Blake Snell and Dodgers agree to $182 million, 5-year contract, AP source saysThe world's warming tropical wetlands are releasing more methane than ever before, research shows — an alarming sign that the world's climate goals are slipping further out of reach. A massive surge in wetlands methane — unaccounted for by national emissions plans and undercounted in scientific models — could raise the pressure on governments to make deeper cuts from their fossil fuel and agriculture industries, according to researchers. Wetlands hold huge stores of carbon in the form of dead plant matter that is slowly broken down by soil microbes. Rising temperatures are like hitting the accelerator on that process, speeding up the biological interactions that produce methane. Heavy rains, meanwhile, trigger flooding that causes wetlands to expand. Scientists had long projected wetland methane emissions would rise as the climate warmed, but from 2020 to 2022, air samples showed the highest methane concentrations in the atmosphere since reliable measurements began in the 1980s. Four studies published in recent months say that tropical wetlands are the likeliest culprit for the spike, with tropical regions contributing more than 7 million tonnes to the methane surge over the last few years. "Methane concentrations are not just rising, but rising faster in the last five years than any time in the instrument record," said Stanford University environmental scientist Rob Jackson, who chairs the group that publishes the five-year Global Methane Budget, last released in September. Satellite instruments revealed the tropics as the source of a large increase. Scientists further analyzed distinct chemical signatures in the methane to determine whether it came from fossil fuels or a natural source — in this case, wetlands. The Congo, Southeast Asia and the Amazon and southern Brazil contributed the most to the spike in the tropics, researchers found. Data published in March 2023 in Nature Climate Change shows that annual wetland emissions over the past two decades were about 500,000 tonnes per year higher than what scientists had projected under worst-case climate scenarios. Capturing emissions from wetlands is challenging with current technologies. "We should probably be a bit more worried than we are," said climate scientist Drew Shindell at Duke University, The La Nina climate pattern that delivers heavier rains to parts of the tropics appeared somewhat to blame for the surge, according to one study published in September in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. But La Nina alone, which last ended in 2023, cannot explain record-high emissions, Shindell said. For countries trying to tackle climate change, "this has major implications when planning for methane and carbon dioxide emissions cuts," said Zhen Qu, an atmospheric chemist at North Carolina State University who led the study on La Nina impacts. If wetland methane emissions continue to rise, scientists say governments will need to take stronger action to hold warming at 1.5 C (2.7 F), as agreed in the United Nations Paris climate accord. WATER WORLD Methane is 80 times more powerful than carbon dioxide (CO2) at trapping heat over a timespan of 20 years, and accounts for about one-third of the 1.3 degrees Celsius (2.3 F) in warming that the world has registered since 1850. Unlike CO2, however, methane washes out of the atmosphere after about a decade, so it has less of a long-term impact. More than 150 countries have pledged to deliver 30% cuts from 2020 levels by 2030, tackling leaky oil and gas infrastructure. But scientists have not yet observed a slowdown, even as technologies to detect methane leaks have improved. Methane emissions from fossil fuels have remained around a record high of 120 million tonnes since 2019, according to the International Energy Agency's 2024 Global Methane Tracker report. Satellites have also picked up more than 1,000 large methane plumes from oil and gas operations over the past two years, according to a U.N. Environment Programme report published on Friday, but the countries notified responded to just 12 leaks. Some countries have announced ambitious plans for cutting methane. China last year said it would strive to curb flaring, or burning off emissions at oil and gas wells. President Joe Biden's administration finalized a methane fee for big oil and gas producers last week, but it is likely to be scrapped by the incoming presidency of Donald Trump. The Democratic Republic of Congo's environment minister Eve Bazaiba told Reuters on the sidelines of the U.N. climate summit COP29 that the country was working to assess the methane surging from the Congo Basin's swampy forests and wetlands. Congo was the largest hotspot of methane emissions in the tropics in the 2024 methane budget report. "We don't know how much [methane is coming off our wetlands]," she said. "That's why we bring in those who can invest in this way, also to do the monitoring to do the inventory, how much we have, how we can also exploit them."

