LAS VEGAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec 6, 2024-- Guests were tickled pink at last night’s grand opening event for Lisa Vanderpump’s newest restaurant and cocktail bar, Pinky’s by Vanderpump, at Flamingo Las Vegas. Friends of Vanderpump joined the party to celebrate, including actors Jesse Bradford and Andrea Watrouse, reality television stars Tom Schwartz and Peter Madrigal, and the cast from Vanderpump’s latest show, “Vanderpump Villa.” Pinky’s by Vanderpump (coined after Vanderpump’s nickname, “Pinky”) features playful and decadent dishes that complement uniquely Instagrammable cocktails and the restaurateur’s signature design aesthetic. “Pinky’s has been a true labor of love, and we are excited to bring such an iconic resort on The Strip back to its glory days of old. Once again, Caesars Entertainment has trusted us to envision and create a truly unique experience, and we are thrilled to continue our partnership. Through our design company Vanderpump Alain, Nick Alain and I have created bespoke décor that embraces the Art Deco era and the authenticity of Flamingo, where the glamour of the Las Vegas Strip was born. We wanted you to feel that you’ve stepped back in time into a stunning room with an incredible feel-good factor, reminiscent of a bygone era. It’s sumptuous, luscious and a design that Vanderpump Alain is very proud of,” said Lisa Vanderpump. With a nod to the Flamingo’s vibrant history, the 198-seat restaurant and bar combines Art Deco glamour with lavish and decadent Vanderpump flair. Spanning nearly 7,000 square feet and set against a palette of muted greens, brass accents and soft blush pink hues, the space boasts a dramatic 32-seat bar. Similar to Vanderpump’s other concepts, the design, lighting and fixtures are bespoke Vanderpump Alain creations designed specifically for the space. The VIP lounge can seat up to 40 guests. Dramatic oversized booths are surrounded by brass Art Deco trellises. A vintage-inspired statue spins behind the center of the bar, surrounded by gold chains and crystals. An oversized tree spans the glass ceiling of an epic conservatory looking out over the Las Vegas Strip. The extensive and whimsical cocktail menu features Vanderpump classics and nods to the Flamingo’s beginnings, like the Pinky’s Martini , served tableside on a vintage gold tray. Other offerings include the Flip the Bird (a green goddess margarita served in a tiny gold birdcage), the Pump & Bump (a caviar martini served with a pearl spoonful of caviar on a gold plate) and the Daddy Issues (a white peach French 75 topped with pink cotton candy). The menu features elevated bar staples and twists on Las Vegas classics, with elegant and unique presentations. The Deviled Egg Gardens feature five upright deviled eggs with decadent toppings, such as lobster, crab salad, caviar, bacon and blue cheese, and cornichon. Wagyu Sliders are finished with roasted shishito peppers and dill pickle tater tots. The Pinky’s Shrimp Cocktail arrives in an oversized martini glass with ice-cold smoke pouring out. The Signature Birdcages offer a stunning presentation of cheese and accoutrements or charcuterie, accordingly; and the gorgeous Pinky’s Baked Alaska is sliced to reveal three layers of pale pink and green Neapolitan semifreddo to complement the décor. “It is all about the details with Lisa Vanderpump, and she never fails to deliver on her promise of innovative cocktails, a stunning aesthetic and delicious food,” said Dan Walsh, SVP and General Manager of Flamingo Las Vegas. “Pinky’s by Vanderpump ushers in a new era for the iconic Flamingo, and we are honored to partner with Lisa and her husband Ken to bring this experience to life for our guests.” Pinky’s by Vanderpump at Flamingo Las Vegas is located along Las Vegas Boulevard next to The Cromwell. he unfolding power struggle in South Korea this past week has many of the elements and the plots needed to make a best-selling Korean drama about how real liberal democracy works to protect society. Here is the synopsis: An unpopular president desperately clinging to power sends the military to the streets of Seoul, but parliament quickly responds by voting overwhelmingly to reject the martial law which he has declared. In the meantime, thousands of people gather outside the parliament building, defying curfew and confronting fully-armed soldiers and tanks, giving passage for enough members of parliament to assemble and do their work. This real political drama, which happened on the night of Dec. 3, is short and sweet, not like the traditional made-for-TV Korean dramas that can drag on for many seasons. Not only was martial law rolled back, opposition parties