Stocks closed higher on Wall Street, giving the market its fifth gain in a row and notching another record high for the Dow Jones Industrial Average. The S&P 500 rose 0.3% Friday. The Dow added 1%, and the Nasdaq composite tacked on 0.2%. Retailers had some of the biggest gains. Gap soared after reporting quarterly results that easily beat analysts’ estimates. EchoStar fell after DirecTV called off its purchase of that company’s Dish Network unit. European markets closed mostly higher and Asian markets ended mixed. Treasury yields held relatively steady in the bond market. Crude oil prices gained ground. THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. AP’s earlier story follows below. Stocks rose on Wall Street in afternoon trading Friday, keeping the market on track for its fifth straight gain. The S&P 500 was up 0.2% and was solidly on track for a weekly gain that will erase most of last week's loss. The Dow Jones Industrial Average climbed 333 points, or 0.8%, and the Nasdaq composite was essentially flat with a gain of less than 0.1% as of 3:07 p.m. Eastern. Markets have been volatile over the last few weeks, losing ground in the runup to elections in November, then surging following Donald Trump's victory, before falling again. The S&P 500 has been steadily rising throughout this week to within close range of its record. “Overall, market behavior has normalized following an intense few weeks,” said Mark Hackett, chief of investment research at Nationwide, in a statement. Several retailers jumped after giving Wall Street encouraging financial updates. Gap soared 10.8% after handily beating analysts' third-quarter earnings and revenue expectations, while raising its own revenue forecast for the year. Discount retailer Ross Stores rose 1.5% after raising its earnings forecast for the year. EchoStar fell 2.4% after DirecTV called off its purchase of that company's Dish Network unit. Smaller company stocks had some of the biggest gains. The Russell 2000 index rose 1.8%. A majority of stocks in the S&P 500 were gaining ground, but those gains were kept in check by slumps for several big technology companies. Nvidia fell 3.3%. Its pricey valuation makes it among the heaviest influences on whether the broader market gains or loses ground. The company has grown into a nearly $3.6 trillion behemoth because of demand for its chips used in artificial-intelligence technology. Intuit, which makes TurboTax and other accounting software, fell 5.6%. It gave investors a quarterly earnings forecast that fell short of analysts’ expectations. Facebook owner Meta Platforms fell 0.8% following a decision by the Supreme Court to allow a multibillion-dollar class action investors’ lawsuit to proceed against the company. It stems from the privacy scandal involving the Cambridge Analytica political consulting firm. European markets closed mostly higher and Asian markets ended mixed. Crude oil prices rose. Treasury yields held relatively steady in the bond market. The yield on the 10-year Treasury fell to 4.41% from 4.42% late Thursday. In the crypto market, Bitcoin hovered around $99,000, according to CoinDesk. It has more than doubled this year and first surpassed the $99,000 level on Thursday. Retailers remained a big focus for investors this week amid close scrutiny on consumer spending habits headed into the holiday shopping season. Walmart, the nation's largest retailer, reported a quarter of strong sales and gave investors an encouraging financial forecast. Target, though, reported weaker earnings than analysts' expected and its forecast disappointed Wall Street. Consumer spending has fueled economic growth, despite a persistent squeeze from inflation and high borrowing costs. Inflation has been easing and the Federal Reserve has started trimming its benchmark interest rates. That is likely to help relieve pressure on consumers, but any major shift in spending could prompt the Fed to reassess its path ahead on interest rates. Also, any big reversals on the rate of inflation could curtail spending. Consumer sentiment remains strong, according to the University of Michigan's consumer sentiment index. It revised its latest figure for November to 71.8 from an initial reading of 73 earlier this month, though economists expected a slight increase. It's still up from 70.5 in October. The survey also showed that consumers' inflation expectations for the year ahead fell slightly to 2.6%, which is the lowest reading since December of 2020. Wall Street will get another update on how consumers feel when the business group The Conference Board releases its monthly consumer confidence survey on Tuesday. A key inflation update will come on Wednesday when the U.S. releases its October personal consumption expenditures index. The PCE is the Fed's preferred measure of inflation and this will be the last PCE reading prior to the central bank's meeting in December. Damian J. Troise And Alex Veiga, The Associated Press

