South Korea's National Assembly has made a bold move by passing a resolution calling for the swift arrest of former Justice Minister Cho Kuk. The decision has sparked widespread attention and debate within the country, as well as on the international stage. In their final fixture of 2024, Kai Havertz scored the only goal of the game midway through the opening period. Arsenal’s victory takes them back to within six points of leaders Liverpool, having played one match more than the Reds, and a point clear of Chelsea following their Boxing Day defeat to Fulham. Ipswich, although much improved in the second half, have now lost five of their last six games, and remain just one place off the bottom of the table, three points away from safety. Mikel Arteta’s men have been rocked by Bukayo Saka’s hamstring injury which could keep the England winger, who has nine goals and 13 assists this season, out of action for the next two months. Gabriel Martinelli was handed the unenviable task of filling Saka’s shoes on Arsenal’s right-hand side and the Brazilian was involved in the only goal of the evening. The Ipswich defence failed to deal with Martinelli’s cross, with the ball falling to Leandro Trossard on the opposite side of the area. Trossard fought his way to the byline before fizzing his cross into the box for Havertz to convert from a matter of yards. It was Havertz’s third goal in four matches, his 12th of the season, and no less than the hosts, who at that stage of the match had enjoyed a staggering 91.4 per cent of the possession, deserved. Heading into Friday’s fixture, Arsenal had lost only one of their last 75 Premier League games when they had opened the scoring, and their triumph here rarely looked in doubt following Havertz’s strike. Havertz thought he had doubled Arsenal’s lead with 34 minutes gone when he converted Gabriel Jesus’ cross. But Jesus – handed his third successive start for the first time in a year – strayed into an offside position in the build-up. When referee Darren England blew for half-time, Ipswich had failed to touch the ball in Arsenal’s box, becoming just the second side to do so in the Premier League this season. Nottingham Forest were the other, away at Liverpool, before they went on to inflict Arne Slot’s sole defeat of his tenure so far. And for all of Arsenal’s possession, while they held just a one-goal advantage, Ipswich knew they were still in the game. An encouraging start to the second half for the Tractor Boys ensued, albeit without testing David Raya in the Arsenal goal. Shortly after the hour mark, Gabriel should have settled any growing Emirates nerves when he arrived unmarked to Declan Rice’s corner, but the defender headed wide of Arijanet Muric’s post when it looked easier to score. Martin Odegaard then forced a fine fingertip save from Muric at his near post after a mazy run and shot from the Arsenal skipper. Rice’s stinging goal-bound volley from the following corner was blocked by Dara O’Shea as Arsenal pushed for a game-killing second. Havertz should have tapped home Trossard’s header but he fluffed his lines. And moments later, substitute Mikel Merino’s effort was diverted from danger by a diving Muric. Ipswich looked to catch Arsenal on the counter, but the match ended without them registering a single effort on Raya’s goal. Ipswich fans goaded their opponents with chants of “boring, boring Arsenal”, but it was the Gunners who enjoyed the last laugh as they saw out 2024 with a win which keeps the pressure on Liverpool. In a heart-wrenching sequence of events that shook the Taiwanese community to its core, a mother and daughter fell victim to a cruel deception that ultimately led to their tragic decision to end their own lives. With Liverpool's surge in form and their closest competitors faltering, the odds of the Reds lifting the Premier League trophy at the end of the season have never been higher. Klopp's side have shown both resilience and quality throughout the campaign, and their performances on the pitch reflect a team determined to end their 30-year wait for a league title. The accusations against Manchester City stem from a series of leaked documents and emails that suggest the club may have misled the Premier League and UEFA regarding their financial affairs. The allegations paint a troubling picture of a club that may have circumvented financial regulations in order to gain an unfair advantage over their rivals. If proven true, these violations could result in severe sanctions for the club, including hefty fines, point deductions, and even potential expulsion from future competitions.
