As Zhang languished on the bench, whispers of discontent began to circulate among the team's supporters. Some accused him of resting on his laurels, content to coast by on past successes rather than putting in the hard work required to stay at the top. ALGIERS, Algeria Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune launched a strong critique Sunday against France over the lingering effects of its colonial rule on his country. This came during a speech delivered before both chambers of parliament addressing the nation in which he presented the achievements of his first presidential term from 2019-2024 and outlined his agenda for his second term, which began in September, according to an Anadolu correspondent. Tebboune said Algeria demands that France acknowledge its crimes committed during the colonial period from 1830-1962, emphasizing that the country seeks no material compensation. "We are pursuing the dignity of our ancestors," he said. "The number of Algerian martyrs throughout the 132 years of colonization is 5.6 million, and no amount of money can compensate for the loss of even one martyr during the resistance or armed struggle,” he stressed. The remarks came amid a severe political crisis between Algeria and France which led to the withdrawal of Algeria's ambassador and the summoning of the French ambassador. Algerian authorities attributed this escalation to "hostile acts committed by French foreign intelligence on Algerian soil." Tebboune also recalled the atrocities committed by the French colonial army, particularly under General Thomas Robert Bugeaud, governor-general of Algeria from 1841-1847, whom he described as "genocidal." He reiterated his commitment to addressing the colonial-era files with France and pointed out that France continues to hold 500 skulls of Algerians who were decapitated in the 19th century and taken to Paris. "We have only managed to recover 24 skulls so far," he noted. On the domestic front, Tebboune announced plans to launch a dialogue with political parties early next year "to strengthen state independence and bolster internal unity." He said the dialogue, for which an exact start date was not specified, would be "inclusive and deep," culminating in the introduction of new laws governing political parties and associations. *Writing by Rania Abu ShamalaNone
MONTEGO BAY – The Ocho Rios Drop-In Centre in Buckfield, St Ann, was transformed into a haven of Christmas warmth, thanks to young student philanthropist, Aryan Lakhwani. The 18-year-old St Ann native spearheaded a food drive during the Yuletide season, which facilitated the provision of meals and refreshments for homeless, vulnerable and mentally challenged persons from Ocho Rios and neighbouring communities, who visited the Centre on Christmas Eve, December 24. Lakhwani says the initiative was rooted in the belief that there is no greater reward than giving back to persons in need. He emphasises the importance of fostering a spirit of love and care for the society’s most vulnerable, pointing out that, “In a climate of peace and stability, like the one we nurture at the drop-in centre, we can truly make a difference.” Lakhwani, who has a history of community outreach having previously organised a debating competition involving primary schools in St Ann, reflects on the sharp contrast of the holiday experiences for different families. “While many families are fortunate enough to celebrate Christmas in comfort, there are countless brothers and sisters who do not have that luxury,” he tells JIS News. The young philanthropist adds that the joy of seeing smiles on the faces of those he helped, made the effort worthwhile. Lakhwani, who is enrolled in the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme at the American International School of Kingston (AISK), expresses the hope that more corporate and private citizens will contribute to the drop-in centre. “It’s important for our community to come together and support these initiatives,” he underscores. Mayor of St Ann’s Bay, Councillor Michael Belnavis, praised Lakhwani’s efforts, noting that the centre not only provides meals to more than 59 individuals daily, but also offers spiritual enrichment and emotional support. “The drop-in centre is a facility where we accommodate the homeless and persons who need help. We provide them with three meals a day, clothing, washdowns, medication, haircuts and spiritual guidance. Our goal is to create an environment where they feel loved and supported,” he told JIS News. Belnavis said the centre has evolved beyond a simple drop-in facility, noting that many individuals now find solace in staying overnight and, in some instances, have taken up residence. He highlighted the centre’s comprehensive interactive engagements, which include health seminars and recreational activities. “We read to them, embrace their concerns and motivate them. They also enjoy playing