in parliament are now moving to impeach President Yoon Suk-yeol. But this last part is more the epilogue. The climax of this drama already occurred when the president lifted martial law only hours after declaring it. A classic story of the good beating out evil. We couldn’t ask for a happier ending. The real story, and the real lesson for Koreans and for the rest of the world, is that democracy, which in its true sense means the will of the people, is resilient enough to beat back a president who uses the power of the gun to prolong his unwelcome stay. Democracy survived because the Korean people willed it and fought for it. This drama defies the trend seen in other parts of the world where established and not-so-established democracies are moving toward authoritarianism, and where people have passively accepted their fate instead of fighting to defend it. Whether you're looking to broaden your horizons or stay informed on the latest developments, "Viewpoint" is the perfect source for anyone seeking to engage with the issues that matter most. While the villains in this drama are clear, Yoon and his cohorts who are trying to cling to power, the real heroes are the people, particularly those who took to the streets and gathered outside the parliament building which was already fortified by the military. A video that went viral that night shows a woman tussling with an armed soldier. She won the fight but only because the soldier, to his credit, restrained from opening fire. The entire story would have taken a different twist if blood were shed. This would have been the preferred plot for an impactful TV drama. In real life, Koreans show there is no need for killing. You just have to be resolute in order to protect democracy. One could easily forget the role the internet and social media play in rescuing democracy. That night, the military visited all legacy media outlets to impose a news blackout which is part and parcel of martial law. But the internet and social media platforms are not under military control. They could not control it even if they wanted to. The net was flooded with news and information about the tense hours following the declaration of martial law. Through social media, people shared video clips of the emergency hearing in parliament by 190 members who made it there to take the vote, and of the hundreds of people who defied the military curfew. Three decades ago or more, before the era of the internet, most people would not have known about what was happening and would have remained passive players in the unfolding drama. We should credit the Korean military for not succumbing to the temptation of power. They followed the president’s order to impose martial law, but as soon as parliament voted to roll it back, the soldiers quickly backed off and were returned to barracks. Now, president Yoon’s days are numbered. His claims that anti-state forces were working to undermine the country, in collaboration with communists and the North Korean government, fell flat. No one would buy this from a leader who has lost all credibility. South Korea will still go through political instability until this leadership matter is settled. The political drama continues, but we can say for sure that the worst is over.
Finland seizes Russia-linked ship over undersea cable damageIn 1980, a TV adaptation of James Clavell’s 1975 novel “Shogun” wowed viewers overseas. The story of an English sailor navigating political machinations in feudal Japan sparked a fascination for all things related to the country. Forty years later, a new adaptation of the same story once again spurred significant interest in Japan. The latest iteration of “Shogun,” created by American channel FX and made by a joint American-Japanese team, won over viewers around the world with its tale of cross-cultural intrigue after premiering in February. The series scored rave reviews and strong ratings before going on to clean up at the Emmy Awards, including becoming the first non-English-language winner for best drama. “It was an East-meets-West dream project,” said Hiroyuki Sanada in his acceptance speech for the lead actor in a drama series award. The show’s success was the pinnacle of a year in which Japanese television, bolstered by support from streaming services such as Netflix and Disney+, revealed new creative ambitions both at home and abroad. The triumph of “Shogun” at the Emmys offered a moment akin to the South Korean film “Parasite” winning the Oscar for best picture in 2020. It was a significant achievement for everyone involved in the project, but it also served as an exclamation point for an industry that had already been creating great work.

