The push towards electrification and modernisation of electrical grids has been amongst the forefront of government initiatives post Covid-19. By manufacturing key components that go into electric vehicles (EVs), battery management systems (BMS), smart meters and switchgears, amidst others, Shivalik Bimetal Controls (SBCL) has been quietly making its presence felt with a 130 per cent return for its investors, in the last three years. Broadly operating under three revenue verticals – thermostatic bimetals, shunt resistors and electrical contacts – all critical components and consumables in above-mentioned sunrise sectors, SBCL’s revenue/ EBITDA/ PAT has grown at a strong CAGR of 21 per cent/ 24 per cent/ 28 per cent in the last five years. The company also has a net cash position as of H1 FY25. One of the very few vendors with the niche capability of manufacturing specialised shunts using electron beam welding (EBW) process, the company has no peers in India with similar comparable manufacturing prowess. The temporary slowdown from the US markets is expected to pick up pace from Q4 of FY25, based on positive enquiries from its largest customer. Nevertheless, the growth in other geographies has outshone the degrowth in the US in H1 FY25, indicating resilience in demand for its products. Trading at a TTM PE of around 41 times, the share price of the company has largely stayed flat in the last 12 months. And with the stock having corrected around 25 per cent from its peak in July 2023, investors could consider accumulating the stock on dips considering the above factors. SBCL, incorporated in 1984, set up the first plant in Asia to manufacture thermostatic bimetals in 1986. The company launched cathode ray tubes (CRT) in the 1990s, which found applications in CRT TVs. With the same being superseded by flat LCD, LED type TVs, this product became gradually obsolete since FY11 resulting in stagnation in revenue upto FY14. But with the launch of shunt resistors and renewed focus on thermostatic bimetals, SBCL revived its business, building capabilities in advanced and complex manufacturing technologies like EBW and diffusion bonding. Currently, shunts and bimetals contribute to around 45 per cent each to the topline, while electrical contacts bring in the rest. Thermostatic bimetals, used as part of overload protection devices, find application in switchgears, electrical appliances, medical devices and EVs. It helps the end-use machineries turn on or off when it gets too hot or too cold. The company manufactures around 75-plus grades in this space. Shunt resistors help measure and sense the flow of electricity in a circuit. These find critical applications in automobiles, smart meters, power modules and BMS. Currently, SBCL operates the world’s largest capacity and production of electronic beam welding, by which the company manufactures shunts. Shunts are relatively higher margin products and enjoy a 3-5 per cent delta over bimetals, EBITDA-wise. Electrical contacts are connecting points joined to copper wires, which are the contact points when we turn on and off switches, used across electrical appliances, smart meters, switchgears and wires, and accessories. This is lower on the margin profile when compared with the other two products. H1 FY25 saw revenue decline of 0.9 per cent year on year to ₹252.6 crore, despite a nominal volume growth of around 3 per cent. A similar trend was observed in FY24 as compared with FY23, where despite around 9 per cent volume growth, revenue growth came in at a lower 8 per cent. This trend is on the back of commodity prices – primarily, copper and nickel which account for around 50 per cent of total costs – softening from January 2023. Price of copper and nickel have corrected around 5 per cent and 48 per cent since January 2023. While copper prices have been volatile during this period, nickel has been largely on a downward slope. EBITDA margins too dropped year on year owing to fall in export volumes from around 60 per cent in H1 FY24 (and entire FY24) to 55 per cent in H1 FY25, an unfavourable product mix with volumes of shunt dropping as a percentage of the overall volumes, and electrical contacts coincidentally growing in volume. Recovery on this front is expected from rebound in shunts business and export volumes. Bimetals sales to Europe and the Rest of Asia de-grew 24 per cent and 31 per cent year on year in H1 FY25, while India and the US showed a bit of resilience but still dropped 3 per cent and 5 per cent year on year respectively, resulting in a net 11 per cent decline. India continues to be the biggest market for this segment. Shunt segment, however, saw Europe, India and the Rest of Asia grow around 40 per cent each year on year, while US de-grew 33 per cent, still reeling from