Pull the other one, John! Swinney ridiculed for claiming health minister Neil Gray took limo to glitzy premiere because movie 'was about addiction' Click here to visit the Scotland home page for the latest news and sport By TOM GORDON DEPUTY SCOTTISH POLITICAL EDITOR Published: 21:52, 27 November 2024 | Updated: 21:53, 27 November 2024 e-mail View comments John Swinney has been branded ‘desperate’ after claiming under-fire health secretary Neil Gray attended a glitzy film bash because the movie touched upon addiction. The First Minister said Mr Gray needed to be chauffeured in a ministerial car to the opening of the Edinburgh International Film Festival as it was ‘relevant to his portfolio’. The Scottish Tories accused Mr Swinney of ‘clutching at straws’ but the First Minister doubled down in his defence of his beleaguered colleague after the Mail revealed Mr Gray had taken an official limo to and from the gala event. Mr Gray’s wife Karlie also attended the star-studded premiere at the Cameo cinema on August 15. The Scottish Government has insisted Mr Gray was performing ‘ministerial duties’, which justified his use of taxpayer- funded transport. But the premiere was also attended by Culture Secretary Angus Robertson, who met with the film’s star, Saoirse Ronan , and the festival’s director and chair. That has raised questions about why Mr Gray, who is already under-fire over football trips, went as well – other than as a ‘jolly’. Government records state Mr Gray discussed ‘culture’ at a ‘reception’ held at the premiere with film quango Screen Scotland, but the First Minister yesterday claimed he went because of his health brief. Neil Gray was driven in a ministerial car to attend the film bash with his wife Karlie The event to promote movie The Outrun was already being attended by Culture Secretary Angus Robertson who met with the film's star Saoirse Ronan, above Asked by the Mail why Mr Gray needed to attend when Mr Robertson was already at the screening, Mr Swinney said it had been for ‘government business’. Asked what Mr Gray added, the SNP leader replied: ‘Well, he was attending a film which is addressing the issues of drug addiction and alcohol addiction. ‘And mental health and well-being are therefore relevant to his portfolio interests as the Cabinet Secretary for Health.’ The opening night featured the UK premiere of The Outrun, a film based on Amy Liptrot’s memoir about recovering from alcoholism in Orkney, where Mr Gray grew up. Click here to visit the Scotland home page for the latest news and sport Advertisement The Airdrie and Shotts MSP had raved on social media about how much he was looking forward to seeing The Outrun before he took on the health portfolio. While economy secretary last December, he wrote ‘Cannot wait to see this!’ and ‘Cannot wait!’ about the film, two months before he was moved to health after Michael Matheson quit over an expenses scandal. The Scottish Conservatives said Mr Gray was guilty of a ‘pattern of behaviour’ and appeared to have simply been on a ‘jolly’ at the premiere. Deputy leader Rachael Hamilton: ‘This is a desperate defence from John Swinney of his Cabinet colleague. He knows fine well that there was no justification for Neil Gray to be at this event and is clutching at straws. ‘Taxpayers are sick and tired of the SNP taking them for a ride. Honest John should have had the decency to be upfront with the public over Neil Gray’s behaviour, instead of giving this absurd response.’ Mr Gray apologised to parliament earlier this month after using his ministerial limo to attend eight football matches, four of them involving his favourite club, Aberdeen. He admitted that he had given the impression of being ‘more of a fan and less as a minister’ and said he should have ‘attended a wider range of games and not just Aberdeen’. He was also chauffeured to four Scotland international matches at Hampden Park in Glasgow. Half of the eight games were when he held the economy brief. Mr Gray, a father-of-four, took a family member or guest to five of the matches in his official car, but insisted that it had not cost the taxpayer any extra. The government has refused to say if Mr Gray used his car to pick up his wife before they attended the premiere together. A government spokesman said: ‘Ministers attend sporting and cultural events as part of their ministerial duties.’ John Swinney SNP Share or comment on this article: Pull the other one, John! 1 2 3 4 Ludhiana: Six months ago, four activists from Ludhiana called for blocking the polluted water entering villages from the city. They are the ones who have brought the Kale Pani Da Morcha , the protest movement aimed at addressing severe pollution in Buddha Dariya, to this point. These activists, Kapil Arora (civil engineer), Jaskirat Singh (chemical engineer), Kuldeep Khaira (dairy owner and RTI activist), and Dr Amandeep Bains (dentist), took up the initiative when they saw that the AAP government did nothing to solve the Buddha Dariya pollution issue, despite having contested elections on this platform. The activists claimed it deeply troubled them to see CM Bhagwant Mann and Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan remain silent on the issue. These activists were also part of the Mattewara and Zira Factory morchas. Kuldeep Singh Khaira, a resident of Isher Nagar, Gill Road, and an RTI activist since 2006, has been raising numerous issues through his RTI queries. “We have been working on environmental issues for a long time together, and Buddha Dariya has always been at the back of our minds as it is a major issue not only for this city but also for the entire state,” he said. He mentioned that many politicians and bureaucrats talked about clearing the drain as before, but nothing happened on the ground. Khaira further said that what pinched the most was the silence of the present government, which had contested elections on this issue. He said CM Bhagwant Mann should watch his previous videos where he visited the houses of people who lost their loved ones to cancer and other diseases, all because they are forced to drink such polluted water. Kapil Arora, a civil engineer and resident of BRS Nagar, came into the limelight in 2021 when a small portion of the Gill Chowk flyover collapsed. As a member of the Council of Engineers, he pointed out the issues with the flyover and has since been active on various environmental