowcase. Summit Hut Association operates five backcountry huts open for winter from November to May. Francie’s and Janet’s cabins are also open for summer use from July to September. All huts have solar-powered lights, fully stocked kitchens, and wood-burning stoves. Francie’s, Janet’s, and Sisters’ cabins have saunas and indoor toilets. The association hosts its annual Backcountry Ball fundraiser in October at The Maggie on Peak to kick off the season. The event includes dinner, drinks, a silent auction and entertainment. Proceeds help maintain the network of backcountry cabins.
The Bay Ridge Manor was filled with festive cheer as the New York State Young Republicans hosted their 27th annual holiday gala. The theme celebrated the growing Republican presence in New York’s outer boroughs, and the Dec. 19 event brought together party leaders, elected officials and young conservatives for an evening of unity and inspiration. Brooklyn GOP Chairman Richard Barsamian and New York State Republican Party Chairman Ed Cox were among the evening’s prominent speakers. Reflecting on the year’s successes, Barsamian described the November elections as “a mandate of common sense and reality” and emphasized the party’s role in safeguarding America’s future. Get the Full Story “The era of Obama, Biden, Pelosi, and Clinton is over,” said keynote speaker Cox. “The next president of the United States will be Donald J. Trump.” He also highlighted the importance of breaking the Democratic supermajority in Albany, crediting victories like that of state Sen.-elect Steve Chan as pivotal to the party’s momentum. Our civic and sacred duty to hold onto hope Assembly Member Alec Brook-Krasny, whose district encompasses parts of Bay Ridge, Dyker Heights and Coney Island (and who this year fought off Democratic challenger Chris McCreight ), praised the event’s impact. “We spoke about our past successes and the path to future victories as a unified party of responsible Republicans,” he said. Assembly Member Michael Novakhov echoed these sentiments, celebrating the enthusiasm of young leaders. “It was a fantastic evening celebrating the holiday season with so many incredible young leaders dedicated to making a difference,” he said. Novakhov, whose district includes Manhattan Beach, parts of Brighton Beach, Gravesend, and Sheepshead Bay, ultimately edged out Democratic challenger Joey Cohen-Saba in a closely contested race. First elected in 2023, the pol previously worked as a host on the Russian-language radio station FreedomFM. Meanwhile, in SD-17 — the borough’s first Asian-majority state Senate district — Chan toppled his predecessor, state Sen. Iwen Chu, by more than 5,000 votes . In a heartfelt speech at the gala, Chan recounted his journey from immigrant beginnings to public service. “For the last 47 years I’ve lived in Brooklyn, I was campaigning and didn’t even know it,” he said, reflecting on his work ethic, military service, and dedication to his community. “Enough nonsense is enough. We’re going to vote for this guy that we know, that grew up here, that wore the same shoes as us.” The gala also bridged the gap between seasoned leaders and the next generation, with Young Republican member Stefano Forte delivering the benediction and NYSYRC Chairman Peter Giunta recognizing the rising diversity within the party. “Ten years ago, Brooklyn was entirely blue. Now, we have leaders like Lester Chang, Michael Novakhov, and Steve Chan making waves,” Giunta said, emphasizing the importance of continuing the hard work. Giunta is stepping down from his current role as state chairman to become national chairman. Former Sen. Marty Golden, a revered figure in the local Republican community, was among the honored guests, alongside leaders like James Nolan, a Westchester County legislator, and newly elected officials from Staten Island and Brooklyn. Other highlights included birthday congratulations for NYYRC member Mario Nicoletto, complete with a cake and a sing-along, and an award from the NYSYR to Michael Zembricki, the New York state director for the Republican National Committee. His mother accepted the award on his behalf. The evening concluded with a call to action for 2025 and beyond, as attendees were reminded of the work still ahead. “For the first time in a very long time, this party has some momentum,” one speaker said. “We cannot take our foot off the gas.”

