The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MoECC) recently launched its sectoral strategy for 2024-2030, under the theme Together towards a sustainable environment for a better future, as part of the third National Development Strategy, which represents the final phase of the Qatar National Vision 2030, where environmental development has been made one of its four pillars. Comprising the pillars of environment, sustainability and adaptation to climate changes, research and innovation, digital transformation, governance, as well as sustainable institutional development, the strategy represents a pivotal step toward achieving Qatar’s aspirations based on a whole-of-government approach, pertaining to securing the sustainability of economic and social growth. The Qatar National Vision 2030 emphasised that the intended sustainability cannot be achieved without an overarching environmental vision toward striking a balance between the development needs and conservation of natural resources whether on land, sea or air. The director of the Arab Centre for Research and Policy Studies’s Economic Studies Unit, Dr Hazim Rahahleh, said that by launching the strategy for environmental protection and addressing climate challenges for 2024-30, Qatar reiterates its commitment and response to the evolving global issues and challenges, affirming that the strategy falls within the development and humanitarian role the country is performing at regional and global levels. Researcher in the fields of food security and social and economic development at Qatar University’s Gulf Studies Centre, Farah al-Qawasmi, stated that the strategy launched by the MoECC for 2024-30 underscores that Qatar has adopted a whole-of-government approach in addressing climate change challenges and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The targets of the MoECC strategy include reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 25% by 2030, restoring 30% of environmentally impacted natural resources, protecting 30% of island and coastal areas, as well as preserving 17 species of endemic and endangered species. Associate professor of applied geography and geographic information systems (GIS) at Qatar University (QU), Dr Ammar Abulibdeh, said that Qatar, despite being an oil producer and one of the largest gas producers in the world, is striving to diversify energy sources and rely on renewable energy sources. Associate professor of GIS and remote sensing in the Applied Geography Programme at the QU, Dr Rana N Jawarneh, said that Qatar has many ambitious goals in terms of protecting the environment and adapting to climate challenges, which are evident in the many policies and plans made, as well as pioneering projects on the ground.LYNN — The Lynn Classical vs. Lynn English powderpuff game, an annual tradition in which senior girls compete in a two-hand-touch football game, delivered the theatrics on Sunday – and then some. The Rams escaped the Bulldogs, 20-19, in a thriller that came down to the very last play. With English trailing, 20-13, in the final minute, the girls in maroon nearly pulled it off. Jade Quero rushed for a 12-yard touchdown as time expired, but the extra-point attempt to tie was no good. The Classical faithful bounced up and down on the bleachers in celebration, and that was all she wrote on the Manning Field scoreboard. But truth be told, this one was back-and-forth from the beginning. Classical came out hot on its first drive, led by the explosive ground game of Keisha Perez. From there, Maegan Baker broke free and rushed for a touchdown down the right sideline. “This is something that I’ve thought about since freshman year,” Baker said. “It’s something I really look forward to and I’m really proud of myself and the rest of the team. I think they did really well.” Baker, who has committed to Marymount University (Virginia) to study and play flag football, said powderpuff is “a really good way to involve everyone. “Everyone I play with now, I wouldn’t have expected to be close with,” she said. “It’s a really good way to include everybody and get them out on the field.” English answered Classical’s early score with a touchdown of its own, courtesy of Yankarla Matias in the first quarter. “I had a lot of fun,” said Matias, who found the endzone twice on Sunday. “I was really excited, nervous, and I really wanted to make it down there (the endzone).” But Classical recaptured its lead in the second quarter as Perez spotted Nevaeh Eth for a touchdown through the air. The Rams led, 13-7, at halftime. Matias found the endzone again in the third quarter. This time, a 40-plus yard rush to tie the game, 13-13. But Baker did her thing again in the fourth, just barely squeezing into the endzone for a 7-yard rush. The point-after attempt was good (20-13). “I think we just needed to stay positive,” Baker said. “Our team has worked together a lot and we backed each other up.” Sunday made it three consecutive wins for the Rams. They won last year’s matchup, 34-18.