games, which contributes to their overall well-being,” the mayor pointed out. Councillor Belnavis said there are plans to expand the Ocho Rios Drop-In Centre to accommodate more individuals overnight, further enhancing the support available to those in need. “We want to ensure that everyone has a safe place to sleep, and access to the necessary resources,” he shared. Meanwhile, administrator at the St Ann Municipal Corporation, Suzette Prince, who also heaped praise on Lakhwani, said as the community celebrates the spirit of Christmas, the drop-in centre remains a symbol of “love and compassion” in Buckfield and, by extension, St Ann. “Through the combined efforts of individuals like Aryan Lakhwani and the ongoing support from local authorities, the centre continues to fulfill its mission of providing comfort, care and a sense of belonging to some of the society’s most vulnerable members. Nobody knows what tomorrow brings, which makes it even more important to look out for each other,” she told JIS News. Drop-in centres are the first point of contact for homeless people, offering a range of care including: a bath and other hygienic care, food and medical assessment. The Ocho Rios Drop-In Centre, which was opened on May 11, 2018, is a crucial part of the Ministry of Local Government and Community Development’s social protection programme. The facility, built at a cost of $14 million, is designed to accommodate the homeless, the elderly and individuals experiencing mental health challenges. During its inaugural year of operation, the centre catered to approximately 9,000 people. Persons interested in providing meals for the homeless are encouraged to utilise the available drop-in centres by contacting the Poor Relief Department, located at all 13 municipal corporations, to make the necessary arrangements. Secretary, Board of Supervision (for the relief of the poor in Jamaica), Treka Lewis, noted that persons who want to help the homeless through the provision of meals may do so. She points out, however, that the practice of “street feeding” is not encouraged, due to potential public health issues and other factors. -JIS -30
Three days after former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s death, the political tussle over the protocol followed at his funeral continued on Sunday, with Union ministers hitting out at the Congress for engaging in “shameful politics” over the demise of the former PM. Responding to allegations by the Congress that the government “insulted” Singh, the Bharatiya Janata Party’s Hardeep Singh Puri said that “those who are manufacturing a parallel narrative with regard to the last rites of Sdr Dr Manmohan Singh Ji are doing a huge disservice to his memory and the ethos he embodied as a human being”. “With his body draped in the Tricolour, the late former Prime Minister was accorded full state & military honours, state funeral and a befitting 21-gun salute. A seven-day national mourning has been declared and flags will fly at half mast. Members of the Sikh Sangat were present in full force during the rituals. Dr Manmohan Singh Ji will forever remain an inspirational leader for us. We will cherish his memories and values. Those members of the Congress party who are vitiating the poise and dignity of the sombre moment with controversies and falsehoods should refrain and introspect,” Puri said. Union minister Jyotiraditya Scindia said the Congress should have respected the former PM when he was alive. “The shameful politics being done by the Congress party and its leaders over the sad demise of the respected former Prime Minister of the country, Dr Manmohan Singh, is extremely unfortunate and condemnable. The whole country knows very well that the Congress never respected Manmohan Singh ji while he was alive. The Congress party has always insulted great personalities like Baba Saheb Ambedkar, Sardar Patel, former Prime Minister Shri PV Narasimha Rao, President Pranab Mukherjee and the revered Atal Bihari Vajpayee,” Scindia said. The Congress criticised the central government on Saturday for what it described as a “shocking display of disrespect and mismanagement” at the funeral. The party highlighted the “poorly organised” and “cramped” conditions at the funeral site, which, it said, left many participants with no space in the procession. “The great son of Mother India and the first Prime Minister of the Sikh community, Dr Manmohan Singh ji has been totally insulted by the present government by performing his last rites today at the Nigambodh Ghat,” Congress MP Rahul Gandhi wrote on X (formerly Twitter), emphasising the party’s demand for the highest respect to the former PM and a memorial. “The government should have shown respect to this great son of the country and his proud community,” Gandhi said. Union minister Ashwini Vaishnaw lashed out at the Congress on Saturday and said in a series of tweets that “Dr Manmohan Singh