No automatic naturalization for foreign wives of Kuwaitis

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) — President-elect Donald Trump said Wednesday that he has chosen Keith Kellogg, a highly decorated retired three-star general, to serve as his special envoy for Ukraine and Russia. Kellogg, who is one of the architects of a staunchly conservative policy book that lays out an “America First” national security agenda for the incoming administration, will come into the role as Russia’s invasion of Ukraine enters its third year in February. Trump made the announcement on his Truth Social account, and said “He was with me right from the beginning! Together, we will secure PEACE THROUGH STRENGTH, and Make America, and the World, SAFE AGAIN!” Kellogg, an 80 year-old retired Army lieutenant general who has long been Trump’s top adviser on defense issues, served as national security adviser to Vice President Mike Pence , was chief of staff of the National Security Council and then stepped in as an acting security adviser for Trump after Michael Flynn resigned. As special envoy for Ukraine and Russia, Kellogg will have to navigate an increasingly untenable war between the two nations. The Biden administration has begun urging Ukraine to quickly increase the size of its military by drafting more troops and revamping its mobilization laws to allow for the conscription of troops as young as 18. The White House has pushed more than $56 billion in security assistance to Ukraine since the start of Russia’s February 2022 invasion and expects to send billions more to Kyiv before Biden leaves office in less than months. Trump has criticized the billions that the Biden administration has poured into Ukraine. Washington has recently stepped up weapons shipments and has forgiven billions in loans provided to Kyiv. The incoming Republican president has said he could end the war in 24 hours, comments that appear to suggest he would press Ukraine to surrender territory that Russia now occupies. As a co-chairman of the American First Policy Institute’s Center for American Security, Kellogg wrote several of the chapters in the group’s policy book. The book, like the Heritage Foundation’s “Project 2025,” is a move to lay out a Trump national security agenda and avoid the mistakes of 2016 when he entered the White House largely unprepared. Kellogg in April wrote that “bringing the Russia-Ukraine war to a close will require strong, America First leadership to deliver a peace deal and immediately end the hostilities between the two warring parties.” Trump's proposed national security advisor U.S. Rep. Michael Waltz (R-Fla.) tweeted Wednesday that “Keith has dedicated his life to defending our great country and is committed to bringing the war in Ukraine to a peaceful resolution.” Kellogg was a character in multiple Trump investigations dating to his first term. He was among the administration officials who listened in on the July 2019 call between Trump and Volodymyr Zelenskyy in which Trump prodded his Ukrainian counterpart to pursue investigations into the Bidens. The call, which Kellogg would later say did not raise any concerns on his end, was at the center of the first of two House impeachment cases against Trump, who was acquitted by the Senate both times. On Jan. 6, 2021, hours before pro-Trump rioters stormed the U.S. Capitol, Kellogg, who was then Pence’s national security adviser, listened in on a heated call in which Trump told his vice president to object or delay the certification in Congress of President Joe Biden ’s victory. He later told House investigators that he recalled Trump saying to Pence words to the effect of: “You’re not tough enough to make the call.” Baldor reported from Washington. AP writer Eric Tucker in Washington contributed to this report.A 7-5 record feels a whole better than 6-6 for East Tennessee State football coach Tre Lamb. Lamb knows it’s important to finish his first season leading the Bucs with a victory. While they’ve doubled the number of wins which ETSU achieved each of the previous two seasons, a winning record is something everyone can hang their hats on. It’s not an easy task for the Bucs (6-5 overall, 4-3 Southern Conference) who play at Virginia Military Institute on Saturday at noon. Sure the Keydets are 1-10 and 1-6, but just two weeks ago they beat the same Furman team which defeated the Bucs in Johnson City last week. “Our guys have a lot to play for — winning record in the Southern Conference, pride, a winning day for our seniors and getting to seven wins,” Lamb said. “We can carry so momentum into recruiting into the offseason, 7-5 feels a lot better than 6-6.” The Bucs will have to take care of the football, which has been the most frustrating part of the season for Lamb. They rank second in the country for most interceptions with 20, while Lamb played three quarterbacks — Gino