PM Modi to offer 5 million property cards under SVAMITVA schemeLaid ★★★1⁄2 Binge All credit to Marieke Hardy and Kirsty Fisher, who created the original Laid for the ABC 13 years ago. Their black comedy, about a young woman who discovers that all her former lovers are dying in strange circumstances, was such an inventive concept and sturdy platform that this American remake has no problem being a vivacious farce while bringing a few new kinks to the table. The Americans have no use for the phrase “dead root”, but the dual meaning remains applicable. Zosia Mamet (left) and Stephanie Hsu in the American remake of Laid. Credit: James Dittiger/Peacock New creators Nahnatchka Khan ( Fresh off the Boat ) and Sally Bradford McKenna ( Don’t Trust the B---- in Apartment 23 ) launch straight into the carnal chaos, as 33-year-old professional party planner Ruby (Stephanie Hsu) realises that she has a literal body count of former lovers, starting with a college boyfriend, quickly followed by another college ex on the ride home from the funeral. Ruby and her best friend and flatmate, AJ (Zosia Mamet), are shocked, distracted – they have fertile minds – and then rattled. Lists are soon compiled. Laid could be a horror film, an amalgam of It Follows and the Final Destination franchise, but it uses blithe humour to create a mordant momentum. With Ruby and AJ’s daffy exchanges and historic score-keeping as the ice-breaker, it keeps disbelief suspended and cunningly reverses the grief so that Ruby can wonder if this is all a sign that she’ll never find the perfect man, despite going on enough dates to have PTSD. A hunky new client, Isaac (Tommy Martinez), is just added temptation. “I am showing up and doing the work,” Ruby tells one of her disbelieving exes, but part of Laid ’s appeal is that despite her mouthing self-improvement platitudes she might just be a horrible person. The storytelling knows how to profit from that. Given half a chance, Ruby and AJ, a true crime devotee who finally gets to make her own whiteboard, have delirious screwball exchanges that keep wandering into idiosyncratic diversions and questionable monikers. One former hook-up does not take kindly to merely being identified as “Green Day/Sum 41 T-shirt guy”. Zosia Mamet as AJ, Michael Angarano as Richie, and Stephanie Hsu as Ruby in the US remake of Laid. Credit: James Dittiger/Peacock The second Australian season of Laid got into some real metaphysical mayhem, but the American plotting leans into sex-positive but karmically negative detective work. “My vagina is killing people,” Ruby concedes, and Hsu is a dirtbag-adjacent delight in the role. The Everything Everywhere All at Once breakthrough star, teamed with Girls ever-present Mamet, has a way of taking patter a step too far, and then letting the implications sink in before changing course. A little filthy, quite frank – Laid kept making me laugh in unexpected ways. Taron Egerton in Carry-On. Credit: Netflix Carry-On ★★★ Netflix A holiday season thriller set on December 24 at Los Angeles airport, Carry-On does everything a decent Hollywood genre movie should: concise on the plotting, tense when time gets tight, and a showcase for star Taron Egerton, who gets to clench his jaw, test his character’s moral depth, and run as if he’s a candidate for Tom Cruise’s crown. Is competency a compliment? It shouldn’t be, but Netflix’s original movies have been spotty this year. Rocketman star Egerton plays Ethan Kopek, who mans a metal detector at the airport and is coasting through life, despite the encouragement of his pregnant girlfriend and airline staffer, Nora Parisi (Sofia Carson). When Ethan gets an unexpected shot on a baggage scanner he becomes the target of an anonymous interloper, played with quiet disdain by Jason Bateman, who tells him via earpiece that Nora will be killed unless he lets a suspicious bag through. Sounding like a malicious career coach, Bateman’s operative coaxes and chides Ethan – just be your usual apathetic self. Naturally, Ethan can’t stomach potential harm to others, so he rebels. Spanish filmmaker Jaume Collet-Serra, who specialised in 2010s Liam Neeson crime dramas, cleanly escalates the action, placing Carry-On in the lineage of previous LA transportation thrillers such as Speed and Collateral . Bonus points for choreographing a fight scene to Wham’s Last Christmas . Patrick Gibson, left, as the young Dexter in Dexter: Original Sin. Credit: Paramount+ Dexter: Original Sin Paramount+ Turns out there’s still blood – just a few drops – to be squeezed from everyone’s favourite vigilante serial killer. Set in 1991, this prequel stars Patrick Gibson ( The OA ) as a 20-year-old Dexter Morgan, newly interned as a forensics technician with the Miami Police Department, even as his homicidal urges are being channelled by his father, Harry (Christian Slater). The original Dexter, Michael C. Hall, supplies flashback narration, but it’s worth noting that this era was often referenced by the original series. Still, it’s great to see Buffy ’s Sarah Michelle Gellar in a supporting role. Social Studies Disney+ With The Queen of Versailles and Generation Wealth , the American documentary filmmaker Lauren Greenfield provided a telling vision of how money is the lifeblood of her homeland. Her new five-part series follows a group of Los Angeles teenagers over a year, details how social media influences their adolescent experiences. For this generation born into digital platforms, the accumulated impact is often worrying and occasionally terrifying. Even with subjects from a different country, this is still deeply relevant to an Australian audience. Kelly Jones (Scarlett Johansson) and Cole Davis (Channing Tatum) in Fly Me to the Moon. Credit: Apple TV+ Fly Me to the Moon Apple TV+ Cinema audiences did not rush to see this romantic-comedy, which stars Scarlett Johansson and Channing Tatum as NASA adversaries turned allies in the lead-up to the 1969 moon landing, when it debuted in July, but it deserves a second chance on streaming. Fans of the genre will appreciate the chemistry between the stars, and the skill with which the plot connects them personally and tests them professionally. Directed by prolific television creator Greg Berlanti ( You , The Flash ), the film gathers in diverse elements, and just enough of them take flight. Pantheon Amazon I’m late to this adult animated science-fiction drama, which AMC+ debuted in 2023 and Amazon Prime thankfully picked up for a recent second season, but I am enjoying its knotty concepts, high-tech global stakes, and defiant young characters forging unlikely bonds. Voice work from the likes of Paul Dano, Taylor Schilling and Aaron Eckhart anchors a multi-pronged plot that revolves around “Uploaded Intelligence” – that is, your consciousness on the cloud. Unsurprisingly, the technology is not exactly being deployed for altruistic purposes. Kudos to the animation studio Titmouse: the visual aesthetic has a classical elegance. MAPUTO, Mozambique (AP) — Violence that engulfed Mozambique after the country's highest court confirmed ruling Frelimo party presidential candidate Daniel Chapo as the winner of disputed Oct. 9 elections killed at least 21 people, including two police officers, authorities said Tuesday. Mozambique Interior Minister Pascoal Ronda told a news conference in Maputo late Tuesday that a wave of violence and looting was sparked by the court's announcement a day earlier. He said it was led by mostly youthful supporters of losing candidate Venancio Mondlane, who received 24% of the vote, second to Chapo, who got 65%. “From the preliminary survey, in the last 24 hours, 236 acts of violence were recorded throughout the national territory that resulted in 21 deaths, of which two members of the Police of the Republic of Mozambique also died," Ronda said. He said 13 civilians and 12 police were injured. Ronda said 25 vehicles were set on fire, including two police vehicles. He added that 11 police subunits and a penitentiary were attacked and vandalized and 86 inmates were freed. Tensions were high in the country ahead of the The Constitutional Council ruling on Monday and violent protests started immediately after the announcement was made. Footage circulating on various social media platforms showed protesters burning and looting shops in the capital Maputo and the city of Beira, where some city officials were reported to have fled the city. Mondlane has called for a “shutdown” starting Friday but violence in the country has already escalated and the situation remained tense in the capital on Tuesday night following a day of violence and looting by protesters. The country of 34 million people has been on edge since the Oct. 9 general elections . Mondlane’s supporters, mostly hundreds of thousands of young people, have since taken to the streets, and have been met by gunfire from security forces. This brings to more than 150 the number of people who have died from post-election violence since the initial results were announced by the country's electoral body.

