Despite consistent warnings from intelligence and law enforcement agencies in Australia and globally, public discussion around this issue often falls short. We need to understand why it persists and how to disrupt it before it escalates. Australian Security Intelligence Organization said on 6 December that about 20 percent of its priority counterterrorism cases involved minors. Since 2017, ASIO and the AFP has investigated 35 young Australians for violent extremism, some as young as 12. Young adults are also a risk factor, as illustrated this month by the apparently ideologically motivated killing of a healthcare CEO in the US. To address their radicalization, policymakers must grapple with agency: radicalized people are not just vulnerable and manipulated; political violence can be their response to both real and perceived grievances. A Five Eyes report issued this month highlights disturbing case studies of youth involvement in violent extremism across Australia, Britain, Canada, New Zealand and the United States. These case studies offer valuable insights but focus on social media. While digital environments are important, we risk overshadowing the deeper psychological, societal and cultural factors that underlie youth radicalization. We must determine what differentiates those merely exposed to extremist content and those who are radicalized by it. Online interactions may exacerbate radicalization but are not the sole factor. Multi-faceted vulnerabilities are part of the answer. For example, individuals who feel alienated, unsupported or marginalized may find a sense of belonging or purpose in extremist ideologies. Understanding complex factors, and their role in the cycle of radicalization, is necessary to disrupt the cycle. We must focus on understanding why certain individuals, particularly young people, are drawn to extremist ideologies in the first place. This includes understanding the uncomfortable issue of youth agency in radicalization. Agency is absent from the Five Eyes report and much of public discussion. We cannot view radicalized young people only as vulnerable victims. We must consider their conscious participation as an attempt to resolve real or perceived grievances. While agency is tricky to assess in the case of radicalized minors, it is particularly relevant in assessing cases of adult young persons, aged 18 to 25. This demographic is more likely to be politically aware and may be motivated to violent extremism due to a radical ideology or political grievance. The Federal Trade Commission has opened a broad antitrust investigation into Microsoft , including of its software licensing and cloud computing businesses, a source familiar with the matter said Wednesday. The probe was approved by FTC chair Lina Khan before her likely departure in January, following the presidential election victory of Donald Trump and the expectation he will appoint a fellow Republican with a softer approach towards business. The agency is examining allegations that the software giant is potentially abusing its market power in productivity software by imposing punitive licensing terms to prevent customers from moving their data from its Azure cloud service to other competitive platforms. Microsoft declined to comment. The FTC did not immediately respond to a Reuters’ request for comment. FTC antitrust lawyers are set to meet with Microsoft competitors next week to gather more information about the technology company’s business practices, Bloomberg reported earlier on Wednesday. Microsoft shares were down more than 1% in after-hours trading.None

For Makenzie Gilkison, spelling is such a struggle that a word like rhinoceros might come out as “rineanswsaurs” or sarcastic as “srkastik.” The 14-year-old from suburban Indianapolis can sound out words, but her dyslexia makes the process so draining that she often struggles with comprehension. “I just assumed I was stupid,” she recalled of her early grade school years. But assistive technology powered by artificial intelligence has helped her keep up with classmates. Last year, Makenzie was named to the National Junior Honor Society. She credits a customized AI-powered chatbot, a word prediction program and other tools that can read for her. “I would have just probably given up if I didn’t have them,” she said. Artificial intelligence holds the promise of helping countless other students with a range of visual, speech, language and hearing impairments to execute tasks that come easily to others. Schools everywhere have been wrestling with how and where to incorporate AI, but many are fast-tracking applications for students with disabilities. Getting the latest technology into the hands of students with disabilities is a priority for the U.S. Education Department, which has told schools they must consider whether students need tools like text-to-speech and alternative communication devices. New rules from the Department of Justice also will require schools and other government entities to make apps and online content accessible to those with disabilities. There is concern about how to ensure students using it — including those with disabilities — are still learning. Students can use artificial intelligence to summarize jumbled thoughts into an outline, summarize complicated passages, or even translate Shakespeare into common English. And computer-generated voices that can read passages for visually impaired and dyslexic students are becoming less robotic and more natural. “I’m seeing that a lot of students are kind of exploring on their own, almost feeling like they’ve found a cheat code in a video game,” said Alexis Reid, an educational therapist in the Boston area who works with students with learning disabilities. But in her view, it is far from cheating: “We’re meeting students where they are.” Ben Snyder, a 14-year-old freshman from Larchmont, New York, who was recently diagnosed with a learning disability, has been increasingly using AI to help with homework. “Sometimes in math, my teachers will explain a problem to me, but it just makes absolutely no sense,” he said. “So if I plug that problem into AI, it’ll give me multiple different ways of explaining how to do that.” He likes a program called Question AI. Earlier in the day, he asked the program to help him write an outline for a book report — a task he completed in 15 minutes that otherwise would have taken him an hour and a half because of his struggles with writing and organization. But he does think using AI to write the whole report crosses a line. “That’s just cheating,” Ben said. Schools have been trying to balance the technology’s benefits against the risk that it will do too much. If a special education plan sets reading growth as a goal, the student needs to improve that skill. AI can’t do it for them, said Mary Lawson, general counsel at the Council of the Great City Schools. But the technology can help level the playing field for students with disabilities, said Paul Sanft, director of a Minnesota-based center where families can try out different assistive technology tools and borrow devices.