ISLAMABAD (AP) — Pakistani police arrested thousands of Imran Khan supporters ahead of a rally in the capital to demand the ex-premier’s release from prison, a security officer said Sunday. Khan has been behind bars for more than a year and has over 150 criminal cases against him. But he remains popular and his political party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf or PTI, says the cases are politically motivated. Shahid Nawaz, a security officer in eastern Punjab province, said police have arrested more than 4,000 Khan supporters. They include five parliamentarians. Pakistan has sealed off Islamabad with shipping containers and shut down major roads and highways connecting the city with PTI strongholds in Punjab and northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provinces. Tit-for-tat teargas shelling between the police and the PTI was reported on the highway bordering Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Earlier on Sunday, Pakistan suspended mobile and internet services “in areas with security concerns.” The government and Interior Ministry posted the announcement on the social media platform X, which is banned in Pakistan. They did not specify the areas, nor did they say how long the suspension would be in place. “Internet and mobile services will continue to operate as usual in the rest of the country,” the posts said. Meanwhile, telecom company Nayatel sent out emails offering customers “a reliable landline service” as a workaround in the areas suffering suspended cellphone service. Khan's supporters rely heavily on social media to demand his release and use messaging platforms like WhatsApp to share information, including details of events. PTI spokesperson Sheikh Waqas Akram said Khan's wife Bushra Bibi was traveling to Islamabad in a convoy led by the chief minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Ali Amin Gandapur. “She cannot leave the party workers on their own,” said Akram. There was a festive mood in Peshawar, with PTI members dancing, drumming and holding up pictures of Khan as cars set off for Islamabad. The government is imposing social media platform bans and targeting VPN services , according to internet advocacy group Netblocks. On Sunday, the group said live metrics showed problems with WhatsApp that were affecting media sharing on the app. The U.S. Embassy issued a security alert for Americans in the capital, encouraging them to avoid large gatherings and warning that even “peaceful gatherings can turn violent.” Last month, authorities suspended the cellphone service in Islamabad and Rawalpindi to thwart a pro-Khan rally. The shutdown disrupted communications and affected everyday services such as banking, ride-hailing and food delivery. The latest crackdown comes on the eve of a visit by Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko . Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi said authorities have sealed off Islamabad's Red Zone, which houses key government buildings and is the destination for Khan's supporters. “Anyone reaching it will be arrested,” Naqvi told a press conference. He said the security measures were in place to protect residents and property, blaming the PTI for inconveniencing people and businesses. He added that protesters were planning to take the same route as the Belarusian delegation, but that the government had headed off this scenario. Naqvi denied cellphone services were suspended and said only mobile data was affected. Associated Press writers Riaz Khan in Peshawar and Asim Tanveer in Multan contributed to this report.
GENEVA (AP) — Netflix has secured the U.S. broadcasting rights to the Women’s World Cup in 2027 and 2031 as the streaming giant continues its push into live sports. The deal announced Friday is the most significant FIFA has signed with a streaming service for a major tournament. The value was not given, though international competitions in women’s soccer have struggled to draw high-value offers. “Bringing this iconic tournament to Netflix isn’t just about streaming matches,” its chief content officer Bela Bajaria said in a statement. “It’s also about celebrating the players, the culture and the passion driving the global rise of women’s sport.” Netflix dipped into live sports last month with more than 60 million households watching a heavily hyped boxing match between retired heavyweight legend Mike Tyson and social media personality Jake Paul. Some viewers reported streaming problems , however. Netflix also will broadcast two NFL games on Christmas Day: the Kansas City Chiefs at the Pittsburgh Steelers and Baltimore Ravens at the Houston Texans. That’s part of a three-year deal announced in May. World Cups are typically broadcast on free-to-air public networks to reach the biggest audiences, and the last women's edition in 2023 earned FIFA less than 10% of the men's 2022 World Cup. FIFA president Gianni Infantino had publicly criticized public broadcasters , especially in Europe, for undervaluing offers to broadcast the 2023 tournament that was played in Australia and New Zealand. That tournament was broadcast by Fox in the U.S. “This agreement sends a strong message about the real value of the FIFA Women’s World Cup and the global women’s game,” Infantino said. The World Cup rights mark another major step in Netflix’s push into live programming. It’s recipe that Netflix has cooked up to help sell more advertising, a top priority for the company since it introduced a low-priced version of its streaming service that includes commercials two years ago. The ad-supported version is now