NEW YORK — Juan Soto appears on a timetable to decide on where to sign either before or during baseball’s winter meetings in Dallas, which run from Dec. 8-12. Soto met with the New York Yankees, New York Mets, Los Angeles Dodgers, Boston Red Sox and Toronto Blue Jays, a person familiar with the negotiations said last week, speaking to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because details were not announced. Soto’s agent, Scott Boras, asked teams to submit initial offers by Thanksgiving, a second person familiar with the talks said, also on condition of anonymity because it was not announced. Soto is the top player available among this year’s free agents. A four-time All-Star, Soto finished third in AL MVP voting after hitting .288 with 41 homers, 109 RBIs and 129 walks. He has a .285 career average with 201 homers, 592 RBIs and 769 walks over seven major league seasons. Soto turned down a $440 million, 15-year offer from Washington in 2022, prompting the Nationals to trade him to San Diego, which then dealt him to the Yankees last December. Less than a month after winning the World Series, the Los Angeles Dodgers are spending big again to add one of baseball's best pitchers to their star-studded roster. Blake Snell and the Dodgers agreed to a $182 million, five-year contract, according to a person with direct knowledge of the negotiations. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Tuesday night because the deal is subject to a successful physical. The two-time Cy Young Award winner broke the news personally by posting a photo of himself on social media in a Dodgers uniform — No. 7. Snell gets a $52 million signing bonus, payable on Jan. 20, and annual salaries of $26 million, of which $13 million each year will be deferred. Because Snell is a Washington state resident, the signing bonus will not be subject to California income tax. Snell would join two-way star Shohei Ohtani and fellow Japanese right-hander Yoshinobu Yamamoto atop Los Angeles' rotation, giving the Dodgers the first megadeal this offseason following Ohtani's $700 million, 10-year contract and Yamamoto's $325 million, 12-year agreement last offseason. IT'S taken just 11 months for some Manchester United fans to turn on minority co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe. And doubters in the Old Trafford faithful will no doubt be left even more frustrated when they find out what could've been under the Qatari administration, who had plans to revolutionise the club in just THREE DAYS. Fan pressure and soaring costs saw the majority owning Glazer family announce that they were open to selling United in November 2022. And Qatari billionaire banker Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad al-Thani, entered the race to buy Britain's biggest football club. After months of speculation, Sheikh Jassim's final £4.5billion offer for full control was shunned by the Glazers , in favour of Britain's richest man Ratcliffe. Ratcliffe's own £1.2bn offer for a 27.7 per cent stake was accepted, and the 72-year-old, a life long fan, was effectively given the keys, taking control of all operations. But things haven't gone to plan, with sporting director Dan Ashworth leaving the club after just five months in his role in the latest of a string of PR disasters. Almost 12 months on, the 'new' United lurches from horror show to another under Ratcliffe and his Ineos officers. Ahead of Sunday's derby at Man City they find themselves in a lowly 13th place in the Premier League. After 15 games they are 16 points behind Liverpool, who spanked them 3-0 at Old Trafford. FOOTBALL FREE BETS AND SIGN UP DEALS But the Mail have now revealed an inside swoop into what could've happened in M16 if the Qatari's were allowed to buy the club outright. Plans for a United rebirth, fuelled by vast wealth and some of the finest sporting and finance brains on earth , had already been carefully drafted. The strategy for 'Project Ruby' saw the Qatari's pledge to announce the takeover on the first day. The removal of ALL of the club's debt would come on the second day. And United would be taken off the New York Stock Exchange and no longer answerable to far-away stakeholders. By day three, Sheikh Jassim would reveal plans for a brand new state-of-the-art stadium. That's it, a clean break in three days to change the club's history and current predicament. As for Old Trafford, there would be no attempt to grab any money from the taxpayer, or confusion over whether this would be a refurbishment or a rebuild. Ratcliffe was reportedly lobbying the government's "Levelling Up" plan to give the north of England a venue to rival Wembley. And the iconic ground continues to rot away, hampered by an embarrassing leaky roof and dead RATS under seats. Under Sheikh Jassim this would have been a more straightforward process. A senior adviser to the Qatari group told the Mail: "The b****y thing would have been fully in-motion now. "A stadium for a football club paid for by a football club and nobody else. And as for the staff Ratcliffe is firing - we would have been hiring." None of the above will be of solace to the United fans – and the large numbers of staff - who had wanted the Sheikh Jassim bid to succeed. Populous, the designers responsible for many of the venues at the 2022 World Cup , had already drawn up plans, which were shared with bidders for United. It can now be disclosed that an 'adaptable' stadium was being seriously considered, with a capacity of between 90,000 and 100,000. Leading commercial property company JLL, based in Manchester city centre, had already been signed up to work on the project. And there was a separate fund planned for the women's team, who would've had their own training centre in Manchester. Far from being given the sack, Sir Alex Ferguson was to be cherished and invited onto an advisory board. Others, including Class of '92 members David Beckham and Gary Neville, were also being lined up to add their input. But the opposite has come true. Ratcliffe's hated cost-cutting campaign has seen 250 redundancies made and tickets were hiked to £66 for kids and pensioners. He's even turned into the grinch and replaced the £100 staff Christmas bonus with a £40 M&S voucher in his latest money-saving measure. Fans have already protested outside Old Trafford begging to stop being "exploited". But it might not be the end of the story. The advisor told the Mail: "Sheikh Jassim is still a rich guy. "He is still a United fan. He is not going to rush off and try another Premier League club. 'If the opportunity to buy the whole of Manchester United arose again at some point in the future it is hard to see there not being a big level of interest. The plans are still there."