The opinion editor at Germany’s leading newspaper Die Welt has resigned over the decision to publish an op-ed by Elon Musk, in which he defended the anti-immigration Alternative for Germany (AfD) party. “I have always enjoyed running the opinion pages of Welt and Welt am Sonntag. Today, an article written by Elon Musk appeared in Welt am Sonntag. I handed in my resignation yesterday, after it went to print,” Eva Marie Kogel wrote on X. The billionaire owner of SpeceX, Tesla and X (formerly Twitter) wrote the article after praising AfD on social media. In his op-ed, the major ally of US President-elect Donald Trump hailed AfD as “the last spark of hope” for Germany. The billionaire insisted that its “pragmatic” approach will usher in a revival of the country, while arguing that other parties are out of touch with regular people. “The traditional parties have failed Germany. Their policies have led to economic stagnation, social unrest and an erosion of national identity,” Musk wrote. “Despite being far-right, AfD represents political realism that resonates with many Germans who feel that their concerns are being ignored by the establishment.” Musk further defended the AfD, stating that “their portrayal as far-right is clearly false.” According to German media, the publication of the op-ed sparked intense debates among the staff at Die Welt, with some viewing it as meddling in the snap parliamentary election, which is scheduled for February 2025. Jan Philipp Burgard, Die Welt’s senior reporter, penned a rebuttal to Musk, calling his praise of AfD “fatally flawed” and arguing that it was “a big mistake” not to label the party as far-right. Another Die Welt journalist, Franziska Zimmerer, insisted in her own op-ed that the text written by Musk “should not have appeared” in the paper. “Election appeals, no matter the party, have no place in independent media,” she wrote. Founded in 2013, AfD has been pushing for the tightening of asylum laws and fighting organized crime and Islamic extremism. The party has become more popular in recent years, winning its first regional election in Thuringia in September. The 2025 election was called after the ruling three-party coalition collapsed due to the conflict over budget.

Tens of millions of dollars will be pouring into Western New York for environmental projects in 2025. The $36.1 million will be shared among groups aiming to decrease pollution, improve wildlife habitat, upgrade energy efficiency infrastructure and provide better public accessibility to the outdoors. The money was awarded to municipalities, businesses and nonprofit organizations in the region from the New York Regional Economic Development Councils Initiative , which announced the awards Monday. Funded projects include $1.6 million to the City of Buffalo to expand its residential composting program; $10 million to the town of Mina in Chautauqua County to construct a new wastewater treatment facility; and $6.8 million to the town of Friendship in Allegany County to fix their wastewater treatment system. Another $1 million was awarded to Erie County to remove a portion of the Springville Dam for fish passage; the City of Tonawanda received $2 million to replace a floating dock system along the Erie Canal; and Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens received $1.4 million to upgrade its welcome center and other facilities. "Reducing harmful emissions while advancing climate equity in communities statewide is critical to improving health and quality of life for residents," said the state Department of Environmental Conservation's Interim Commissioner Sean Mahar, in a statement praising the projects awarded funding. "DEC is proud of its partnerships with municipal leaders and community members to support new and bolster sustained efforts to realize a cleaner, greener and more resilient future for New York State." In Cattaraugus and Niagara counties, money received will go to completing countywide inventories of brownfields. The inventories should help identify where there is cleanup and development potential. Other projects with funding include pre-development studies to promote the revitalization of the Waterfront Village along the Buffalo Harbor, a city-wide zoning code update in the city of Olean, improvements at the Richardson Olmstead Campus, restoration of the 100-year-old Our Lady of Victory Shrine & Basilica in Lackawanna and improvements at public recreation facilities across the Western New York region. Additionally, Lactalis, the cheese maker, received $3.75 million to install an efficient and electric heat system at its Buffalo plant. "Innovative solutions like those awarded today are transforming how we design, operate and power buildings across New York State," said New York State Energy Research and Development Authority President and CEO Doreen Harris. "Retrofitting existing structures and processes with carbon reducing strategies and breaking ground on cutting-edge new construction is how the state will stay at the forefront as we move toward a clean energy economy." The New York Regional Economic Development Councils Initiative was established in 2011. It is made up of community, business, academic leaders and members of the public in each region of the state. In turn, these regional groups advise state agencies on the programs and projects needed most in their region. State agencies then administer the grants for projects that align with the REDC's strategic plan for the region. No. 7 Tennessee outscored UT Martin by 28 points in the second half in routing the visiting Skyhawks 78-35 on Friday afternoon in Knoxville. Chaz Lanier scored a game-high 18 points for the Volunteers (7-0), who expanded on a 35-20 halftime lead with a 43-15 second half. Felix Okpara had 10 points, 11 rebounds and four blocks, helping Tennessee command the paint along with Igor Milicic, who added nine points and 13 rebounds. Zakai Zeigler nearly had a double-double with 11 points and nine assists. The Volunteers used their size to their advantage, outscoring UT Martin 36-10 in the paint and out rebounding the Skyhawks 49-24. That included 20 offensive rebounds for Tennessee, which led to 19 second-chance points. UT Martin (2-5) was cold coming out of the locker room after halftime, missing its first eight shots. Conversely, the Vols started the second half with a nine-point run to extend their lead to 24 points. The Vols never let the Skyhawks score consecutive baskets in the first half, holding UT Martin to 25 percent shooting (4 of 16) from beyond the arc and allowing a total of only three points from the starting five. For the game, guard Josue Grullon led UT Martin with 15 points. The leading scorer in the Ohio Valley Conference entering Friday at 18.2 points per game, Grullon has not started any game for head coach Jeremy Shulman. Most of the Skyhawks' points -- 28 of 35 -- came from their reserves. The starting five combined to score seven points -- six points from Matija Zuzic and a free throw for Lamine Niag. The starters went a combined 2 of 18 from the floor, while UT Martin as a team shot 22.6 percent (12 of 53) from the field. The Skyhawks made 5 of 7 free-throw attempts and made 18 turnovers. The Volunteers, who got 23 points off the bench, were 8-for-10 and had 11 turnovers. Tennessee improved to 6-0 all-time against UT Martin since 1993. --Field Level Media