Elephant plans need public inputLondon: For all the rousing revelry and festive fizz that Christmas Day can bring, for some it only ramps up the confusion and anxiety. Older relatives may find it more of a slog to host than they are used to; if they are the guests, a lively new setting can compound the feelings of bewilderment and grumpiness. But when do signs of stress actually signify something more serious? Elizabeth Leonard, 58, recalls how a few years ago, her previously capable, cheerful mother, then aged 71, had an uncharacteristic outburst a few days before Christmas – picking a fight when normally she would do anything to avoid confrontation. On Christmas Day itself she said she couldn’t cook the turkey because there was something wrong with the oven. Elizabeth took over the cooking and found it was working perfectly. It marked the beginning of a long road to accepting that there might be something wrong, followed eventually by a diagnosis of dementia. A Christmas meal disaster could be a clue. Credit: Getty Images/iStockphoto “It’s a time for making memories, but it’s often during Christmas that we realise that something isn’t quite right with someone,” says Simon Wheeler, a senior knowledge officer at the Alzheimer’s Society. “At first it may seem like a momentary lapse – perhaps just a sign of getting old – but after a while you start to become concerned.” Different types of dementia can cause varying symptoms – from memory loss to difficulty with everyday tasks – that can often be picked up on in a social setting. The most common kind of dementia is Alzheimer’s (early symptoms include confusion and short-term memory problems), followed by vascular dementia (problems with planning and concentration) and Lewy bodies dementia (this includes Parkinson’s dementia, difficulty focusing and delusions). Some symptoms, such as memory loss, are common to many dementias – especially in the early stages. Here’s what to look out for and what to do if you’re worried about a relative this Christmas. Forgetfulness Forgetfulness, as a symptom of dementia, generally applies to short-term memory. “People might be able to sit there and talk about Christmas 10 years ago and remember all the details,” says Angelo Makri, also a senior knowledge officer at the Alzheimer’s Society. “But if you ask them what they did yesterday and they can’t answer, that’s where you know [there may be a problem]“, as well as forgetting people’s names, or their relationship with someone; for example a nephew or niece that they haven’t seen for a year. Of course, as we get older, it is normal to experience an element of memory lapse – so when should you worry? “It will be things that are out of character for that person. With dementia, it is progressive and so can affect daily living. “The person that forgets to put the turkey in the oven, or burns the turkey, may be forgetting to put the oven on for dinner every day.” Repeating questions “As with memory loss, this is quite consistent across all types of dementia and it can happen quite early,” says Makri. “Someone might ask a question over and over again, and it gets to a point where you realise they’re not retaining this information. It’s quite upsetting to witness.” Wheeler adds: “The first noticeable sign of Alzheimer’s disease is typically failing episodic memory. This is when a person has trouble encoding new memories of events and is caused by damage to regions of the brain called the hippocampus and the entorhinal cortex. “It’s declining episodic memory that causes the ‘saying the same thing, over and over’ symptom because the person doesn’t recall having said it previously. They never stored the memory in the first place so it doesn’t inform their future thoughts and actions.” Difficulties in carrying out old family traditions may hint at difficulties with daily tasks. Credit: Getty Images Difficulty carrying out familiar daily tasks While a complex matter like making a whole Christmas dinner would be enough to confuse a lot of us, there may be a problem if someone has difficulty carrying out one familiar job. “For example, if the same person always does the stuffing every year and then they forget to bring the ingredients, or they forget the process of how to do it. People will begin to have difficulty remembering the process of something, or planning, or concentrating.” Difficulty with tech “Confusion with technology is not, of course, specific to people living with dementia,” says Wheeler. “However, people with dementia can – and do – struggle with technology. “As their condition deteriorates over time, their brain will increasingly struggle to process information and think clearly, meaning that technologies that were once easy to use and navigate, for example a mobile phone or a laptop, may become increasingly difficult to use.” Time spent at end-of-year celebrations can bring comfort to the elderly and also a greater understanding of where they are at. Credit: Tribune Difficulty following a conversation “People can have difficulty finding the right word, or just following the thread of a conversation.” says Makri. “They might take longer to process the information they’ve heard, or they might just not be communicating very much. Sometimes they will become a bit withdrawn. They retreat slightly because, actually, they can’t follow the thread of the conversation any more.” Wheeler adds that although people with vascular dementia may not have problems with memory at first, in the context of a conversation they may easily