Jacksonville Jaguars at Tennessee Titans Preview: The 2-10 Jacksonville Jaguars travel to Tennessee to take on the 3-9 Titans. Unfortunately for both teams, they are out of the playoff picture and only playing for pride. Sunday’s meeting is the first between the two teams this season, and the Jacksonville Jaguars will be without starting quarterback Trevor Lawrence for this game. Lawrence will be out for the rest of the season, and former Patriots quarterback Mac Jones will be under center. The Jaguars hope that Jones can help end their current five-game losing streak. The Titans are also coming off a loss. They were undone by the Commanders to the tune of 42-19. Moving them to 0-3 after a win this season. The Titans have struggled with ball security this season. They have a league-high 23 turnovers. Even though they are hosting the sliding Jaguars, they will have to protect the ball if they want to pick up their fourth win of the season. Thomas: “Etienne Jr. carried Tank Bigsby 13 to seven last week. There was a thought that Bigsby would eventually usurp Etienne as the leader in this backfield. That has yet to happen, and I don’t expect it to happen this season. In fact, Etienne has had double-digit carries in every game but three, which happened to be the three in which he was banged up. Even in the lopsided games against the Bills and Lions, he ran the ball at least 10 times. The Titans’ run defense isn’t bad, but they still give up 86 yards per game on the ground. Jones will keep the Jaguars in this one, allowing Etienne ample opportunities to cash this low line.” Jaguars at Titans Team Stats, Betting Trends: The Titans have failed to cover in their last five games at home The Jaguars have won four of their last five away games against teams with losing records Seven of the Jaguars’ last nine road trips to the Titans have gone over the Total The Jaguars are on a five-game losing streak Quarterback Matchup for Jaguars at Titans: Jaguars: Mac Jones – Jones will get the start in place of the injured Trevor Lawrence. The Florida Republican said Friday he has no intention of serving another term in the House now that he is no longer President-elect Donald Trump's nominee for attorney general. Gaetz withdrew as the nominee this week amid growing fallout from the allegations of sexual conduct against him. Gaetz denies the allegations. Gaetz didn't lay out his plans now that he's out of office, saying only, “I’m still going to be in the fight, but it’s going to be from a new perch." After Gaetz's withdrawal on Thursday, Trump named former Florida attorney general Pam Bondi to lead the Justice Department. Vance takes on a more visible transition role as he works to boost Trump's most controversial picks WASHINGTON (AP) — After several weeks working behind closed doors, Vice President-elect JD Vance returned to Capitol Hill this week in a new, more visible role. He's been helping Donald Trump’s most contentious Cabinet picks try to win confirmation in the Senate, where he has served for the last two years. Vance spent part of Wednesday at the Capitol with Rep. Matt Gaetz sitting in on meetings with Trump’s controversial choice for attorney general. On Thursday, Vance was back, this time accompanying Pete Hegseth. Vance is expected to accompany other nominees for meetings over the coming weeks as he tries to leverage the two years he has spent in the Senate to help push through Trump’s picks. Beyond evangelicals, Trump and his allies courted smaller faith groups, from the Amish to Chabad Donald Trump’s lock on the white evangelical vote is legendary, but he didn't focus exclusively on large religious voter blocs. He and his allies also wooed smaller religious groups, away from the mainstream. He posted a tribute to Coptic church members on social media and met with members of Assyrians for Trump — two smaller Christian communities with Middle Eastern roots. He visited the grave of the revered late leader of an Orthodox Jewish movement. His allies sought votes from the separatist Amish community. While Trump won decisively, the outreaches reflected aggressive campaigning in what was expected to be a tight race. NATO and Ukraine to hold emergency talks after Russia's attack with new hypersonic missile KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — NATO and Ukraine will hold emergency talks Tuesday after Russia attacked a central city with a hypersonic ballistic missile that escalated the nearly 33-month-old war. Ukraine's parliament canceled a session Friday over the security threat. In a stark warning to the West, President Vladimir Putin said in a nationally televised speech Thursday that the attack with the intermediate-range Oreshnik missile was retaliation for Kyiv’s use of U.S. and British