inventory destocking. Despite the US traditionally being the largest market in this segment, growth in other markets helped the shunts business grow 3 per cent year on year in H1 of FY25. Smart meter as an end-use segment contributed to around 30 per cent of the shunt sales in H1 FY25, and automotive sector added another 60 per cent. In case of bimetals, switchgear segment contributed to around 80 per cent of the sales, while spiral coils, snap-action disks brought in the rest. The company incurred a capex of ₹75 crore over FY21-23. And with another ₹20-30 crore that will be spent over FY24-26 for brownfield expansion, the peak revenue potential, according to the management, is ₹1,600 crore, which is more than three times its FY24 revenue. Thus, no investments are required over the short-to-medium term in the ordinary course of business. SBCL also boasts of machine building capability of critical processes at a cost which is a fraction of global alternatives. Considering the critical applications of its products, customers often have detailed and lengthy approval cycles (around three-five years). And as SBCL also works closely with its customers, and its offerings are significantly customised (around 75 per cent of its total offering), the switching costs for a customer is high and at most times, tedious. Vishay Intertechnology (tier-3 player in the automotive sector), a leading American semiconductor and electronic components manufacturer is SBCL’s largest customer. About 40 per cent of its shunt business and 30 per cent of its bimetal business came from the top 5 customers in each segment in FY23 (latest data available). The ratio of costs of shunt resistors to cost of end-use machineries into which they are consumed such as EVs and smart meters is immaterial (around 1 per cent) and hence, customers prefer to outsource it than backward integrate. And the critical applications of these components also result in emphasis on quality than tiny cost differentials, which also bodes well for SBCL over the long term. Demand from the automotive segment, though currently impacted by slowdown in the US markets, is expected to be strong considering EVs touted to need around 8-16 times more shunt resistors than ICE vehicles. And shunt resistors find various use-cases in BMS and EMS too, signalling bright prospects. Smart meter segment continues to grow rapidly for the company, with both shunt resistors and electrical contacts in demand with the government of India’s Smart Meter National Programme aiming to replace 250 million conventional meters by 2027. The switchgear segment, on the other hand, is expected to remain robust with sustained efforts to modernise grids and again electrification. SBCL, thus offering a proxy play to three sunrise sectors, seems to be well placed to ride the tailwinds. On September 27, the Sandhu family – co-promoters – exited the company. This exit has resulted in the remaining promoter (and also, the managing promoters) – the Ghumman family – raising its stake from 25.5 per cent to 33.15 per cent and the entry of institutional investors in a big way (from around 2 per cent prior, to 20 per cent now). The exiting promoter had been selling minor stakes since June 2023 and this complete exit clears the cloud around such promoter stake-selling. The company had entered a MoU with Metalor Technologies, a leading Swiss electrical contacts manufacturer, in FY24, to explore the development of high-performance electrical contacts. But the arrangement has not worked out, and SBCL is considering alternates or to drop out from the same, quoting that significant investments might be required to work the arrangement, which seemed unattractive. Richardson - who was born in England - represented Australia and won three medals for the green and gold at the Paris Olympic Games this year. However, he has since decided to turn his back on Australia and represent the country of his birth. Richardson's decision has caused a massive stir and resulted in AusCycling handing the 25-year-old a lifetime ban, which he has brutally described as "just words on a piece of paper (that) don't carry much weight for me." The star cyclist has already suited up successfully for Great Britain but said an AusCycling review that was released on Monday "was a bit of a shock". He added: "I didn't know it was coming," and "I guess they were just keen to get one last blow, a final word." AusCycling sought a worldwide two-year ban on Richardson after arguing that he threatened their intellectual property by taking his bike with him after Paris. But Richardson said he was never worried the worldwide ban would be enforced and said he kept the bike so as to not arouse suspicions about his defection to Great Britain. Richardson disputed the intellectual property charge that formed part of AusCycling's review and said his bike was just an off-the-shelf Argon anyone could buy. He insisted that he'd returned all AusCycling's equipment and only took it initially as not doing so would have aroused suspicions. "If I'd spoken to my coach and said, 'I'm going to spend six months in Europe to the end of the year, but I'm not going to bring any bike'. He would have gone, 'What are you doing then?'