Ji was reduced to a proxy PM. Real power was wielded by Mrs Gandhi through the National Advisory Council, undermining our constitution. The ultimate insult came in 2013, when Rahul Gandhi publicly tore up an ordinance approved by the Cabinet chaired by Dr Singh as Prime Minister of India. Height of hypocrisy indeed. Congress failed to honour former President Pranab Mukherjee Ji after his death. Congress even downplayed his Bharat Ratna. Congress’s hypocrisy stands exposed as they politicise Dr Manmohan Singh Ji’s last journey. Congress repeatedly sidelined him during his tenure.” Meanwhile, BJP leader Amit Malviya on Sunday offered a point-by-point rebuttal to the charges made by Congress media department head Pawan Khera. While Khera alleged that no news agencies except DD was allowed and the coverage focused on PM Narendra Modi and Union home minister Amit Shah, Malviya said that, “MoD has no role in coverage of functions. In the past as well, only DD has done the coverage. Restriction on entry is by security agencies. National functions are also covered by DD only.” Khera had said that only three chairs were kept in the front row for Singh’s family and Congress leaders had to insist on seats for his daughters and other family members. Malviya said the “number of seats in the front row was kept at a maximum, as per the available space. Five seats were earmarked for family members in the first row. These were occupied by Mrs Manmohan Singh and her three daughters. The balance 20 seats were for constitutional authorities who were to lay a wreath. These included the President of India, the King of Bhutan, the Vice President, the Prime Minister, Cabinet ministers, leaders of the Opposition and service chiefs, among others.” While the Congress alleged that the PM and ministers did not stand up when the national flag was handed to the widow of the late Prime Minister or during the gun salute, Malviya said the “state funeral was done with full military honours. There was no deviation in the process. The family was given inadequate space around the pyre due to soldiers occupying one side.” Meanwhile, BJP MP Anurag Thakur termed the controversy unfortunate, saying: “Dr Manmohan Singh belonged to an ordinary family, and he became RBI governor and the chief economic adviser because of his hard work. He also served as the finance minister and the prime minister. I was an MP when he was the prime minister of the country. It is unfortunate that the Congress is doing politics over the death of Dr Manmohan Singh. Has the Nehru-Gandhi family stooped this low that they are doing politics over his death?”Nostalgic Revival: The "Assetto Corsa" Series Brand Event Kicks Off on Steam
The International Criminal Court (ICC) has issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, former Defence Minister Yoav Gallant, and Hamas military commander Mohammed Deif in connection with alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity. The warrants, announced on Thursday, come amid ongoing violence between Israel and Hamas that has resulted in widespread civilian casualties and destruction. The ICC alleged that Netanyahu and Gallant are responsible for war crimes in Gaza, specifically the deliberate deprivation of essential resources, including food, water, medicine, fuel, and electricity, from October 8, 2023, to May 20, 2024. These actions are said to have severely impacted Gaza’s civilian population during Israel’s military operations against Hamas. The ICC’s prosecutor, Karim Khan, has emphasized that these allegations represent violations of international law aimed at protecting civilians in conflict zones. “The actions committed by these individuals have led to significant loss of life and suffering for thousands of civilians, which constitutes a grave violation of international humanitarian law,” Khan said in a statement. In a separate ruling, the court issued an arrest warrant for Mohammed Deif, a senior leader of Hamas, who is accused of war crimes and crimes against humanity, including murder, torture, and sexual violence during the attacks on Israel on October 7, 2023. Despite Israel’s claim that Deif was killed in an airstrike in southern Gaza in July, the ICC has stated that it cannot confirm his death and has proceeded with the warrant. The warrants stem from an application filed by the ICC prosecutor in May, which targeted several Israeli officials, including Netanyahu and Gallant, as well as prominent Hamas leaders such as Yahya Sinwar and Ismail Haniyeh. Both Sinwar and Haniyeh were reportedly killed during the conflict. The Israeli government has strongly rejected the ICC’s actions. Prime Minister Netanyahu called the arrest warrants a “disgrace” and described them as an unjust attack on Israel’s military and people. “We will continue to defend our citizens and protect our country without compromise,” Netanyahu stated. Former Israeli Defence