Jardine’s Lookout is a mountain in Hong Kong’s Wan Chai district rising above Happy Valley. Named after William Jardine, founder of Jardine Matheson, it has a historic past. Now a global business conglomerate, Jardine Matheson was one of Hong Kong's original trading houses dating back to imperial China. From here, Jardine watched out for the sails of the company’s clippers bring goods and traders from India and London. Today, Jardine’s Lookout is a popular hiking trail with the reward of Victoria Harbour views at the peak. “Jardine’s Lookout is a verdant residential area known for its tranquillity and scenic views,” said Alex Ho, who co-founded Hong Kong-based interior design firm Soil Studios with his wife and business partner, OJ Miu. The studio was also behind the design of Wyndham Social – Centrals’ newest art and cultural space. The sprawling nature and low density of Jardine’s Lookout is miles away from Hong Kong’s general ultra-dense real estate stock, but it’s only an efficient five-minute drive down to Causeway Bay. High-end shops and amenities like schools catering to residents make this a sort of bubble only the most privileged can enter into. Not surprisingly, it is also where Hong Kong’s most affluent choose to stay. Residents include tycoons, celebrities, government officials and expatriates on the higher rung of the pay scale. This is the setting of a home designed by Soil Studios, located in a luxury condominium development called Duke’s Place. There are only 15 units in the building designed by UK- and Hong Kong-based Studio PDP, with most being duplexes. In each unit, four-metre sliding corner glass doors are incorporated into the continuous ribbon windows so one feels entirely connected to the outdoors. The ribbon windows also mean that natural light travels deep into each apartment. “The mountainous landscape visible from the home is a highlight, providing a serene backdrop that enhances the feeling of retreat and connection with nature,” said Ho. With such a spectacular view, how can one create an interior that enhances rather than compete with the scenery? ? The solution was to mirror the surroundings, using plenty of organic materials and earth tones “to reflect the natural beauty of the environment”, Ho responded. Wood, leather, marble and glass meld elegantly, alongside exquisite detail and interesting touches. Ho said: “Features like the sculptural light fixture in the stairwell mimic the fluid forms of the hill’s contours. This harmony between the architecture and its setting enhances the tranquil atmosphere, making the home feel like a part of the lush landscape.” At the private lift lobby, geometric green, black and ivory wallpaper make a refreshing and bold first statement. The design team inserted a fabric-laminated glass screen between this zone and the common areas to diffuse daylight into the originally dark space. The geometric print is seen again inside the common area, as the backing of a bespoke glass cabinet to display artful paraphernalia. In front of it, two plush armchairs from Poliform and a small glass table from Potocco define an informal sitting area. In the common area, the palette comprises beige and brown, with spots of cobalt and navy in the furnishing and joinery. They mimic the colours of nature and sky from outside the expansive windows. In one corner is the dining area, anchored by a round, 10-seater walnut timber dining table from Giorgetti. Behind it, walls are detailed as with repetitive profiles and wrapped oak timber veneer, giving the surface a three-dimensional effect. The family’s dedication to belting out musical hits as a communal activity is facilitated by a karaoke lounge with a superior sound system and a dedicated television set, backed by indigo fabric. The main television set is incorporated into a feature wall behind the living space, wrapped in high-gloss red mahogany wood in a book-matched pattern. Ho shared that this design feature was inspired by a gentleman’s cigar lounge, hence the masculine and more ornate aesthetic. This wall also demarcates the public and private zones of the apartment as it hides the staircase to the bedrooms. In this home, no wall is left untouched, even the transitional spaces. The stairwell wall is decorated with metallic silver wallpaper, whose subtle sheen is repeated in the aforementioned custom chandelier of interlocking bronze forms, dangling from the ceiling like a giant necklace. It was conceptualised as a piece of art installation, Ho highlighted. The artistic ambience continues upstairs, where a lightly stuccoed wall becomes the backdrop for artwork. In a small sliver of wall between the doors of the two bedrooms, Ho inserted a slim, orange lacquered shelf that becomes a stage for a petite floral arrangement, flanked by curved timber walls and accented by ambient illumination. The master bedroom also boasts abundant textures. Among dark timber walls and earth-toned fabrics, a panel of backlit, monochromatic wall with geometric prints adds interest to the vertical surfaces. Ho highlighted that it was intended to bring a dose of exuberance into the space. The blue ombre curtain does that as well, while a bamboo silk rug adds softness to the timber floors. The use of the colour blue continues into the walk-in wardrobe, screened off from the sleeping area with a glass panel inlaid with fabric. This functional area is given a craft sensibility with