In the current competitive landscape of the Premier League, defensive solidity is often the difference between winning and losing crucial matches. Chelsea, a team with lofty ambitions and a talented squad, must address their defensive deficiencies to challenge for top honors consistently. Bringing in a player of Ramsdale's quality and potential could be a step in the right direction for the Blues. While the standings say the Jets are in last, they keep rolling up the firsts. In October, when the Patriots beat them 25-22 in New England, the Jets became the first team in NFL history to lose a game in which they scored 20-plus points, didn’t commit a turnover and gave up less than 250 total yards. Before that day, teams with that stat profile had gone 750-0. Now there’s new piece of ignominy: According to ESPN Stats & Info, they are the first team in the Super Bowl era to be favored in nine of their first 12 games and have a record of 3-9 or worse. To put it in perspective, the Jets are 3-6 (33.3 percent) straight up in games in which they’ve been favored. Per Covers.com, favorites have an outright record of 135-60 (69.2 percent). The main reason for this is the serious — probably unprecedented — overhype of this team. When Aaron Rodgers was deemed recovered from his Achilles tear, the bandwagon passed go and went directly to Super Bowl, skipping the necessary stops of respectability, a winning record and the first playoff berth in 14 years. The Jets were scheduled for six prime-time games (one was since flexed out) and could be found on the left side of the betting line for quite a few games in which there was no justification for them to be favored — such as on the road against the Steelers and Cardinals. It seems so insane now. Incredibly, they have been the favorite each of the past six games, going 1-5 SU and 1-5 ATS as the season went from bad to worse to over to embarrassing to all-time low. On Sunday, the Jets are — finally — underdogs of 6.5 points at Miami. I see a motivational mismatch. The Dolphins have won three of their last four games to get to 5-7 and will be playing for their postseason lives. The Jets have lost eight of their last nine and get a free weekend getaway to sun, 77 degrees and South Beach. The spread, while it looks large in the Post Line, is really just one scoring play. The pick: Dolphins -6.5. New Orleans Saints (-4.5) over NEW YORK GIANTS The Saints come in missing Chris Olave, Rasheed Shaheed and Swiss Army knife Taysom Hill, and list their three interior offensive linemen as questionable. They still have Derek Carr and Alvin Kamara to go against a Giants defense that will be without Dexter Lawrence. Not only that, the Giants are the last winless home team in the league and have set an NFL record by going 11 games without an interception. And the forecast of 47 and partly sunny is fair enough for a southern dome team coming north in December. Jacksonville Jaguars (+3.5) over TENNESSEE TITANS The Jaguars perked up after Azeez Al-Shaair’s hit on a sliding Trevor Lawrence last week. Mac Jones came in and threw for 235 yards, two touchdowns and led a backdoor cover. Question is: Can you put any stock in two late scores given up by a team that was way ahead? Another question: Do you want to lay more than a field goal with a Titans team that’s 3-9? MINNESOTA VIKINGS (-5.5) over Atlanta Falcons Yes, many Falcons games end up getting decided by less than this spread, but their last road game was a 38-6 loss in Denver, where the bottom fell out. The Dirty Birds have gone from 6-3 to 6-6 and scored an average of 12.0 ppg in the three losses with Kirk Cousins throwing six interceptions and zero touchdown passes in those games. He’d had designs on returning to Minnesota as a conquering hero but Brian Flores’ defense will have other ideas. PHILADELPHIA EAGLES (-12.5) over Carolina Panthers Kudos to the Cats, who have salvaged Bryce Young’s career and covered four spreads in a row, including near-misses against the Chiefs and Bucs. Still, there’s two touchdowns worth of difference between these rosters. That’s if the Eagles are motivated to bring the hammer down — and they should be, with DeVonta Smith returning and the push to get Saquon Barkley to 2,000 rushing yards in high gear. PITTSBURGH STEELERS (-6.5) over Cleveland Browns We got the full Jameis Winston Experience on Monday night — four touchdown passes and 497 passing yards when five and 499 would have been enough to cover in Denver. Instead, Winston threw an interception, his third of the game after two pick-sixes. You have to wonder how much the Browns have left emotionally at 3-9 on a short week with travel after such a disappointment. And now they face the 9-3 Steelers, who have had to wait only 21/2 weeks to seek revenge for their 24-19 loss in Cleveland. Las Vegas Raiders (+6.5) over TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS The Bucs won by a big margin two weeks ago at the Giants but that’s been a rare occurrence since the beginning of October. While the Raiders are 2-10 and have become somewhat of an anonymous team, they have two recent covers against the Chiefs. ARIZONA CARDINALS (-2.5) over Seattle Seahawks The Cardinals had won and covered four in a row before disintegrating offensively in a 16-6 loss at Seattle two weeks ago. They then blew a 19-6 lead in Minnesota and lost, 23-22. So Kyler Murray’s at the controls of a healthy, angry team that also has a rapid revenge motive against a Seattle foe that had no business winning last week’s game at the Jets. Buffalo Bills (-4.5) over LOS ANGELES RAMS The Bills had to take the cross-country trip after their 35-10 snow globe rout of the 49ers that was punctuated by Josh Allen’s MVP moment on the touchdown he both threw and scored. Are they ripe for a bit of a lull against a dangerous Rams team? Normally I’d say yes, but at 10-2, the Bills sit just a game behind the Chiefs for top seed — with the tiebreaker — and the