BAKU: The world’s most climate-imperiled nations stormed out of consultations in protest at the deadlocked UN COP29 conference Saturday, as simmering tensions over a hard-fought finance deal erupted into the open. Diplomats from small island nations threatened by rising seas and impoverished African states angrily filed out of a meeting with summit hosts Azerbaijan over a final deal being thrashed out in a Baku sports stadium. “We came here to this COP for a fair deal. We feel that we haven’t been heard,” said Cedric Schuster, the Samoan chairman of the Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS). An unpublished version of the final text circulating in Baku, and seen by AFP, proposes that rich nations raise to $300 billion a year by 2035 their commitment to poorer countries to fight climate change. It is up from $100 billion now provided by wealthy nations under a commitment set to expire. COP29 hosts Azerbaijan intended to put a final draft before 198 nations for adoption or rejection on Saturday evening, a full day after the marathon summit officially ended. Sierra Leone’s climate minister Jiwoh Abdulai, whose country is among the world’s poorest, said the draft was “effectively a suicide pact for the rest of the world”. In a statement, Schuster said AOSIS and the group of Least Developed Countries (LDCs) have found themselves “continuously insulted by the lack of inclusion” at COP29. Schuster said that without an inclusive process, “it becomes very difficult for us to continue our involvement here at COP29”. But negotiators from AOSIS, the LDCs and wealthy nations met later with the COP29 presidency. “We’re doing our utmost to build bridges with literally everyone,” EU climate commissioner Wopke Hoekstra said in a statement. “It is not easy,” he said. “There is no alternative to do whatever we can.” An earlier offer from rich nations of $250 billion was slammed as offensively low by developing countries, which have demanded much higher sums to build resilience against climate change and cut emissions. UK Energy Secretary Ed Miliband said the revised offer of $300 billion was “a significant scaling up” of the existing pledge by developed nations, which also count the United States, EU and Japan among their ranks. Harried diplomats ran to-and-fro in the stadium near the Caspian Sea searching for common ground. “Hopefully this is the storm before the calm,” said US climate envoy John Podesta in the corridors as somebody shouted “shame” in his direction. Panama’s negotiator, Juan Carlos Monterrey Gomez, said delegates could not go home without a deal and repeat the failure of COP15 in Copenhagen in 2009. “I’m sad, I’m tired, I’m disheartened, I’m hungry, I’m sleep-deprived, but there is a tiny ray of optimism within me because this cannot become a new Copenhagen,” he told reporters. Wealthy nations say it is politically unrealistic to expect more in direct government funding. Donald Trump, a sceptic of both climate change and foreign assistance, returns to the White House in January and a number of other Western countries have seen right-wing backlashes against the green agenda. The draft deal posits a larger overall target of $1.3 trillion per year to cope with rising temperatures and disasters, but most would come from private sources. Ali Mohamed, the Kenyan chair of the African Group of Negotiators, told AFP: “No deal is better than a bad deal.” South African environment minister Dion George, however, said: “I think being ambitious at this point is not going to be very useful.” “What we are not up for is going backwards or standing still,” he said. “We might as well just have stayed at home then.” A coalition of more than 300 activist groups accused historic polluters most responsible for climate change of skirting their obligation, and urged developing nations to stand firm. A group of developing countries had demanded at least $500 billion, with some saying that increases were less than met the eye due to inflation. Experts commissioned by the United Nations to assess the needs of developing countries said $250 billion was “too low” and by 2035 rich nations should be providing at least $390 billion. The US and EU have wanted newly wealthy emerging economies like China — the world’s largest emitter — to chip in. China, which remains classified as a developing nation under the UN framework, provides climate assistance but wants to keep doing so on its own voluntary terms. The EU and other countries have also tussled with Saudi Arabia over including strong language on moving away from fossil fuels, which negotiators say the oil-producing country has resisted. “We will not allow the most vulnerable, especially the small island states, to be ripped off by the new, few rich fossil fuel emitters,” said German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock. – AFPGoogle's top trending searches of 2024 including Luke Littler, Oasis and the Euros