blue lacquered joinery and blue vinyl leather shelving. The second bedroom has a more subdued mood. Beige fabric panels on the walls and a silver-toned bamboo floor rug lend softness underfoot. A round, top-hung mirror atop a ‘floating’ table lends lightness to a corner; likewise, a family of bronze-tinted glass pendants illuminate the bedside. Ho explained that the apartment was designed with dual personalities – as a family space in the day and entertainment area at night. “The family spend weekends enjoying time together in the open living areas or hosting friends in the sophisticated dining space.” The dining area was conveniently located next to the karaoke corner for this purpose. During the daytime, ample light streams in, highlighting the many textures. At night, when illumination is lowered, these fade into the background and only some key accents become the focus. One of them is the dining’s bespoke chandelier, conceived as a cluster of stainless steel rings with crystal-encrusted edges in a complex tangle. Ho added that the interior design adheres closely to feng shui principles. But there are no gaudy colours or awkward parts. The aim is to incorporate good aesthetics and functionality with a sense of harmony. Some examples are seen in the placement of the bed and the ample use of the colour blue. Like in a high-end hotel, there are plentiful luxurious touches in the apartment but they are designed for everyday comfort rather than as showpieces. Finesse comes in the careful deliberation of materials as well as the painstakingly designed details that extend to doorway thresholds and cabinetry profiles. With every jointure, corner and surface well thought out, there is good visual flow to the entire apartment. It is just like nature’s work – beautiful, harmonious, and with plenty to see and feel.HOUSTON — Dillon Brooks scored a season-high 28 points and led the Houston Rockets to a 116-88 win over the Portland Trail Blazers in an NBA Cup game on Friday night. It wasn’t so long ago — just last year in fact — that social media was awash with would-be : super-straight shiny hair, bee-stung lips covering blinding white teeth, doe eyes streaked with mascara and a wasp waist dividing an ample butt and prominent breasts. But — in tandem with the rise of Ozempic and other GLP-1 medications — that image is fading fast. Even the Kardashians themselves are deflating, with butts apparently reduced and fillers seemingly dissolved. But as always in , it’s all about the details, and those vary from industry to industry. asked surgeons on both coasts to reveal what their clients are asking for these days. “Lifts and even breast reductions are on the rise, along with tummy tucks to make the midsection look more fit,” says New York plastic surgeon Darren Smith. He also reports a 25 percent uptick in mini arm lifts, which give the area a more streamlined and toned appearance, without the unsightly scars of a true brachioplasty. “I see a 20 percent increase in women coming in for lifts this year over last,” notes Lyle Leipziger, chief of plastic and reconstructive surgery at both North Shore University Hospital and Long Island Jewish Medical Center. “And those that want implants only want to go up one bra size.” Some things don’t change: L.A. still wants bigger boobs — an average of 200 ccs more per implant than on the East Coast, says plastic surgeon Troy Pittman. Pittman reports that women nationwide are clamoring for Motiva, the new implants approved in September by the FDA that are more biocompatible, meaning there’s less risk of rupture or capsular contraction that results in hardening. “They’ve put to bed a lot of safety issues and are a game-changer,” he says. ” The country is in the grip of filler fear. Dr. Annie Chiu, who has a practice in Redondo Beach, feels it’s largely the result of social media. “We are facing an injectable backlash, and the filler market has been down in ’24,” she observes. “At first, everyone was encouraged to get that very contoured, overfilled Instagram face, but now there is a real fear of looking weird. My colleagues think that L.A. is more overdone, but there is bad work everywhere, especially Miami and Dallas, and the Housewives of New York don’t exactly have that subtle look.” Chiu points out the counteraction was felt by Kristin Davis when she appeared in . “She is a consummate New Yorker and was attacked online for being overfilled, but she had it corrected and now looks better.” Howard Sobel, a New York dermatologist, reported that his patients from Los Angeles still want a fuller, more rounded face than his New Yorkers request. “They want an exaggerated feminine look because that gets you noticed, but that look has never been New York. They bring in pictures of celebrities they want to look like, but they don’t even have similar facial structures.” Ironically, facelifts are now seen as less drastic and altering than injectables, and even fat that was routinely added during a lift is being avoided. “I continue to see an increasing number of patients trading years of fillers for a facelift, and many of them are adamant about not looking overfilled with fat grafting,” says Sean Alemi, a New York facial plastic surgeon. “In fact, I would say that I’m performing almost 80 percent of my facelifts without fat these days. It’s a new era.” The typical customers for body work long have been women from their 20s to their 40s. But