This Is What Whales Are Betting On Trump Media & TechnologyEven as a kid, I knew we had weather to beat if we wanted a good harvest. So when the tractor hit the straightaway in our valley – where our family had for four generations – I always popped it up a gear. The dust flew and I was dog tired, but smiling. Harvest time holds both hope and exhaustion for farm families. An entire year of work, making or breaking our finances. And each year gets harder. Now, as President-elect Donald Trump prepares to remake the American economy with massive tariffs, he has a central challenge coming from the heartland that gave him so much support: Get tough on trade, without . The reality is, after losing , today we’re at a troubling tipping point – for the first time, at risk of wiping out our domestic food supply within a generation. We can also revive it. The situation is shockingly dystopian: We’re killing off America’s family farms while becoming overreliant on foreign food. In 2025, we’re projected to have a – importing $42.5 billion more than we’re exporting, when we should be supplying America’s food and selling excess abroad. To be clear, one of the many problems driving rural decline – after a century of economic, technological and political reasons – is unfair trade. Letting it go for decades left farmers in an anti-competitive environment against countries with cheaper labor. And China became a massive customer willing to suddenly drop purchases, depressing prices while holding America hostage. The last Trump administration’s policies led to a farmland reaction that puzzled many, but shouldn’t have. most farmers supporting tariffs, even though most reported harm as retaliatory tariffs from other countries made their goods more expensive abroad and sent sales plummeting. The reason: Farmers knew they had been getting screwed for decades, so they viewed it as short-term pain for long-term gain. Today both parties have backed off new markets, while blaming the other. Regardless, the even more fragile state of American farming and tangle of global trade problems – both unfair standards hurting farmers and a drop in trade hurting farmers – mean America needs a policy that toughens standards while simultaneously encouraging more trade. How? Threaten the sledgehammer, but use the scalpel. Trump is in the unique position of the world already taking his tariff threats seriously. He should use it as leverage, but in a targeted trade strategy that knocks down trade barriers without accepting the false choice between the freewheeling trade of the 1990s or destroying struggling farmers’ income. We can both draw a hard line and protect farmers from foreign retaliation. One part of a targeted trade strategy is pursuing narrower deals where America can better exert its leverage. Stephanie Mercier, an economist with the Farm Journal Foundation, told me deals around a specific product in a specific country can open markets for farmers, with fewer trade-offs than deals involving many products across multiple countries. The other part of targeted trade is demanding accountability, including removing inconsistent trade policies – a task that’s also easier if America uses leverage to negotiate targeted deals with individual countries. One example is inconsistent seasonal restrictions. Michigan farmers aren’t allowed to sell asparagus into foreign markets during those countries’ prime season. But the same isn’t required of those countries, meaning Michigan farmers compete with foreign asparagus all year, as podcast. Why shouldn’t both countries be required to import only part of the year? If America pursues a targeted strategy, we can emerge with a tougher trade stance and a large number of small trade deals with clearer benefits for America. Alternatively, if America loses control of negotiations, retaliation against American exports will wipe out more struggling farms. More Americans than ever care about where their food comes from, meaning new markets in the United States. But that will take time and a lot of change, and continuing the current trend – 45,000 lost per year on average for a century – means wiping out most of our remaining family farms in 40 years. Looking back, the best part of harvest was sunset, gold settling into oranges and purples, signaling the last few hours of work. But part of the reason was I thought it would always give way to a new day – the sun also rising, as Ernest Hemingway wrote. The problem is the sun setting on the American farmer has long been threatening permanent black night. Let’s make sure it rises again.

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. (AP) — This was not the homecoming scenario Kirk Cousins would have scripted. Cousins' return to Minnesota, his NFL home from 2018 through 2023, on Sunday comes as he is hearing speculation about his job security in Atlanta. Cousins has thrown six interceptions with no touchdowns in the Falcons' three-game losing streak. That includes four picks in last week's 17-13 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers, his most in a decade.