longer-range missiles capable of striking deeper into Russian territory. Putin said Russia is launching production of the Oreshnik, saying it's so powerful that several of them fitted with conventional warheads could be as devastating as a strike with strategic — or nuclear — weapons. Texas education board approves optional Bible-infused curriculum for elementary schools AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Texas’ education board has voted to allow Bible-infused teachings in elementary schools. The approval Friday follows other Republican-led states that have pushed this year to give religion a larger presence in public classrooms. The curriculum adopted by the Texas State Board of Education is optional for schools to adopt, but they’ll receive additional funding if they do so. Parents and teachers who opposed the curriculum say the lessons will alienate students of other faith backgrounds. Supporters argue the Bible is a core feature of American history and that teaching it will enrich learning. 2 convicted in human smuggling case after Indian family froze to death on US-Canada border FERGUS FALLS, Minn. (AP) — A jury has convicted two men of charges related to human smuggling for their roles in an international operation that led to the deaths of a family of Indian migrants who froze while trying to cross the Canada-U.S. border during a 2022 blizzard. Harshkumar Ramanlal Patel and Steve Shand each faced four charges related to human smuggling before being convicted on Friday. Patel is an Indian national. Shand is an American from Florida. They were arrested after the family froze while trying to cross the desolate border during a 2022 blizzard. Northern California gets record rain and heavy snow. Many have been in the dark for days in Seattle FORESTVILLE, Calif. (AP) — A major storm with heavy snow and record rain that's moving through Northern California has toppled trees, closed roads and prompted evacuations in some areas after knocking out power to hundreds of thousands of people in Washington and Oregon. Forecasters warn that the risk of flash flooding and rockslides will continue through Friday. The National Weather Service has extended a flood watch for areas north of San Francisco as a plume of moisture known as an atmospheric river inundates Northern California and the Pacific Northwest. Up to 16 inches of rain is forecast in Northern California and southwestern Oregon. The storm system unleashed winds earlier this week that left two people dead and hundreds of thousands without power in Washington. Archaeologists discover 4,000-year-old canals used to fish by predecessors of ancient Maya WASHINGTON (AP) — Using drones and Google Earth imagery, archaeologists have discovered a 4,000-year-old network of earthen canals in what’s now Belize. The research published Friday in Science Advances shows that long before the ancient Maya built temples, their predecessors were already altering the landscape of Central America’s Yucatan peninsula. The ancient fish canals were used to channel and catch freshwater species such as catfish. These structures were used for around 1,000 years — including during the “formative” period when the Maya began to settle in permanent farming villages and a distinctive culture started to emerge. California case is the first confirmed bird flu infection in a US child Health officials are confirming bird flu in a California child — the first reported case in a U.S. minor. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced confirmatory test results on Friday. Officials say the child had mild symptoms, was treated with antiviral medication and is recovering. The child’s infection brings the reported number of U.S. bird flu cases this year to 55, including 29 in California. State officials have said the child lives in Alameda County, which includes Oakland, and attends day care, but released no other details. Giants release quarterback Daniel Jones just days after benching him EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — The Daniel Jones era in New York is over. The Giants quarterback was granted his release by the team just days after the franchise said it was benching him in favor of third-stringer Tommy DeVito. New York president John Mara said Jones approached the team about releasing him and the club obliged. Mara added he was “disappointed” at the quick dissolution of a once-promising relationship between Jones and the team. Giants coach Brian Daboll benched Jones in favor of DeVito following a loss to the Panthers in Germany that dropped New York's record to 2-8.