the fastest growing part of Netflix’s service, although most of its 283 million worldwide subscribers till pay for higher-priced options without commercial. But Netflix is still trying to sell more ads to boost its revenue, which is expected to be about $30 billion. Netflix executives have predicted it might take two or three years before its ad sales become a major part of its revenue. Netflix expects to spend about $17 billion on programming this year — a budget that the Los Gatos, California, company once funneled almost entirely into scripted TV series and movies. But Netflix is now allocating a significant chunk of that money to sports and live events, a shift that has made it a formidable competitor to traditional media bidding for the same rights. FIFA will likely use the Netflix deal to drive talks with European broadcasters that likely will be hardball negotiations. Soccer finance expert Kieran Maguire, a co-host of The Price of Football podcast, suggested the deal was “a bit of a gamble" for FIFA and “saber-rattling” by Infantino. “(Netflix) get experience of football broadcasting, FIFA can say, ‘we are now partnering with a blue chip organization, so watch out you nasty Europeans,’” Maguire, an academic at the University of Liverpool, said in a telephone interview. FIFA and Infantino also want to raise the price of broadcast deals to help fund increased prize money and close the gender pay gap on the men’s World Cup. At the men’s 2022 World Cup in Qatar, the 32 team federations shared $440 million in prize money. For the women’s 2023 tournament , FIFA had a $152 million total fund for prize money, contributions to teams’ preparation costs and payments to players’ clubs. In FIFA’s financial accounts for 2023 , the soccer body reported total broadcasting revenue of $244 million. In the year of the men’s 2022 World Cup it was almost $2.9 billion. The next Women's World Cup will be a 32-team, 64-game tournament in 2027, played in Brazil from June 24-July 25. The U.S. originally bid jointly with Mexico. The 2031 host has not been decided, though the U.S. likely will bid for a tournament which FIFA is expected to try to expand to 48 teams. That would match the size of the 104-game format of the men's World Cup that debuts in 2026 in the U.S., Canada and Mexico. Spain won the 2023 Women's World Cup after the U.S. won the two previous titles — in France in 2019 and Canada in 2015. More than 25 million viewers in the U.S. watched the 2015 World Cup final, a 5-2 win over Japan, played in Vancouver, Canada, in a time zone similarly favorable to Brazil. FIFA tried to sign Apple+ to an exclusive global deal to broadcast the inaugural 32-team Club World Cup which is being played in 11 U.S. cities next June and July. Broadcast networks showed little interest in the FIFA club event that will now be broadcast for free on streaming service DAZN, which is building closer business ties to Saudi Arabia. Ahead of the next Women's World Cup, Netflix will "produce exclusive documentary series in the lead-up to both tournaments, spotlighting the world’s top players, their journeys and the global growth of women’s football,” FIFA said. The text of the deal has not been published and Reuters has not seen a draft. Israeli soldiers organise equipment as stand on a tank near the border with Lebanon in northern Israel. Credit: Getty Images US President Joe Biden announced the deal, saying it was designed to be a permanent cessation of hostilities. Israel’s security cabinet has approved it and it will be put to the whole cabinet for review. Lebanon Prime Minister Najib Mikati welcomed the deal, which Hezbollah approved last week. The agreement, negotiated by US mediator Amos Hochstein, is five pages long and includes 13 sections, according to a senior Lebanese political source with direct knowledge of the matter. Hezbollah fighters carry the coffin of a colleague. The Lebanese group is expected to leave its position in southern Lebanon to move north. Credit: AP Here is a summary of its key provisions. Halt to hostilities The halt to hostilities is set to begin at 4am local time (2am GMT) on Wednesday, Biden announced, with both sides expected to cease fire by Wednesday morning. The senior Lebanese source said Israel was expected to “stop carrying out any military operations against Lebanese territory, including against civilian and military targets, and Lebanese state institutions, through land, sea and air.” All armed groups in Lebanon – meaning Hezbollah and its allies – would halt operations against Israel, the source said. An Israeli Air Force F-15 jet fighter manoeuvres over northern Israel. Credit: AP Israeli troops withdraw Two Israeli officials said the Israeli military would withdraw from southern Lebanon within 60 days. Biden said the troops would gradually pull out and civilians on both sides would be able to return home. Lebanon had earlier pushed for Israeli troops to withdraw as quickly as possible within the truce period, Lebanese officials told Reuters. They now expect Israeli troops to withdraw within the first month, the senior Lebanese political source said. A Lebanese official told Reuters the deal included language that preserved both Lebanon’s and Israel’s rights to self-defence. Hezbollah pulls north, Lebanese army deploys Hezbollah