Ottawa, Nov 22 (AP) One of the most prominent figures from Canada's trucker protests against COVID-19 restrictions in 2022 has been found guilty on five counts including mischief and disobeying a court order. A judge ruled on Friday that Pat King was guilty on one count each of mischief, counseling others to commit mischief and counselling others to obstruct police. He was also found guilty on two counts of disobeying a court order. He could face up to 10 years in prison. Hundreds, sometimes thousands, of protesters clogged the streets of the capital, Ottawa, and besieged Parliament Hill for three weeks in early 2022, demonstrating against vaccine mandates for truckers and other precautions and condemning Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's Liberal government. Members of the self-styled Freedom Convoy also blockaded U.S.-Canada border crossings in protest. The prosecution alleged King was a protest leader who was instrumental to the disruption in Ottawa. The prosecution alleged King coordinated the repeated bouts of honking, ordering the protesters to lay on the horn every 30 minutes for 10 minutes at a time, and told people to “hold the line” when he was aware that police and the city had asked the truckers to leave. The prosecution's case relied mainly on King's own videos, which he posted to social media throughout the protest to document the demonstration and communicate with those taking part. King's lawyers argued that he was peacefully protesting and was not one of the demonstration's leaders. King was found not guilty on three counts of intimidation and one count of obstructing police himself. The truckers' convoy gridlocked downtown streets around Parliament Hill, with area residents complaining about the fumes from diesel engines running non-stop, and unrelenting noise from constant the honking of horns and music from parties. Trudeau's government ultimately invoked the Emergencies Act to try and bring an end to the protests. Ottawa Police brought in hundreds of officers from forces across Canada. The protests were first aimed at a COVID-19 vaccine mandate for cross-border truckers. They eventually encompassed fury over COVID-19 restrictions and dislike of Trudeau, reflecting the spread of disinformation in Canada and simmering populist and right-wing anger. The Freedom Convoy shook Canada's reputation for civility, inspired convoys in France, New Zealand and the Netherlands and interrupted economic trade. For almost a week the busiest US-Canada border crossing between Windsor, Ontario, and Detroit was blocked. It carries more than 25 per cent of trade between the countries, who are each other's largest trading partners. Cerebral palsy (CP) is a neurodevelopmental disorder affecting movement and posture that begins in early childhood development. It is the most common cause of motor disability in children, affecting about one in 345 children in the United States. 1-2 It may happen as a result of lack of oxygen during or around birth, stroke, infection, a problem with metabolism or other problems that cause injury or affect the development of parts of the brain involved in movement control in the first few years of life. 3 CP is a permanent condition, affecting a person for their entire life. People living with CP typically have motor problems, which may include spasticity (abnormal muscle tightness), dyskinesia (uncontrolled movements) or ataxia (poor muscle control), and many people have a mix of these motor disorders. 4 Dyskinesia due to CP (DCP) is one of the most disabling forms of CP and impacts approximately 10% to 20% of people living with CP. 5-6 According to the Cerebral Palsy Foundation (CPF), the combination of irregular and unpredictable movements (chorea) and twisting and repeating movements (dystonia) often disrupt activities and cause significant functional impairment, including the ability to maintain balance, walk or fine motor control. 7 Heather Riordan, M.D., Neurologist and Movement Disorders Specialist, Director of the Phelps Center for Cerebral Palsy at the Kennedy Krieger Institute, discusses the symptoms of chorea and impact on patients in a video shared on the CPF website here . About 30% of people with DCP are affected mostly by these involuntary and irregular movements (chorea), while dystonia is the predominant motor finding in the remaining 70%. 8 However, it is common for both chorea and dystonia movements to be present together. 6 For people living with DCP, these movements can occur in any region of the body, including the arms and legs, torso and face and may vary in severity. They are often triggered or made worse by stimulation or stress. Because dyskinesia can occur at rest and/or when actively using the body, the problems with movement are very burdensome in day-to-day living, with discomfort and pain affecting the quality of life for people and their caregivers. 9 Jen Lyman, mom to a son with DCP, highlights how dyskinesia makes communicating more difficult. "The most difficult thing about dyskinesia is watching my son struggle to do things that he wants to do, but the extra movements get in the way...special things, such as using a touch screen to video chat with his grandmother, are nearly impossible despite his best efforts to use his hands and fingers. Something so simple, yet so special for him should be effortless." DCP has a wide-ranging impact on the individual, including lifelong challenges with movement, a higher risk of other medical issues, a higher rate of mental health challenges and difficulties with communication. 