." As for the life ban, he said: "I knew a long time ago that that was never going to be upheld. That was just words on a piece of paper that, again, don't hold any weight." The two-time Olympian says he's "respectful" and "thankful" to AusCycling and argued that he repaid their investment with his results. And Richardson hoped in time that he and the governing body could "come to some sort of sort of understanding" about his switch. That could prove problematic after the bitterness in AusCycling's review which said he "acted in a way which conflicted with the values of AusCycling, the Australian national team and the broader cycling community". Richardson's response to the review is unlikely to help. Of his lifetime ban from AusCycling he said: "I thought it was pretty obvious that by wanting to ride for GB for the rest of my career, that would mean I didn't want to ride for Australia. It's almost like, you leave your job, and three months later they go, 'Yeah, well, you're fired'. 'Well, I already left.' It was just words on a piece of paper, and don't carry much weight for me." The drama comes after Richardson made a superb start to his career as a Team GB rider, beating Dutch ace Harrie Lavreysen in the opening round in both sprint and kierin at the weekend's UCI Track Champions League in Paris. Those results saw him reverse the standings from the Paris Games, with the pair set to meet again later in the week. Richardson - who was born in the UK but moved to Australia when he was nine - said "hearing the announcer call my name, representing Great Britain, was a really special moment". The 25-year-old said the move back to the country of his birth has been quite stressful though and that he's been "out of a suitcase for a few months". Matthew Richardson has now had his say on AusCycling's review In response to his lifetime ban from rejoining the squad, he said: "It’s almost like you leave your job, and three months later, they go, ‘Well, you’re fired!’" — Tom Davidson (@t_davidson) "I've just spent all day building furniture in my flat, trying to move into a new home... nothing about that to me is perfect preparation," Richardson said. "Although it may seem all sunshine and rainbows over here, it's been a stressful couple of months... "I've always been respectful to AusCycling and been very thankful for everything they did for me over the years. And, I really did think I repaid them with results. Unfortunately noise was created. But I sleep well at night knowing that that noise didn't come from myself. Hopefully, in years to come, myself and AusCycling can come to some sort of understanding, but for now I hope they've had their last word, we can put it to bed and enjoy riding in circles."

Residents report frequent encounters with aggressive packs. The issue spotlights public safety, especially of children, the elderly, and gig workers. In response, the Greater Chennai Corporation is expanding its sterilisation programme under the Chennai-Care for Animals Project. Three modern animal birth control centres are set to help the civic body ramp up sterilisation. In its second general body meeting report, the Alliance of Residents’ Welfare Associations (AORWA) claims a significant increase in the stray dog population in the city. A recent survey put the ratio of stray dogs to residents at 2:100, points out the report. It says the World Health Organization has recorded 20,000 deaths in India due to rabies from dog bites in the past year. The report also points to the incidents of stray dogs attacking and harassing residents, especially children and the elderly. Online discussions and social media posts by residents highlight rising encounters with aggressive dogs, especially for delivery executives who work at night. Call for different approach While the authorities in south and central Chennai have initiated sterilisation programmes, residents say these efforts may not be enough to curb the stray dog population. They have called for a different approach to tackling the issue: more sterilisation; strict regulation of pet ownership; and severe penalties for abandoning pets and irresponsible breeding practices. Some suggested utilising veterinary college students to assist in sterilisation procedures and implementing a trap-neuter-release programme for non-aggressive dogs. Sheridon, a feeder in