lose the thread, either because they get distracted, they get overwhelmed by too much information, or because their working memory – the ability to keep a thought in your head for a few seconds or more – isn’t working as well as it used to. Spatial and temporal awareness This can be a symptom of all types of dementia. “Sometimes people might be confused about the time or the place,” says Makri. “They might not realise whose house they’re in, or not remember where the loo is. They might know it’s Christmas because they’re sitting at a Christmas table with a turkey in front of them, but they might not remember what year it is.” Difficulty controlling emotions The key is whether their behaviour is out of character. “If this is someone who’s always got really angry or anxious about politics, then you might not worry. But if this is someone who doesn’t normally react this way at that point, if they’re suddenly having mood swings and having difficulty controlling their emotions, then this might be an early sign [of some forms of dementia].” People with vascular dementia in particular tend to be more prone to mood problems as well as fatigue, and difficulty concentrating. Inappropriate behaviour This is more of a problem with frontotemporal dementia, a less common type of dementia that involves degeneration in the frontal or temporal lobes of the brain. Early symptoms include changes in personality and behaviour, and/or language difficulties. “You may find a person becomes less inhibited; they might suddenly start saying or doing inappropriate things,” says Makri. Being suddenly suspicious Although this isn’t present with Alzheimer’s, vascular or many other types of dementia, Lewy body dementia – a broad term which includes ‘dementia with Lewy bodies’ and Parkinson’s dementia – can cause delusional beliefs or hallucinations. “Having incorrect beliefs could potentially be an early symptom,” Makri explains. “At that point it’s generally quite mild, but certainly saying something like ‘the neighbours keep having a go at me’, or having a suspicion that the neighbours are talking about them,” could be a sign that something is amiss. What should you do next? Firstly, how much should you worry? “Many of the early symptoms can be caused by other things,” says Makri. “We always say you can’t make a diagnosis at the dinner table. But if someone is presenting with a lot of these symptoms it is a good idea for them to speak to the GP.” The GP will generally carry out tests to rule out other causes, including thyroid deficiencies, urinary tract infection (UTIs) and vitamin B12 deficiency, which can all cause confusion. But how to broach the topic sensitively? Makri suggests that, after speaking to other people who were present, to nominate one close family member to bring this up with the person in question. It’s also helpful to keep notes of the symptoms. MRI brain scans showing different dementia types. Credit: Boston University Ideally, the person themselves will go to the GP, who may then follow up with a referral to a memory clinic and possibly a brain scan. If the person is in denial – which can itself be a part of dementia – a family member can ring the GP and pass on their concerns, and while the GP won’t be able to comment because of patient confidentiality, they may be able to follow up with the patient. Newborn injured after home invasionThe performance of the Indian stock market in 2024 has been notably positive, with significant gains across major indices. On the benchmark front, both Nifty and Sensex, edged higher for the ninth consecutive calendar year and have surged ~9% so far. This upward trend reflects a broader market rally, with both indices consistently reaching new highs, and the Nifty crossing multiple milestones, from 22,000 to 26,000, in a relatively short period. However, in the second half of the year, the market faced challenges such as weak corporate earnings, FII outflows, elevated inflation, and sluggish GDP growth. Despite these headwinds, steady buying by DIIs and strong participation from retail investors has supported the markets.

I encourage you to ignore one-year predictions for the stock markets. Jorgen Vik If you’re looking in such a direction, this is the time of year financial institutions and journals present their predictions for next year. One short year, that’s it. I think this is silly. There’s just too much randomness over only 12 months. Instead, I think it makes much more sense to look five years out. The direction of investments tends to be more predictable the further out you look. So, here’s my point: Try to figure out how much you’ll draw from your principal over the next five years. Then, whatever amount that is, place it in something stable like U.S. government bonds or certificates of deposit, or CDs. Now, the rest of your portfolio can be placed in a diversified stock portfolio. This way, if the stock market tumbles next year, you’ll have a buffer to draw from and your stock investments will have time to recover before you may need to sell. Will prices go up or down in 2025? Honestly, nobody knows. Not a single person. It’s the future. It’s unknowable. The beauty of a five-year buffer is that you can stop paying attention to what people say about this year or next, and instead pay attention to what you want to do with your time. Read. Travel. Spend time with loved ones. Happy 2025. And 2026, 2027, 2028 and 2029. Happy new year, and good luck. Jorgen Vik is a certified financial planner and partner with SKV Group LLC.