10-12 "Those of us who have the privilege to serve patients with dyskinetic, hyperkinetic or mixed cerebral palsy see the functional impact of this very challenging type of tone every day," said Susan Biffl, M.D., Rehabilitation Medicine Specialist at Rady Children's Hospital-San Diego and Assistant Professor at UC San Diego School of Medicine. "Patients face challenges with self-care, independence, mobility, communication, fine motor skills that affect occupational and recreational activities, swallowing, social interactions and even sleep. As this tone is variable, it is much more challenging to treat than more consistent tone issues, such as spasticity." Treatment Options There are currently no Food and Drug Administration-approved treatments for DCP. Dystonia and chorea are often managed separately as they respond differently to various treatments, which can make treatment challenging. 3 Most drugs being investigated for DCP have focused on dystonia, and more research is needed to determine potential treatments for chorea. New treatment options are needed to help manage these movement disorders and improve daily function and quality of life for those affected. "After 20 years of caring for individuals with cerebral palsy, I continue to find those with dyskinetic cerebral palsy among the most challenging to treat, largely due to the limited effectiveness of available pharmacologic options," said Joyce Oleszek, M.D., Professor, Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, University of Colorado School of Medicine. "There is an urgent need for more robust evidence to support pharmacologic treatments for this condition, given its profound impact on function, comfort and quality of life." Ongoing Research Clinical studies are important in the development of treatment options, allowing researchers to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of new medicines. The data from clinical studies are used to determine if an investigational treatment can be approved for use to treat certain disorders. There are ongoing clinical studies evaluating potential treatments for DCP, including one for chorea. Neurocrine Biosciences is conducting the KINECT ® -DCP clinical study, a Phase 3, randomized, double-blind placebo-controlled study investigating the study drug, valbenazine, for the treatment of DCP. The clinical study is currently enrolling children, adolescents and adults six to 70 years of age who have been diagnosed with DCP. "The Cerebral Palsy Foundation is excited to partner with Neurocrine Biosciences on this study," said Rachel Byrne, Executive Director of the Cerebral Palsy Foundation. "We are proud to support strong research that can potentially bring meaningful change to the lives of those living with cerebral palsy." Technology entrepreneur Elon Musk has caused uproar after backing Germany’s far-right party in a major newspaper ahead of key parliamentary elections in the Western European country, leading to the resignation of the paper’s opinion editor in protest. Germany is to vote in an early election on February 23 after Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s three-party governing coalition collapsed last month in a dispute over how to revitalise the country’s stagnant economy. Mr Musk’s guest opinion piece for Welt am Sonntag – a sister publication of Politico owned by the Axel Springer Group – published in German over the weekend, was the second time this month that he has supported the Alternative for Germany, or AfD. “The Alternative for Germany (AfD) is the last spark of hope for this country,” he wrote in his translated commentary. He went on to say that the far-right party “can lead the country into a future where economic prosperity, cultural integrity and technological innovation are not just wishes, but reality”. The Tesla Motors chief executive also wrote that his investment in Germany gives him the right to comment on the country’s condition. The AfD is polling strongly, but its candidate for the top job, Alice Weidel, has no realistic chance of becoming chancellor because other parties refuse to work with the far-right party. Billionaire Mr Musk, an ally of US President-elect Donald Trump, challenged in his opinion piece the party’s public image. “The portrayal of the AfD as right-wing extremist is clearly false, considering that Alice Weidel, the party’s leader, has a same-sex partner from Sri Lanka! Does that sound like Hitler to you? Please!” Mr Musk’s commentary has led to a debate in German media over the boundaries of free speech, with the paper’s own opinion editor announcing her resignation, pointedly on Mr Musk’s social media platform, X. Eva Marie Kogel wrote: “I always enjoyed leading the opinion section of WELT and WAMS. Today an article by Elon Musk appeared in Welt am Sonntag. I handed in my resignation yesterday after it went to print.” A critical article by the future editor-in-chief of the Welt group, Jan Philipp Burgard, accompanied Mr Musk’s opinion piece. “Musk’s diagnosis is correct, but his therapeutic approach, that only the AfD can save Germany, is fatally wrong,” he wrote. Responding to a request for comment from the German Press Agency, dpa, the current editor-in-chief of the Welt group, Ulf Poschardt, and Mr Burgard – who is due to take over on January 1 – said in a joint statement that the discussion over Mr Musk’s piece was “very insightful. Democracy and journalism thrive on freedom of expression.” “This will continue to determine the compass of the ‘world’ in the future. We will develop ‘Die Welt’ even more decisively as a forum for such debates,” they wrote to dpa.