English, Jaylen King and Baylor Hayes — against Furman. He promised that won’t happen Saturday, although he is waiting until game day to name a starter. “We are playing three quarterbacks right now which tells you we don’t have one,” Lamb said. “We’re not going to do musical chairs. We’re going to give it to one guy and let him go play.” VMI has also played multiple quarterbacks this season with four of them attempting 20 or more passes this season. JoJo Crump came in to hit 9-of-14 passes for 138 yards after replacing starter Chandler Wilson in last Saturday’s loss to Western Carolina. Hunter Rice, a hard-nosed 235-pound senior running back, has been the most productive offensive player with 713 yards and seven touchdowns this season. Still, the Keydets have been nowhere near as effective as the Bucs running the football. ETSU is averaging 194.1 yards rushing per game, led by Bryson Irby with 722 yards on 130 carries and Devontae Houston with 544 yards on 101 rushes. VMI has a legitimate star on the defensive side of the ball with linebacker Eric Rankin, who leads the Southern Conference with 103 tackles. He was named the FCS National Player of the Week with 18 tackles in VMI’s game against The Citadel. He is a disruptive force with 11 tackles for loss, 10 quarterback hurries and two forced fumbles. Defensive back Kouri Crump is next on the team with 85 tackles. ETSU has defensive standouts as well with linebackers Ray Coney with 89 tackles and William McRainey with 82 tackles. Zach West has 8.5 tackles, including 2.5 in the Bucs’ 24-21 win over Western Carolina two weeks ago. Among the defensive backs, Cam Sims has been responsible for 17 pass breakups, while Jaden Woods ranks fourth on the team in tackles. “I’m super proud of our guys for their effort this year,” Lamb said. “We could be sitting here realistically at 9-2 and 10-1 is not too far out of our reach if the ball bounces our way a couple of times.” To reach the goal in front of them, Lamb knows a game at VMI’s Alumni Memorial Stadium in late November provides a different challenge than a lot of other venues. Part of that is due to the Keydets and part of that is the environment. “They’re very chaotic defensively and do a good job of creating negative plays,” Lamb said. “It’s a really hard place to play. The grass is dormant this time of year, a slow track, typically overcast with gray skies, 35-40 degrees. They have a lot of tough military kids who are giving their best effort every week. We can’t let our circumstances of weather and location affect the way we prepare.”

With starting linebacker Ivan Pace Jr. on injured reserve, working his way back from a hamstring injury, the Minnesota Vikings have given more reps to Kamu Grugier-Hill and rookie Dallas Turner in recent weeks to help pick up the slack. The Vikings also signed former first-round pick Jamin Davis on Nov. 26 to a minimum contract to help bolster the depth chart. Matt Holder of Bleacher Report recently predicted that GM Kwesi Adofo-Mensah wasn't done sharpening the edges of his roster entering the season’s stretch run. In his NFC scouting reports for Week 14, Holder urged Adofo-Mensah and the Vikings to kick the tires on former three-time All-Pro linebacker Shaquille Leonard, a former $98.5 million, four-time All-Pro who remains a free agent. Here was Holder’s take on the potential move: “While the Vikings signed Jamin Davis to help fill in for Ivan Pace Jr., who was recently placed on injured reserve, it couldn't hurt to bring in Leonard as another option. The 29-year-old has a better track record than Davis and was solid against the run last year, racking up 88 total tackles in 14 games for two different teams.” During the 2023 season, Leonard played nine games for the Indianapolis Colts — the team that signed him to what was then one of the richest contracts in NFL history — and five games for the Philadelphia Eagles . He started three games for Philly last season due to injuries, and finished with 23 tackles and a sack. The fact that Philly opted to sign Devin White in free agency, only to cut White before he played a single regular season game, over Leonard is somewhat of a red flag. He’s been contemplating an uncertain future in the NFL, and landing in a place like Minnesota for a run at the Super Bowl could save what once looked like a legendary pro career. Would adding Shaquille Leonard bolster Minnesota’s Super Bowl hopes? Not in 2024. It would be one thing if Leonard spent time with another team this season. Instead, he’s been away from the NFL, spending the fall coaching a high school football team out in Georgia. Injuries unfortunately derailed Leonard’s career. He was unable to return to peak form following a serious back injury that required multiple surgeries, which is why the Colts waived him in the first place. Kicking the tires on Leonard feels more like a desperation move than a