NHS bosses ordered to prioritise emergency treatment for the sickest patients rather than worry about targetsBy Leslie Patton | Bloomberg Costco Wholesale Corp. is switching manufacturers for its popular Kirkland Signature brand of diapers as its supplier moves away from store brands to increase profitability. First Quality is replacing Kimberly-Clark Corp. as the maker of Costco’s diapers, with the official change set to happen in January, according to people familiar with the decision who weren’t authorized to speak publicly about the matter. More on Costco: Not a Costco member? Shoppers have tips to skip new entry scanners Consumer goods makers have been focused on restoring profit margins to pre-pandemic levels and scrutinizing their business models after years of higher costs. For Kimberly-Clark, which makes the Huggies brand of diapers, that means a shift away from low-margin private label contracts and a stronger focus on selling more higher-priced premium items under their own brand names. First Quality didn’t respond to requests for comment. Representatives for Costco and Kimberly-Clark declined to comment. Earlier this month, Kimberly-Clark Chief Financial Officer Nelson Urdaneta said that the company’s exit of private label businesses, “allows us to dedicate our capacity and our investments to our own technologies and brands to differentiate them.” In October, Chief Executive Officer Mike Hsu said that the company’s percentage of sales from private label will go from about 4% in 2023 to about 2% next year, and that it would decline further “over time.” Also read: Discount retailer Panda Mart leases former Sears in Orange First Quality, which also makes Cuties diapers along with paper towels and toilet paper, hasn’t disclosed the arrangement with Costco. In May, the New York-based company said it was increasing capacity for diapers and training pants by 50% at its Macon, Georgia, manufacturing factory. Costco’s Kirkland Signature diapers have become popular with parents, especially as years of inflation for basic goods crimps spending. The company has said in past years that private label items are a good value versus brand names, thanks to their price point. Costco says it expects to increase sales of Kirkland-branded items, which generally earn higher margins for the retailer versus national labels. Kirkland diapers made by Kimberly-Clark have a curved fit that many shoppers perceive to be more ergonomic for their babies, said Natalia Richer, director of business development at consultant Diaper Testing International. “It will be noticeable to the consumer if they change it,” she said. Kimberly-Clark also makes Kotex tampons and pads, along with Kleenex tissues and Scott toilet paper. Huggies recently introduced a new type of diaper and wipes, dubbed Skin Essentials, designed to protect against rashes. After an exhaustive six-month search that saw the names of Hedi Slimane from Celine, Jacquemus founder Simon Porte Jacquemus and former Louis Vuitton creative director Marc Jacobs tossed around the front row like empty goody bags, the house of Chanel has settled on 40-year-old Matthieu Blazy to run its fashion business. “I am thrilled and honoured to join the wonderful house of Chanel,” Blazy said in a statement. “I look forward to meeting all the teams and writing this new chapter together.” Blazy arrives at Chanel with the respect of the industry, having made the Italian label Bottega Veneta a flattering bright spot in the fashion conglomerate Kering’s portfolio, with sales rising by 4 per cent in the first nine months of 2024 to €1.23 billion ($2 billion). Mathhieu Blazy takes a bow in Milan following his ready-to-wear collection for Bottega Veneta in February. Credit: AP With his trompe l’oeil collections of elevated basics, such as T-shirts and jeans rendered in leather and hit Kalimero, Andiamo and Sardine-style handbags, Blazy has also gained a celebrity following that includes Kate Moss, Jacob Elordi, Greta Lee and Julianne Moore. Becoming only the fourth creative director of the house founded by Coco Chanel in 1910 is a major step up for the French-Belgian who has worked at Calvin Klein, Celine and Raf Simons. Chanel is more than 10 times the size of Bottega Veneta, with revenue in 2023 of $US19.7 billion ($30 billion). Blazy will oversee 10 collections a year spanning haute couture, ready-to-wear and resort shows. “I am convinced that he will be able to play with the codes and heritage of the house through an ongoing dialogue with the studio, our ateliers, and our maisons d’art,” said Bruno Pavlovsky, president of Chanel Fashion, in a statement. “His audacious personality, his innovative and powerful approach to creation, as well as his dedication to craftsmanship and beautiful materials, will take Chanel in exciting new directions.” It’s the audacity that Chanel bosses are focusing on, with Blazy’s predecessor, Virginie Viard, attracting negative press during her five-year tenure as creative director, which followed the death of Karl Lagerfeld in 2019 at the age of 85. Viard’s collections helped Chanel achieve record profits, but low-key runway shows, compared to Lagerfeld’s extravagant sets, and social media roasting of house ambassadors Margot Robbie and Margaret Qualley on the red carpet led to her exit. Blazy will join the brand next year, Chanel said in a statement on Thursday, without specifying when. He is expected to present his first Chanel collection in October. Controversial designer John Galliano this week announced his departure from Maison Margiela, prompting rumours of a return to Christian Dior, and Fendi is still looking to replace Kim Jones, who resigned as creative director in October. For the time being Blazy can sit comfortably, with Chanel having said the appointment is a long-term commitment. And Chanel knows how to commit, with Lagerfeld occupying the top job for 36 years.