It's a numbers game: Biden, 82, and Trump, 78, move up as oldest living presidents after Jimmy Carter's death at 100 By NIKKI SCHWAB, CHIEF CAMPAIGN CORRESPONDENT FOR DAILYMAIL.COM Published: 23:40 GMT, 29 December 2024 | Updated: 23:40 GMT, 29 December 2024 e-mail View comments President Joe Biden is now the country's oldest living president with Sunday's death of 100-year-old President Jimmy Carter. Despite Biden presently being in office, the 82-year-old was born before all the country's other living presidents: Bill Clinton , George W. Bush, Barack Obama and Donald Trump . Trump, 78, is the second oldest living president. He'll be sworn-in again on January 20, 2025. Bush and Clinton are also 78 and were born in the months following Trump. Bush was born on July 6, 1946 and Clinton was born on August 19, 1946, compared to Trump, who was born that year on Flag Day, June 14. The youngest former president is Obama, who turned 63 on August 4. Carter set a record as the longest-living president in American history - the only former president to turn 100 years old, which he did so on October 1. President Joe Biden, 82, is the country's oldest living president, despite there being four men who were in office before him that are still alive after Sunday's death of 100-year-old Jimmy Carter The four other living presidents are younger than Biden including former President Donald Trump (front row, left), George W. Bush (right, standing), Barack Obama (third from left) and Bill Clinton (third from right) He outlived two presidents who served after him - President Ronald Reagan and President George H.W. Bush, the father of Bush 43. Carter was sworn-in in 1977 at age 52. Sixteen American presidents were younger than Carter at the time of their inaugurations - including Clinton and Obama decades later. Reagan ousted Carter from the White House after just one term at the age of 69, turning 70 two weeks later. He had to contend with concerns over his age when he ran for reelection in 1984. During a debate against Democrat Walter Mondale, Reagan was asked if he was too old to be president. Reagan would be 73 when he started a second term. 'I will not make age an issue of this campaign. I am not going to exploit, for political purposes, my opponent's youth and inexperience,' the Republican famously quipped. Presidents Donald Trump (left), Barack Obama (third from left) and Bill Clinton (fourth from right) are all younger than President Joe Biden, despite holding office years before the 82-year-old commander-in-chief Reagan lived to be 93, passing away on June 5, 2004. Carter also outlived Bush 41 - Reagan's Republican vice president who was elected in 1988 after Reagan served two terms. The senior Bush died at the age of 94 on November 30, 2018. When Biden was sworn-in on January 20, 2021, he was 78 years and 61 days old - which was older than Reagan when Reagan left office. And when Trump is sworn-in next month, he'll be 78 years and 220 days old - meaning he'll leave office even older than Biden in 2029. Gamification is rapidly reshaping how people consume information and engage with the world. It uses strategies such as clear goals, instant rewards and engaging visuals to make everyday tasks more enjoyable, often in a digital setting. The COVID-19 pandemic nudged consumers to embrace no-contact, instant gratification experiences in an increasingly digital world. Businesses found that gamification attracts new customers while keeping the existing ones engaged. As evidenced by the meteoric rise of the Robinhood investment app , even trading platforms haven’t been able to escape the pull of gamification. While trading gamification attracts new and younger investors to financial markets, a key question arises: do digital engagement strategies shape investor behaviour? Flashy features and poor financial decisions In recent years, fierce competition among online brokers has pushed them to stand out with features beyond lower fees. To boost trading activity, many brokers have implemented gamified features ranging from vibrant colours and celebratory animations, to social ranking boards and frequent price alerts. My recent research shows that these strategies are particularly effective for new investors with lower financial literacy. While it’s effective at attracting users, gamification can lead inexperienced traders to make poor decisions by magnifying their behavioural biases. My co-researchers and I studied the effect of gamification on retail traders’ behaviour using a randomized online experiment. The results echo the widespread concerns that gamification fuels investors’ competitive instincts and