Minister Avigdor Lieberman also voiced strong opposition to the ICC’s decision, emphasizing that Israel would not apologise for its military actions aimed at combating terrorism. “Israel is committed to defending its citizens and will not compromise on the fight against terrorism,” Lieberman wrote on social media. Meanwhile, opposition leader Yair Lapid condemned the ICC ruling, framing Israel’s military operations as necessary for survival in the face of threats from “terrorist organizations.” Lapid stated. Trump asks Supreme Court to delay TikTok ban so he can weigh in after he takes office President-elect Donald Trump has asked the Supreme Court to pause the potential TikTok ban from going into effect until his administration can pursue a “political resolution” to the issue. Trump's request Friday came as TikTok and the Biden administration filed opposing briefs to the court. Oral arguments are scheduled for Jan. 10 on whether the law, which requires TikTok to divest from its China-based parent company or face a ban, unlawfully restricts speech in violation of the First Amendment. The brief said Trump opposes banning TikTok at this junction and “seeks the ability to resolve the issues at hand through political means once he takes office.” Stock market today: Wall Street slips as the 'Magnificent 7' weighs down the market NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks are closing lower as Wall Street ends a holiday-shortened week on a down note. Janet Yellen tells Congress US could hit debt limit in mid-January WASHINGTON (AP) — Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen says her agency will need to start taking “extraordinary measures,” or special accounting maneuvers intended to prevent the nation from hitting the debt ceiling, as early as January 14th, in a letter sent to congressional leaders Friday afternoon. The department has taken such action in the past. But once those measures run out the government risks defaulting on its debt unless lawmakers and the president agree to lift the limit on the U.S. government’s ability to borrow. An online debate over foreign workers in tech shows tensions in Trump's political coalition WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) — An online spat between factions of Donald Trump’s supporters over immigration and the tech industry has thrown internal divisions in the president-elect’s political movement into public display. The argument previews fissures and contradictory views his coalition could bring to the White House. The rift laid bare tensions between the newest flank of Trump’s movement — that is, wealthy members of the tech world who want more highly skilled workers in their industry — and people in Trump’s Make America Great Again base who championed his hardline immigration policies. A 9th telecoms firm has been hit by a massive Chinese espionage campaign, the White House says WASHINGTON (AP) — A top White House official says a ninth U.S. telecoms firm has been confirmed to have been hacked as part of a sprawling Chinese espionage campaign that gave officials in Beijing access to private texts and phone conversations of an unknown number of Americans. Administration officials said this month that at least eight telecommunications companies, as well as dozens of nations, had been affected by the Chinese hacking blitz known as Salt Typhoon. But Anne Neuberger, a deputy national security adviser, said Friday that a ninth victim had been identified after the administration released guidance to companies about how to hunt for Chinese culprits in their networks. Most Americans blame insurance profits and denials alongside the killer in UHC CEO death, poll finds WASHINGTON (AP) — Most Americans believe health insurance profits and coverage denials share responsibility for the killing of UnitedHealthcare’s CEO — although not as much as the person who pulled the trigger. So says a new poll from NORC at the University of Chicago. It finds that about 8 in 10 Americans say that the person who committed the killing has “a great deal” or “a moderate amount” of responsibility for the Dec. 4 shooting of Brian Thompson. Still, some see suspect Luigi Mangione as a heroic figure. About 7 in 10 adults say coverage denials or health insurance profits also bear at least “a moderate amount” of responsibility for Thompson’s death. Another jackpot surpasses $1 billion. Is this the new normal? Remember this moment because it probably won’t last: A U.S. lottery jackpot is projected to soar above $1 billion, and that's still a big deal. Friday’s Mega Millions drawing is worth an estimated $1.15 billion. The prize has evoked headlines across the country, despite the nation's top 10 jackpots already having boasted billion-dollar payouts. Jonathan Cohen is the author of the book “For a Dollar and a Dream: State Lotteries in Modern America.” He says he expects jackpots to continue to grow in size.
