Virginia’s comprehensive approach to tackling the challenge of the deadly drug fentanyl has resulted in a 23% decline in fentanyl overdose deaths, Gov. Glenn Youngkin said Tuesday. That’s a sharper drop than the national average of 14.5%, he said. But, he added, “it’s nowhere near good enough.” Youngkin Margo Wagner Virginia will continue to push a multipronged approach to the epidemic of fentanyl abuse and death, Youngkin said. “That starts with interdicting and arresting the drug trade itself. Our most recent operation, which ran for 47 days, saw us seize over 550 pounds of fentanyl — that’s enough to kill every Virginian eight times over. And we have to continue this,” he said. One form of help came with legislation this year sponsored by state Sen. Mark Obenshain, R-Harrisonburg, that makes it a crime punishable by up to five years in prison to possess or sell a device to make pills out of illegal drugs, except for manufacturers with permits. “It’s incredibly important for us to hold the distribution and the manufacturing of these of drugs laced with fentanyl accountable,” Youngkin said, adding: “I am not happy that we have not been able to pass a full charge of felony homicide for someone who, in fact, manufactures and distributes fentanyl that results in a death, and we will go back again” in the 2025 General Assembly session. Murder charge for overdose bill to come before Virginia lawmakers again State Sen. Ryan McDougle, R-Hanover, has filed Senate Bill 746 , under which selling hard drugs that turn out to be a fatal dose would be considered felony homicide — basically, accidentally causing death while engaged in a crime. The legislation has been a priority for Youngkin, who was visibly infuriated with a committee that rejected the idea in 2023. Youngkin highlighted the measure as a priority in his State of the Commonwealth speeches in 2023 and 2024. A statewide education push, led by first lady Suzanne Youngkin’s “It only takes one” campaign, highlights the point that one pill can kill a person — and that sometimes, one person’s attention and care, perhaps a parent, a teacher or coach, can keep another from resorting to a potentially deadly pill. “And then finally, we have had a massive push to equip people with both the skills and the supplies to revive someone who is suffering from an overdose, and the Naloxone supply has been comprehensive, but we need to continue to do this,” Youngkin said. He said he believes President-elect Donald Trump’s border security policies will be a big help going forward.

Thanksgiving is usually a very meat-oriented holiday with the turkey taking pride of place at the dinner table, but when entertaining vegetarian or vegan guests, or if you just want to explore meat alternative options for the day, then there are still plenty of options to choose from. While ingredients like seitan, tofu and even paneer are often used as stand-ins for meat, sometimes the best way to celebrate a vegetarian meal is to really lean into the nuances of the vegetables themselves. With these 8 dishes, you can enjoy warming, comforting meals that champion winter flavours in all their glory. Stuffed Peppers Red peppers are an underrated ingredient in so many ways. With a natural sweetness, they lend a unique depth to any dish and this dish, brimming with lentils and quinoa, bound together with a harissa-based sauce is quite a feast. Feel free to substitute the peppers with tomatoes, or use hollowed-out pumpkin for a more autumnal feel. You could alternatively fill them with bread or wild rice stuffing for a two-in-one dish. SquashduckensThe concept of a Turducken can feel like a gory prospect, even for meat eaters, this vegan alternative is a much more approachable and easy recipe and does exactly the same thing. It’s labour-intensive as each squash needs to be hollowed out and stuffed into each other and glazed with a flavour of your choice, but the result is a dense feast even the turkey eaters at the table will be eyeing. Mushroom Wellington The classic beef Wellington is a technical masterpiece involving a tenderloin topped with foie gras or mushroom duxelles, then wrapped in puff pastry and baked. This vegetarian iteration is less complex yet equally impressive. Seared portobello mushrooms are layered with apple cider-caramelised onions and sauteed mushrooms, seasoned with soy sauce for depth and enhanced with walnuts for texture. The rich mushroom filling is vegan, and the entire dish can easily be made vegan by substituting vegan puff pastry, butter alternatives in the port reduction and caramelised onions, and an egg substitute for brushing the pastry. Onion Macaroni and Cheese Comfort meets elegance in this disThis extraordinarily delicious macaroni cheese combines two classic comfort foods into a single dish. Caramelising onions can be time-consuming, but here, the process is expedited using high heat and a touch of water to prevent scorching. The sauce combines rich cheese, reminiscent of French onion soup, ensuring a melty, smooth consistency. Instead of sprinkling breadcrumbs, the dish is adorned with crusty French bread topped with more cheese that becomes delightfully melty and crisp after a few minutes under the grill. Vegetarian Lasagna Lasagna is all about building flavour and in this version, a veggie Bolognese made with eggplant or pumpkin is where you can impart a ton of flavour. The remainder comes together seamlessly: blend a parsleyed ricotta filling, boil your pasta sheets, assemble your lasagne and bake until bubbling and browned. Rich, creamy and immensely satisfying, this lasagne happens to be vegetarian, but your guests will scarcely notice the difference. Onion Galette This rich, autumnal galette draws inspiration from French onion soup flavours. Seasoned with French cheese and abundant cracked black pepper, the galette pastry replaces the crostini, whilst the caramelised onion filling is enriched with stock and sherry. Ideal for entertaining — it can be prepared in advance — but requires patience: the pastry needs to rest for at least four hours, allowing the flour to hydrate and ensuring a less crumbly texture. Greens Pot Pie This one-pan, vegetarian pot pie replaces the traditional chicken filling with creamy, garlicky greens. You can transform hearty winter greens into a silky filling with cream, garlic, shallots, thyme and grated cheese, topped with a layer of flaky puff pastry. It’s also a great way to pay homage to India’s wealth of winter greens like mustard and bathua for a more localised touch. Wild Mushroom Casserole This hearty combination of wild rice, creamy black eyes peas and aromatic vegetables (spinach, leeks, fennel and mushrooms) provides a satisfying vegetarian main course or substantial side dish for Thanksgiving and beyond. For an extravagant touch, you can incorporate a mix of whatever wild mushrooms you can get your hands like Shiitake or oyster mushrooms, although button mushrooms work just as well.