prudent one, and the Vikings aren’t close to that point with five games remaining in the regular season. Pornhub is not a pornography website, but a social media platform, legally speaking. That is the company’s view, at least, and the basis on which it says it does not have to meet a January deadline for age verification. Instead of being “providers of pornographic content published or displayed on the service,” the company says the rules that apply to it are those for social media and search engines, since it publishes content provided by users. The Age Verification Provider’s Association ( ) specifically warned Ofcom earlier in the year that this would happen, notes, but the regulator says websites must determine for themselves which section of the applies to the them. What form will take is uncertain, as the company has where it would have been obligated to implement age checks. Facial biometric age estimation and ID document uploads are among the options. Whatever the site chooses is now expected to be introduced in July, along with age checks by other online service providers that fall under “part 3.” A Spain-based pornography site operated by TechPump is the first in the country to implement age verification, according to an announcement from , which is supplying digital identity wallets to perform the verification. Gataca’s digital identity wallet is offered for free to consumers, and enables them to prove their age without sharing their identity or date of birth. The company says this protects minors from access to potentially harmful content, while preserving the anonymity of users. Gataca provides decentralized and self-sovereign identity (SSI) technologies, and launched its age verification solution in September. Users are issued a credential stating that they are 18 or 21 years old, and another that corresponds with a verified identity document. The process is managed by Gataca, and the adult website is not involved until the age assurance check is performed. The company says its digital ID wallet has been approved by the Spanish Data protection Agency (AEPD) for age data processing, and the age assurance method complies with the EU’s . | | | | | | | | |

PLYMOUTH MEETING, PA — ECRI has unveiled new solutions focused on Total Systems Safety (TSS) and Human Factors Engineering (HFE) to reduce errors, improve patient outcomes, and support healthcare provider well-being. The expanded offerings aim to tackle preventable harm through a proactive and comprehensive approach, replacing traditional, reactive safety measures. By combining safety science, workforce culture, and human factors expertise, ECRI provides systems-level guidance to healthcare organizations looking to create safer care environments. “Despite tireless efforts, serious risks persist within our fragmented healthcare system, with rates of preventable harm alarmingly high,” said Dheerendra Kommala, MD, chief medical officer at ECRI. “Traditional safety methods often fail to uncover and address the root causes of preventable harm. A systems-based approach goes further, tackling these underlying issues. This represents a transformative, integrated strategy—one that includes human factors and a commitment to equity—to establish a better, safer healthcare landscape for patients and the workforce.” ECRI’s TSS framework focuses on leadership, patient and family engagement, continuous learning, and fostering a “just culture” that treats errors and near misses as learning opportunities. The recent acquisition of The Just Culture Company has strengthened ECRI’s ability to lead safety-focused cultural change. Human Factors Engineering (HFE), an integral component of TSS, ensures that healthcare environments, workflows, and technologies are carefully designed to support both patient safety and staff efficiency. “ECRI’s team of independent, clinically informed human factors engineers has over 125 years of experience helping improve complex work systems,” said Patrice D. Tremoulet, PhD, HFE director. “We identify hidden barriers to healthcare quality and safety, resulting in workflows, technologies, care environments, and policies that support the work of healthcare providers, which results in enhanced patient outcomes and reduced provider burnout.” The expanded TSS solutions emphasize scalability and adaptability, helping healthcare systems prepare for future challenges like staffing shortages and increased patient volumes. By addressing deep-rooted issues, ECRI reinforces its commitment to transforming patient safety and care delivery standards nationwide. In an unusual briefing aimed at allaying public concern, the officials attributed the sightings to people spotting drones flying lawfully or misidentifying planes and helicopters. Officials from the Department of Homeland Security, the Federal Aviation Administration and the Federal Bureau of Investigation