doctors notice a trend of people coming for such procedures later than ever before. “I now have women in their 60s, 70s and even 80s coming in to get their breasts and tummies done,” says Leipziger. People may be getting work done later, but they are also starting earlier and doing less drastic surgeries, some even without going under. “It’s the tweakment movement,” says Alemi. “People in their 40s don’t want to wait until aging affects their entire face, so they are getting lower eyelid skin pinches and upper lid lifts to get rid of hooding, using just local anesthesia. It freshens without changing the shape of the face.” Leipziger also has witnessed a marked increase in requests for mini facelifts from women in their 40s. Dermatologist Soren White says his colleagues in L.A. are seeing patients come in even earlier for anti-aging. “In L.A., it’s not unusual for an 18- or 20-year-old to come in for filler — it’s a rite of passage,” he says. When it comes to smiles, “L.A. has more of a brighter, bigger, wow effect, and it doesn’t have to look natural,” says Larry Rosenthal, a New York dentist whose patients have included Donald and Ivanka Trump and Sumner Redstone. “In New York, people want a wider smile.” Dr. Marc Lowenberg, whose office has treated the teeth of Martha Stewart, Julianna Margulies, Heidi Klum and Cindy Crawford, says New York patients specifically ask to not have the West Coast style. “I have a guy in my chair right now who said he doesn’t want his teeth to walk in the room before he does. People say, ‘I don’t want Hollywood white.’ Things have been toned down, but in general, in L.A. they call more attention to your smile than we do here.” Cosmetic dentist Lana Rozenberg, who tends to the mouths of Justin Theroux, Clive Owen and Helena Christensen, said patients have become more participative in the artistic end of smile improvement, thanks to AI: “With new software, such as Overjet and SmileFy, patients can envision their future smiles before going through the process of placing crowns or veneers on their teeth. This makes it more accurate, and more interactive.’’ Lowenberg feels that D.C. is still even more under the radar. “The veneers have always been more conservative, with the exception of Joe Biden’s, which were so white that people commented on them.” Noses also have become more natural as surgeons say goodbye to the upturned and button varieties. “Noses have changed; we try to leave more structure behind now,” says Linda Li, a Beverly Hills plastic surgeon who was in the original cast of . “You want a nose that fits. If you have a broad face, a tiny-ass nose looks ridiculous.” Buccal fat removal, once a hugely popular procedure in L.A. that sharpened facial contours, is on a sharp decline. “I am getting fewer requests for it now because it can accelerate the aging process and make people look gaunt,” observes Carl Truesdale, a Beverly Hills facial plastic surgeon. Truesdale says there is a greater emphasis on the neck now, including removing some salivary glands. “Men see that Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise are looking younger, and they are opting for a sharper jawline, which can be achieved with submandibular gland removal and muscle tightening.” (Not all docs are fans of this controversial procedure, as it is aggressive and can affect the production of saliva). Truesdale also is seeing less lateral brow lift, a swing Matt Gaetz seemed to have missed. Notes Truesdale, “Last year, people asked to look like Bella Hadid, but this year the fox eye is downtrending.” Dr. Robert Schwarcz, double board certified NY Oculoplastic Surgeon, says the classic severe brow lift — which altered the hairline — has made way for a more subtle forehead adjustment. “Brow lifts are trending on social media due to the popularity of the temporal lift, a shortened version which addresses the tail of the brow,’’ he explains. “This gives a lift to the upper eyelids without a surprised look.” . Meet Jalen Redmond, the undrafted free agent carving out a niche with the VikingsStock indexes drifted to a mixed finish on Wall Street Thursday, as some heavyweight technology and communications sector stocks offset gains elsewhere in the market. The S&P 500 fell less than 0.1% after spending the day wavering between small gains and losses. The tiny loss ended the benchmark index's three-day winning streak. The Dow Jones Industrial Average added 0.1%, and the Nasdaq composite fell 0.1%. Trading volume was lighter than usual as U.S. markets reopened following the Christmas holiday. Semiconductor giant Nvidia, whose enormous valuation gives it an outsize influence on indexes, slipped 0.2%. Meta Platforms fell 0.7%, and Amazon and Netflix each fell 0.9%. Tesla was among the biggest decliners in the S&P 500, finishing 1.8% lower. Some tech companies fared better. Chip company Broadcom rose 2.4%, Micron Technology added 0.6% and Adobe gained 0.5%. Health care stocks were a bright spot. CVS Health rose 1.5% and Walgreens Boots Alliance added 5.3% for the biggest gain among S&P 500 stocks. Several retailers also gained ground. Target rose 3%, Ross Stores added 2.3%, Best Buy rose 2.9% and Dollar Tree gained 3.8%. Traders are watching to see whether retailers have a strong holiday season. The day after Christmas traditionally ranks among the top 10 biggest shopping days of the year, as consumers go online or rush to stores to cash in gift cards and raid bargain bins. U.S.