fighters will leave their positions in southern Lebanon to move north of the Litani River, which runs about 30 kilometres north of the border with Israel. Their withdrawal will not be public, the senior Lebanese political source said. He said the group’s military facilities “will be dismantled” but it was not immediately clear whether the group would take them apart itself, or whether the fighters would take their weapons with them as they withdrew. The Lebanese army would deploy troops to south of the Litani to have around 5000 soldiers there, including at 33 posts along the border with Israel, a Lebanese security source told Reuters. “The deployment is the first challenge – then how to deal with the locals that want to return home,” given the risks of unexploded ordnance, the source said. More than 1.2 million people have been displaced by Israeli strikes on Lebanon, many of them from south Lebanon. Hezbollah sees the return of the displaced to their homes as a priority, Hezbollah lawmaker Hassan Fadlallah told Reuters. Tens of thousands displaced from northern Israel are also expected to return home. Monitoring mechanism One of the sticking points in the final days leading to the ceasefire’s conclusion was how it would be monitored, Lebanon’s deputy speaker of parliament Elias Bou Saab told Reuters. A pre-existing tripartite mechanism between the United Nations peacekeeping force in southern Lebanon (UNIFIL), the Lebanese army and the Israeli army would be expanded to include the US and France, with the US chairing the group, Bou Saab said. Israel would be expected to flag possible breaches to the monitoring mechanism, and France and the US together would determine whether a violation had taken place, an Israeli official and a Western diplomat told Reuters. A joint statement by Biden and French President Emmanuel Macron said France and the US would work together to ensure the deal is applied fully. Unilateral Israeli strikes Israeli officials have insisted that the Israeli army would continue to strike Hezbollah if it identified threats to its security, including transfers of weapons and military equipment to the group. An Israeli official told Reuters that US envoy Hochstein had given assurances directly to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that Israel could carry out such strikes on Lebanon. Netanyahu said in a televised address after the security cabinet met that Israel would strike Hezbollah if it violated the deal. The official said Israel would use drones to monitor movements on the ground in Lebanon. Lebanese officials say that provision is not in the deal that it agreed, and that it would oppose any violations of its sovereignty. Mensah, a redshirt freshman with three years of eligibility remaining, told ESPN on Wednesday he has transferred to Duke. He attended the Blue Devils men's basketball game against Incarnate Word on Tuesday night. The Blue Devils (9-3) will face Mississippi in the Gator Bowl, but without 2024 starting quarterback Maalik Murphy and backup Grayson Loftis, who also entered the portal. Mensah, viewed as one of the top players in the portal, threw for 2,723 yards and 22 touchdowns and completed 65.9% of his passes. He led the Green Wave to a 9-4 record and the American Athletic Conference championship game, where they lost 35-14 to Army. Tulane will play Florida in the Gasparilla Bowl on Sunday. Van Buren, Mendoza and Locke announced on social media they had entered the portal. Van Buren started eight games as a true freshmen for the Bulldogs. He threw for 1,886 yards on 55% passing with 16 total touchdowns and seven interceptions for the Bulldogs (2-10, 0-8 Southeastern Conference). He took over as the starter when Blake Shapen suffered a season-ending shoulder injury in a 45-28 loss to Florida on Sept. 21. Shapen has said he plans to return next season. Van Buren, a 6-foot-1, 200-pound passer from St. Frances Academy in Maryland, had two 300-yard performances for the Bulldogs, including 306 yards and three touchdown passes in a 41-31 road loss against Georgia. Mendoza threw for 3,004 yards in 2024 with 16 TDs, six interceptions and a 68.7 completion percentage. "For the sake of my football future this is the decision I have reached," he posted. Locke passed for 1,936 yards with 13 touchdowns and 10 interceptions for Wisconsin this season. He said he will have two years of eligibility remaining at his next school. ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Michigan cornerback Will Johnson has joined defensive tackle Mason Graham in the NFL draft. Johnson declared for the draft on Wednesday, one day after Graham decided he would also skip his senior season with the Wolverines. Both preseason All-America players are expected to be first-round picks. Johnson was limited to six games this year due to an injury. He had two interceptions, returning them both for touchdowns to set a school record with three scores off interceptions. Johnson picked off nine passes in three seasons. Graham played in all 12 games this season, finishing with 3 1/2 sacks and seven tackles for losses. He had 18 tackles for losses, including nine sacks, in his three-year career. Tennessee running back Dylan Sampson is The Associated Press offensive player of the year in the Southeastern Conference and South