ATLANTA — The cycle of mediocrity had a chance to add something of meaning Saturday at State Farm Arena. Instead, no three-game winning streak for the Miami Heat, just a 120-110 loss to the Atlanta Hawks at Philips Arena and a 15-14 record going into Sunday night’s game against the Houston Rockets to conclude this three-game trip. After victories over the Brooklyn Nets and Orlando Magic earlier in the week, the Heat could not continue the success in the enduring absence of Jimmy Butler, even with the Hawks even more shorthanded. Unlike Thursday in Orlando, when the Heat overcame trailing almost the entire way, this time there was no breakthrough, even with guard Tyler Herro going for 28 points, 10 assists and seven rebounds and center Bam Adebayo with a 17-point, 10-rebound double-double. The Hawks got 28 points from forward Jalen Johnson, 26 from forward De’Andre Hunter and 15 assists from guard Trae Young. Five Degrees of Heat from Saturday’s game: — 1. Closing time: The Hawks led 35-28 at the end of the first period, 61-58 at halftime and 93-84 going into the fourth quarter. From there, a 29-foot 3-pointer by Herro pulled the Heat within 106-105 with 4:07 to play. It again was a one-point game with 3:28 to play after an Adebayo jumper. After two potential Heat go-ahead shots were off, the Hawks moved to a 110-107 lead with 2:39 to play on a pair of Hunter free throws. From there, the Heat misses continued, with Hawks running clock and moving to a 117-107 lead with 68 seconds left, effectively ending it. — 2. Waiting game: With Butler reportedly ramping up his workouts back in Miami, the Heat opened for the third consecutive game with Jaime Jaquez Jr. in his place. It was the fourth consecutive absence for Butler and his ninth of the season, with the Heat entering 4-4 in his absence. Butler already has been ruled out for Sunday night’s game against the Houston Rockets that closes out this three-game trip. The reasoning for Butler’s absence on the NBA’s injury report again on Saturday was, “return to competition reconditioning.” The expectation, amid a fluid situation that has included ample trade speculation, is that Butler will rejoin the Heat for the team’s next practice, which is scheduled for Tuesday at Kaseya Center, ahead of back-to-back home games the following two nights against the New Orleans Pelicans and Indiana Pacers. Asked pregame of perhaps growing accustomed to playing in Butler’s absence, Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said, “Either way, we’ve proven that we can win regardless. It doesn’t matter.” — 3. More breaks: Even in Butler’s absence, the Heat again found themselves against an opponent at an even greater personnel deficit. Following up on the Heat’s two games in Orlando, when the Magic were without Paolo Banchero and Frank Wagner, among others, the Heat this time got the Hawks in Atlanta’s absences of Dyson Daniels, Bogdan Bogdanovic and Onyeka Okongwu. Three Heat players whose status was unsure going into the day all were available: Terry Rozier (knee), Nikola Jovic (ankle) and Pelle Larsson (ankle). That left Butler, Josh Richardson (heel) and Dru Smith (Friday’s season-ending Achilles surgery) as the only players not available to Spoelstra. — 4. All-Star competition?: Among those who figure to vie for one of the final Eastern Conference All-Star berths are Herro and Johnson. Johnson continually took it to the Heat in the paint, while Herro again made statements with the long ball. Johnson entered as one of just four players averaging at least 19 points, 10 rebounds, and five assists, along with Nikola Jokic, Domantas Sabonis and Giannis Antetokounmpo. For his part, Herro extended his career best streak of games with at least one 3-pointer to 63, six games off Duncan Robinson’s franchise record. Herro has now converted a 3-pointer in the season’s first 29 games, on Saturday breaking the longest such Heat 3-pointer streak to open a season, set in 1998-99 by Tim Hardaway. — 5. Going big: With first-round pick Kel’el Ware now seemingly entrenched in the Heat rotation, Spoelstra went big with the Heat’s first substitution, with Ware and Jovic entering together at that point. Another element of a revised rotation continued, with Alec Burks also among the Heat’s early substitutions. With Rozier and Larsson also part of the mix, it had Spoelstra going 10 deep by the early stages of the second period, perhaps in light of another game to follow Sunday in Houston. Ware again was largely nondescript in his 10 minutes, closing with four points and one rebound. ©2024 South Florida Sun-Sentinel. Visit sun-sentinel.com . Distributed by Tribune Content Agency, LLC.IRVINE, Calif., Nov. 26, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- MUSE Microscopy, Inc., a innovator in digital pathology announced it's in their final phase. After a strategic acquisition by the current leadership team in 2021, MUSE has steadfastly pursued a visionary roadmap that has the potential to reshape the future of digital pathology. Today, that journey reaches an exciting moment with SmartPath MUSE TechnologyTM (SmartPath)-the industry's first