The case will be heard in a Washington court, as decided on Monday by the presiding judge. The FTC, which initiated the lawsuit in 2020 during the Trump administration, accuses Meta of illegal monopoly practices in the personal social networking space. It asserts that Meta overpaid for Instagram in 2012 and WhatsApp in 2014 as a strategy to neutralize potential threats rather than competing within the mobile ecosystem. Judge James Boasberg has set April 14 as the trial date. He dismissed Meta's argument that the case relies on a narrow perspective of social media markets, neglecting competition from platforms like TikTok, YouTube, X, and LinkedIn. Despite these points, the judge acknowledged the difficulties posed by time and technological advancements in shaping the FTC's market claims. (With inputs from agencies.)

The all-cash, take-private deal values each share of the Boston, Massachusetts-based company at $4.45, representing a premium of close to 40% to the stock’s last closing price. Bending Spoons, which owns services such as note-taking tool Evernote and photo editor Remini, has been pressing ahead with acquisitions throughout the year. The Italian app developer bought file-sharing platform WeTransfer and digital publishing platform Issuu in July. Bending Spoons is also seen as a potential candidate for a public listing, owing to its multiple buyouts, Reuters reported last month. Brightcove, which allows media companies and enterprises to monetize content through streaming, said the deal would enable it to leverage the technology and market expertise of Bending Spoons. The transaction is expected to close in the first half of 2025. One thing nearly all former presidents have in common is a love of sports. For Donald Trump, the game was golf. For Barack Obama, the sport was basketball. President George W. Bush owned Major League Baseball’s Texas Rangers. For Jimmy Carter, the sport was tennis. At the Jimmy Carter National Historical Park is a clay tennis court. The tennis court was installed during Carter’s childhood on the family farm. The farm and his childhood home later became the location for the park in Plains, Georgia. In his 1975 book “Why Not the Best?” Carter described how he would play against his father as a teenager. “My father ... was an excellent tennis player,” Carter wrote. “I could never beat my father. He had a wicked sliced ball which barely bounded at all on the relatively soft dirt court.” RELATED STORY | Former President Jimmy Carter dies at age 100 Carter was able to upgrade his court when he entered the White House in 1977. The complex had a court installed during President Theodore Roosevelt’s tenure. But during his time in the White House, the use of the tennis courts became political fodder. Staffer James Fallows wrote in The Atlantic that Carter would personally sign off on when the White House tennis court could be used, and by which staffers. “The in-house tennis enthusiasts, of whom I was perhaps the most shameless, dispatched brief notes through his secretary asking to use the court on Tuesday afternoons while he was at a congressional briefing, or a Saturday morning, while he was away,” Fallows wrote. “I always provided spaces where he could check Yes or No; Carter would make his decision and send the note back, initialed J.” Carter was asked by Bill Moyers about whether he personally signed off on the tennis court’s use. Carter told Moyers he delegated the task to a secretary. Carter’s love of tennis came home to Plains in 1977 during his first year in the White House. World Team Tennis staged a match in the small Georgia town, which was attended by Carter’s mother Lillian. The competition was between a team of Soviet Union stars against top Americans playing on the Phoenix Racquets.Top 10 Best Water Conservation Companies in India 2025 | Leaders in Sustainability

The Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) has proposed diversifying the ownership structure of clearing corporations (CCs), which are currently wholly owned by stock exchanges. The regulator has suggested changes to ensure fair ownership distribution while minimizing disruption to the capital markets. Under existing rules, CCs are not allowed to list publicly, unlike their parent stock exchanges. However, since CCs are wholly owned by stock exchanges, they are indirectly subjected to market pressures. Recognizing this issue, Sebi has outlined several approaches in a consultation paper to address ownership structures in a way that ensures fairness for all stakeholders. One proposal involves distributing 49 percent of the CCs' shareholding to the shareholders of the parent stock exchange on a proportional basis. The remaining 51 percent would initially stay with the parent exchange. Over the next five years, the parent exchange would reduce its holding to 15 percent or lower by selling shares to other exchanges. This approach would ensure that CCs remain majority-owned by exchanges in line with Sebi’s Stock Exchange and Clearing Corporation (SECC) norms. An alternative proposal recommends transferring the entire shareholding of a CC to the existing shareholders of the parent exchange. These shareholders would then have the freedom to trade their shares in the CC independently. This method would completely separate the CC from its parent exchange, creating an independent entity while ensuring fairness for the shareholders of the parent exchange. Sebi has emphasized that CCs will remain prohibited from public listing, regardless of the ownership restructuring approach adopted. According to Jyoti Prakash Gadia, Managing Director of Resurgent India, these proposals reflect the need for CCs to operate independently and free from any conflict of interest or bias toward their parent stock exchanges. He noted that as capital markets expand rapidly, it is essential for CCs to function without undue influence and ensure a level playing field. In addition to ownership diversification, Sebi has proposed that CCs operate as profit-making public utilities. This would require reinvesting profits into technology, infrastructure, and risk management systems to enhance efficiency and stability. Furthermore, CCs should maintain reasonable fee structures to avoid imposing additional costs on investors. Sebi has also suggested encouraging the creation of multi-asset CCs while maintaining a system of multiple clearing corporations. This diversification is aimed at reducing dependency on a single CC and improving systemic resilience. To gather industry feedback, Sebi has invited public comments on the proposed reforms, with a deadline of December 13. These measures reflect Sebi’s efforts to enhance the independence, efficiency, and resilience of clearing corporations, which play a critical role in the stability of India’s capital markets. He highlighted that this cultural power not only enhances India’s global standing but also helps preserve its cultural heritage with dignity, offering the nation a renewed identity. In this context, the Minister stressed the importance of adopting a scientific approach to heritage conservation, ensuring minimal disruption to citizens’ daily lives. He was delivering the inaugural address at the 14 th Foundation Day function of the National Monuments Authority (NMA), a statutory body under the Ministry of Culture, at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi. Shri Gajendra Singh Shekhawat remarked that the 200 years leading up to 2014 were marked by a systematic effort to undermine the rich heritage of India. He pointed out that during this period, efforts were made to convince Indians that their art, culture, architecture, science, and knowledge were inferior to Western traditions. The Minister stated, “Over the last 10 years, under the leadership of our Prime Minister, both the development of the nation and the preservation of our heritage have been prioritized. This has led to a global recognition and respect for India’s cultural heritage”. He further emphasized that the renewed focus of the government on heritage conservation, alongside the enhancement of the nation’s prestige, has positively shifted public perception towards the importance of preserving India’s rich cultural legacy. The Union Minister was joined by the Professor Kishor K. Basa, Chairman of the National Monuments Authority, along with other NMA members, senior officials from the Ministry of Culture, the Archaeological Survey of India, and other dignitaries at the inaugural session of the function. During the event, the Minister also released the Annual Report 2023-24 of the NMA, which provides a comprehensive overview of the Authority’s mandated activities for the year. This marked the first such publication by the NMA. The report highlights that, to date, the NMA has laid 55 Heritage Bye-Laws (HBLs) covering 98 Centrally Protected Monuments in Parliament. An additional 53 HBLs covering 57 more Centrally Protected Monuments have also been approved. Furthermore, the NMA has been a leader in harnessing Information Technology to streamline the process of issuing permissions for construction activities in prohibited or regulated areas around Centrally Protected Monuments. This is part of the Central Government’s “Ease of Doing Business” initiative. One of the significant advancements in this area is the implementation of the NMA Online Application Processing System (NOAPS) portal. The portal integrates cutting-edge technology from ISRO through its SMARAC mobile app, which utilizes color-coded zonal maps of Centrally Protected Monuments, facilitating efficient management and monitoring of construction activities. Shri Shekhawat acknowledged that the NMA has achieved significant milestones in its fourteen years of operation. He expressed confidence that the Authority would continue to build on these successes, further strengthening India’s heritage management system. The Minister emphasized that NMA’s efforts have laid a solid foundation, and with continued progress, it will play a pivotal role in preserving and promoting the nation’s cultural legacy for future generations. In the coming days and weeks, it remains to be seen how President Moon will navigate this crisis and whether he will be able to regain the trust of the people. This comes in response to a 2023 budget agreement orchestrated by former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy and President Joe Biden, which suspended the debt limit until January 1, 2025. Trump took to his social media platform, Truth Social, to express his disapproval, stressing that Congress's decision jeopardizes future fiscal stability and insisting that Democrats should be held accountable for any resulting financial turmoil. Trump said, 'The Democrats must be forced to take a vote on this treacherous issue NOW, during the Biden Administration, and not in June.' While the deal allows the U.S. Treasury to honor its financial commitments for several months, the pressing concern is that lawmakers will need to revisit this issue next year to prevent a fiscal crisis. Trump's remarks underscore the contentious political atmosphere surrounding budgetary and fiscal policy debates in Washington. (With inputs from agencies.)

TORONTO (AP) — The Utah Hockey Club said players were forced to walk to their game against the Maple Leafs after their bus got stuck in Toronto traffic Sunday night. The team posted a video on social media of team members walking to Scotiabank Arena, with player Maveric Lamoureux saying the bus was “not moving at all.” Several city streets had been closed during the day for the annual Santa Claus parade. The Maple Leafs earned their fourth consecutive win by defeating Utah 3-2. The viral incident prompted Ontario Premier Doug Ford to call the congestion “embarrassing” and “unacceptable,” highlighting his government’s plan to address the city’s gridlock through bike lane legislation. It wasn’t the first time a Toronto visitor had to ditch their vehicle to make it to an event on time.