their urge to “hit big.” Turning trading into a casino-like experience encourages reckless decision-making. Infamous long-term investor Warren Buffett has also expressed concerns about the potential negative impact of “instant gratification” on investor behaviour. He believes that “too many modern investors have become entranced by speculative investing” and are “simply buying stocks that are trendy.” While it’s important to introduce the younger generation to financial markets , Buffett’s warning resonates at a deeper level. Is the increasingly gamified trading environment equipping new investors with the skills and confidence to build a strong financial future, or is it designed to exploit their weaknesses? And ultimately, how can technology be leveraged to build a healthier, more sustainable economy? Who benefits from financial literacy? My co-researchers and I argue that both retail investors and intermediaries ultimately benefit from boosting financial literacy from an early age — that is, before plunging into the wild waters of financial markets. Ultimately, the responsibility lies with individual investors to take the initiative to understand the fundamentals of financial markets and risk management. By seeking out knowledge before entering markets, they can reduce their risk and become aware of their biases and blind spots. Traders who don’t prioritize their education may end up learning the reality of markets the hard way — often through losses in post-mortem reflection. At the same time, brokerages and trading platforms have both a profit-driven and an ethical stake in promoting financial literacy. Informed users are more likely to become loyal long-term customers who engage more deeply with platforms and trading responsibly over time. Financially literate traders benefit from gamification techniques like price notifications, which allow them to correct their mistakes faster. From an ethical standpoint, financial institutions must reflect on whether they would rather empower a new generation of investors or merely turn them into gamblers. Financial education is key School systems’ improved or renewed efforts to empower students to navigate the economy safely and productively have received significant attention in light of both post-pandemic and inflationary economic challenges . As students move up the education ladder, they could learn about more sophisticated financial products, such as leverage, derivatives or alternative investments. Read more: A back-to-school wish list for Ontario's 2025 high school financial literacy requirement However, the financial world is growing ever more complex with the inclusion of novel products such as cryptocurrencies and leveraged funds . Every investor faces — or will eventually face — unique financial challenges. The real question is: how can we improve investors’ financial literacy at scale without expecting everyone to earn the equivalent of a business degree? AI and the future of financial education This is where artificial intelligence (AI) comes in. AI is experiencing rapid growth and can adapt learning plans based on users’ existing knowledge, unique planning needs, learning pace and preferred engagement formats. This adaptability makes AI a powerful tool for creating learning opportunities for investors by catering to varying learning needs. Wide-scale collaboration among regulators, business educators and financial markets could lead to innovative programs using scalable, user-friendly tools such as chatbots. Such an approach would help improve financial literacy on a large scale and enable evidence-based policy by observing investor behaviour. Improving financial literacy is urgent. As a new generation of traders enters gamified investing, they risk losing their savings due to poor decisions, behavioural biases and excessive trading. Early losses can stunt a generation’s future wealth prospects and set them back years, if not decades. Only investors with strong critical thinking skills and self-control will progress from beginners to experienced traders and avoid falling prey to impulsive decisions. The Golden State Warriors travel to Houston on Wednesday night for a showdown with the Rockets in the quarterfinals of the 2024 NBA Cup . On Monday, he posted on X that he’d be opening a business in Williamsburg at 455 Merrimac Trail. “Grand opening is in a week or two!” The property is located in York County. However, as of Wednesday, the York County Commissioner of the Revenue’s office did not have a record of a business license for a music store associated with the address mentioned in Hinckley’s post. The property at 455 Merrimac Trail is a small strip mall owned by ESS Storage Acquisition Seventy Two LLC, a storage facility rental company based in Salt Lake City, Utah. Company representatives haven’t responded to calls about a rental agreement with Hinckley. In 1982, Hinckley was found not guilty by reason of insanity after shooting and wounding Reagan; three others including, James Brady, White House press secretary, were shot and wounded. Hinckley has lived in the area for years after a federal judge released him from St. Elizabeths Hospital, a psychiatric facility, in Washington, D.C., and allowed him to live with his mother in Williamsburg. Jo Ann