-listed shares in Honda and Nissan rose 4.1% and 16.4%, respectively. The Japanese automakers announced earlier this week that the two companies are in talks to combine. All told, the S&P 500 fell 2.45 points to 6,037.59. The Dow added 28.77 points to 43,325.80. The Nasdaq fell 10.77 points to close at 20,020.36. Wall Street got a labor market update. U.S. applications for unemployment benefits held steady last week , though continuing claims rose to the highest level in three years, the Labor Department reported. Treasury yields mostly fell in the bond market. The yield on the 10-year Treasury slipped to 4.58% from 4.59% late Tuesday. Major European markets were closed, as well as Hong Kong, Australia, New Zealand and Indonesia. Trading was expected to be subdued this week with a thin slate of economic data on the calendar. Still, U.S. markets have historically gotten a boost at year’s end despite lower trading volumes. The last five trading days of each year, plus the first two in the new year, have brought an average gain of 1.3% since 1950. So far this month, the U.S. stock market has lost some of its gains since President-elect Donald Trump’s win on Election Day, which raised hopes for faster economic growth and more lax regulations that would boost corporate profits. Worries have risen that Trump’s preference for tariffs and other policies could lead to higher inflation , a bigger U.S. government debt and difficulties for global trade. Even so, the U.S. market remains on pace to deliver strong returns for 2024. The benchmark S&P 500 is up 26.6% so far this year and remains near its most recent all-time high it set earlier this month — its latest of 57 record highs this year. Wall Street has several economic reports to look forward to next week, including updates on pending home sales and home prices, a report on U.S. construction spending and snapshots of manufacturing activity. AP Business Writers Elaine Kurtenbach and Matt Ott contributed.

Among the Myriad products highlighted in the company’s SABCS exhibit are: MyRisk® Hereditary Cancer Test evaluates 48 genes to help healthcare providers identify their patients’ risk of developing 11 different types of hereditary cancer. MyRisk’s clear, actionable results are the foundation for personalized care plans to help patients make confident, informed decisions about medical management. MyRisk with RiskScore® provides unaffected patients with a comprehensive, personalized assessment of the five-year risk and remaining lifetime risk of developing breast cancer. Precise Tumor® Molecular Profile Test is a pan-cancer solid tumor comprehensive genomic profiling test that helps clinicians with straightforward interpretations, prioritization of therapies, and the next steps specific to each patient’s genomic result. MyChoice® CDx is one of the most comprehensive homologous recombination deficiency (HRD) tests available, enabling physicians to identify patients with tumors that have lost the ability to repair double-stranded DNA breaks, resulting in increased susceptibility to DNA-damaging drugs such as platinum drugs or PARP inhibitors. The MyChoice test comprises tumor sequencing of the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes and a composite of three proprietary technologies (loss of heterozygosity, telomeric allelic imbalance and large-scale state transitions). EndoPredict® Breast Cancer Prognostic Test is for patients with ER+ , HER2- , node negative or node positive breast cancer. The test provides three individualized results used to help determine the most appropriate breast cancer treatment. Antitrust enforcement may lighten under TrumpA U.S.-made-and-supplied Terminal High-Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) missile defense battery was reportedly used on Friday morning against a ballistic missile fired by Iranian-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen at Israel. The THAAD battery arrived in Israel in October. The move was hailed at the time as a step forward in U.S.-Israeli military cooperation, even in the context of difficult relations between the governments of U.S. President Joe Biden and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Reuters reported : An advanced U.S. military anti-missile system was used in Israel to try to intercept a projectile for the first time since President Joe Biden placed the system in Israel in October, a source familiar with the matter told Reuters on Friday. The THAAD, or Terminal High Altitude Area Defense system, was used to try to intercept a projectile from Yemen sometime during the last 24 hours, and an analysis would determine its success, said the source who spoke on condition of anonymity. ... In October, Biden placed the THAAD system, built by Lockheed Martin , in Israel along with about 100 U.S. soldiers to help defend the country. THAAD is a critical part of the U.S. military’s layered air defense systems and added to Israel’s already formidable anti-missile defenses. However, critics also noted that increasingly direct U.S. involvement Israel’s defense could be exploited by an unfriendly administration, as Biden attempted to do when he withheld certain munitions from Israel in protest at Israel’s decision to enter the city of Rafah in southern Gaza. The move also placed U.S. soldiers at risk in the war zone, adding to the possibility of further U.S. involvement. Joel B.
