PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti — The United Nations raised the death toll of a recent massacre in which dozens of older people and Vodou religious leaders were killed by a gang in Haiti, and called on officials to bring the perpetrators to justice. The U.N. Integrated Office in Haiti said in a report published on Monday that between Dec. 6 and 11 more than 207 people were killed by the Wharf Jeremie gang. The gang took people from their homes and from a place of worship, interrogated them and then executed them with bullets and machetes. Earlier this month, human rights groups in Haiti had estimated that more than 100 people were killed in the massacre, but the new U.N. investigation doubles the number of victims. “We cannot pretend that nothing happened” said María Isabel Salvador, the U.N. secretary-general’s special representative in Haiti. “I call on the Haitian justice system to thoroughly investigate these horrific crimes and arrest and punish the perpetrators, as well as those who support them,” she said in a statement. Human rights groups in Haiti said the massacre began after the son of Micanor Altès, the leader of the Wharf Jeremie gang, died from an illness. The Cooperative for Peace and Development, a human rights group, said that according to information circulating in the community, Altès accused people in the neighborhood of causing his son’s illness. “He decided to cruelly punish all elderly people and (Vodou) practitioners who, in his imagination, would be capable of casting a bad spell on his son,” the group said in a statement released shortly after news of the massacre emerged. In Monday’s report, the United Nations said that people were tracked down in their homes and in a place of worship by Altès’ gang, where they were first interrogated and then taken to an execution site. The United Nations said that the gang tried to erase evidence of the killings by burning bodies, or by dismembering them and throwing them into the sea. The massacre is the latest humanitarian tragedy in Haiti, where gang violence has intensified since the nation’s president was killed in a 2021 coup attempt. Haiti has struggled to organize an election that will fill the power vacuum and restore democratic rule. The Caribbean nation is currently governed by a transitional council that includes representatives from the business community, civil society and political parties, but its government has no control over many areas of the capital city, and gangs are constantly fighting over ports, highways and neighborhoods. The scandal of China erecting illegal, secret police stations around the world to persecute dissidents erupted following the publication of a report by the human rights group Safeguard Defenders in September 2022. The report detailed how China used the Wuhan coronavirus pandemic as an excuse to open what it referred to as “service centers,” ostensibly intended to help Chinese citizens abroad renew their passports, licenses, and other legal documents. In reality, the “service centers” were hunting down prominent political dissidents, in some cases harassing their families or forcing them to repatriate into China’s draconian justice system. No evidence indicates that China informed the countries targeted – a long list including France, Spain, Brazil, Nigeria, and Canada, among others – of its law enforcement operations on their soil. Following the announcement of the 2023 indictments, Peace, the U.S. attorney, stated that, among the specific operations that the illegal police station was conducting was “helping locate a Chinese dissident living in the United States” to harass and silence them. The indictments against Chen and Lu in 2023 occurred alongside the Department of Justice announcing that it was pressing charges against another 44 people, many of them believed to be in China, working to “harass PRC dissidents” on social media and threaten an unnamed American telecommunications company into silencing dissidents by not letting them use their technology to hold virtual events on human rights. "With Kingmakers, we're obsessed with making everything interactable," creative director Ian Fisch says on Twitter , sharing a clip of a car crashing headlong into a wooden building. "If you drive a car full speed into a medieval tavern, well...." To be honest, I think an actual car would be a little worse for wear after careening headlong into a bunch of oak longs, but damn if the way that building crumbles doesn't look incredibly satisfying. That clip originates from a trailer released last week, confirming that Kingmakers is due to hit early access in the first quarter of 2025. The full trailer, which you can see below, also shows off numerous other examples of the destruction tech. We see a grenade launcher fell a castle arch, cutting off a gaggle of enemy soldiers, an RPG blow a hole in a fortified wall, and a floor destroyed to offer a better vantage point on the enemies sitting below. Once upon a time, fully destructible environments felt like they'd be the final frontier of video game technology, but these days it's mostly indie games with wild concepts like Kingmakers that are keeping the dream of destruction alive. Council voted 12-5 to approve the project at a packed meeting at City Hall. Owners of the NBA team hope to move in to 76 Place by 2031. However, opponents say the fight is far from over. Mayor Cherelle Parker, a Democrat who had championed the plan, said the entire city will benefit from what she called a “historic game-changing economic development project,” according to The Philadelphia Inquirer . Supporters hope the 18,500-seat arena can help revive a distressed retail corridor called Market East, which runs from City Hall to the Liberty Bell. The area has struggled for years despite several redevelopment efforts. The team owners, Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment, are eager to end their Wells Fargo Center lease with Comcast Spectacor in South Philadelphia. They have pushed for city approval by year’s end so they can meet their target opening date. They vowed not to ask the city for any construction funding, although they are free to seek state and federal funds. Instead of property taxes, they would pay about $6 million in annual Payments in Lieu of Taxes. Protesters who locked arms on the council floor and delayed the start of the Thursday’s meeting said they would continue their fight. “The mayor and City Council kowtowed to the billionaires’ artificial timeline,” said opponent Mohan Seshadri, a member of the No Arena Coalition who also serves as executive director of the Asian Pacific Islander Political Alliance. Arizona men’s golf standout Tiger Christensen announced on social media Thursday that he’s turning professional. Christensen, a senior from Hamburg, Germany, will begin his pro career in Europe after participating in the DP World Tour Qualifying School. Christensen reached the final stage of Q School and placed 58th at Infinitum Golf in Tarragona, Spain. The top 20 finishers and ties earn a tour card. Christensen currently ranks 27th in the World Amateur Golf Ranking . “Arizona has become a big part of my life in a way that I didn’t expect,” Christensen posted . “Coach Jim (Anderson) and Coach Matt (Walton) have done an amazing job these past two years, and I am going to miss teeing it up alongside my teammates. I have so many memories that I will remember forever. ...