potential to get the AFC title game in Orchard Park will keep them very much interested. SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS (-4) over Chicago Bears The Bears are certainly a candidate for the new-coach bounce as Thomas Brown replaces Matt Eberflus after the disastrous ending in Detroit on Thanksgiving. Unlike Robert Saleh, who was more a scapegoat, a case can be made that Eberflus was the Bears’ biggest problem. However, there are injury concerns for their top weapons D’Andre Swift, DJ Moore and Keenan Allen, and the 49ers are far from out of it in the NFC West even at 5-7. Los Angeles Chargers (+4) over KANSAS CITY CHIEFS The Chiefs have the best record in the NFL at 11-1 and their record against the spread is lower-middle of the pack at 5-7. The real alarms sound when you look at the last six games, where they are 5-1 SU and 0-6 ATS. Yes, Kansas City has not covered a spread since Oct. 20 (Week 7) — so long ago, the Mets played that night. Jim Harbaugh will look to turn this into a slugfest, and Andy Reid won’t have Harrison Butker around at the end. Betting on the NFL? Monday DALLAS COWBOYS (+5.5) over Cincinnati Bengals Cowboys have some extra rest after Thanksgiving and will throw at Joe Burrow the healthiest version of their defense they’ve had all season. DeMarcus Lawrence and Trevon Diggs could return to join the likes of Micah Parsons, Daron Bland and DeMarvion Overshown. The Bengals have lost four games in which they’ve scored 33 points or more. Best bets: Cardinals, Chargers, Cowboys Lock of the week: Cardinals (Locks 7-6 in 2024) Last week: 8-8 overall, 2-1 Best Bets Thursday: Packers.

The White House announced on Dec. 10 that President Joe Biden intends to veto a bipartisan bill proposing the first significant expansion of federal district court judgeships in more than 30 years. House Republicans are moving to advance the legislation before the close of the 118th Congress, but congressional Democrats argue that the measure’s timing undermines its original bipartisan intent. The White House weighed in on the controversy on Dec. 10, issuing a statement of administration policy panning the bill as “unnecessary to the efficient and effective administration of justice.” The statement argued that the legislation has not fully accounted for existing judicial resources, such as senior-status judges and magistrates. The Biden administration also took issue with the timing of the legislation, noting that the House delayed consideration until after the election when Trump’s victory assured him the opportunity to make the initial wave of appointments. “Hastily adding judges with just a few weeks left in the 118th Congress would fail to resolve key questions, especially regarding how the judges are allocated,” the statement said. It also pointed to “efforts by some Senators to hold open existing judicial vacancies” as evidence that judicial economy and caseload management were not the primary motivations for the bill’s passage. The statement concludes: “If the President were presented with S. 4199, he would veto it.” Democrats contend that bipartisan support that propelled the JUDGES Act through the Senate in August was predicated on the assumption that neither party knew which presidential candidate would oversee the first batch of appointments. With Trump’s victory, Democrats say that the bill’s fairness has been compromised. Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-N.Y.), ranking member of the Judiciary Committee, accused Republicans of delaying the bill until after the election to ensure that their preferred candidate benefitted. “Now here they are today, during the narrow window when the central premise behind the JUDGES Act is broken, trying to force this bill through the House on a partisan basis,” Nadler said. House Republicans say that the JUDGES Act addresses an urgent need to expand the judiciary. Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), chair of the Judiciary Committee, said during the Dec. 10 hearing that the bill allocates judgeships fairly, with several appointments going to states represented by Democratic senators. Under the current blue-slip system, which allows senators to veto judicial nominees in their states, both parties retain significant influence over the process. Sen. Todd Young (R-Ind.), the bill’s co-sponsor, criticized the White House’s veto threat and urged Biden to sign it if it makes it to his desk. “My broadly bipartisan bill is a common sense approach to a politically challenging problem and is widely supported by leading legal organizations across our country.” The bill’s phased rollout, beginning in January 2025, seeks to mitigate concerns about partisan exploitation. Trump would appoint 22 permanent and three temporary judges during his term, while subsequent administrations would oversee the remaining appointments through 2035. The judiciary currently has 677 authorized district court seats and 10 temporary ones. One of the highlights of the program is the collaborative projects between directors and AI experts, where they work together to create innovative and impactful content. And so, as the sun set on the training base, a new generation of soldiers stood ready to face the challenges ahead. They had passed through the crucible of training, received their rank badges, and taken the oath of service. For the parents who had witnessed this pivotal moment in their children's lives, it was a time of pride, admiration, and a touch of sadness. But above all, it was a moment of deep commitment and unbreakable bonds between families and the armed forces, as they stood united in the defense of their nation.Despite the challenging conditions, some sectors managed to outperform, demonstrating resilience and attracting investor interest. Companies in the healthcare, renewable energy, and consumer goods sectors showed strength, benefiting from favorable market conditions and strong fundamentals.