issues. Arora has filed at least 30 cases in the National Green Tribunal, with 17 or 18 cases still active. Regarding this morcha, he said: “Initially, when we gave the government a three-month ultimatum, we believed they would take action during this period. We even extended the deadline from Sep to Dec, but it did not work.” He said that water body pollution is a very serious issue, and now they want to see whether the government will support them or those who are polluting everything. Arora further said that they will conduct a peaceful protest and block the outlets, but if any untoward incident occurs, the government will be responsible. Jaskirat Singh, a chemical engineer and software developer residing in Model Town, has been dedicated to this cause since 2006. He has joined many other groups addressing environmental issues, whether it be the axing of trees, Buddha Dariya, or other violations. He said: “We are not after money, and this is perhaps the major reason we could take up this issue to this point. But the sad part is the silence of the state government. The govt wants activists and industrialists to be at loggerheads with each other.” Asked why they are targeting CETPs first, he said: “Document show that CETPs are discharging their treated water into Buddha Dariya illegally, by going against the agreement. We are not violating anything, but helping implement the PPCB’s orders. After CETPs, we will fight other violations. Dr Amandeep Bains, a dentist residing in Basant Avenue, is quite vocal about various issues in Punjab, whether religious, political, or social. He began his environmental work with the NGO RBS Roots, under which he conducted plantation drives and cleanliness campaigns at the Satluj and Sidhwan canals. Despite having a fractured leg when he joined the Kale Pani Da Morcha, he was active in the events. Bains said: “We can’t let our kids die just for a few industrialists. Clean water is a basic right, and AAP govt has failed. CM Mann was to take a dip in Buddha Dariya after the rejuvenation project was completed, but to date, he has not even bothered to talk to us about this issue.” He said that they will ensure this issue reaches a conclusion. The Marlins announced the deal on Friday. Infielder Vidal Bruján was designated for assignment to make room for Wagaman on the team's 40-man roster. The 27-year-old Wagaman made his big league debut with the Los Angeles Angels in September. He hit .250 with two homers and 10 RBIs in 18 games. He made 17 starts at third base and appeared once in left field. Wagaman also hit .274 with 17 homers and 60 RBIs in 121 games over two minor league stops this year. AP MLB:

Fifteen years had passed since Liverpool last beat Real. A run of eight games, including two crushing final losses. But this felt like the right time for Liverpool to bring an end to the hoodoo. You can also sign up for our sport email, Off the Ball, for all the latest darts, boxing, snooker, F1 stories and more, The team's transition from Klopp to Slot has been seamless, with the Merseyside outfit storming into a handsome lead at the top of the table. Liverpool had also started this week top of the Champions League pile as well, following four straight wins. Real, meanwhile, arrived at Anfield second in La Liga to bitter rivals , and in the bottom half of the Champions League table. Pressure was growing on Carlo Ancelotti, who was still struggling to get the best from superstar signing Kylian Mbappe. While Jude Bellingham was also failing to hit the remarkable heights of his debut season, with just two goals in 13 games in all competitions. And it was Liverpool who almost went ahead inside the opening five minutes. Mo Salah picked the pocket of Mbappe before exchanging passes with Darwin Nunez, who saw his angled shot hacked off the line by Raul Asencio. Luis Diaz then shot wide before Thibaut Courtois produced an instinctive save to deny Nunez from point blank range. Liverpool dominated while Real offered little. And when Mbappe did threaten to break free, the impeccable Conor Bradley was on hand to snuff him out with a crunching tackle. Nunez sent a header inches wide of the far post, before Courtois kept another one out from Diaz as Real continued to ride their luck. Curtis Jones shot over the top before Courtois produced another fine save to keep out Bradley's header. But Real's resistance was broken before the hour mark when Mac Allister ran onto Bradley's pass and swivelled, before sliding a low shot into the bottom corner. Moments later Mac Allister could have doubled the advantage, but curled a shot just wide. Then came the low point of a miserable night for Mbappe, when Caoimhin Kelleher saved his penalty. With 20 minutes remaining Salah had the chance to bury Real, but came out in sympathy for Mbappe instead by missing a penalty of his own. But it didn't matter. The Spanish giants had been reduced to a shambles. And Gakpo piled on the pain for Ancelotti's men 14 minutes from time with a powerful header that gave Courtois no chance. History has shown you can never write-off Real. But there was no coming back this time, against a team under Slot that will take some stopping in the coming months.

It's based on a large language model that means it can process your sentences and respond almost as if it was another human. The app launched on November 30, 2022 and saw a rapid rise in popularity. Part of the app's appeal is how natural it feels to speak to ChatGPT. "These models were trained on vast amounts of data from the internet written by humans, including conversations, so the responses it provides may sound human-like," OpenAI explained. "It is important to keep in mind that this is a direct result of the system's design (i.e. maximising the similarity between outputs and the dataset the models were trained on). And the content you provide to the chatbot can also be used to train OpenAI's models. However, you can opt out of this by going into ChatGPT settings if you have an account. It was even revealed that the groundbreaking artificially intelligent chatbot will soon be smarter than any human on Earth "in a few thousand days", according to its creator. In a personal blog post titled " The Intelligence Age ", OpenAI CEO Sam Altman wrote: "It is possible that we will have superintelligence in a few thousand days (!); it may take longer, but I’m confident we’ll get there.