said their agencies are taking concerns seriously. But they have found nothing to suggest malicious foreign or criminal actors, they said, speaking on the condition of anonymity. The briefing came amid rising public anxiety and widening conspiracy theories. Efforts so far to downplay concern have fanned skepticism as well as demands for a concrete explanation from politicians from Massachusetts to Maryland, as well as from President-elect Donald Trump. Runways at New York Stewart International Airport in Orange County were closed for more than an hour starting at about 10 p.m. Friday following a sighting reported by the FAA, according to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which operates the airport. “This has gone too far,” New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said in a statement about the airport’s closure. Trump weighed in on Friday in a post on Truth Social: “Mystery Drone sightings all over the Country. Can this really be happening without our government’s knowledge. I don’t think so! Let the public know, and now. Otherwise, shoot them down!!!” The FBI official on Saturday suggested a certain amount of public overreaction, noting that while the agency has received about 5,000 tips by phone and the web in the past two weeks, fewer than 100 leads warranted further investigation. The recent spate of sightings began in New Jersey, where drones have been seen hovering above critical infrastructure such as water reservoirs, electric transmission lines, rail stations, police departments and military installations, Florham Park Chief of Police, Joseph Orlando, said in a Facebook post. Drones have even been spotted flying above Salem and Hope Creek Nuclear Generating Stations, prompting PSEG to contact the authorities, according to the company. One of the federal officials on Saturday confirmed drone sightings over Picatinny Arsenal, a U.S. military and research facility, and Naval Weapons Station Earle, a U.S. Navy base, both located in New Jersey. In Pennsylvania, Gov. Josh Shapiro on Friday said he’s directed the State Police to fly helicopters “to try and determine where these drones are originating from and what the purpose of these drones are.” He added: “We’ve been told, again, by our federal partners, it does not pose any kind of national security or personal security risk. But you know, as the old saying goes, trust but verify.” In Massachusetts, Gov. Maura Healey said she’s aware of the reported sightings, is monitoring the situation, and that state police are working with local and federal authorities. She urged drone operators to follow the law and ensure their safe use. New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy has contacted President Joe Biden as well as Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., and House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., urging federal legislation empowering the state’s local law enforcement to use advanced detection and mitigation technologies to deal with the drones. State officials didn’t specify exactly what those measures are. “It is clear that this is not a job the federal government can do on its own,” he wrote. Hochul, in her statement on Saturday, also called on Congress to pass a bill strengthening the FAA’s oversight of drones, which would extend to some state and local authorities. Saturday’s briefing follows White House, Pentagon and other national security officials’ previous assertions that the drones don’t pose a security risk and are not from a foreign entity. But the sightings are spreading geographically, with residents and legislators reporting unknown objects in neighboring states. Multistate sightings “Last night, beginning at around 9:45pm, I personally witnessed (and videoed) what appeared to be dozens of large drones in the sky above my residence in Davidsonville, Maryland (25 miles from our nation’s capital),” former Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan wrote in a post on X. He said the drones hovered above his house for almost a full hour and said the response from the federal government “is entirely unacceptable.” The FBI is leading the effort to determine the source of the sightings, including identifying where the drones are taking off and landing, according to a person familiar with the matter. Overnight from Thursday into Friday, there were 79 reports of drone sightings. While some may have been duplicate observations by different individuals, each call is treated as a separate incident, the person said. These sightings have been reported nightly since Nov. 18, with the exception of Thanksgiving, when no activity was reported. There have been few to no reports of suspicious drone activity during daylight hours. Some reports suggest that the drones are capable of remaining in the air for up to six hours, prompting questions about their specifications and purpose.