Chennai, who suffered a dog bite once, says more than 90% of the residents are unaware of the animal birth control procedures. He calls for public action. He cites a recent incident in which a breed dog was abandoned. Subsequently, the dog turned ferocious in an unfamiliar environment and attacked people. While the immediate measure, resorted to even by the police, was to hand over the dog to Blue Cross, Mr. Sheridon says people must know that the Greater Chennai Corporation runs animal birth control centres, where dogs can be spayed. He also points to the importance of responsible pet ownership and the consequences of abandoning pets. Consistent feeding and healthy diet As for people discouraging feeders, he says undernourished dogs are not the primary cause of over-population. “Even without regular feeding, dogs will multiply and scavenge. Consistent feeding and ensuring a healthy diet are important. Along with this, regular animal birth control surgeries and check-ups need to be done by feeders and people,” he says. By explaining to people the behaviour of dogs and the role of feeding in creating friendly dogs, feeders can dispel the myths, Mr. Sheridon says. The feeder says that there are almost no unprovoked attacks by dogs — unless they have been infected or hurt. People may not have instigated an attack; the attack may be the result of their shooing them off. “In such situations, remaining calm, avoiding eye contact, and minimising movement can help to ease the situation,” he suggests. Mr. Sheridon opposes the idea of impounding stray dogs, citing the high cost of maintenance. He urges individuals to take responsibility for their pets and contribute to community-based solutions for managing stray dogs through NGOs and residents’ welfare associations. However, Nagarjunan J.M.S., of the AORWA, says dogs roaming in packs are tough for people to handle. He calls for a policy to impound stray dogs. The Greater Chennai Corporation is yet to inaugurate three additional animal birth control centres of which construction completed recently. These centres have come up under the Chennai-Care for Animals Project, which is part of Singara Chennai 2.0. According to the Corporation’s Public Health Department, these centres, located at Lloyd’s Colony, Kannammapet, and Pulianthope, will be opened after a minor work is over. Asked whether stray dogs could be sheltered at these centres during the rains, an official said it would be considered in the coming years. These centres are designed to conduct sterilisation surgeries for 30 dogs a day. This ₹20-crore project will help to increase Chennai’s dog sterilisation capacity to 27,000 a year. Each centre will be equipped with 100 kennels and 40 cages that can be brought in vehicles to take street dogs for sterilisation. The stainless-steel kennels are meant for sheltering the animals after the surgery, an official says. The official says anti-skid tiles are used at these centres as they are suitable for the dogs’ paws. Earlier, the Corporation Council approved a resolution to conduct 50,000 animal birth control surgeries a year. “The 27,000 surgeries planned will be part of the 50,000 surgeries aimed. Two more centres will come up at Ariyalur (Ward 17) and Perungudi (Ward 184). The land has been identified and the cost is being estimated,” the official adds. Check-up at old centres In March, employees of the old animal birth control centre at Kannammapet requested for replacement of the rusted gates. “The old gates were replaced by the Mechanical Engineering Department of the Corporation recently. The old animal birth control centres may be used for regular check-ups and treatment, while the new centres could be used for surgeries. At the Pulianthope pound, the ground will be used for dogs to stroll,” the official says. The request was submitted on Friday as TikTok and the Biden administration presented opposing briefs to the court. TikTok called on the justices to strike down a law that could result in the platform’s ban by January 19, 2025, while the Biden administration defended the statute, citing national security concerns. Trump, who filed an amicus brief in the case, maintained a neutral position on the legal dispute. However, he urged the court to extend the deadline for TikTok to divest from its China-based parent company, ByteDance, to allow for a negotiated solution after he assumes office. “President Trump takes no position on the underlying merits of this dispute,” the brief stated. “Instead, he respectfully requests that the Court consider staying the Act’s deadline for divestment of January 19, 2025, while it considers the merits of this case.” The filing marks Trump’s latest intervention in a major national issue before his inauguration. The Republican president-elect