Hinckley died in 2021 and Hinckley was released from court oversight in 2022. Hinckley launched a music career and last month posted on X that he’d “be doing a show” in Newport News on Feb. 1. Workers assemble 5G network components at JMA Wireless' new factory in Syracuse on July 28, 2022. (Rick Moriarty | rmoriarty@syracuse.com) Mark Weiner | mweiner@syracuse.com Washington – JMA Wireless plans to expand its research and manufacturing operations in Syracuse after winning a nearly $44 million federal grant from the CHIPS and Science Act, U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer said today. The expansion will initially lead to 30 new jobs, with the potential to grow significantly as JMA ramps up full production of its 5G wireless equipment, the company said. All told, JMA Wireless officials said the CHIPS Act grant will allow the company to invest $75 million to open a new production line and expand testing capabilities at its plant on Syracuse’s South Side, which opened in 2022. JMA is the only American-owned manufacturing plant that makes 5G wireless communications equipment used by cell phone companies like Verizon and AT&T. Schumer, D-N.Y., included in his CHIPS and Science Act a Wireless Innovation Fund to help U.S. companies compete with China and companies like Huawei in the development of 5G wireless networks. “We need the future of America’s 5G technology built in Central New York, not China,” Schumer said in a statement. “Investments like this show the federal government is serious about taking back the reins on critical technology like 5G and making sure the future of broadband and wireless technology is stamped ‘Made in America’ with JMA leading the way,” he said. JMA plans to use the federal money to accelerate production of its 5G open radio access network (ORAN) technology and locate it at their new Syracuse campus with their own testing laboratories. JMA said its goal is to produce and sell more than 12,000 state-of-the-art 5G ORAN radios per year made its Syracuse campus. The CHIPS and Science Act set aside $1.5 billion for the Wireless Innovation Fund, intended to boost U.S. technological leadership for the next generation of high-speed internet and strengthen U.S. supply chains. It’s a lesser-known section of the law, which set aside most of its $52 billion in funding to lure computer chip manufacturers back to the United States. Micron Technology earlier this week signed a deal with the federal government to receive $6.1 billion in CHIPS Act grants to build new chip plants in Central New York and Idaho. Micron will use about $4.6 billion of that funding to help build the first two of four manufacturing plants at White Pine Commerce Park off Route 31 in Clay. Micron said it would invest $100 billion in Clay over 20 years, leading to 9,000 direct and 40,000 spinoff jobs. JMA Wireless, founded in 2012, designs and manufactures 5G wireless platforms in Central New York. In 2022, the company opened the 5G component factory on the edge of downtown Syracuse in one of the city’s poorest, most neglected neighborhoods. JMA said the $50 million plant would initially employ about 200 people, with plans to expand into the neighborhood by creating a research and manufacturing campus in the coming years. In Onondaga County, JMA also operates a manufacturing plant in Clay that makes wireless equipment. The company has more than 500 local employees and 1,000 globally, with research and development offices in Colorado, Texas, Illinois, Virginia and Italy. In 2022, JMA Wireless bought the naming rights to Syracuse University’s Carrier Dome as part of a 10-year agreement. Got a tip, comment or story idea? The first commercial batch of made-in-Canada low-carbon aviation fuel sourced from non-food grade canola and tallow has been produced and quickly purchased. Fuel retailer Parkland Corp. said Tuesday it has successfully produced about 100,000 litres of the fuel at its refinery in Burnaby, B.C. “using existing infrastructure.” Parkland senior vice-president Ferio Pugliese said it means production can easily be scaled up, but only if Canada provides the necessary conditions to create an ecosystem around the nascent commodity and its adoption across the country. “We need to do more to make low-carbon air travel a reality,” Pugliese said during the announcement in Vancouver on Tuesday. “We need a long-term Canadian solution for low-carbon, sustainable aviation fuel.” While the potential for emission reduction is massive with production in Canada is also significantly more expensive, Pugliese said. He notes that similar low-carbon fuels used in vehicles, buses and ferries have about one-eighth of the carbon content when compared to traditional fuels. Pugliese said other countries such as the United States incentivize production and use of low-carbon jet fuel, creating the necessary ecosystem to support a local industry. “Currently, the Canadian aviation industry purchases low-carbon aviation (fuel) from other countries and imports it from across the globe into Canada. That makes little sense.” Parkland began trying to develop the fuel in 2017, and the entire batch of the first production run has already been bought by Air Canada. Pugliese said the purchase of the fuel by Air Canada completes a value