tissue-to-digitalTM imager using MUSE (Microscopy with Ultraviolet Surface Excitation) technology, intended to create a solution that eliminates the need for traditional slide-based histology, a fundamental process that has remained unchanged for over a century. SmartPath's objective of this advanced imager is to provide new technology that rapidly captures high-resolution ultraviolet images, directly from whole fresh or formalin-fixed (non-FFPE) tissue, and convert these UV images to detailed H&E-like digital images for pathologist's review. Utilization of non-caustic fluorescent dyes on fresh tissue significantly improves RNA retained in the sample for downstream processing. This first of its kind imager implements a simple workflow, with the goal of bringing unprecedented efficiency to aid pathologists in diagnostic pathology labs worldwide. By eliminating cumbersome manual processes, SmartPath has the potential to propel pathology into the digital age and support a wide range of global IVD applications and market segments. Matthew Nuñez, CEO of MUSE Microscopy, Inc., expressed the company's enthusiasm about this landmark achievement: "We are immensely proud of the advancements we've made with SmartPath-a groundbreaking tissue-to-digital imager that redefines where true digital pathology starts. This moment signifies more than just a new product; it represents the potential for a fundamental transformation for the entire field of pathology, empowering professionals to move past legacy processes that have constrained advancements in workflow and diagnostics for far too long. With SmartPath, we are intent on setting a new standard and opening doors to the next generation of aids in pathology.” Transforming a Long-Standing Pathology Workflow The SmartPath Imager tackles one of pathology's most persistent challenges: the dependence on traditional glass slide histology. By leveraging rapid tissue-to-digital imaging technology, SmartPath seeks to transform pathology, from analog slide-based processes to a seamless and effective workflow that provides high-resolution digital tissue images to pathologists, without destructive direct-to-digital sample preparation. House approves $895B defense bill with military pay raise, ban on transgender care for minorsSAO PAULO (AP) — Brazil’s former far-right President Jair Bolsonaro was fully aware of and actively participated in a coup plot to remain in office after his defeat in the 2022 election , according to a Federal Police report unsealed Tuesday. Federal Police last Thursday formally accused Bolsonaro and 36 other people of attempting a coup. They sent their 884-page report to the Supreme Court, which lifted the seal. The unsealed document provides a first glimpse of several testimonies that describe the former president as one of the key leaders of the plot, and not a mere observer. “The evidence collected throughout the investigation shows unequivocally that then-President Jair Messias Bolsonaro planned, acted and was directly and effectively aware of the actions of the criminal organization aiming to launch a coup d’etat and eliminate the democratic rule of law, which did not take place due to reasons unrelated to his desire,” the document said. At another point, it says: “Bolsonaro had full awareness and active participation.” Bolsonaro, who had repeatedly alleged without evidence that the country's electronic voting system was prone to fraud, called a meeting in December 2022, during which he presented a draft decree to the commanders of the three divisions of the armed forces, according to the police report, signed by four investigators. The decree would have launched an investigation into suspicions of fraud and crimes related to the October 2022 vote, and suspended the powers of the nation's electoral court. The navy’s commander stood ready to comply, but those from the army and air force objected to any plan that prevented Lula’s inauguration, the report said. Those refusals are why the plan did not go ahead, according to witnesses who spoke to investigators. Bolsonaro never signed the decree to set the final stage of the alleged plan into action. Bolsonaro has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing or awareness of any plot to keep him in power or oust his leftist rival and successor, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. “No one is going to do a coup with a reserve general and half a dozen other officers. What is being said is absurd. For my part, there has never been any discussion of a coup,” Bolsonaro told journalists in Brazil’s capital Brasilia on Monday. “If someone came to discuss a coup with me, I’d say, that’s fine, but the day after, how does the world view us?” he added. “The word ‘coup’ has never been in my dictionary.” The top court has passed the report on to Prosecutor-General Paulo Gonet. He will