has been actively engaging with foreign leaders and business figures at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida while assembling his administration. Last week, he met with TikTok CEO Shou Chew to discuss the platform’s future. Trump’s position on TikTok has evolved. During his first term, he attempted to ban the app over national security concerns, but his stance shifted during his 2024 presidential campaign when he joined TikTok to connect with younger voters. His campaign effectively used the platform to share viral, often macho-themed content aimed at engaging male audiences. Despite his opposition to banning the app outright, Trump has reiterated that he still sees potential national security risks with TikTok. TikTok and ByteDance are challenging a law signed by President Joe Biden in April, which mandates TikTok’s divestment from ByteDance or a U.S. ban. The statute was upheld earlier this month by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, prompting TikTok to appeal to the Supreme Court. The oral arguments, scheduled for January 10, will address whether the law unlawfully restricts free speech under the First Amendment. TikTok’s legal team argues the statute is based on speculative risks that China could influence TikTok’s U.S. operations through ByteDance, despite no evidence of such interference. “The government concedes that it has no evidence China has ever attempted to do so,” TikTok’s brief stated, adding that the fears are “predicated on future risks.” The Biden administration has defended the law, emphasizing that TikTok’s integration with ByteDance and reliance on proprietary technology developed in China pose inherent risks. Officials argue that Chinese authorities could compel ByteDance to provide data on U.S. users or manipulate content on the platform. However, TikTok maintains that the government’s concerns are unfounded and that a forced divestment would harm its operations and violate free speech protections. With the Supreme Court set to hear arguments in January, the fate of TikTok in the U.S. hangs in the balance. Trump’s plea for a delay signals his intention to address the issue diplomatically after taking office, potentially reshaping the platform’s future in the country. This ongoing legal battle underscores the broader tensions between the U.S. and China over data security and digital sovereignty, with TikTok caught in the crossfire. Source: AP
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — Jurors in New Mexico have awarded a man more than $412 million in a medical malpractice case that involved a men’s health clinic that operates in several states. The man’s attorneys celebrated Monday’s verdict, saying they are hopeful it will prevent other men from falling victim to a scheme that involved fraud and what they described as dangerous penile injections. They said the jury award for punitive and compensatory damages is likely the largest in history for a medical malpractice case. The award follows a trial held in Albuquerque earlier this month that centered on allegations outlined in a lawsuit filed by the man's attorneys in 2020. NuMale Medical Center and company officials were named as defendants. According to the complaint, the man was 66 when he visited the clinic in 2017 in search of treatment for fatigue and weight loss. The clinic is accused of misdiagnosing him and unnecessarily treating him with “invasive erectile dysfunction shots” that caused irreversible damage. “This out of state medical corporation set up a fraudulent scheme to make millions off of conning old men by scaring them with a fake test,” Nick Rowley, the man's attorney, wrote in a social media post that detailed the verdict. Rowley went on to say that the scheme involved clinic workers telling patients they would have irreversible damage if they didn't agree to injections three times a week. NuMale Medical Center President Brad Palubicki said in a statement issued Tuesday that the company is committed to high-quality and safe patient care. He said NuMale disagrees with the verdict and intend to pursue all available legal remedies, including an appeal. A message seeking additional comment was left Wednesday with the company and its attorney. NuMale also has clinics in Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Nevada, Nebraska, North Carolina and Wisconsin. According to court records, jurors found that fraudulent and negligent conduct by the defendants resulted in damages to the plaintiff. They also found that unconscionable conduct by the defendants violated the Unfair Practices Act.