chain within the country that shows local development, production, sale and use of low-carbon jet fuel can be achieved to the benefit of everyone — but only if the support from government is there. “Airlines need very practical solutions, and today, right here in B.C., Parkland has created a made-in-Canada solution to a global challenge,” he said. The comments echoed that of WestJet CEO Alexis von Hoensbroech, who in 2023 said the global push for decarbonizing commercial aviation by 2050 will cause spikes in airfares unless governments intervene. Part of the challenge, von Hoensbroech said, is that alternative energy sources such as electric or hydrogen aircraft remains a long way from reality, making the sector difficult to decarbonize. In February, a pair of industry groups, including the National Airlines Council of Canada, said the country needed incentives matching that of the United States to spark production of sustainable aviation fuels. Commercial aviation giant Airbus has said that low-carbon jet fuel can reduce carbon-dioxide emissions by about 80 per cent, and development is ongoing for planes to be able to run completely on it instead of needing to mix it with conventional fuels. But Airbus also said the ecosystem for the fuel is still “in its infancy,” with just 600 million litres produced last year, making up 0.2 per cent of all aviation fuel for 2023. “Appropriate regulatory mechanisms and inventive structures still need to be put in place, and even then, there are challenges associated with the limited availability of land and biowaste,” Airbus said of the technology on its website. Airbus has said it is increasing its own use of low-carbon fuels with a goal of reaching 30 per cent of its total fuel mix by 2030.Bowls miss out in 4 CFP teams in latest postseason twist
For whom the bells chimeChennai, Nov 24 (PTI) The AIADMK in Tamil Nadu on Sunday celebrated the birth centenary of former Chief Minister Janaki Ramachandran, wife of late party founder M G Ramachandran, here. Janaki was the first woman chief minister of Tamil Nadu, who headed the state briefly in January 1988 after the death of her husband and then CM Ramachandran, popularly addressed as MGR. AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami led the celebrations at a marriage hall in the city. Besides Palaniswami, scores of leaders and celebrities, including actor Rajinikanth and DMDK general secretary Premalatha Vijayakant paid rich tributes to the late Janaki. Palaniswami and Rajinikanth hailed Janaki for her efforts in uniting the party, which suffered a split post MGR's death in December 1987. A yesteryear actor, Janaki Ramachandran was sworn-in as CM of the state following MGR's death, even as the party had split into two factions. The respective factions were headed by Janaki and late CM J Jayalalithaa. However, in 1989, she buried her differences with Jayalalithaa and handed over the AIADMK's leadership to her. Recalling this episode, Rajinkanth in a video message played out at the venue said Janaki told Jayalalithaa that she was the one capable of taking forward the AIADMK and handed over the party to her and later kept away from politics. In his address, Palaniswami recalled the life and times of Janaki, pointing out that she had paired opposite Ramachandran in films including 'Marutha Nattu Ilavarasi.' She stood by her husband through different phases of life, including when he was shot at and injured by late actor M R Radha. The building housing the AIADMK headquarters, 'MGR Maaligai,' was donated by Janaki, he said. Though the party split after Ramachandran's death, and its popular Two Leaves symbol frozen, Janaki later reached out to Jayalalithaa, he said. "Janaki knew to whom the party should be handed over and did it accordingly and Amma (Jayalalithaa) had the capability," to lead the AIADMK, the former CM said. Stressing on the importance of the Two Leaves symbol, he said while the party suffered electoral failure post the split in its absence, it, however, bounced back with two by-poll wins later, after securing it even while being in the opposition. He said both MGR and Jayalalithaa faced many challenges from the then ruling DMK in leading the party but later took the AIADMK to ruling saddle with "massive public support," and that the party has cumulatively ruled Tamil Nadu for 31 years. Referring to the criticism about party's recent electoral defeats, he asked if the DMK did not go through a similar phase in 10 years, referring to the 2011-21 period when the AIADMK was in power. In fact, DMK had won only two seats in 1991 but came to power five years later, he pointed out. Palaniswami exuded confidence his party will emerge victorious in the next general elections, due in 2026 and urged his party workers to take forward the legacy of MGR and Jayalalithaa and do effective public service. Taking a dig at the ruling DMK, Palaniswami, the Leader of Opposition, dubbed it as a "family party." "It is (M) Karunanidhi's family party. Only that family members can become party chief and come to power. But in AIADMK, whoever works hard, is loyal to the party, any such person can become general secretary, MLA, minister and even chief minister," he said. He also asserted no effort to break the AIADMK will fructify.