decide whether to formally charge Bolsonaro and put him on trial, or toss the investigation. The former president was formally accused of three crimes: violent elimination of the rule of law, staging a coup d'etat and forming a criminal organization. Rodrigo Rios, a law professor at the PUC university in the city of Curitiba, said Bolsonaro could face up to a minimum of 11 years in prison if convicted on all charges. “A woman involved in the Jan. 8 attack on the Supreme Court received a 17-year prison sentence,” Rios told The Associated Press, noting that the former president is more likely to receive 15 years or more if convicted. “Bolsonaro’s future looks dark.” Ahead of the 2022 election, Bolsonaro repeatedly alleged that the election system, which does not use paper ballots, could be tampered with. The top electoral court later ruled that he had abused his power to cast unfounded doubt on the voting system, and ruled him ineligible for office until 2030 . Still, he has maintained that he will stand as a candidate in the 2026 race. Since Bolsonaro left office, he has been targeted by several investigations, all of which he has chalked up to political persecution. Federal Police have accused him of smuggling diamond jewelry into Brazil without properly declaring them and directing a subordinate to falsify his and others’ COVID-19 vaccination statuses . Authorities are also investigating whether he incited the Jan. 8, 2022 riot in which his followers ransacked the Supreme Court and presidential palace in Brasilia, seeking to prompt intervention by the army that would oust Lula from power. Bolsonaro had left for the United States days before Lula’s inauguration on Jan. 1, 2023 and stayed there three months, keeping a low profile. The police report unsealed Tuesday alleges he was seeking to avoid possible imprisonment related to the coup plot, and also await the uprising that took place a week later. Declines have been even larger and more widespread among low-educated adults. The Survey measured the skills of around 160 000 16-65 year-olds across 31 countries*. Twenty-seven of these countries took part in the first Survey in 2013. It also looked at how literacy, numeracy and problem solving is used at work. It aims to provide evidence of how developing and using skills improves employment prospects and quality of life as well as boosting economic growth. But despite major efforts by governments and social partners to strengthen education and adult training systems over the past decade, only Finland and Denmark have seen significant improvements in adult literacy skills. On numeracy proficiency, eight countries saw their average scores improve, with Finland and Singapore recording the largest gains. But in most countries, the literacy proficiency of the lowest-performing 10% of the population has declined, with similar declines in numeracy. At the same time, the performance of the top 10% has improved, leading to widening skills inequalities within countries. In 2023, Singapore and the United States displayed the largest skills inequalities in literacy and numeracy. “Adults with higher numeracy skills are more likely to be employed, earn a higher wage, and report better health and life satisfaction than those with lower numeracy skills,” OECD Secretary-General Mathias Cormann said. “This Survey underscores the urgent need for a comprehensive re-evaluation of how countries support the development of foundation skills. As technology reshapes many jobs, these skills are more important than ever to face the future of work. By investing in skills, governments will support a more resilient and inclusive workforce that helps sustain prosperity for all.” Finland, Japan, the Netherlands, Norway and Sweden are the best-performing countries in all three domains. Eleven countries (Chile, Croatia, France, Hungary, Israel, Italy, Korea, Lithuania, Poland, Portugal and Spain) consistently perform below the OECD average in all skills domains. Behind the declines in average skill levels, inequalities within countries are widening. In many countries, the lowest-performing adults saw the biggest decline in literacy skills, and on average across participating countries one in five adults are only able to understand simple texts or solve basic arithmetic. Furthermore, in most countries adult skills continue to depend closely on social background. As literacy proficiency has declined more strongly among men than women, gender gaps have narrowed in many countries. On the other hand, men continue to outperform women in numeracy and adaptive problem solving. Meanwhile, foreign-born adults have lower skills than native-born adults in nearly all countries. In some places, the increase in the share of foreign-born adults over the past decade explains part of the declining average literacy proficiency scores. Source: OECD