T oday in America, 60% of our people live paycheck to paycheck, 85 million people are uninsured or underinsured and 21.5 million households are paying more than 50% of their income on housing. We have one of the highest rates of childhood poverty of almost any developed country on Earth, and 25% of older adults are trying to survive on $15,000 a year or less. In other words, the United States has fallen far behind other major countries in protecting the most vulnerable, and our government has failed millions of working families. But while so many Americans are struggling to get by, the United States is spending record-breaking amounts of money on the military. In the coming days, with relatively little debate, Congress will overwhelmingly pass the National Defense Authorization Act, approving close to $900bn for the Department of Defense (DoD). When spending on nuclear weapons and “emergency” defense spending is included, the total will approach $1tn. We now spend more than the next nine countries combined. I don’t often agree with Elon Musk, but he is right when he says the Pentagon “has little idea how its annual budget of more than $800bn is spent.” The Department of Defense is the only government agency that has been unable to pass an independent audit. It recently failed its seventh attempt in a row and could not fully account for huge portions of its $4.126tn in assets. Very few people who have researched the military-industrial complex doubt that there is massive fraud, waste and cost over-runs in the system. Defense contractors routinely overcharge the Pentagon by 40% – and sometimes more than 4,000%. For example, in October, RTX (formerly Raytheon) was fined $950m for inflating bills to the DoD, lying about labor and material costs, and paying bribes to secure foreign business. In June, Lockheed Martin was fined $70m for overcharging the navy for aircraft parts, the latest in a long line of similar abuses. The F-35, the most expensive weapon system in history, has run up hundreds of billions in cost overruns. Today, as a result of massive consolidation in the industry, a large portion of the Pentagon budget now goes to a handful of huge defense contractors like Lockheed Martin, RTX, General Dynamics and Northrop Grumman. That consolidation has been extremely profitable for the industry: since 2022, these four contractors have brought in $609bn in revenues, including $353bn in US taxpayer funds, and recorded $57bn in profits. During that same period, they have spent $61bn on dividends and stock buybacks to make their wealthy stockholders even richer. These defense contractors also provide their CEOs with exorbitant compensation packages. In the last three years for which information is available, these companies paid their CEOs more than $257m combined – with annual salaries that are about 100 times more than the secretary of defense and 500 times more than the average newly enlisted service member. How does this happen? How do we keep handing huge amounts of money to companies that routinely overcharge the American taxpayer and often engage in fraud? The answer is not complicated. These companies – like the drug companies, insurance companies, Wall Street and the fossil fuel industry – spend millions on campaign contributions and lobbying. In the recent election cycle, defense contractors spent nearly $251m on lobbying and contributed almost $37m to political candidates. Surprise, surprise! Most members of Congress vote for greatly inflated military budgets with few questions asked. The lack of accountability at the Department of Defense is not just costing American taxpayer dollars. It’s costing lives. The United States is providing many billions of dollars to help defend Ukraine from Putin’s invasion. When defense contractors said they couldn’t ramp up production without more taxpayer support, Congress repeatedly appropriated emergency funding, with roughly $78.5bn going to buy equipment and services from the major defense contractors. How did those “patriotic” companies respond? They jacked up prices. RTX increased prices for Stinger missiles from $25,000 in the 1990s to $400,000 in 2023. Lockheed Martin and RTX raised the price of the Javelin missile system from about $263,000 per unit just before the war to $350,700 this year. Similar price hikes took place for Patriot missiles and other weapons. And make no mistake: every time a contractor pads its profit margins, fewer weapons reach the frontlines. The greed of these defense contractors is not just costing American taxpayers; it’s killing Ukrainians. The United States needs a strong military, but we do not need a defense system that is designed to make huge profits for a handful of giant defense contractors. We do not need to spend almost a trillion dollars on the military, while half a million Americans are homeless and children go hungry. In this moment in history, it would be wise for us to remember what Dwight D Eisenhower, a former five-star general, said in his farewell address in 1961: “In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military-industrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist.” What Eisenhower said was true in 1961. It is even more true today. I will be voting against the military budget.Amidst these fluctuations in gold prices, it is essential for individuals to stay informed and stay updated on the latest developments in the gold market.