Carolina defensive lineman Kyle Kennard is the top defensive player. Vanderbilt quarterback Diego Pavia was voted the top newcomer on Wednesday while the Gamecocks' Shane Beamer is coach of the year in voting by the panel of 17 media members who cover the league. Sampson led the SEC and set school records by rushing for 1,485 yards and 22 touchdowns. He is tied for third nationally in rushing touchdowns, recording the league's fifth-most in a season. Sampson was chosen on all but two ballots. Mississippi wide receiver Tre Harris and his quarterback, Jaxson Dart, each got a vote. Kennard led the SEC with 11-1/2 sacks and 15-1/2 tackles for loss. He also had 10 quarterback hurries and forced three fumbles. Beamer led the Gamecocks to just their fifth nine-win season, including a school-record four wins over Top 25 opponents. They've won their last six games and ended the regular season with a win over eventual ACC champion Clemson. South Carolina plays Illinois on Dec. 31 in the Citrus Bowl. Pavia helped lead Vandy to its first bowl game since 2018 after transferring from New Mexico State. He passed for 2,133 yards and 17 touchdowns with four interceptions. He ran for another 716 yards and six touchdowns, directing an upset of Alabama. AMES, Iowa — Matt Campbell, who led Iowa State to its first 10-win season and became the program's all-time leader in coaching victories, has agreed to an eight-year contract that would keep him with the Cyclones through 2032. University president Wendy Wintersteen and athletic director Jamie Pollard made the announcement Wednesday, four days after the Cyclones lost to Arizona State in the Big 12 championship game. “Given all the uncertainty currently facing college athletics, it was critical that we moved quickly to solidify the future of our football program,” Pollard said. “Matt is the perfect fit for Iowa State University and I am thrilled he wants to continue to lead our program. Leadership continuity is essential to any organization’s long-term success." The Cyclones won their first seven games for their best start since 1938 and are 10-3 heading into their game against Miami in the Pop Tarts Bowl in Orlando, Florida, on Dec. 28. BRIEFLY FLAG PLANT: Ohio Republican state Rep. Josh Williams said Wednesday on social media he's introducing a bill to make flag planting in sports a felony in the state. His proposal comes after the Nov. 30 fight at the Michigan-Ohio State rivalry football game when the Wolverines beat the Buckeyes 13-10 and then attempted to plant their flag at midfield. MALZAHN: Gus Malzahn, who resigned as UCF’s coach last month to become Mike Norvell’s offensive coordinator at Florida State, said he chose to return to his coaching roots rather than remain a head coach distracted by a myriad of responsibilities. Skier/snowboarder Ester Ledecka has 2 Olympic races on same day in 2026, hoping for schedule changeLA Auto Show offers a look at classics and EV advancements all in one placeTEHRAN – Iran’s Foreign Ministry Spokesman Esmail Baqaei announced on Sunday that a meeting of deputy foreign ministers from Iran, France, Germany, and the United Kingdom is scheduled for Friday, December 9. The discussions will focus on a wide array of bilateral, regional, and international issues, he said. Baqaei emphasized Iran's commitment to fostering interaction and cooperation with other nations, grounded in principles of dignity, wisdom, and expediency. He described the upcoming talks as a continuation of “fruitful” discussions that took place during the recent United Nations General Assembly in New York. "The meeting is part of our ongoing dialogue with these European countries," Baqaei stated. "We aim to address various topics, including pressing regional matters such as Palestine and Lebanon, as well as issues related to our nuclear program." A spokesperson for the UK's Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) also reacted to the news, telling Iranian media that London aims to “reduce tensions” regarding Iran's nuclear issue through various diplomatic channels. The announcement comes as ties between Iran and Europe have been deteriorating in the past years. Tehran has been criticizing the European trio for failing to uphold their commitments under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), a 2015 nuclear deal that has been in shambles for the past seven years after Washington unilaterally withdrew from the deal and reinstated sanctions against Iran. Britain, France, and Germany despite remaining as official signatories to the pact have failed to take the sting out of U.S. sanctions. Europe has even come up with its own sanctions against Iran, with its most recent bans targeting Iranian air and shipping lines. The sanctions have been imposed under the pretext of Iranian weapon supplies to Russia, a claim Iran has repeatedly denied and asked Europe to provide evidence for. Ties between Tehran and Europe took a new hit on Friday when an anti-Iran resolution drafted by E3 was passed by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Board of Governors. The resolution condemns Iran for “insufficient cooperation” with the IAEA under the JCPOA without addressing the West’s complete shunning of the deal. The resumption of talks on Iran's nuclear program—stalled since 2022—is particularly important, as the "snapback" mechanism in UN Security Council Resolution 2231, allowing the re-imposition of UN sanctions against Iran, is nearing expiration. Europe is expected to activate the snapback and reinstate UN sanctions against Iran if dissension over the West’s noncompliance with the deal is not resolved. It is believed that Iran would leave the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) if Europe goes that route. The Iranian public is increasingly demanding the abandonment of the NPT and a reassessment of the nation's nuclear doctrine, fueled by growing skepticism toward the West's commitment to resolving disputes through dialogue and diplomacy.
MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Agriculture (DA) must be a major force in attaining our economic development through nutrition. This was the conclusion that the Alyansa Agrikultura reached after the Dec. 11 hearing conducted jointly by five committees at the House of Representatives. The hearing’s agenda included the critical issue of nutrition. A lead resource person for this was Regis Chapman, head of the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) Philippines. He pointed out that good nutrition is necessary for economic development and that the national school feeding program has a very high return on investment. This is supported by the World Bank when it stated: “For every dollar invested in addressing malnutrition, a return of $23 is expected. The economic benefits of nutrition far outweigh the costs of inaction.” Fortunately, our inaction was partly corrected last year with an P11-billion budget for school feeding last year. This was significantly increased by 50 percent to P16 billion this year. This past nutrition inaction has had disastrous consequences. The WFP website states: “The Philippines is among the countries grappling with extremely high learning poverty. Nine out of 10 children aged 10 years and older are unable to read and understand the age-appropriate text. The national learning poverty rate in the Philippines (9 percent) is much higher than the average for East Asia and the Pacific region (3 percent).” A key to solving this is identified: “Children require optimal nutrition to think, learn, and require skills that will fully develop their potential. The Philippines still faces the burden of malnutrition.” In the feeding program of the ADMU 616569 Foundation, which has so far covered 350,000 schoolchildren, three deficiencies were identified. First, when a feeding program targets only the malnourished, there is a social stigma on these participants, which limits the program’s effectiveness. Second, the national feeding program covered only the first half of 2023, losing the gains achieved then over the second half (thankfully, this was corrected for 2024). Third, the program must not only measure physical accomplishment, such as increases in weight and height, but also academic achievement in grade improvement for subjects such as mathematics, science, and English. However, what has been missing in the discussions is the emphasis on a circular economy. This means a model of production and consumption, which involves sharing, reusing and recycling. The materials are kept within the economy and reused to create further value. For the school feeding program, this means sourcing the food from the community instead of importing and relying on distant sources. The waste from the feeding program can then be used as fertilizer for the farmers. Other opportunities arise when using the circular economy approach. The WFP states that an innovative Home Grown School Feeding “promotes nutrition and learning for schoolchildren while linking with local smallholder farmers to procure food. It creates market opportunities for these farmers.” DA Undersecretary Cheryl Caballero is now taking steps for the DA to be more involved with the Department of Education’s (DepEd) school feeding program. The DA now plans to provide farmers who will provide the food for the program with assistance in production, technology transfer, logistics, marketing and possibly even credit. Subscribe to our daily newsletter By providing an email address. I agree to the Terms of Use and acknowledge that I have read the Privacy Policy . Caballero is now spearheading an effort to build on the current DepEd Gulayan sa Paaralan and LGU Gulayan sa Barangay with a supporting DA Gulayan sa Bayan. This will also use a mass-based household and community approach involving several government and private sector partners to address our severe malnutrition problem. This will link to the school feeding program to achieve our government’s stated objective “to expand the national school feeding program to reach 32 million children and create transformative change for 1.6 million smallholder farmers and families by 2028.” Indonesia plans to spend P266 billion on its school feeding program next year. This is more than 10 times our budget for the same objective. Our poverty learning rate is 91 percent, almost twice worse than Indonesia’s 53 percent. But if we are constrained by a low budget, the DA must work more closely with the DepEd using a circular economy framework to achieve physical and academic achievement, which must be paired with farmer improvement and empowerment.