As snow blankets the Colorado mountains, outdoor enthusiasts have a unique opportunity: the winter hut trip. Whether you’re a skier or a snowshoer, a hut trip offers an excellent opportunity to connect with nature while exploring the rugged beauty of the state’s wilderness and enjoying the warmth and camaraderie of a cozy mountain hut. From the towering peaks of the San Juan Mountains to the snow-covered trails in Summit County, Colorado’s winter hut trips provide an unforgettable experience for adventurers of all levels. Huts fill up fast, so check each property’s for pricing and availability. Located between Telluride and Silverton near the top of Ophir Pass in the San Juan Mountains, the Opus Hut was built for backcountry skiers, mountaineers, hikers and mountain bikers. At 11,700 feet, the hut sits at treeline with low-angle glades below and open slopes above. While intermediate powder skiing is available out the back door of the hut, owner Travis Mohrman said the terrain is best suited for experienced backcountry skiers. Mohrman estimates that 15% to 20% of the groups visiting Opus Hut do so with guides. “They’re not personally comfortable with the terrain or they’re not from the area,” Mohrman said. “They guides are knowledgeable about local conditions — what the snow is, what’s safe and what’s not safe.” The cabin accommodates up to 20 people in five rooms. Some visitors book the whole hut and bring friends and family, while others reserve available beds in unbooked rooms. The hut features solar-powered lighting and 110-volt outlets for charging electronic devices. It also has filtered drinking water, hot and cold tap water, and indoor composting toilets. It provides full bedding and clean sleeping bag liners. During winter, the hut has four to six employees who sleep in a separate cabin. They prepare meals with natural, organic, and, when possible, locally grown products. The hut accommodates vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free diets–just be sure to inform the staff beforehand. It also offers beer, wine, and a limited selection of spirits for purchase. “You can travel much lighter if you don’t have to bring in your food,” said Mohrman, who took over the hut three years ago. “You don’t have to focus on the upkeep of being in the backcountry.” Reservations for Opus Hut open Aug. 1. “The winter fills up quick,” Mohrman said. “Every winter weekend books in the first five minutes.” Nestled at 11,200 feet in the San Juan National Forest, Campfire Ranch Red Mountain Pass is the perfect base for exploring world-class skiing, split boarding, snowshoeing, and ice climbing. Located between Silverton and Ouray, it’s is accessible during the winter via a half-mile backcountry over-snow approach. Campfire Ranch is an ideal choice for novices. While other Colorado hut systems require you to carry your own food, bring sleeping bags, and live off-grid, this one provides food service, solar-powered electricity, Wi-Fi, and bedding. The dog-friendly cabin accommodates eight people. “We took a hospitality approach to remove barriers to entry for people who want to have the experience but don’t have the gear or the knowledge,” said Katrin Meiusi, director of marketing for the properties. Campfire Ranch first opened a campground on the Taylor River in Almont near Crested Butte. RVs are not permitted at the campground, which is open from May to October. Amenities include unlimited firewood, clean bathrooms, and drinkable well water. The 38 backcountry huts managed by the non-profit 10th Mountain Division Hut Association are connected by 350 miles of trails among some of the tallest peaks in the lower 48 states. All huts, some of which accommodate up to 17 people, have kitchens with propane burners for cooking — propane is provided. They provide pots, pans, potholders, dishware, cooking and eating utensils, a percolator or French press for coffee, salt and pepper, paper towels, dish soap, hand sanitizer, cleaning supplies and trash bags. Some huts have ovens and propane grills. All huts provide lighting from on-site solar power, propane or a generator. A few huts also have outlets for charging small devices such as phones. The huts have either an outhouse or an indoor bathroom with toilet paper supplied. All huts include mattresses and pillows, but you must bring your sleeping bag and pillowcase. Summit Hut Association operates five backcountry huts open for winter from November to May. Francie’s and Janet’s cabins are also open for summer use from July to September. All huts have solar-powered lights, fully stocked kitchens, and wood-burning stoves. Francie’s, Janet’s, and Sisters’ cabins have saunas and indoor toilets. The association hosts its annual Backcountry Ball fundraiser in October at The Maggie on Peak to kick off the season. The event includes dinner, drinks, a silent auction and entertainment. Proceeds help maintain the network of backcountry cabins.UCF, LSU face off with improved focus in mind
